tabs in apps being pronounced as tab bar?

2021-10-20 Thread Adam Morris

Hi all,
Have two iPhones running 15.
One of them when I'm in an app like the phone etc says tab bar when on
the four tabs at the bottom.

The other just says contacts tab without saying it's a tab bar.
There is a setting somewhere in VO to make this happen.
If anyone can tell me what needs doing to make both phones not say tab
bar when on the bottom row of buttons that would be great.

TIA.

RE: Amazon Music Kills Voiceover

2021-10-20 Thread Alan Lemly
I’d recommend you start Amazon Music, execute the More options button in the
upper right corner of the screen, swipe to Settings and double tap, swipe to
Hands free with Alexa and turn that switch off. I’m not experiencing the
problem described in this thread and I have that switch turned off.

RE: App that pays you for walking

2021-10-20 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Why would I want to do what? I'm not interested in jail breaking my iPhone, so
someone else would have to answer that question, but I'd assume it's because
they're interested in customizing IOS in a way that they can't do with vanilla
IOS. As I said, even though you can still jail break IOS, it isn't as popular
as it used to be because Apple has made IOS more and more customizable over the
years.

The reason I looked up jail breaking was because I wanted to correct some
Android users who think jail breaking iPhones is a big cottage industry. Again,
as I said, even though it's still possible it's not the cottage industry it
used to be.

I looked this up the other day, and there are tools to jail break IOS 14. I
didn't see anything for IOS 15 though.

I looked this up because some Android users were talking about jail breaking
IOS, and since I hear so little about it, I wanted to see if it was even still
a thing. Apparently it is, but it's no where near as popular as it was five or
more years ago.

You can't install an app on an iPhone unless it is in the App Store or at least
you can't unless your iPhone is jailbroken and I don't even know if currently
there are jailbreaks for iOS 14 let alone iOS 15.
Anyways, for those who asked if it was in the Canadian or US app stores the
answer is No, really all you have to do in order to find out is to open the App
Store app on your phone and to search for the name of the app. In some cases it
might be not so clear if an app has a very generic name, but in this case the
only thing which comes up here in Canada when you type in "Stepler" is an app
called "Steple" without the "r" at the end and whatever is said about that app
is I think in Japanese and furthermore it hasn't been updated in a year.
When you Google "Stepler App" you find a link to it in the Norwegian app store,
but that of course doesn't really help.

Hi,

I recently discovered Stepler, an app that kind of pays you for doing steps.
For every 1000 steps you do, you will earn one point. You can get up to 20
points for doing up to 2 steps a day. It's also possible to earn bonus
points for doing 5000, 1 and 15000 steps a day. When you have a certain
amount of points, you can exchange them into coupons for amazon and other
online shops. The app is totally free. Steps are counted by wearing an Apple
watch or by carrying your iPhone around. In order to receive bonus points, you
have to allow stepler to access the number of steps from Apple health. I will
now send you a link that you can open with your iPhone to download the app. By
using this link, you will earn ten bonus points. Happy walking!

It doesn't actually pay. The person trades earned points for product discounts

You can't install an app on an iPhone unless it is in the App Store or at least
you can't unless your iPhone is jailbroken and I don't even know if currently

Anyways, for those who asked if it was in the Canadian or US app stores the
answer is No, really all you have to do in order to find out is to open the App
Store app on your phone and to search for the name of the app. In some cases it
might be not so clear if an app has a very generic name, but in this case the
only thing which comes up here in Canada when you type in "Stepler" is an app
called "Steple" without the "r" at the end and whatever is said about that app

When you Google "Stepler App" you find a link to it in the Norwegian app store,
but that of course doesn't really help.

Does this really install multiple copies of the app or just give you multiple
icons to the same app? I'd assume it's just the same app with multiple icons,
like if you have the Mail app running and you can get to it from either the
Mail app on your home page or the App Switcher.

