Re: Best ap for notifying when I'm at my bus stop?

2016-07-25 Thread Brett

Hi,

I haven't read all the replies to this thread, so someone else may have already
mensioned this app.

I would use MoveIt for this purpose, if it works in your area. Select the bus
route, then just start live directions to the stop you are after.

Hope this helps,
Brett.

Cheers Brett.

RE: What is with Audible?

2016-07-25 Thread Jerry White
I agree! This used to be so simple! Now, I usually end up using the JAWS
cursor to download the books. If you read the entire screen, it will say
something like "Download". I had to use the jaws cursor to hover the pointer
over this and hope the menu opened up under it, press the down arrow, and hit
enter. Very hard to download now! I did notice that it was easier in internet
explorer than it was in mozilla firefox, though - if that helps any.

E-mail me offline if you need to talk further or more in depth.

sorry not too helpful at this point, going off of memory.

Apple Maps can provide you with street names if you enAbel tracking.
BlindSquare can also provide you with street names as well as other points of
interest, but it cost $29.99. Sendero seeing Eye GPS is also another option,
but I personally prefer BlindSquare.

RE: What is with Audible?

2016-07-25 Thread Bryan Schulz
Hi,

Yes it sucks and the company is aware of the problem.
You have to let a tech guy with audible take over your computer remotely to get
anything downloaded until it is fixed.

Re: Apple TV comparison

2016-07-25 Thread Wayne Merritt
One reason why you might want a 4th gen Apple TV and an App Store, is
YouTbue. I can watch videos that I have liked from YOuTube on my phone
or my Apple TV 4th gen. Other plusses include: Siri, dictation with
Siri in text fields, and many other kinds of apps. Word is with the
next TVOS that will be out in a couple of months, the Apple TV is
going to receive some cool updates, like a single sign-in for all of
your accounts, an updated Remote app in your iOS device, and more.
Also, being able to airplay things from my phone to my TV is pretty
cool and gives much better sound than I could ever get on my phone.

Re: Best ap for notifying when I'm at my bus stop?

I come up against this fairly regularly in Dublin. are use blind Square and

when I'm approaching my bus stop I get sometimes and I know I have reached it.
fantastic for this purpose. Worth every penny alone for this purpose.

Apple Maps can provide you with street names if you enAbel tracking.
BlindSquare can also provide you with street names as well as other points of
interest, but it cost $29.99. Sendero seeing Eye GPS is also another option,
but I personally prefer BlindSquare.

Re: Best ap for notifying when I'm at my bus stop?

2016-07-25 Thread Andy Baracco
In Blind Square you can mark the stop as a favorite and it will be announced,
and you can even track your progress towards it. In my experience, it might be
better to mark the previous stop, as you might not get the announcement until
you are actually there, and won’t have time to pull the cord, press the button,
etc.

Re: powerbank/external battery sugestions/questions

2016-07-25 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hello,

I just got one of these, and it works well. If you have a 30-pin to lightning
adapter, you can use the built-in 30-pin connector fine with the latest
iPhones. The talking function is really neat. And for travel, it would allow me
to charge my phone and Apple watch and another device off one outlet, which is
pretty cool.

Best,
Anna

Apple TV comparison

2016-07-25 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everybody,

I have some questions regarding AppleTV, then I hope some of you can answer for
me.
I have a third generation model, and I would like to eventually upgrade.
However, I would like to know what some of the advantages are to upgrading?
Also, are there any disadvantages to upgrading?
I know the fourth generation has different features, including the app store.

What is the point of having the app store?
What sorts of apps can you put on the new Apple TV?
Are they all television based? What is the price range for the fourth
generation?
Does it have other features, or connections, besides the app store?

I want to make sure this is going to be worth purchasing. It will take me some
time. But maybe the price will be lower, when I am ready.

Thank you for any help, or thoughts you can offer. I really appreciate it.

Everyone have a great day!

Terri

What is with Audible?

2016-07-25 Thread Rose Combs
I seem not to be able to down load two books from Audible in my Library,
nothing seems to be working, and I have tried to select my iPhone but no
response. This used to work. There has to be a way!

Re: Questions regarding the IPod

2016-07-25 Thread Chris Chaffin

It is hard to say, but I have had some apps come out with updates that I could
not get since I was not running the most recent version of ios.
So after ios 10 comes out, the apps you are using might still support ios 9 at
first, but after a while they will probably drop that support.

You could always run the version you had currently on your iPod, but there is
no guarantee that you will always be able to update to the most recent version
of the app, especially since the iPod 5 will not be supported by ios 10.
So if having the most recent version of the app is important to you, then you
should maybe wait, continue to save until you could get an iPod 6.

