RE: Missing contacts

2020-04-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I wonder if it matters where you save them. I use Outlook.com for my personal
account and Exchange via Office 365 for my business account and my contacts
sync to my phone from these services. I have over 300 for each my personal and
business accounts and I have never had problems with contacts disappearing.

Hi, Jim,

I also have difficulty with contacts disappearing. Someone told me that you're
only supposed to put 100 contacts in your phone, while others have told me that
they have a lot more than 100. I always hit the Save or Done button after I
add new contacts. My iPhone is a 7+ and I don't know if the model has anything
to do with this, or if it is just some kind of fluke in the phone.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

RE: Missing contacts

2020-04-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I never have only numbers show in the Messages app as long as the contact is in
my contacts. What I have seen is that if I get a message from somebody who is
not in my contacts and I add them from the messages app that it still shows the
number after I added them. So far rebooting the phone has fixed this for me
every time.

Yes, messages seem to sometimes decide to just show numbers.
I have no idea why.
Most of the time, I get names; but only Apple knows why it doesn’t show the
name sometimes.

As for entering them and then they are not there, I’m with Diane, maybe you
missed the done button?
I’ve never entered a contact and had it go missing in the 10 plus years I’ve
used Apple devices.

I am not sure Siri knows the nick names from the contacts without you telling
it once.
I do know that Siri has no idea that there is a company field in the contacts.
So, don’t ever put a name in the company field and expect Siri to call it.
I use the last name field for that.

It's what shows up when you activate the share button.
Like when you are on a web site and you double tap the share button at the

Voice Dream Scanner, $5.99 for the iPhone version.
The only limitation, which the developer is working on, is that columns do not
scan well.
But, you will not find a better OCR app.
It is fast, accurate, and you can save as accessible PDF, so the visual
appearance is there, but the text is also accessible.
And if you also have Voice Dream Reader, it makes extracting text from an image
PDF really slick, but even without being a Voice Dream Reader user, Scanner
will show up in the share sheet, so it can be used to extract text from an
image PDF.
For quick and dirty scans without saving, Seeing AI is good.
O, and Voice Dream Scanner can save multiple pages into one document.

I certainly will, Richard. I just wanted to exhaust some resources before
doing that and see if any of you had experienced anything similar.

issue didn't know what you were doing.

Just trying to help trouble shoot.

My last question is have any of you experiencing this talked with Apple?

Thanks.

Right. I looked at all of that, but they were there before, including the
nicnnames, which Siri had once programmed.

Anyway, thanks much for your help, as always.

RE: Missing contacts

2020-04-25 Thread portillo.jim
Oh yes. As I said, some were there for a while and then suddenly weren’t. So,
they were always saved.

Just today, I was deleting old phone calls from my Recent calls area, and I
found two calls from relatives that I’d recently added. They were certainly
there last week, and now, they weren’t, and the phone numbers were the only
things showing.

Weird stuff.

I re-added some, but we’ll see what happens.

Re: Missing contacts

2020-04-25 Thread Denver A Jones, DD
I currently have nearly 1200 contact in my phone. Many of which I talk to on a
regular basis. I have experienced this problem in the past with my iPhone.
However, it is quickly resolved. What I have done, is to go into groups and
hide all contacts and then show all contacts and the problem resolves it self.
At least that is how it works for me.

My last question is have any of you experiencing this talked with Apple?

Thanks.

2020-04-25 Thread Diane Giannetti
When I sent my message and saying perhaps you forgot to hit done, I certainly
was not implying that one does not know how to use an iPhone. So if Kimberly,
hope you didn’t take it that way as that was not my intentions. I was just
throwing out an idea that possibly could happen.

One more thing about transferring to a new phone

2020-04-25 Thread Richard Turner
I noticed today that none of the apps that I had been testing through
TestFlight showed up on my phone.
Easy to redownload through TestFlight.
Just wanted folks to be aware.

RE: Missing contacts

2020-04-25 Thread Richard Turner
I have around 400 contacts and have had nearly 900 when a stupid Outlook issue
on my computer added everyone I ever emailed to contacts. That apparently is a
feature of Outlook to some. Once I got that feature/pain turned off and
cleaned up the contacts, it has worked fine.