To remove just the icon without uninstalling the app, follow Anna's

Hi,

It is possible, though, to have more than one instance of an app on your phone.
You could have an icon that opens Pages on your first home screen and another
on a page with apps you use for work, for example. To do that, open App
Library, enter Edit mode, and drag the app to whichever home screen you want.
You can do this as many times as you like with any app.

RE: Multiple Copies of an App?

2021-10-20 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Does this really install multiple copies of the app or just give you multiple
icons to the same app? I'd assume it's just the same app with multiple icons,
like if you have the Mail app running and you can get to it from either the
Mail app on your home page or the App Switcher.

To remove just the icon without uninstalling the app, follow Anna's
instructions but use the remove from home page option instead of the delete app
option.

Best,
Anna

Hi, Group.
Is it possible that someone installs multiple copies of an app to their iPhone?
The reason I am asking that some times I feel as I have installed an app more
than once to my phone. Is this just my false assumption or I, in fact, have
installed some apps multiple times?

Thanks!

Not if for 30 days I walked 20,000+ steps & you are paid with gift cards & not
cash. Of course, it has been a year & a half, so payment method may have

RE: App that pays you for walking

2021-10-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I guess that depends on your perspective and how much you walk. If you can earn
$2 a month for something you do anyways and that can be easily redeemed for
something you would buy anyways then $24 a year is $24 of free money.
However, I am usually a bit suspicious myself when it comes to such offers
where you seemingly get something for free, most such offers do come with some
sort of hidden cost and reading the app desdcription in the Norwegian app store
it did mention that you do have to share all sorts of stuff with them including
your location and identifiers which means this is of course just another app
which uses that information for targeted advertising when you later on browse
the web etc.

the payout for steps is a waste of time. It will take years to build up enough
points to cash in for spending. I deleted the app after a month of have earned

Best,

Anna

installed and only if the app is not installed will it say "Redownload"

Hi, Group.

Is it possible that someone installs multiple copies of an app to their iPhone?
The reason I am asking that some times I feel as I have installed an app more
than once to my phone. Is this just my false assumption or I, in fact, have
installed some apps multiple times?

Thanks!

Yes, that is correct, but you typically have to confirm with your password once
you check out the items in your cart, but I personally don't find having to
type in my Amazon password inconvenient especially since I can search for items
much faster and browse the search results much faster and potentially read the
item details much faster with Jaws and using the various tools at my disposal
like headings, buttons and so on. Yes, I know these exist on the iPhone as
well, but I just find it easier to type "h", use heading level 2 to go from
search result to search result or press Alt + left arrow to go back a screen
than having to turn the rotor and flick up and down etc. But that is just my
preference and if others feel the app makes it easier then that is of course
great for them.

I realize that this might be the case for some people which is why I said " if
you have a computer with Jaws or NVDA why not use it" and not "why not just use
your computer with Jaws or NVDA".
I would definitely not want to be without my iPhone, but at the same time I
also would never consider not having a computer, there are way too many tasks I
do where the computer is 10 times more efficient and quick.
A few examples for me are creating and working with Excel, Writing and
especially editing longer passages of text, doing serious web browsing and also
my online banking since I prefer to print all confirmations for bill payments
and such to PDF files for archiving and while I could take a screenshot of a
confirmation page with the iPhone, it's just not quite the same and the
resulting file would not be accessible unless I performed OCR on it.

2021-10-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
When you Google "Stepler App" you find a link to it in the Norwegian app store,
but that of course doesn't really help.

should install the app directly from the link I sended.

Re: Multiple Copies of an App?

2021-10-20 Thread Richard Turner
Yes, and sometimes the Gremlins in iOS decide to do that for you.
I found that I had the Watch app in two different folders.
I think iOS 15 thought I needed it in my productivity folder, even though I
never moved it there.

I I've been pretty anal about keeping apps organized by folders since my first
device over 10 years ago.
So, the Gremlins were definitely messing with me.

Hi, Group.
Is it possible that someone installs multiple copies of an app to their iPhone?
The reason I am asking that some times I feel as I have installed an app more
than once to my phone. Is this just my false assumption or I, in fact, have
installed some apps multiple times?

Thanks!