Re: Questions regarding the IPod

2016-07-25 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone who has contacted me, regarding my iPod touch questions.

I really appreciate it. I know I should probably buy the latest iPod. But the
money just isn't there right now. Plus I don't need it to do everything.
I also realize that I could put stuff on my phone, and listen to it that way.
But I honestly don't have a lot of space left on my phone. It is a 16 gig model
and I think it have about five gigs of space left. I know I could put it on
disturb also.
However, I don't really want to do that, because I get some important texts and
calls during the day. So I wouldn't want to miss those, because the
Phone was on do not disturb. So this is why I have decided to go with this
generation iPod.

Long as I am able to do what I want with it, and that is fine with me. Now here
is my question. If my application such as, Spotify, tuna in, 50 radio Pro, and
maybe a couple others I can't think of at the moment, I have updates, when I
likely still be able to get these updates? That is my biggest concern! I would
really appreciated if anyone could answer that for me. I don't mind if I cannot
upgrade past nine. I don't see why that would matter to me, unless it got to a
point where I could not do my update for my application. Then that would
definitely be a problem. Thank you for all the help so far. It really does mean
a lot to me. Sorry this message is a little sloppy. I am using dictation. I
have never learned how to correct my mistakes, when using dictation.

Have a great day!

Descriptive video on Netflix

2016-07-25 Thread Rose Combs
I am a new user to Netflix. I thought I understood how to set of DVS but
only thing I have gotten is Marco Polo, not sure I really want to watch the
whole series. How can I using an I-device restrict selections to DVS shows
and movies? On the computer there was a whole category but on the iPad
there did not seem to have that option and I am not sure what I should put
in the search box to make this work!

Thank you!

powerbank/external battery sugestions/questions

2016-07-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The Peak 6000 or whatever it is called is still available. I think I have seen
it on the AT Guys website. It is a 6,000 MAH external battery which has a
button and when you press said button it will tell you that the battery is
full, above 50%, below 50% or needs recharging. It is pretty big for the
capacity (Anker makes batteries with 3 or 4 times that capacity now that are
about the same size), but if a talking function is important to you then it is
as far as I know the only game in town. It is also expensive compared to
Anker's offerings. I bought it years ago when I still had my 4S because it has
an integrated 30-Pin charge cable and while the talking function is nice, I
would certainly not buy it again when it stops holding a charge.

It has 1 USB port and it will start charging as soon as you plug it in. If your
iPhone is fully charged it will, however, say it is on AC Power so I think the
battery keeps topping it up.
If you plug the battry into a power outlet (it has an integrated, flip-out
plug) it will announce that it is charging and it will say "Charging complete,
powering off" or something like that when it is fully charged.
The one I have I bought when I still had my iPhone 4S and as far as I know this
never got updated, but it has an integrated/attached short 30-Pin connector
which of course isn't of much use unless you still have a 4S. It also has an
integrated USB Micro port which is useful if you need to charge a Bluetooth
headset or speaker. If you plug in a USB cable to the USB port it will say
"Charging USB device".

Subject: powerbank/external battery sugestions/questions

Hello all,
I have seen here many treads about external batteries and after reading this, I
have still some questions if a combination of some features is available.

The battery should have one or more of the following features:
1- 1/2 usb-ports to charge e.g. a iphone6.
2- a way to read the battery-level of the power bank as blind person:
(or the power bank can speak or there is perhaps a app on the iPhone that can
read-out the energy-level of the power bank on the iPhone);

3- the power bank should stop charging if the device is full: this seems to be
possible;
4- the power bank should not be turned on/off with a button but should
start/stop automatically when a usb-cable is plugged in/out: this is also
possible in the global power bank-market.

Finding a powerbank with all available options is nearly impossible I think.
I ask this question here Since I want to know which power banks exists with the
property described in number 2.
But of course , all other suggestions are also very welcome.

Kind regards,
William Windels

Questions regarding the IPod

2016-07-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Terri,

As Christopher already said, the only iPod that can run iOS 10 will be the
sixth generation, the fifth generation stops at iOS 9. Probably not a big
concern for now if all you want to do is run Spotify, listen to Audio books and
so on.
Personally I think it's a waste of money, if you don't want notifications while
you listen to a book or music just bring up SIRI and say "Turn on Do Not
Disturb".
As far as getting stuff onto the iPod Touch it is identical to an iPhone. Yes,
you can use Dropbox or any number of other cloud services to access stuff
inside their apps, but if you want the music app then iTunes is the only way
and if you avoid iTunes with your iPhone then you will also avoid it with the
iPod Touch.
I started out with an iPod Touch in 2009 and then got the iPhone 4 in 2010. A
month or two after I got the iPhone I sold my iPod Touch because it was just
sitting in the drawer. The same happened when I bought my 6S. I kept my 5S at
the time and thought maybe I use it at home for Audible and stuff like that,
but I just never did because I prefer to use one device instead of two which
essentially do the same thing.

