Re: Is it possible to read subtitles on IOS?

2021-07-28 Thread Richard Turner
Yes. And the setting is in a stupid place in my opinion.
Go to settings, accessibility, VoiceOver, Verbosity, Media Description.
The explanation says: Determines how Closed Captions + SDH are output during
media playback.

When you double tap on it, you have I think none; braille, speech, and speech
and braille.

I would also recommend turning off Touch to Wake, under Accessibility, then
Touch, in the Physical and Motor section of Accessibility.
Similar to Richard's suggestion of turning off the Raise to Wake function,
Touch to Wake will turn on the phone each time it is touched, or tapped. Not
good when the phone is in a pocket.

RE: Getting new iphone 12's

2021-07-28 Thread Carolyn
Dana, I am totally blind. The guy at Wal-Mart, where I bought my 11 tried to
set up facial ID on my phone. So, I went home, and on a bright and sunny
afternoon, I went to the west side of our apartment and got it done. The phone
walks you through it. It is a good thing to do on a bright day.

RE: Getting new iphone 12's

2021-07-28 Thread Richard Turner
When I had an iPhone 11 at work, I found Face ID was a great help.

The trick for some blind users is knowing how to do the head movement when
setting it up since you have to imagine you are looking at the center of a
clock face, then turn your head/eyes up slightly to 12 and then slowly but not
too slowly, rotate to 3, 6, 9 and back to 12. You have to do that a couple of
times but the VoiceOver feedback is excellent.

Pay attention to the settings.
You do not want Requires Attention on, because you have to be able to look at
it pretty much at the same angle you were when setting it up. Not terribly
useful.
And right now, since I don't have a phone to refresh my memory on, there is
another one in that category where just glancing at the phone will unlock it.

You, of course, will have a passcode as well for times when Face ID isn't
working.

I always recommend turning off Raise To Wake under Settings, Display and
Brightness. It eats battery because every movement of the phone wakes it up.

Getting new iphone 12's

2021-07-28 Thread danamarieleet
We are getting two new i-phone 12's tomorrow.

We are transitioning from SE 2020's thus this will be our first time to have
a phone with face ID.

Both my husband and I are totally blind and have eye movement, thus
wondering is it advisable to set up face ID.

Also we are pretty familiar of how to navigate without the home button, but
would be game for any suggestions anyone would give on what we need to do
differently on setting up our new phones.

Re: How to reset phone

2021-07-28 Thread Mike B.
Hi Kay,

Go to Settings / General / Reset button and single finger double tab to
open.

Swipe to find several options, the first being, Reset all settings, and the
second being, Erase all content and settings.

I've never done this before so, I would assume the second option is what you
want, but I would ask Apple Accessibility to be on the safe side. Swipe
through the other options just to see what's there just for the hell of it.

Stay safe & take care. Mike.
Just once, I want a username and password prompt to say: "Close Enough!"

We have a phone that was set up by someone else. What we want to know is
how to reset the phone back to factory defaults. It used to be easy but I'm
not seeing an obvious answer in IOS 14. We'd like to set it up from the

Instapot APP ALIVE AND WELL!!!

2021-07-28 Thread doug parisian
Yes, it's true, I just got an update for the instapot APP on my Iphone 8
using the latest IO release 14.7.  Guess the instapot gang may have
taken quite a beating over their unfortunate error of their ways. I
doubt whether an angry bunch of blind apple folks alone tipped the
balance. Maybe someone could check out the instapot social media links
to see if they took a serious beating for their mistake. It would put a
song in my heart to hear how David slew Goliath!

Re: KeePass Touch app issue

2021-07-28 Thread Alan Lemly
Robin,

That is very good news. The developer needs to rewrite the help instructions
because things have obviously changed with respect to accessing your Keepass
database file stored in the cloud. Previously, I think only Dropbox was
supported but I think Microsoft One Drive might also be supported now.

Glad you puzzled it out and connected again to your database.

Alan,

I finally found how to add DropBox. Not sure I could articulate how, but I
found a place under the add button where I had to enable DropBox as an option,
then navigate to it to find the file. Obviously, the Help file is way out of
date. I was not prompted for synching options, but found a place in the Gear
icon where I could turn on auto-synching. I’ll have to add a password on my
laptop and see if it does sync to my phone.