RE: Amazon

2021-10-20 Thread sherrywells1157
I meant that Amazon on a computer will remember you so that you don't have to
log in. Like some others, I much prefer to just use Amazon on the computer.
Of course reordering things is easiest with the Echo as all you have to do is
to say reorder x then say buy it now once it is in the cart.

A few examples for me are creating and working with Excel, Writing and

Thank you so much for letting them know. The last time something went wrong I
had a heckuva time trying to even find where to let them know. I did, but I
have a feeling somebody else also did in a better place than I used. It was
really hard to do because it was on a website and the website wasn’t accepting
my input. Anyway, thank you so much for letting them know. Apparently they are
quite responsive once they know.

Gestures on 10 and up.

2021-10-20 Thread Carolyn
Here is a post from Rita Howells on the TTJ list.

Explanation of an Apple iPhone Home Screen in iOS 15:
Rita's iDevice Advice for October 18, 2021

Home Screen in iOS 15

Standard iPhone gestures such as a swipe up from the bottom
to go to the Home Screen or App Switcher are augmented for
VoiceOver users by providing additional haptics and audio
feedback.

The iPhone X and the later models do not have a Home button.

Touch Gestures replacing function of the Home button:

Starting at the bottom of the screen and slide one finger
up. You will feel three haptic vibrations referred to as
"clicks" (similar to the old "click" when pressing the Home
button). Each of these three clicks will activate a
function. Note: The first click alerts you that you are in
the feature.

Swipe up gestures:

To go home, swipe up, about 1/3rd of the way up, the screen
with one finger until you feel the first vibration.

To go to the app switcher, swipe up, about half of the way
up the screen, with one finger until you feel a 2nd
vibration.

When your Apple device is asleep, you can wake it up in one
of several ways, such as pressing the Home or Side button,
or tapping or lifting your device. You are then immediately
presented with the Lock Screen. This screen displays a
padlock icon in the center of the screen, with the padlock
either open or closed, depending on the current lock state
of your device. Directly below that are the current time
and the date, one above the other. This Lock Screen also
displays any notifications you may have received while your
device was asleep. Select models also display a flash light
icon in the bottom left, and a Camera icon in the bottom
right. By default, devices with Face ID hide notification
preview text until the device is unlocked.

To open your iPhone, you can place your finger on the Home
Button (devices with Touch ID), or glance at your device
(with Face ID if this feature is available).

To unlock your iPhone or iPad. You can slide up with one
finger, using the bar at the very bottom center of the
screen, to go Home. This places you on the Home Screen.

The Home Screen is divided into 5 distinct elements. These
include:

Status Bar

App Icons

Page Selector

Dock

Widgets, if enabled

the Status Bar is at the top of the screen, and the Dock is
located at the bottom of the screen, with app icons across
the bottom. The Dock displays the same app icons, no matter
which Home Screen page you are on..

The App Icon area, located between the Status Bar and the
Page Selector, is a grid of icons, representing all the apps
installed on your device.

The Page Selector is just above the Dock.

The Status Bar: (Top left and right of screen; This is not a
physical bar):

Many different icons can show up on the Status Bar,
depending on what services you have, etc. For example, an
airplane icon will replace the WiFi icon if your device is
in airplane mode. LTE, 3G, 4G, 5GE, or others may show up
depending on your current cellular service. There are
indicators for personal hotspot, a call indicator when a
call is in progress, location services icon, etc.

Normally on the top left side of the Status Bar, the time is
in numbers, like a Digital readout.

Further to the right, the Cellular signal strength is
represented by vertical bars. The stronger the signal, the
more bars are represented (a maximum of 4 bars can show up).

To the right of that is the Wi-Fi indicator which is two
downward curved lines pointing with a dot under the two
curved lines. The stronger the Wi-Fi signal, the more parts
of this graphic appear filled in.

At the far right is the Battery indicator which is like a
double A battery lying on its side and the center is filled
with the level of charge which changes as the charge is used
up or replenished.

Note that the Status Bar also appears at the top of the Lock
Screen.