Sieghard

Bluetooth over the ear Bluetooth over the ear headset

I am looking for a couple pair of Bluetooth over the ear headsets for a couple
of friends, and I can't find them under $50 on amazon. Either over the ear, or
bone conduction. One of my friends is hard of hearing so the earbud type won't
work for them. Any help would be appreciated.

It's the similar pass through gesture that you have to do sometimes with

perfectly for me, I didn't need any cited help getting past the videos.

Apple Maps can provide you with street names if you enAbel tracking.
BlindSquare can also provide you with street names as well as other points of
interest, but it cost $29.99. Sendero seeing Eye GPS is also another option,
but I personally prefer BlindSquare.

RE: Budgeting Apps

2016-07-25 Thread Tom Rash
I don't think so. I got mine a long time ago and I'm not sure if it exists
in the app store any more. Here's some more info on the one I have.
Connor Wakamo's Software
Home Balance Blog
Balance icon
Available on the App Store
Balance
Screenshot of transactions list Screenshot of accounts list
Twitter Email Follow Us on Twitter Email Us for Support
Balance is an app for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad designed to help you keep
track of the balances of all of your accounts. Intended to replace a
paper-based checkbook register, Balance maintains a list of credits and
debits to each of your accounts. When you enter a new transaction, Balance
automatically recalculates that account's balance. You can enter recurring
transactions into Balance, and new occurrences will be entered into Balance
automatically. Password protection is available to keep others from looking
at your transactions. Balance also allows you to export your transactions to
your computer. With Balance, you'll always know how much money you have in
each of your accounts so you can avoid overdraft fees.
Balance Pro is now available as an upgrade to Balance via In App Purchase.
Balance Pro adds support for multiple accounts and recurring transactions.
To upgrade to Balance Pro, tap on the gear icon in the lower-right corner of
the screen to bring up the settings screen and then choose "Upgrade to
Balance Pro." The upgrade takes place from inside the app and once complete
the additional features will be unlocked; there's no additional app to
download.
What's New in Version 2.1.2
Quick Clear
Tap-and-hold on a transaction and a new menu pops up. From there, you can
mark a transaction as cleared or not. (This feature requires iOS 3.2 or
later, although Balance still supports iOS 3.1.3.)
Duplicate Transactions
The ability to duplicate transactions has been added. A sheet pops up with
all of the information of the original transaction pre-entered, although
duplicates are given today's date rather than the original's date. You can
also duplicate transactions from the Quick Clear menu.
Other Fixes and Changes
. An issue with occurrences of recurring transactions not being added to the
total balance has been fixed.
. An issue with restore from backup with recurring transactions has been
fixed.
. An issue with restoring from an email backup has been fixed.
. The version number on the About screen now updates properly for new
versions.
What's New in Version 2.1
Recurring transactions (Pro only)
Balance 2.1 adds support for recurring transactions. You can now schedule
transactions to occur according to complex rules and the transactions will
be automatically created when necessary. This feature is available as a part
of the Balance Pro upgrade, which can be purchased at any time from within
Balance's settings screen via In App Purchase. If you've previously
purchased Balance Pro, this feature is added free of charge when you upgrade
to Balance 2.1.
Improved Backup and Smart Restore
Smart Restore is a new feature in Balance 2.1 that greatly improves the
restore from backup process. When restoring from backup, Balance will do its
best to merge information stored on your device with the information stored
in the backup file. This means that Smart Restore can be used to manually
keep data in sync across multiple devices. Additionally, on iOS 3.2 or
higher, you can now restore directly from a backup file stored in your email
account without having to restore via a Web browser.
Improved currency handling
Balance now allows you to set the currency for your accounts independently
of your device's Region Format. Additionally, if you are using Balance Pro,
each account that you've set up can have a different currency.
Cleared balance and deposit/withdrawal totals
On the transactions list screen in Balance, you can now tap on the balance
in the bottom toolbar to display the cleared balance of your account or to
display the total of deposits or withdrawals.
Streamlined interface
In order to streamline the interface, the + button has been moved to the
bottom-left corner of the screen in all places and the actions menu (with
options to export, restore, etc.) has been moved to the settings screen.
Other notable changes and fixes
. Balance now supports fast app switching on iOS 4 and the high resolution
Retina display.
. Accessibility via VoiceOver is now fully supported in Balance.
. A new button to edit account information has been added to the accounts
list screen in Balance Pro.
. Balance can now be used in landscape orientation.
. Scrolling performance has been improved, especially on the transactions
list screen.
. The support email address and Web site have been updated to the latest
information.
. An option to restore the upgrade to Balance Pro free of charge for
previous owners has been added.