Glad to be up and running again.

I no longer see the sync button either on the bottomline toolbar. But I'm also

you'll hopefully be able to reconnect to your master database on Dropbox.

Hi,

Question for others using the KeePass Touch app. I’m on version 1.11.8 on and
iphone SE 2020 running latest IOS.

I sync my password vault to my laptop with DropBox. I’ve had this set up for
almost a year. I recently opened my KeePass Touch app and it showed that my
master file had not been updated on my phone since around May. I did not know
how to update it, so I deleted the file, thinking I would just have KeePass go
out to DropBox and open the file, just as I’d done in the past. Strangely, now
I cannot find how to do this to save my life. The help file says to click on
the Sync button and even says it is the second from the left, which is what I
thought I’d done in t the past , but I cannot find the Sync button. The app
screen says to tap the add button to open a file, but, when I do that, it’s
showing me iCloud and I cannot find any way to navigate to DropBox. I’m
stumped. Any one out there do this recently and know what I could be missing?

Sieghard and others, I don't know why I particularly like the home button. I
guess I'm just old-fashioned, though I probably could get used to not having
it. For the present, my phone's working fine since I unplugged the earbuds from
the lightning port. I can't wait to get my new hearing aid that will connect
directly with the ph0o. Perhaps that will work better in the long run. Thanks
for all the advice concerning the sluggish behavior of my iPhone 8.

RE: an iTunes purchase

You have to contact Apple's iTunes Store support through the confirmation email

Subject: an iTunes purchase

Hello Listers,

The other night I went to purchase an item on iTunes that wasn't too expensive.
I accidentally purchased it in HD instead of SD. Can I repurchase it in the
lower quality version because streaming HD programming is difficult sometimes
on my internet. If I could exchange the product, I would because it's the same
price. Any ideas?

RE: iPhone 8 sluggish after phone calls in iOS 14

2021-07-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I noticed that often in the past and typically if you rebooted your iPhone
after an update with a wired headset connected you would experience this. You
could fix it simply by unplugging the headset and then plugging it in again.
I have not experienced this for a while now and I don’t know if it is because I
have an iPhone 11 now or if this was fixed in iOS 14, but I just updated to iOS
14.7.1 last night with my Earpods plugged in and all was perfectly fine after
the phone rebooted.

Anyways, it does not seem that is the issue which was described and it also
seems that a reboot of the phone seems to have fixed it.

there is a long standing issue with phones becoming sluggish if wired earphones
are used either when the phone boots up/reboots, and while on a phone call. I
think that mostly impacted some older phones; I'm not sure.
Turning VoiceOver off and back on again, usually clears that one up.

RE: iPhone 8 sluggish after phone calls in iOS 14

2021-07-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
When you say you like the home button I am curious whether you ever tried a
phone without the home button and if you did, was it just for a few minutes or
did you have a chance to really "use" it for maybe a day or two?
I find that I don't miss the home button at all and that is the same thing I
hear from others who now have a phone without and let's face it, even the
iPhone SE 2020 with the guts which for the most part are those of an iPhone 11
will be already two years old when the iPhone 13 is released and eventually
it's pretty safe to say you have to get an iPhone without home button so why
not get an iPhone 13 this fall and get used to it. That is at least my 2 cents
worth on that topic. To me that is a little bit like people who have Windows 10
but install these shells which make it look like Windows 7 which in my opinion
is a real step back.

RE: offloaded unused apps to improve storage but wondering where they went

2021-07-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
According to what I read the icon stays on your home screen and is greyed out
and if you tap it the app redownloads:

If you’re unsure about whether or not you’ll use an app again in the future, no
worries; the apps aren’t actually deleted permanently from your phone. All your
data and documents will remain on your device—and the apps themselves just turn
into grayed-out icons on your home screen—making it easy to re-download and
jump back in whenever you want to. Also, if you don’t want your phone to
automatically delete certain apps (even if you don’t use them a lot), you can
set the offload function for certain ones.