App Icon Area:

The majority of the Home Screen is comprised of the app icon
area. This is a grid of apps, which is laid out with
usually six rows (vertically) of apps with four apps
(horizontally) in each row. Apps can be rearranged on the
Home Screen, so that they appear in the order you prefer.
You can even make folders which can store numerous apps. As
new apps are installed, they most commonly appear last on
the Home Screen. When you set up a new device, all Apple
apps appear on the Home Screen first, followed by any
third-party apps you may choose to install. Additional Home
Screen pages are automatically created as needed, so that as
new apps are installed, and the current Home Screen page is
filled up, more pages will automatically appear. You can
quickly swipe left and right between Home Screen pages
(Voiceover users must swipe with three fingers), or you can
use the Page Selector.

App icons on the Home Screen appear as squares with rounded
corners. Every app icon is the same size - about the size
of a thumbnail. Each app has a background color, an

In order to receive bonus points,
you have to allow stepler to access the number of steps from Apple health. I
will now send you a link that you can open with your iPhone to download the
app. By using this link, you will earn ten bonus points. Happy walking!

Hi,

I have been trying to find a good bird id app without much success until now.

I heard about the Merlin Bird Id app and have been trying it out, and so far I
am quite pleased with it.

They have packs that you can download of birds in different geographical areas.
So far, I have just downloaded the one for my area to try it out. It actually
has identified some birds which other apps were not able to id. They had
recently added the ability to identify birds from you recording the bird call
you are hearing. They also list the common birds in your area, and if you
choose one, you can hear a recorded bird call that someone has contributed to
the app.

So far, I am impressed, especially compared to some of the other apps I have
tried. I just wanted to pass this along in case anyone is interested.

I didn’t do it with the five click on the side button, but I did when it was
set for three clicks. I accidentally got emergency. There is a cancellation
spot there that you can hit. Also, it’s sets off an alarm if you have it set to
do so, so you know that you’re dialing. Which I am grateful for, because my
grandson hit my watch when they first came out with SOS and called 911 while he
was getting his diaper changed. :-)

If you dial your own countrys emergency number even though that isn’t the

So here in nz 111 is our dial for all services,

It all goes through to the emergency services as required.

It’s a reaction to dial your own code therefore most places make it work in

Subject: FW: Use Emergency SOS on your iPhone

Since I had put up incorrect information on my web site, I wanted to send the
instructions provided by Apple from their support page. I will be updating my
documentation but this is important information that everyone should have handy.

Use Emergency SOS on your iPhone

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208076

With Emergency SOS, you can quickly and easily call for help and alert your
emergency contacts.

Here's how it works

When you make a call with SOS, your iPhone automatically calls the local
emergency number. In some countries and regions, you might need to choose the
service that you need. For example, in China mainland you can choose police,
fire, or ambulance.

You can also add emergency contacts. After an emergency call ends, your iPhone
alerts your emergency contacts with a text message, unless you choose to
cancel. Your iPhone sends them your current location, and, for a period of time
after you enter SOS mode, it sends updates to your emergency contacts when your
location changes.

Call emergency services

Here's how to make the call on iPhone 8 or later:

Press and hold the side button and one of the Volume buttons until the
Emergency SOS slider appears.

Drag the Emergency SOS slider to call emergency services. If you continue to
hold down the side button and Volume button, instead of dragging the slider, a
countdown begins and an alert sounds. If you hold down the buttons until the
countdown ends, your iPhone automatically calls emergency services.

Here's how to make the call on iPhone 7 or earlier:

Rapidly press the side (or top) button five times. The Emergency SOS slider
will appear. (In India, you only need to press the button three times, then
your iPhone automatically calls emergency services.)

Drag the Emergency SOS slider to call emergency services.

After the call ends, your iPhone sends your Emergency contacts a text message
with your current location, unless you choose to cancel. If Location Services
is off, it will temporarily turn on. If your location changes, your contacts
will get an update, and you'll get a notification about 10 minutes later.