Hello Richard,

Thank you so much for your advice. I really appreciate it. I would wait and
save up money to get the six generation model, but it is hard for me to save
up money. So that is why I am taking what I can get. Maybe there is not the
greatest idea. But I know if I wait for a while, the prices for the sixth
generation will hopefully go down. So by then, maybe I will be able to
afford one. But for now, I don't really want to wait on that.

In all honestly, I don't put anything on my iPhone right now. It's only a 16
gig model, so it cannot hold much. I do read some stuff through to noon, and
I listen to stuff through Spotify. That was supposed to be tuning in. Also,
I do have voice reader on my phone, as well as dropbox. But I use dropbox
more. I do plan to put all these programs on my iPod, once I get it.
But the books, and the movies I would be putting onto the iPod, are
currently on my hard drive. So maybe I could put them into dropbox and look
at them that way on the iPhone? I don't know. I would do anything not to
have to use iTunes. Right now for my phone I have it sync on Wi-Fi. Maybe
that is not the best idea? But I will admit, I do not know how to take
things off my phone, or really put them on there. I've never done it. Thank
you again for your help. If you have any more advice, or suggestions, I
would really appreciate that.

Have a good night!

You do not have to enable mail on the touch.
I would strongly recommend, however, that you consider saving up for the
iPod Touch 6th generation.
I don't know how much longer Apple will support the 5th generation and as
one who has owned both, the 6 is worth it.
For your mp3 books, are you using Voice Dream Reader or just treating them
as books through iTunes?

Audio described movies will show up in the video app if you are
transferring them with iTunes. Or, are these just mp3 files from Blind
Mice or somewhere? If just mp3 files, again, Voice Dream Reader would
handle them fine and you can get them on your device through DropBox
rather than going through the pains of iTunes.

I too have an iPhone and an iPod for similar reasons. I wanted to have a
device dedicated to listening to music and reading books. I find I do
other things with it, but those are the main two things.

Enjoy,
Richard

Hello everybody,

I am considering purchasing an IPod Touch, 5th generation. I do not want
the latest one, because I feel I just can't afford it. But also, I don't
think I need all those features.

So here are some questions I have.

Do I have to activate male on the IPod. I receive my mail on my phone, and
I really do not want it in both places.

Also, I have a lot of audio described movies, is there a way to add these
to the IPod?

If so, how would I do this? Would they go in to a certain folder?

Also, I have a lot of audiobooks in MP3 format.
Would they have to go in to a certain folder as well?
I guess my main question is, can any MP3 file be put on the IPod?

Once I add something, is it easy to remove?

Also, how do I keep photos off the IPod?
Again, I want these to stay on my phone.

My reason for wanting to purchase an IPod, is so I can listen to stuff
without interruptions.. For instance, I have a Spotify account. I want to
put the app on my IPod, and listen to the music from my Bluetooth speaker.
Right now, when I listen with my phone, even

While reviewing information for an app I am interested in purchasing, I

there is a VoiceOver equivalent of the following commands:
Single tap to call contact.
Double tap to text (SMS).

For us VoiceOver users, single taps and double taps do not perform the

Really interested in feedback. :)

Double tap and hold with one finger until you hear the triple tone

the pass-through gesture and swipe swipe through the videos. Once
you get past that, you're fine.

Hey guys,

OK, is anyone having any issues with the latest update with the my
verizon app? When i load it, it wants you to agree to the terms.
I can get past that alright, but then there is this stupid video
thing, and it's completely unaccessible after that point it wants
to show you this video, and i can get no further. Any ideas?

Re: Budgeting Apps

2016-07-25 Thread Brett
Hi, Just one more to throw in to the mix, I use Home Budget by Anishu.
This app is quite powerful and lets you sync with more than one device,
so several family members can contribute to the budget.

There is a lite version so you can try it before deciding weather you
want to purchase it. this app is still receiving updates fairly regularly.

Cheers,

Brett.

I use a real simple one called Balance. Unfortunately, I can't find it in the
app store any more.
