Skype and FaceTime have the same problem on iPod touch sixth generation

2017-12-17 Thread Kathy Brandt
When I place a call, since updating to 11.2, I can’t get to the buttons using
voice over unless, as in FaceTime, I use earphones. Unlike in FaceTime video,
where I don’t have to use earphones, the Skype problem persists even when doing
a video call. On my iPhone 5s everything works as expected.

Choosing handwriting mode wont read printed text, it doesn't make any
sence specially when we are reading some kind of forms where few
entries have been filled in handwriting. For example, , whether
written name is persons name or his father's name, is not clear .

RE: Problem with Alarm App since IOS11 Update

2017-12-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Dani,

I had this app a long time ago, but while it has a bit more flexibility with
recurring reminders and all that I found I don't need it any more. Anyhow, I
just redownloaded it to check it out and you are correct, the picker items
don't seem to change if you flick up or down, but you can double tap and hold,
then drag and change them.
After I figured this out I deleted the app again, then I thought of something
else so I redownloaded it again and realized my assumption was correct.
The problem is simply that when you touch any of the picker items (date, hour,
minutes and AM/PM the action rotor has focus. Turn the rotor to the left and
you will here "Adjust Value", now flick and it works as it should.
It does seem that the action rotor easily gains focus and you may have to turn
the rotor left to Adjust Velue a few times, but this definitely will let you
flick to adjust.

Regards,
Sieghard

My bad. The app has an "ed" at the end of it ... should've been
written: Alarmed.

I found a feedback form through Google, so am hoping for a reply.

I tried adding a new timer with my Braille display, and wasn't successful.

I also went to the Calendar app which uses the same type of picker, and was
able to use the picker option there to add a new event.

Gonna borrow D.H.'s eyes later to see what I could be doing wrong.

More Later,
Dani

Perhaps you are thinking of the Orbit Reader. It is basically a 20 cell
Braille display with some basic note taking capability.

I read probably on this list about a new notetaker coming in January for
$399 that would communicate with a phone via blue tooth? Can someone
please tell me what it is and where to find it?

Thanks

RE: Quite upset with the app Sero

2017-12-17 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
This link takes you to a site that describes charges for much more than just
the Sero app, from which you can subscribe for just $5.99 month, if I remember
correctly. The higher charges listed at this site are for additional services
you may or may not want. Keith

Re: Problem with Alarm App since IOS11 Update

2017-12-17 Thread Dani Pagador
My bad. The app has an "ed" at the end of it ... should've been
written: Alarmed.

I found a feedback form through Google, so am hoping for a reply.

I tried adding a new timer with my Braille display, and wasn't successful.

I also went to the Calendar app which uses the same type of picker,
and was able to use the picker option there to add a new event.

Gonna borrow D.H.'s eyes later to see what I could be doing wrong.

More Later,
Dani

Re: Problem with Alarm App since IOS11 Update

2017-12-17 Thread Dani Pagador
The Alarm app is made by Yoctoville. I use it to be able to set
multiple timers--laundry, crock pot, oven, housewifely multitasking
stuff.

I rebootted the phone and still have the same issue. Will go see if
there is contact info. I see from looking at the support page that
this shouldn't be an issue, but my phone can be goofy, just to keep
its mommy on her toes.

More Later,
Dani, also forgetful today because of caffeine deprevation

RE: hand writing recognition with seeing AI

2017-12-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Andy,

Quite a few people have reported very good results, why propose it’s not
working before you try it?
I’m sure it depends a great deal on the person’s handwriting, but apparently if
the handwriting is relatively normal it does a great job. One thing that is
mentioned when you switch to that channel for the first time is that the
writing has to be right side up, I assume those who get no results at all might
have it upside down or sideways, but there aren’t that many possibilities so
one just has to keep rotating the paper if it doesn’t work at first.

