When using Siri with VoiceOver, Remember to Give That Beep a Chance

2022-12-27 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

For the first 48 hours or so after activating my new 14, I thought the
device might be defective as almost 90% of my Siri requests were not being
understood by the phone.

For example, when making requests such as, "Call Richard" or "Call Sieghard,
mobile", Siri would respond with something like, "Could you say that again?
I didn't quite understand you."

Even when I asked Siri for the current weather conditions in a particular
city, I would receive an error response. This even happened when I had my
Apple Earpods, attached. Now that I think about it, I couldn't even get
Siri to open the Calendar app.

Now keep in mind that it wasn't until I purchased the 14 that I had any
experience with OS 16, let alone OS 16.2.

I was so tired during that first 48-hour period, after purchasing iPhone 14,
because of a lack of sleep, that I blamed myself for doing something wrong
even though I could not pinpoint my error.

Of course I searched Google for solutions but could not find any articles on
the subject. This led me to believe that the issue was not widespread, at
the very least.

I was just beginning to consider taking the new phone back to the Apple
Store when, near the end of that first 48-hour period, I decided to upgrade
my beloved iPad Pro 2017 from iPad OS 15.x to iPad 16.2. Immediately after
doing so, I experienced the exact same phenomenon on the iPad.

To say that my mind was blown, would be the understatement of the holiday
season.

After experiencing the same glitch on two devices, one new and the other
that, until the update to the latest OS, had performed flawlessly, I
realized that the issue was with 16.2 and not a hardware problem.

So I asked myself what had changed between OS 15.x and OS 16.x. The answer,
which I had read about in this community, was the Siri beep prompt.

As many had reported and discussed, on-list, Apple, in its infinite wisdom,
changed the beep prompt that VoiceOver users hear, when activating Siri.

Now I do my best to read virtually every thread posted to this list. This
can be an overwhelming task, at times, so, sometimes I simply miss the
proverbial "meat & potatoes" of a thread. I write this to say that what I
discovered, organically, has most likely already been described, on-list. So
I apologize if this is redundant.

Okay, what occurred to me was that the most significant difference between
the legacy Siri beep prompt and the new Siri beep prompt was the length of
time it takes the new prompt to end. The difference is less than one second
but it is a significant difference, all the same.

So I asked myself, what would happen if, instead of speaking to Siri near
the beginning of the prompt, as I have always done, I waited until the
prompt completely ended.

So, I tried it and . Yes, you guessed it; that is all it took in order to
bring Siri recognition back to virtually 100% on both devices.

After that, I realized that I have been, to a much lesser degree
experiencing the same problem on both of my Apple TV models. These models,
also, use the new Siri beep prompt. Waiting just that extra little moment,
before speaking to Siri made a universe full of difference.

So, if you are finding that Siri is not as accurate in its responses as it
was in previous versions of the OS, after activating Siri, wait until the
new beep prompt has completely ended, before speaking, and you should notice
quite a difference in the results.

When using Siri with VoiceOver, remember to give that beep a chance, to end,
that is, (smile), before speaking.

Mark

RE: An Alexa Compatible Thermostat, Anyone?

2022-12-27 Thread M. Taylor
Hello James.

Thank you so much for the link. Yes, having tactile buttons is so very
important to me. I shutter at the thought of having to completely depend upon
an external device in order to adjust basic functions of the thermostat.

I will definitely give this a look.

Thank you again.

I’ve had a Sensi model st55 for 2 years now.Be sure you get this cheaper
$80.00, model available from Amazon. It has buttons that control selecting
heat or air conditioning and changing the temperature and more. It also works
with Alexa and there is an app for I Phone and I think, Android.
Note, the more expensive model is flat screen only. No buttons. The buttons
are important for a blind person to use the thermostat in case your internet
goes down.

The $80.00, thermostat with buttons is model ST55. Here is an Amazon link.

Honeywell T9 or T10 would probably be my choice, we have a Honeywell T5 which
has long since been discontinued, but it works well although it is a touch
screen thermostat so if for some reason your internet goes down you would have
a hard time setting anything on it, but I believe many smart thermostats would
be the same way.

Hello Everyone,

Okay, I know that I have asked this question before but, now that I must buy a
new thermostat for my home, within the next week or so, as my 32 year old model
is starting to fail on a virtually daily basis, what Alexa compatible
thermostat do you either recommend and / or are currently using?

I am aware of the Nest brand models; I thought they were Google-only models but
I think they also can work with Alexa, right? Does anyone have any experience
with Nest / Alexa compatibility?

Also, I know that Honeywell makes Alexa models but, from what I have read on
the web, today, one must setup an online account with Honeywell before the
device can be used with Alexa. That sounds like a lot of trouble to me; maybe.