If you use the Emergency SOS shortcut, you need to enter your passcode to
re-enable Touch ID, even if you don't complete a call to emergency services.

Stop sharing your location

When your location is being shared, you'll get a reminder to stop every 4 hours
for 24 hours. To stop the updates, tap the status bar and select "Stop Sharing
Emergency Location."

End a call

If you start the countdown by accident, you can cancel. On iPhone 8 or later,
release the side button and Volume button. On iPhone 7 or earlier, press the
Stop button, then tap Stop Calling.

If you accidentally call emergency services, you can

I tried sending them an email when I was having a different accessibility bug,
but never got a reply.
I've sent them tweets before though, with mixed results.
Let's hope they get this fixed soon, doing lessons without being able to see
what you're typing is frustrating.

App that pays you for walking

2021-10-20 Thread Alexandra

In order to receive bonus points,
you have to allow stepler to access the number of steps from Apple health. I
will now send you a link that you can open with your iPhone to download the
app. By using this link, you will earn ten bonus points. Happy walking!

Regards, Alexandra

Thanks Sieghard,
Those were written based on bad information before I got a phone without a home
button and obviously needed editing.
I discovered two things just now though.

When I press and hold the power and volume down buttons, the emergency call
button comes up, with Cancel in focus, and if I hold it too long, it begins the
auto call to 911/emergency contacts. But, to get to the power off icon, I have
to flick left, not right on my 13 pro.

This may be a change as of iOS 15? The medical ID and location are other icons
on that screen.

I'm going to rewrite my insructions and stress the safer Settings, General,
Shut down method.

Thanks again,
Richard

Hi Richard,

There is one mistake in your list of commands, you write:

* Power off the iPhone by holding in the power button until the power off
icon appears, release the side button and double tap on the Power Off button.
Or, go to Settings, General, Shut down and double tap on shut down.

On an iPhone without a home button you push and hold the power button which is
also called side button for SIRI. In order to power off the phone you press and
hold the side button and volume down button at the same time until the power
off menu appears, this menu also includes the SOS/9 1 1 call button so make
sure you are not on it but to swipe right all the way until you get to "Power
Off" before you double tap.

I find telling
SIRI to "Open General Settings" and to then do a 4-finger tap near the bottom
of the screen is just as easy, this puts focus straight on the shutdown button,
but you still get the same menu except that focus is at least for me reliably
on the power off button if you do it this way.

This is taken from my version of the VoiceOver Gestures which is on my web site.
But here is the sections relating to phones with no home buttons.

For devices without a home button:
Side button replacing Home button commands
* Unlock Phone: Facial Recognition, or tap the Side button and enter
your passcode
* Accessibility Shortcut: Triple click of the Side button
* Screenshot: Simultaneously press and quickly release the Side button
and Volume Up button. Caution: if you hold the volume up and side power button
too long, you will activate the Emergency SOS and end up calling 911.
  * Activate Siri: Press and hold the Side button
* Reboot the iPhone: Press and release the volume up button, then the
volume down button, then hold in the side/power button for about 10 seconds or
until the Apple comes back and gradually fills in the image.
* Power off the iPhone by holding in the power button until the power off
icon appears, release the side button and double tap on the Power Off button.
Or, go to Settings, General, Shut down and double tap on shut down.
* Activate Apple Pay: Double click the Side button

New Gestures replacing function of the Home button Starting at the bottom of
the screen and slide one finger up. You will feel three haptic vibrations
referred to as "clicks" (similar to the old "click" when pressing the Home
button). Each of these three clicks will activate a function. Note: The first
click alerts you that you are in the feature.
* Return to the Home screen: From the bottom of the screen slide one
finger up until the second click. Lift your finger from the screen.
* Activate the App Switcher: From the bottom of the screen, slide one
finger up until the third click. Lift your finger from the screen.
* Activate Reachability mode (if enabled in Settings): From the bottom of
the screen, slide one finger up until you feel the first click. Quickly flick
down.

