Re: Can no longer effectively search in native Twitter app

2017-06-20 Thread Kathy Brandt
I type, for example, YouTube help (with a space between the words) and double
tap search in the bottom right-hand corner. @TeamYouTube is the third entry in
search results. When I double tap on it, nothing happens. I should be able to
get the tweets better under that, and be able to compose a tweet to them. If I
don't double tap search in the bottom right-hand corner, there are completely
different results under my search term YouTube help, which do not include at
team YouTube. If I double tap on any of those results, it works. I have
uninstalled and reinstalled native Twitter app, did not fix the problem.

Re: a good app for journaling

2017-06-20 Thread Jennie Facer
If you have more than one device that you want to keep all of your journaling
on, you may want to consider day one. You can type it on your phone and you can
seee it on your iPad or iPod touch. I like MacJournal and it has its place in
my phone, but if I want my iPad to see it too so I can add or delete there, I
use Day One. Hope this helps.

Hello Kathy,

I just performed several searches via the native Twitter app and all appears to
work as expected.

So, perhaps you could provide a step-by-step description of exactly what you
are doing so that we can attempt to reproduce your issue. Be certain to
include the search term/terms you use, also.

updates downgrade the experience for native Twitter app.

Re: Youtube version 12.23 and apparent absence of collapse video button VoiceOver iOS 10.3.2

Running IOS 10.3.2 on an iPhone 6, I have found that if I hit the home button

there. Occasionally, I have to do this twice to get it to appear. I have been
experimenting with this only since reading the original post this afternoon, so

RE: Best practices for making a Word docx file accessible for iPhone reading?

2017-06-20 Thread Rob
One thing you might consider is using the free Microsoft Word app to read and
edit the document. I have not used the app very much. But you should be able
to navigate by headings with the app.

Subject: Best practices for making a Word docx file accessible for iPhone
reading?

Hi List,

I need some quick guidance before I embark on a project to make a constantly
edited Word docx file accessible and navigable.

I'm on my Homeowners Association board and we are in process of editing our
covenants and bylaws into a single electronic document. In order for me to be
most effective and contribute at our discussion meetings, I need to make the
Word docx file we're using as navigable as possible so I can follow along on my
iPhone and read the sections being discussed. As the document is pretty much a
legal document without any images, I'm thinking the main thing I can do is to
place headings at appropriate places to distinguish document articles which are
the main sections from lower level sections in order to maintain hierarchy. So,
I'm planning to get the most recent version of the working docx file and insert
Heading1, Heading2, Heading3, etc. styles as appropriate. Before doing this, I
wanted to ask this list if what I'm proposing is the best way to make the
document navigable. Also, will I need to save the Word docx file containing the
headings in any special format in order to be able to swipe to those headings
quickly on my iPhone when participating in a meeting? I believe I've had mixed
results in the past when trying to open Word docs containing headings in the
Word app and I seem to recall that saving in filtered html worked better for
purposes of accessing it on the iPhone. This access primarily consists of
opening the document in Dropbox where it is housed and navigating to the rotor
headings item and then single finger swiping to access those various headings.

I apologize for the technical nature of my question but I really don't want to
spend a lot of time doing this if I don't get the results I'm seeking. And
since the document is going to be shared and edited by at least one other user,
I want to make sure I follow steps that can be carried forward.

Thanks for any suggestions and feel free to write me privately at
wale...@gmail.com if you think the list would not be interested in your
responses.

in the queue to get those particular tweets and interact with them. I tried
writing to Twitter support, and constantly got the message back saying "I don't
know what you mean", so, they are useless. This is really dismaying, that their
updates downgrade the experience for native Twitter app.

Re: Youtube version 12.23 and apparent absence of collapse video button VoiceOver iOS 10.3.2

2017-06-20 Thread Wayne Merritt
I noticed that issue as well recently. I don't have a solution other
than what you mentioned. I would also suggest those affected use the
Feedback item recently described on list to send feedback to the
YouTube developers. Since they release updates extremely often,
hopefully a fix will be coming soon. It is a huge pain to have to
close and reopen the app to go to the next video.

This blind Apple engineer is transforming the tech world at only 22

2017-06-20 Thread Richard Turner
FYI: the link to the original article is at the end.