The only thing I know for certain is that I want a model that will work with
Amazon Alexa, out of the box, because I do not want to use a third-party app,
is I can avoid doing so.

I have come to trust the Alexa app for iOS and iPad OS.

RE: Accessibility of music service aps

2022-12-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
And as a last comment, having a connected receiver which has some capabilities
like Sonos and hooking up a Sonos Port to it is a bit like having a smart TV
and an Apple TV.
Especially if the receiver's app is accessible you may think you don't really
need a Port, but theoretically if you have an accessible smart TV with Netflix,
Disney Plus, Apple TV, Prime Video and even an app store where you can get more
stuff you don't really need an Apple TV.
However, you still may like or prefer an Apple TV because the accessibility I
think is probably still better than just about any smart TV and while I don't
know how fully accessible and awesome the Denon app for your receiver is, the
Sonos app is incredibly accessible and then there is of course the benefit of
integrating your existing setup into the Sonos system which I explained in my
previous email. Anybody who is serious about Sonos and is building a multi-room
or whole house system would want to do this unless of course you for some
reason want to add separate Sonos speakers in the same room where your existing
system is, but then that is silly since it will be more expensive than a Sonos
Port and I would assume you have your Denon receiver with whatever speaker
configuration because you really like it.
In my case my Sony receiver and the speakers I had on it were better than most
Sonos speakers, but I eventually opted to switch it for a Sonos Arc and
surround package simply because it also sounds great and it's just so much more
convenient and takes up so much less space since I had large speakers before
which were on a stand and took up a lot of room and there is of course all the
cables I needed.
As you can guess by now, I am a big Sonos fan, I bought my first Sonos gear in
2009 and I loved it when Sonos was offering the 30% upgrade credit where you
can basically get a 30% discount on new Sonos gear if you decommission any of
the old gear you may have. In the very beginning you could get a shipping label
to send it back to Sonos since once you used the upgrade credit, the speaker
you used for that wouldn't work any more, but that has changed and you can now
use the upgrade credit and then still sell the old speaker. The buyer can set
it up and activate it on their account, the only thing is that Sonos does keep
track of serial numbers so a second person could not use that same speaker
again to get a discount. There are actually people who very specifically look
for very old Sonos gear on eBay which hasn't been used to get an upgrade
discount because you might be able to buy a first generation Connect for $50 or
$80, but if the upgrade credit associated with it has not been used, you could
buy a new wireless Sub which costs $750 and get it for 30% off so you spend $80
or even $100 to get a $225 discount and if you were to buy a full surround
setup or a new Sonos Amp with in-wall speakers you might get a discount around
$400 or $500.
I can't wait what Sonos will come out with in 2023, typically they release 2
new products a year, this year the second in October was a new Sub Mini (can't
remember what the first was), in 2023 it seems already confirmed there is a new
speaker called Optimus which is going to be a better sounding Sonos One or
Five, not quite sure. It is supposed to be Wi-Fi 6 capable and in addition also
support full Bluetooth streaming in addition to Airplay 2 which most Sonos
speakers have.
There are also rumours about a new flagship soundbar and while that might be
cool, I never give up hope until they finally add a high-end Sonos headset into
the mix which would allow me to have a headset which is part of my Sonos system
without having to resort to work-arounds like connecting a Bluetooth
receiver/transmitter to a Sonos Port or stuff like that which in any case never
would sound as good as a good headset which would get its signal via your Wi-Fi.

You could always get a Sonos Port and hook it up to your Denon receiver since
this would then also allow you to bring the speakers connected to your receiver
into the Sonos system, group them and so on.
Sonos also has it's own voice assistant and it can live alongside Alexa on any
voice enabled Sonos speaker like the Roam, Move, One or any of the soundbars.
It works great for changing volume and it's fantastic if you have multiple
Sonos speakers and you want to group them. You never have to open the app any
more, I for example often want our living room Arc and surround system grouped
with a set of Sonos One speakers in the kitchen because then my wife can watch
a movie and I can listen in the kitchen if I am still doing something. I simply

