It is hard to say, but I have had some apps come out with updates that I could not get since I was not running the most recent version of ios. So after ios 10 comes out, the apps you are using might still support ios 9 at first, but after a while they will probably drop that support.
You could always run the version you had currently on your iPod, but there is no guarantee that you will always be able to update to the most recent version of the app, especially since the iPod 5 will not be supported by ios 10. So if having the most recent version of the app is important to you, then you should maybe wait, continue to save until you could get an iPod 6.