This blind Apple engineer is transforming the tech world at only 22
   KATIE DUPERE / Jul 10, 2016
Apple engineer Jordyn Castor has never been one for limitations.
She was born 15 weeks early, weighing just under two pounds. Her
grandfather could hold her in the palm of his hand, and could even slide his
wedding ring along her arm and over her shoulder. Doctors said she had a slim
chance of survival.
It was Castor's first brush with limited expectations -- and
also the first time she shattered them.
Castor, now 22, has been blind since birth, a result of her
early delivery. But throughout childhood, her parents encouraged her to defy
expectations of people with disabilities, motivating her to be adventurous,
hands-on and insatiably curious.
It was that spirit that led to her interact with technology,
whether it was the desktop computer her family bought when she was in second
grade, or the classroom computer teachers encouraged her to use in school.
"I could help make technology more accessible for blind users."
She says the adults in her life would often hand her a gadget,
telling her to figure it out and show them how to use it. And she would.
"I realized then I could code on the computer to have it fulfill
the tasks I wanted it to," says Castor, whose current work focuses on enhancing
features like VoiceOver for blind Apple users. "I came to realize that with my
knowledge of computers and technology, I could help change the world for people
with disabilities.
"I could help make technology more accessible for blind users."
Bringing a personal perspective to Apple innovation
There's an often overlooked component of "diversity" in
workplace initiatives -- the need to include the perspectives of people with
disabilities.
Keeping tabs on the needs of the blind and low-vision community
is a key component of Apple's innovation in accessibility. Castor is proof of
how much that can strengthen a company.
She was a college student at Michigan State University when she
was first introduced to Apple at a Minneapolis job fair in 2015. Castor went to
the gathering of employers, already knowing the tech giant would be there --
and she was nervous.
"You aren't going to know unless you try," she thought. "You
aren't going to know unless you talk to them ... so go."
Castor told Apple reps how amazed she was by the iPad she
received as a gift for her 17th birthday just a few years earlier. It raised
her passion for tech to another level -- mainly due to the iPad's immediate
accessibility.
"Everything just worked and was accessible just right out of the
box," Castor tells Mashable. "That was something I had never experienced
before."
"I'm directly impacting the lives of the blind community."
Sarah Herrlinger, senior manager for global accessibility policy
and initiatives at Apple, says a notable part of the company's steps toward
accessibility is its dedication to making inclusivity features standard, not
specialized. This allows those features to be dually accessible -- both for
getting the tech to more users, as well as keeping down costs.
"[These features] show up on your device, regardless of if you are someone who
needs them," Herrlinger tells Mashable. "By being built-in, they are also free.
Historically, for the blind and visually impaired community, there are
additional things you have to buy or things that you have to do to be able to
use technology."
At that job fair in 2015, Castor's passion for accessibility and
Apple was evident. She was soon hired as an intern focusing on VoiceOver
accessibility.
As her internship came to a close, Castor's skills as an
engineer and advocate for tech accessibility were too commanding to let go. She
was hired full-time as an engineer on the accessibility design and quality team
-- a group of people Castor describes as "passionate" and "dedicated."
"I'm directly impacting the lives of the blind community," she
says of her work. "It's incredible."
Innovation with blind users in mind
Increased accessibility for all users is one of Apple's driving
values, under the mantra "inclusion inspires innovation."
Herrlinger says the company loves what it makes, and wants what
it makes to be available to everyone. She describes the need to continuously
innovate with accessibility in mind as part of Apple's DNA.
"Accessibility is something that is never-ending," Herrlinger
says. "It isn't something where you just do it once, check that box and then
move on to do other things."
   And it's a dedication that

Youtube version 12.23 and apparent absence of collapse video button VoiceOver iOS 10.3.2

2017-06-20 Thread Shai
Hello all,
Yesterday, I saw that there was an update to the YouTube app which I
applied thinking that it might fix the issue I am having with the app
crashing when I open a playlist with VoiceOver. It still has not fixed
this issue and it seems that the collapse video button is also not
present. This button enabled a person to exit out of an existing video
and watch other videos on their recommended tab or to search for a
different video altogether via the app's search button. With the
collapse video button eliminated, one can only pause and resume a
video, or watch videos related to the current one.
Does anyone have a workaround for collapsing a video? For now, I have
been closing the app in the switcher after the conclusion of a video
and re-opening it.
Thank you in advance for any responses

Best practices for making a Word docx file accessible for iPhone reading?

2017-06-20 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi List,

I need some quick guidance before I embark on a project to make a constantly
edited Word docx file accessible and navigable.