group with living room and kitchen and named it cooking, I could also say "Hey
Sonos, group living room and kitchen Sonos, basically you say you want to group
whatever your speaker names are and it's actually amazing how fast it happens,
Sonos voice assistant barely says "Grouping cooking" when the audio already
starts playing.
In the same way if I am done and join my wife in the living room I just say
"Hey Sonos, ungroup cooking" as I am walking out of the kitchen and it's done.
Similarly if I have Sonos playing in say 3 rooms, bedroom, kitchen and living
room, I can ask the Sonos assistant to change the volume which changes it for
the entire group or I can ask it to change the volume in the living room or
mute the bedroom etc. For actual system control it works incredibly well.
Before I bought my first Sonos surround sound setup, a Playbar, set of Play 1
speakers for rear surrounds and a Sonos Sub I had a high-end Sony Elite series
7.1 surround sound receiver and while this was before the days when just about
everything was connected and had an app, I had what back then was a Sonos
Connect hooked up to it via a digital optical connection. In this way Sonos was
just another input source and if I wanted to listen to music in the living room
I selected the optical digital input and after that I didn't need to do
anything any more with my receiver since my music selection and all that was
then done via the Sonos app. And since the Connect and now the new Port also
has analogue inputs, I was able to connect my Sony receiver's analogue outputs
in turn back into the Connect and this way any other source connected to my
Sony receiver like CD player, Blu-Ray, satellite TV receiver could be played on
my Sonos system throughout the house. If you are building a Sonos system and
have an existing stereo system getting a Port is almost inevitable and it also
happens to be one of the less expensive Sonos items.

on the wireless charging pad when I go to bed say around 11 and I check it when
I wake up around 2 or 3 then it's always at 100%. Not sure how this charging to
80% is supposed to work with the balance getting topped off towards morning. I
have a sleep focus set which turns on wind down at 10:30 PM and my alarm goes
off at 7 AM so if the phone uses this as a guideline for when my battery should
be fully charged on would expect that it goes to 80% until around maybe 5 or 6
AM and then the remaining 20% are done and this is not the case.

I don't leave my iPhone 13 Mini on a charger when not in use but I do have it
connected to a charger when I go to bed at night. I would recommend you go to
Settings, Battery, Battery health and charging and make sure Optimized battery
charging is turned on. On that same screen, you can check what your battery's

I'm satisfied with.

Enjoy your new iPhone 14 Pro and all the best getting it customized exactly to

leaving an iPhone 14 on a charger, when not in use.

You old-timers will recall that, once upon a time, it was recommended that one
not leave a phone on a charger, when not in use, full-time. It was thought
that doing so would shorten the life of the battery.

I found an Apple community thread that discusses this and the conclusion is
that leaving a 14 attached to a charger, when not in use, will, in no way
damage or shorten the life of the battery.

Question: Does anyone have any credible statements / sources to the contrary?
If so, please post them as this can make a difference to the life of the
battery, in the long run.

Unlike in the past, I want to consider all aspects of keeping my iPhone battery
healthy from the very beginning.

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

RE: Is it safe to remove phone from list

2022-12-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
And what difference does it make, the phone is gone and I would not want to
keep it on my account whether it's a security risk or not. There is no way to
tell if somebody tore it apart to sell the battery, screen and whatever other
pieces can be sold or if somebody finds a way to set it up as a new phone. If I
reset a phone completely and sell it I will also remove it from my account even
though not doing so doesn't also pose any risk, but it also serves no purpose.

Hello Max,

Wow! I am so surprised at your reply from Apple.

There was a time when Apple maintained a list of stolen phones which would
prevent the phone from being activated.

In fact, a friend of mine purchased a phone off of Craigslist and when we tried
to activate it, it failed to do so.

When I called Apple, on his behalf, I was told that the phone, based on the
IMEI number, had been placed on a special list because it had been reported as
stolen. Granted, this was many, many years ago but I find it difficult to
believe that this system has been abandoned.

I agree with you that the phone has, more likely than not, been abandoned as
the thief could not activate it but, still, perhaps you should consider erasing
the device? I believe that if you elect to erase the phone, then, when next
powered on, it will automatically erase itself but still be tied to your
account.

As I think about this, were I in your situation, I would erase the phone and
leave it on my account for, at least, 1 year or so. Then, after that, I might,
might remove it from my account. As far as I know, leaving it associated with
your account is not hurting anything and does not pose a security risk to you.

Just some food for thought.

Hi Mark and all.
Well the call to Apple did not offer any real help.
They did not offer any service after the phone was stolen regarding putting it
on a list. The lady I spoke to just said what ever I do it will just rely on
the pass code. So I will remove it from my iCloud account so at that will be
safe. If they still have it they can set it up as new!. After 8 months I doubt
it. Probably broken up for parts by now.
Thanks all.

RE: An Alexa Compatible Thermostat, Anyone?

Hi Gordon,

Thank you for your post.

So, if Apple added the optimized battery setting, then it would seem that even
when the phone is connected to a charger, it will not charge to 100% even
though the A/C current is available, or so I would think. This would lead me
to believe that leaving the phone connected to a charger would have no
detrimental affect on the device.

Batteries, batteries, batteries. It would seem that, even at the end of 2022,
they are still the weakest link in the technology food chain.  I don't know;
just a thought.