I’d highly recommend talking with Apple and having them run a diagnostic.
If you are hitting done and they disappear, something is truly not right.

2020-04-25 Thread Richard Turner

RE: V iPhone and Mac Visionaries List Members: Let's Talk Via Zoom, on Sunday, April 26, 2020

2020-04-25 Thread Alan Lemly
I agree with Duane that having the Zoom meeting ID more than 15 minutes before
the meeting starts encourages a greater attendance. It is also much easier to
schedule attendance with all the necessary info so that email doesn't have to
be checked constantly just before the meeting starts.

Greetings,

I hope you won t mind this simple suggestion from a list member who has used
Zoom for a long time. If you have already scheduled the meeting, it would be
good for list members to see the invitation a couple of times in advance of the
actual meeting. For example, I ll be on a Zoom meeting tonight with alumni
from the school I attended. The invitation went out last night, and will be
reposted today. Only seeing the invitation a short time before any event
doesn t give some adequate time to prepare to attend. Just a thought.

I was in Email when I tested it and I’m running iOS 13.4.1, so that may be the
difference.
Of course, there seems to always be some app outliers that don’t widen when
landscaped.
Not sure why that is.

Mike,
I just unlocked orientation on my old SE, and the keyboard widen in landscape
just like all iPhones.
I usually keep the orientation locked, but after testing, I think you had
misinformation.
I should be able to confirm on the new SE after it arrives tomorrow.

I was told by apple, and if you look on amazon, for a case for the iPhone SE

V iPhone and Mac Visionaries List Members: Let's Talk Via Zoom, on Sunday, April 26, 2020

2020-04-25 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

So, it is my plan to host a Zoom meeting for all of the members of the V
iPhone and Mac Visionaries communities tomorrow, Sunday April 26.

As promised, I am posting this notification early so those who wish to
attend may do so.

It is my plan to start the meeting at 2p, California local time. As I say,
it is my plan but, things can change so if the meeting gets cancelled or has
to be postponed, I will post an update notice here.

My thoughts are that we will take Apple-related questions from members but I
always welcome blindness-related accessibility questions / comments, as
well.

I will send the meeting invitation, with login instructions, to the group
approximately 15 minutes before the meeting is to begin.

Until Then,

Mark

RE: Setting up new iPhone SE 2020

It would be interesting to hear what you could find out with sound compare ng
the SE and the 11.

Well, I have my work iPhone 8 plus, and the new iPhone SE side by side.
I played the same song on each and went back and forth. Actually with three
songs.
Away in the Manger and joy to the world by Judy Collins and If I Only Had A
Brain by Natalie Merchant.
The difference, if there really is one, is minor.
To my ears, the SE may have a little more open sound, but that might be just
that it has a smaller body. The 8 plus is about 3/4 of an inch longer and
about a half inch wider.
Sound is so subjective, that it is difficult to describe.
I had my wife listen and her description was that the SE sounds wider while
the 8 plus is a little closed or compressed.
They both have stereo speakers...

I suspect an XR or an 11 might sound better than either of these but I have not
had much experience other than hearing VoiceOver on a client's phone.
I will be getting a new work iPhone 11 in a couple of weeks.
If you would like, I could do a similar comparison between the SE and the 11.

Its sad that you cannot sample them in a quiet room at the Apple store.

Hi richard,
I don’t know how many iPhones you have heard over the years, but I wonder if
you would be able to comment on the sound of your new phone as against the
sound of things like say an iPhone 8. Or an iPhone X.

I think sprint is crap. I'd never use them. I really like Verizon.
They have wonderful disability support. Whenever I've called them, they've
always been very helpful. That was a very rude thing to say to you.

Well, normally I would have thought the battery would run out very
quickly for the first couple of days.
Last night, after getting through the bulk of the set up, I
unplugged it at 100% and hit the power button to lock it.

That was about 9:30.
I woke up too early, but at 4:30 AM, it was still at 100%.
I've used it on and off for the last 3 and a half hours, comparing
the sound, checking Email; trying to problem solve an issue with
Voice Dream Reader, resetting network settings as part of that, and
right now it is showing 84%.
I'll keep tabs on it for a couple days, but my first impression is
that the battery life will be very good.

iPhone SE 2020 and battery

2020-04-25 Thread Richard Turner
Since Gordan asked about battery life with the new phone I thought I'd start a
separate thread.