Sieghard

I shouldn't speak about this without trying it, but with all of the variables
involved in handwriting, I can't imagine being able to trust this capability.
It seems like a kind of parlar game, but i hope that I'm wrong.

I attempted to read a Christmas card and couldn’t get it to read for me. I
used the scan stand so that I could make sure I put the camera and document

RE: Problem with Alarm App since IOS11 Update

2017-12-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Sorry, forgot, but why not tell SIRI to set your alarm? I know this should work
if you do it manually and I'm sure maybe after a reboot it will, but I rarely
ever open the Clock app for that purpose since setting an alarm is something
SIRI happens to do extremely well.
You can ask SIRI "What alarms do I have" and she will read them out.
If there is one you want, e.g. maybe you have a 6 AM and a 7 AM then say "Turn
on my 7 AM alarm".
You can also say "Change my 6 AM alarm to 6:30 AM"
You can say "Delete my 6 AM alarm" or you can say "Delete all alarms".

Sieghard

RE: Problem with Alarm App since IOS11 Update

2017-12-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I have no issues with this, works as always. Have you rebooted your phone since
the update? If not or even if you did, just close all apps and turn the phone
off, wait 30 seconds and turn it back on, then try again.
This is certainly not a bug I have heard or read about at any point since iOS
11 came out in September.

Subject: Problem with Alarm App since IOS11 Update

Hi, Everyone.
I updated to IOS11.2 last weekend. I am having trouble now setting up a new
alarm in the Alarm app. I cannot set the time for the alarm--I can go to the
various picker items, but cannot do the finger swipe up/down to set the hours,
minutes, and seconds.

Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you resolve it?

Thanks,
Dani

My recommendation for a Twitter client for iOS and macOS

2017-12-17 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hi M Taylor and all
I am hearing reports that you are having trouble activating links using the
latest official client from Twitter on your iOS device. Well I have a personal
recommendation. Try the paid app Twitterrific which seems to be very popular
amongst not only the blind community but also the sighted from what I am
reading on Twitter using that exact client. The reason I put "macOS" in the
subject is Twitterrific as of recently is also available on that platform and
is just as accessible as the iOS counterpart.
Happy tweeting!

RE: iphone, audio description, movies

2017-12-17 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
I've run into those things, too. What I do now, is I call the theatre before I
go, ask if the movie is audio described, because not all movies are, and tell
them I'm coming and will they make sure it's working for me. When I get there,
I ask to talk to the manager on duty, introduce myself as the person who
called, and confirm that it is working. Usually, they tell me that Yes it is,
because I've checked it myself. Of course, this is no guarantee that it will
work, but if you also asked for the headsets to have new batteries before you
start, I bet they'd agree. It may still peter out, but then it's time to get a
refund and be annoyed. Kind of a hassle, and I don't go to the theatres much
any more, but when I have and done these things, it's worked out pretty well.

This is an example of something that works better in theory than in practice. I
live in an area that supposedly has several theatres that are equipped with the
audio description technology, but in practice the equipment is not well
maintained and the theatre employees, who are often teen agers, are either not
trained on the use of the equipment, or simply forget about it because there
are so few requests for it. in my experience, more often than not, the system
may not be turned on for the film you want to view, or the headsets may have
dead batteries, or some other issue, or they may give you the headset for
amplification rather than the one for description. This often requires multiple
trips back to the customer service desk after the movie has started. There is
often nothing that can be done once the movie has started, so you end up
without description. If the theatre management is on its game, they may offer
you a refund or a pass for future use, but that doesn't compensate you for the
time and expense it may have taken to get to and from the theatre, only to end
up with an undesirable experience. There have been multiple legal settlements
between AMC Theatres and organizations of the blind, but in large part, these
issues still exist.

I had that happen once, too. When I contacted their 800 support number buried
somewhere in the app, it turns out I had 2 usernames, or something like that.
This, from a previous trial I had forgotten about. After that was fixed, it’s
worked pretty well for me, as far as described content goes, which is about all
I use it for.