I'm on my Homeowners Association board and we are in process of editing our
covenants and bylaws into a single electronic document. In order for me to
be most effective and contribute at our discussion meetings, I need to make
the Word docx file we're using as navigable as possible so I can follow
along on my iPhone and read the sections being discussed. As the document is
pretty much a legal document without any images, I'm thinking the main thing
I can do is to place headings at appropriate places to distinguish document
articles which are the main sections from lower level sections in order to
maintain hierarchy. So, I'm planning to get the most recent version of the
working docx file and insert Heading1, Heading2, Heading3, etc. styles as
appropriate. Before doing this, I wanted to ask this list if what I'm
proposing is the best way to make the document navigable. Also, will I need
to save the Word docx file containing the headings in any special format in
order to be able to swipe to those headings quickly on my iPhone when
participating in a meeting? I believe I've had mixed results in the past
when trying to open Word docs containing headings in the Word app and I seem
to recall that saving in filtered html worked better for purposes of
accessing it on the iPhone. This access primarily consists of opening the
document in Dropbox where it is housed and navigating to the rotor headings
item and then single finger swiping to access those various headings.

I apologize for the technical nature of my question but I really don't want
to spend a lot of time doing this if I don't get the results I'm seeking.
And since the document is going to be shared and edited by at least one
other user, I want to make sure I follow steps that can be carried forward.

Thanks for any suggestions and feel free to write me privately at
wale...@gmail.com if you think the list would not be interested in your
responses.

This will allow you to save to dropbox. It is not an app, but, I put it on my
home screen, and it works like a charm. If anyone needs any help in using it,

This is a biggie folks, as far is apps go. I love it because one it will run in
the background, with voiceover off even, 2, it tells me what's nearby. The only
thing I don't like is that the interface is a light red color that would be
better darker for more contrast. Also, when you tell people about the app and
you share the app details, it gives the description in Spanish. I'm guessing

It was never possible to transfer music back from an iOS device to the computer
via iTunes. If songs were purchased from iTunes it’s a non-issue since you can
easily download these songs in iTunes or on other iOS device. If you turn on
automatic downloads this happens automatically the next time you open iTunes.

Thanks, Sieghard. I suspect you're right. Seems I recollect stories of folks
who had an iDevice containing all their music and they wanted to put it on a
computer due to some mishap with a failed drive, etc. and they couldn't do it
without buying special software. That fits with my experience with purchased

Hi Alan,

I don't think music you purchase on your iPhone syncs to the computer, you
would have to turn on automatic downloads for music on your computer so that
whatever you buy on other devices connected to your Apple Id also downloads on
your computer.
I don't use playlists a lot so can't help you there, but maybe a call to Apple
Accessibility may give you the best amount of information regarding how this
all works.

I'm a bit confused by my results following syncing my iPhone 7 with iTunes
after my last two song purchases from the iTunes Store on my phone. I purchased
the two songs on my iPhone, went into the music app, and added them to my main
playlist that I have set up to sync in iTunes. I would think that any songs
I've added either on my computer or on my iPhone and have added to a synced
playlist should remain in sync between the two. However, following a sync, the
purchased songs are no longer in the playlist on my iPhone to which I added
them. Its' as if the initial sync following their purchase didn't transfer them
to the playlist on my computer and subsequent syncs then removed them from the
playlist on my iPhone.

Is it not possible for songs purchased directly on your iPhone and placed in a
synced playlist to be transferred to that playlist on your computer following a
sync? What about calendar events that I add directly to my iPhone? Will they be
synced to my computer since I have contacts and calendars set to sync in iTunes?

I'm having a hard time understanding why I got the results I did with purchased
songs and would welcome any explanations.

If free apps are being considered, take a look at one that was mentioned
recently called Lazarillo. It is free and like BlindSquare, can be used with
maps from Apple and Google to get directions. You can also request Uber rides
from within Lazarillo. I looked at it last week, but I don't know if favorites
are as easy to mark as in other GPS apps already mentioned. I know you can add
favorites, but for instance, in BlindSquare there is a button toward the top of
the screen which says Add Place. In Lazarillo, it looks like you have to go to
the favorites screen, but I could be wrong. Anyway, it's free so there's
nothing to lose.

That sounds doable. I've always had very good cardinal direction.
I've downloaded the app yesterday and hope to take it out for a test drive
today.
But since I'm being driven up to Tampa this morning; hopefully to get on
their kidney transplant list, I'll be testing it in the vehicular driving mode.
So we'll see how it goes.

Thanks, Sieghard. I suspect you're right. Seems I recollect stories of folks
who had an iDevice containing all their music and they wanted to put it on a
computer due to some mishap with a failed drive, etc. and they couldn't do it
without buying special software. That fits with my experience with purchased
songs on the iPhone.

Accessibility may give you the best amount of information regarding how this
all works.

Subject: Isn't iTunes Music Sync Bi-Directional?