Well, normally I would have thought the battery would run out very quickly for
the first couple of days.
Last night, after getting through the bulk of the set up, I unplugged it at
100% and hit the power button to lock it.
That was about 9:30.
I woke up too early, but at 4:30 AM, it was still at 100%.
I've used it on and off for the last 3 and a half hours, comparing the sound,
checking Email; trying to problem solve an issue with Voice Dream Reader,
resetting network settings as part of that, and right now it is showing 84%.
I'll keep tabs on it for a couple days, but my first impression is that the
battery life will be very good.

RE: Warning to sprint customers: your old sim may not work in your new phone

2020-04-25 Thread Richard Turner
Thanks for this.
Since I have Xfinity internet, they don’t charge for minutes just a very
reasonable charge for data; which I use very little of, which is why I went
with them for mobile phone coverage. I think they sublet the Verizon service.
The eSIM, is so that if you were going to travel abroad and your carrier
supported it, you could get an eSIM card, which as I understand it you scan
with the camera and get it set up as your primary number, then throw the card
away.
When you are in another country, or out of your main carrier’s coverage area,
you can buy a SIM card from a local carrier, and use that secondary number
while in that area.

Subject: Warning to sprint customers: your old sim may not work in your new
phone

Hi,

I got my new SE yesterday and I set it up this morning. Everything went fine
until I put the old sim in the new phone and got no service with a message that
said the sim had locked.

I reached out to Sprint and after two hours in an online chat, I found out my
old sim is not compatible with my new phone. They are sending me a new sim and
waving the shipping charge which I appreciate, but what a pain!

And here’s my other question. The new SE has a digital sim, but apparently the
phone can‘t be activated without a physical sim. So what is the point of that
digital sim?

Oh, and this was sort of snarky. At the end of this marathon chat session, the
sprint guy said, well if you had bought your phone from us this wouldn’t have
happened.

Gr!

Anyway I just wanted to warn any other unsuspecting sprint customers that you
better get a new sim with your new phone and save yourself some aggravation.

Re: Warning to sprint customers: your old sim may not work in your new phone

2020-04-25 Thread Kimberly
Yeah, it was a pretty crappy thing to say. But sprint’s cheapness makes it a
bit easier to swallow.

I’ve been with verizon and t-mobile and sprint has just good coverage but is
around 100 dollars cheaper than verizon, so I will live with a little rudeness.
Lol!

RE: Setting up new iPhone SE 2020

2020-04-25 Thread Richard Turner

At this point, I'd say call Apple Accessibility.
You'll get better answers more quickly.
I'm assuming the same, but I had used both iCloud and computer backups; and so
I'll defer to the experts.

I’ve never used iCloud to back up my phone’s. I use iTunes. So if I were to do
this transfer from Phone to Phone I assume I need to have my iCloud back up
drive on as well as have backed up the phone with iCloud as well. I mean I can
do that that’s not a problem. Deidre

Hello,
The positionning for the transfert is:
new iPhone under and the old one above with the camera facing the new one.
The camera should point a little lower than the center of the new one and the
distance between both should be about 6 inch.
Hope it helps!

My understanding is that doing the phone to phone, the new phone inherits the
settings, including the sign in.
But, this is the first time iV: done this.

2020-04-25 Thread Richard Turner
Well, I cannot help with the positioning of the phone for the image they offer,
but the manual method worked fine, and that button is just beyond where the
position the phone instructions are and I got to it by just flicking right.
The phones just need to be near each other.
The message popped up when they were probably a foot apart.
Yes, I had set up the wifi, which I assume is necessary, though bluetooth being
on is likely the most important.
The Logitech k480 is a full sized keyboard minus the number pad. There are a
lot of VoiceOver keyboard commands, but they work great.
I have a document that covers them and a document with the keyboard commands
and the gestures in tables to help with connecting which keyboard commands
equal the gestures.
They are on my website. www.turner42.com

2020-04-25 Thread Deidre Muccio
I have one more thing that might be a problem unless I make a change. My phone
has also arrived. I have a different Apple sign in on the new phone because my
old email and my whole sign in well the old sign in on my old phone works just
fine except that I can’t access that email any longer so I used a different
email address in a different password. Will I need the two signings and emails
to match before I do anything? Is that a question for Apple Accessibility? I
asked that question of them recently and they said no it wouldn’t make any
difference, but given the way Richard set up his phone, it Richard that might
make a big difference.