I am quite upset with the app Sero. I say this, because I actually started
paying the six dollars or 599 that they charge for a monthly subscription last
month. I went in there today to see if there were any new movies that I wanted
to watch, and was told my free trial was over. I find this extremely
interesting, when in fact I am paying a monthly subscription. Really weird is
it not?

2017-12-17 Thread Matthew Bullis
I canceled after I opened the app one day and it didn't log in. It promptly
deleted all the content I had downloaded, and I had no record of what I had
downloaded. Also I know they put up material that's on Netflix, which is a
violation. I declared myself done, even though they do have some things which
are not available elsewhere.

The trick is to keep the phone level, with the camera pointing toward the
middle of the page, about 18 inches above the page.
One method that might help you for practice is to take a standard 8.5 inch
wide and 11 inch long sheet document and fold it in half the long way, then
unfold it and fold it in half the short way, then unfold it and flatten it on
the table.
Now, the folds will create an intersection in the middle of the page.
Find that spot where the two folds meet in the center, and place the phone's
camera right on it.
Then, launch Seeing AI and use both hands to lift the phone straight up
slowly, keeping it level.
If you are sitting in a chair with the document on the table, the phone will
be about even with your face when it is at the right height. This of course may
vary some depending how tall you are, but at some point, you will hear "Hold
Steady" and stop moving at that point and it will take the picture.
It shouldn't take more than about 6 to 10 seconds to raise the phone to the
right height.
Once you get used to the height, etc, you won't need to use that method any
more.

much.

 Hi Sandy,
What I've found is that you have to hold the phone higher from the
document than with other OCR apps. It is about 18 inches for me. And
you have to hold steady when it says to hold steady and it will
 automatically take the picture.
And, yes, the handwriting recognition is amazing!

Try Fopydo, scanning stand. it can be raised to 14 inches, which could help.
And it is the least expensed.

The trick is to keep the phone level, with the camera pointing toward the
middle of the page, about 18 inches above the page.
One method that might help you for practice is to take a standard 8.5 inch wide
and 11 inch long sheet document and fold it in half the long way, then unfold
it and fold it in half the short way, then unfold it and flatten it on the
table.
Now, the folds will create an intersection in the middle of the page.
Find that spot where the two folds meet in the center, and place the phone's
camera right on it.
Then, launch Seeing AI and use both hands to lift the phone straight up slowly,
keeping it level.
If you are sitting in a chair with the document on the table, the phone will be
about even with your face when it is at the right height. This of course may
vary some depending how tall you are, but at some point, you will hear "Hold
Steady" and stop moving at that point and it will take the picture.
It shouldn't take more than about 6 to 10 seconds to raise the phone to the
right height.
Once you get used to the height, etc, you won't need to use that method any
more.

Richard

confirm that your flashlight is not on, but I would also consider
having your battery replaced. It sounds like the battery could be
faulty. I had my battery replaced a few months back as I found the

Simon,
I'd suggest you check out the Quick Help in the document channel.
It tells you what to do.
That channel is designed so you don't have to worry about manually taking the
picture.

Hi Sandy,
What I've found is that you have to hold the phone higher from the document

And, yes, the handwriting recognition is amazing!

Yesterday evening I had a strange situation where my battery

believe it may’ve been attributed to the Uber app. I believe this
only because it’s the only thing I could logically explain. My
phone has never done this. A while later I managed to get the phone
to restart. My battery said it was at 50%. I launched Uber to try
to get a ride and the phone died on me again. Has anyone else seen
this behavior before? It was rather peculiar and not at all timely
as it left me stranded for a good while before I could get things
operational. Thanks for any ideas. I’m on an iPhone 6S using the latest
 firmware.

Re: Battery Plunge

2017-12-17 Thread 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone
Kim,
I have been experiencing similar battery behaviour on my iPhone six. I am now
running 11.2.one I think it is and will see if this has improved the problem.