If you decide you want to use an app that’s been offloaded, just tap the
grayed-out icon and it will re-download, with all your info still there
(assuming the app is still available in the app store).

Hi again, Richard,

I tried your suggestion with no results. What happens is that the TV video I'm
listening to plays on the locked screen for about two minutes. Tapping the home
screen does nothing at all, and unlocking the screen doesn't even show that the
video's been playing until I completely unlock the phone. On the new phone, it
plays just fine, but on my iPhone 6, I just have to play it without locking the
screen at all, which is too bad, because I think that really does conserve
battery life.

Re: iPhone 8 sluggish after phone calls in iOS 14

2021-07-28 Thread Richard Turner
there is a long standing issue with phones becoming sluggish if wired earphones
are used either when the phone boots up/reboots, and while on a phone call. I
think that mostly impacted some older phones; I'm not sure.
Turning VoiceOver off and back on again, usually clears that one up.

Now one more strange thing. I had plugged external earPod's, the ones that used
to come with the phone back in the good old days. I answered a call, and the
same thing happened at call's end. The phone became sluggish as it had earlier.
But when I removed the pods from the lightning port the phone worked fine. It's
working fine now or I wouldn't be answering this e-Mail. I reckon it's time for
a new phone.

Hello again, Listers,

After hesitating a long, long time, I finally upgraded my iPhone 8 to the
latest iOS 14. Since last Friday night when I took the plunge, each day brings
some new issue. Today’s issue is this: If I'm checking e-mail or reading and my
phone rings, I answer and when the call ends, my phone suddenly becomes very
slow in responding to gestures on the screen and to keyboard commands using my
BrailleEdge. So far, my only recourse is shutting everything down. Makes me

RE: iPhone 8 sluggish after phone calls in iOS 14

2021-07-28 Thread Richard Turner
Dwayne,
Making that phone an iPod like device probably makes sense.

There have been technically 5 phone models since the 8. The 10, the 10s or
whatever they called it, the 11, the SE 2020, and the 12.
If you love the home button, consider waiting to see what they do with the
iPhone 13 this fall, and if it doesn't have a touch sensitive place on the
screen to simulate the home button; consider the SE 2020. It has the same guts
as the 11, and is my current phone of choice.
I'm considering, actually planning, on the 13 unless there is some strong
reason against it.

The SE 2020 is the same size as your 8.

HTH,

Richard

Thanks again, Richard for your wisdom. I've shut down the phone and that helps.
But the next time, I'll try the reboot instead. If all else fails, I'll try
resetting my network settings. All this makes me frightened of my next upgrade,
and, since my phone's working well otherwise, I'm reluctant to get a new phone
altogether. We'll see what happens. Perhaps it's time to relegate my iPhone 8
to a kind of iPod to replace that iPhone 6 I couldn't get to play TV shows on
the locked screen. LOL Have a great day.

Re: iPhone 8 sluggish after phone calls in iOS 14

2021-07-28 Thread Gerardo Corripio
Not at all. I've heard of others with iPhone 8 who are using the update just
fine. So you don't have to always be restarting the whole thing, just turn off
wait a few seconds, and turn VoiceOver on again. Hope this helps!

RE: iPhone 8 sluggish after phone calls in iOS 14

2021-07-28 Thread Richard Turner
It sounds like you may want to try a Reset Network Settings.
You won't lose any data, you will have to log in again to things like Wi-Fi and
any VPN's if you use them, which I don't so not sure about that one.

I'm trying to get myself to think of the iPhone as a hand-held computer that
happens to also make phone calls. Computers get into a state when you have to
do a reboot, and I am guessing you already did the standard reboot of holding
the power button and the home button down at the same time for about 6 to 10
seconds until the Apple comes back. If you haven't done that, try that first.
If it is still a problem, try the Reset network settings under Settings,
General, Reset.
Avoid the one that says reset all settings, and especially the one that says
erase data and reboot or whatever it says.

HTH,

Richard

Hello again, Listers,

latest iOS 14. Since last Friday night when I took the plunge, each day brings
some new issue. Today's issue is this: If I'm checking e-mail or reading and my

slow in responding to gestures on the screen and to keyboard commands using my