Re: Setting up new iPhone SE 2020

2020-04-25 Thread Deidre Muccio
Richard Well that sounds cool. I might try that too. And I don’t have anywhere
near 200 apps on my phone. Can you say more about how I would position the two
phones near one another that would work well? The one thing that stood out in
what you wrote here that is different from what I was told by someone at Apple
Accessibility, is that they said I needed to do the set up with the Sim card in
the new phone. You did it all without the Sim card in the phone which is what I
assumed I would be able to do if I wanted. you must’ve had to plug in your
Wi-Fi info to activate the phone correct?
Can I assume that the Logitech keyboard you referring to is a full-size
keyboard? How different on the commands one needs to learn to use that with an
iPhone andvoice dream writer? I’m ready to get rid of my old computer.

Re: OCR PDFS on Mac or iphone

2020-04-25 Thread Richard Turner

I won't bore you with all the details of today's saga, but after I turned

I was able to continue the setup.
When I got to the option to set it up by placing the old phone near it, I
decided to try that.

I couldn't get the image focused, but there was a manual option.
Picking that, gave me a 6 digit number to enter and I was off and running.
Now, I have too many apps, well, less than 200; but still a lot of apps.
I have over 12000 songs.

Well, this method took less than an hour.
Some apps were still downloading after it was complete wiht the transfer,
but i was able to go ahead and deal with other settings.
I paired it with my Logitech K480 keyboard which is what I am typing this
on.

I put in the old SIM card and can call, and receive calls, etc.
All my Email accounts were there with all the messages.
Text messages are there.
So, this is pretty slick.
The phone sounds a lot better than the previous model.
That's all for now.

Slide to type does not kick in unless you hold your finger on the screen in

What happens, with that new slide to type keyboard, when setting up a new
phone from scratch?

I usually set up a new phone, from an iCloud back-up. Which means i will
have to put in my apple ID.

Will a new phone use the slide to type, from the start, or will it only kick
in, after the phone is up and running, as it could prove difficult, because
you can't turn it off, until you can access the settings.

Gera,

I did not have a good experience when using the NFC phone to phone setup
when upgrading from an iPhone 7 to an iPhone 8. I got some sort of confusing
response from the new phone that my Apple ID did not match. Since I had only
ever had one Apple ID, I decided at that point to restore from my encrypted
iTunes backup which worked fine after the delay to re-download all the apps
from the cloud. I believe when I get my SE 2020, I'll just restore from a
backup and proceed without the phone to phone transfer.

Exactly what I m wondering too. When I did this method of phone to phone
transfer from a 5S to my currently-running SE, it asked me nevertheless if I
wanted either an Icloud or an ITunes backup. Shouldn t it have transferred
everything from one to another phone (even my music from ITunes) without
having me asked it for which backup I wanted to restore from? What s the
essence then, in usin the phone to phone method?

As far as I know, your instructions Alan are correct.
A couple points though, I would never use something with a sharp point to
remove the tray. Just in case. Call me paranoid, but if you slip and push
too hard, you could do damage. A standard small paper clip end works great
if the sim removal tool is not in the box.
Yes, triple tapping the home button when you power it on will start
VoiceOver.
The one risk in setting up from a backup is that if there are any
lingering problems, they will be inherited.
I'm debating whether to set it up as a new device, then sync with my
computer.
The advantage to using an encrypted backup is that more settings like
passwords are supposed to be included along with email account details.
I may even just call Apple Accessibility and have them help walk me
through it.
Though I'm just stubborn enough to go ahead on my own.
But, I would set it up via wifi first, then put in the sim I think.
I'll be calling my carrier to double check.

My understanding is that when you power on your new iPhone, you should be
able to press the home button three times to activate Voiceover. But see
below for other steps you need to do before this.

I would strongly recommend that you backup your iPhone 8 before doing
anything else with your new iPhone. Whether it's better to do this over