Notification and Control Center

Starting at the top of the screen, slide one finger down to feel the clicks.
*   Access

Allison, I absolutely am having problems with Duolingo! There is no work around
that I can find. It is very hard to get a hold of them. If anyone has any idea
how to get a hold of them I would deeply appreciate it. I am using it, but it’s
very difficult. Also, Amazon has broken. You can get two items on a page that
you ask for, but if you want to see the item and what it is and get to the cart
to put it in the cart you can’t do it. Someone told me that this was an issue
that is not because of voiceover but an issue that Amazon broke the app for
iPhone. However, I don’t think that’s the case. I can absolutely find no way
to contact them. Wondering if anybody else has been having trouble with Amazon

I thought at first that Duo Lingo wasn't allowing me to enter text, as I just
got that bonking noice every time I pressed a letter. I now know it is
accepting the text but, as you say, you can't see what you have written to

I am having the same problems others have mentioned here. It’s really hard not
to be able to see what you are writing. I did use it yesterday, but I don’t
like not being able to correct mistakes and knowing I just have to make them. I
don’t use Twitter, so I’m not sure how to contact them. I looked, and basically
there was no way to do this. I too did not see any way for a workaround.

RE: Amazon

2021-10-20 Thread CJ & AA MAY
Both are equally important to me, my iPhone and my computer. But I've found the
recent problems with using Amazon on my iPhone really frustrtating as I'm
starting my Christmas shopping early with surgery just around the corner.
I can use the computer, of course, but using the iPhone with Amazon is quicker
and simpler as it remembers who I am, and I don't need to log in, and I can
just use my fingerprint to confirm an order.
Alison
I like to use Amazon on my iPhone as it is quicker and simpler, not needing to
log

RE: October 18 Apple Event

2021-10-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Here in Canada we were around Par with the USD and for a short time the CAD was
actually worth more than the USD around 2008
But 7 or so years before that 1 USD was over $1.60 CAD and now we are around
$1.25 to $1.30 CAD for 1 USD.
It's all relative anyways, the CAD is worth less, but people also earn more
here in Canadian Dollars. I think some US states have a minimum wage, but I
don't think all of them do. Here in British Columbia minimum wage as of this
June is $15.20 which currently is equivalent to approx. $12.30 USD. That is
what I have to pay, for example, a 15 or 16-year old high school kid for which
it might be their first job and of course if they are not a student under 18
who don't make much in terms of employment insurance and Canada Pension Plan
then there are additional costs on top of that for me for those things. Now,
don't get me wrong, I am not saying this is wrong because after all, if
somebody does work a minimum wage job and that is their main income and they
work full time which means around 2000 or 2100 hours a year this means they
make around $31,000 a year give or take a bit which is barely enough if you
have to pay rent, eat and have a few other costs especially if you live in an
expensive city like Vancouver or Toronto. But even in my small little northern
town a 1-bedroom apartment or basement suite is easily $1,000 to $1,200 a month
and in other places you are lucky if you find one for $1,500.

Just because your currency also has the "Dollar" name does not mean it is
comparable to the US Dollar.
After all, an iPhone which costs $1,000 US costs 50,000 or 60,000 in the
Philippines because a US Dollar is worth 51 or 52 Philippine Pesos.

Yes, I did listen to it now, not sure, but I think maybe the first 10 or 15
minutes were about Apple Music and the new Airpods. These latest generation 3
Airpods sound interesting, but I still don't like the very expensive price. On
the one hand I'd love to try a set but then again I really don't know if I want
to spend whatever the Canadian price will be, $179 US will most likely mean
they are at least $249 here or maybe $259 to $279 Canadian, add to that our
combined 12% taxes in British Columbia and it will be a $300 or just over $300
set of earbuds. I have tons of points from my credit card and could easily buy
a pair this way, but there is still something which makes me think not twice
but thrice about spending that much on two little things I stick in my ear
especially since I don't really like to stick things into my ear canal and
probably wouldn't use them when I am going back and forth to my store every

new fridge and I'd love to get new kitchen cabinets and inf act I'd love to
take our bedroom and combine it with a small one next door for a larger master