You know what? In my mind, I think of batteries in the same way as I think of

It's not good to leave the charger connected all the time. This is why Apple
added that feature in battery settings called optimized charging.
This learns your sleep habits and keeps your battery at 80 percent for most of
the night and kicks in and finishes charging up to 100 percent before you wake
up. Lithium ion batteries don't like stress. They are under the most stress
when fully charged at 100 percent and below about
15 percent. So that's why Apple says keeping your battery between these points
is best for long life.

I'm satisfied with.

that leaving a 14 attached to a charger, when not in use, will, in no way
damage or shorten the life of the battery.

Yes, I have noticed the difference in the temp of the charging brick. Hmm!

I believe that the old advice you are referring to was in regard to NiCad
batteries, which for the most part are no longer in use. The Lithium Ion
batteries used today are much more forgiving, and as far as I know, will not be
damaged by staying on a charger.
Also, the chargers used today are smarter, in that they contain a chip that
will stop current when the battery reaches a full charge.
If you touch your Apple charging brick while it is charging, it feels very
warm, but after the charge is complete it is cold. This is because it is no
longer passing current to the battery.

Re: Charging Your New Phone, Anyone?

2022-12-27 Thread Gordon
It's not good to leave the charger connected all the time. This is why
Apple added that feature in battery settings called optimized charging.
This learns your sleep habits and keeps your battery at 80 percent for
most of the night and kicks in and finishes charging up to 100 percent
before you wake up. Lithium ion batteries don't like stress. They are
under the most stress when fully charged at 100 percent and below about
15 percent. So that's why Apple says keeping your battery between these
points is best for long life.

RE: Is it safe to remove phone from list

2022-12-27 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Max,

Thanks all.
Max.

Accessibility of music service aps

2022-12-27 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'm shopping around for a new music service. It looks like right now I'm
deciding between Spotify, Deezer and Amazon Music. I'll play around with each
as much as I can, but I'm wondering if anyone wants to share their opinions on
the accessibility of the apps for these services.

Right now I'm using YouTube Music, which I like, but I'm looking for something
that will be supported on more of the platforms I'm starting to use. I just
bought a Sonos Roam, and I have a Denon receiver running HEOS. I also have
smart speakers right now from Amazon, Google and Apple. I know I can use
Airplay and Chromecast, but a service or assistant that supports these services
would be a nice to have.

Re: Is it safe to remove phone from list

2022-12-27 Thread Agent086b
Hi Mark and all.
Well the call to Apple did not offer any real help.
They did not offer any service after the phone was stolen regarding putting it
on a list. The lady I spoke to just said what ever I do it will just rely on
the pass code. So I will remove it from my iCloud account so at that will be
safe. If they still have it they can set it up as new!. After 8 months I doubt
it. Probably broken up for parts by now.
Thanks all.
Max.

RE: An Alexa Compatible Thermostat, Anyone?

2022-12-27 Thread Katrina Anderson
Good food for thought Sieghard. I didn't know there is a Resideo (spelling
taken from a recent message from TCC) app. Although it might not work with
my thermostat, out of curiosity, perhaps I'll check the Resideo app out.
Some time ago, a notification about a name change to Resideo was received,
but I didn't need to change/do anything. Perhaps new customers will need to
use a different app, but I continue to use the Total Connect Comfort (TCC)
app with great success. I still receive messages, alerts, etc. from TCC.
The bottom of these messages include reference to Resideo, but there is also
reference to Honeywell and TCC. As mentioned in a separate message, I
acquired this Honeywell thermostat 7.5 years ago, so it may no longer be
available.

Keep in mind there are two apps, the Total Connect Comfort and Residio and
at least to my knowledge Residio is where Honeywell is going with the other
one being older devices.

Hello Katrina,

Thank you so much for confirming that the Honeywell app, for iOS, is
VoiceOver compatible and that the Honeywell devices can be managed by Amazon
Alexa. This is great info.

Hi Mark,

I have a Honeywell thermostat, which I access via Alexa to perform basic
functions. Yes, I had to register with Honeywell and/or Total Connect
Comfort (TCC), but I don't recall the process being difficult. I've had
this thermostat for several years, and only recently discovered it could be
accessed via Alexa. The process of connecting Alexa to the device was easy
as I recall.

The thermostat can be accessed via the TCC app, which is very accessible
via voiceover. When I first got the thermostat years ago, before I found
out about the app, JAWS had trouble accessing all features (e.g. programming
the device), so I relied on sighted help. However, JAWS had no problem at
all with the website when I tried a year or so ago. Rarely go to the
website though as the TCC app is great for programming, etc. And, again
Alexa does a great job with the basics like ID of indoor temperature,
changing the temperature, etc.

Hello Everyone,

Okay, I know that I have asked this question before but, now that I must
buy a new thermostat for my home, within the next week or so, as my 32 year
old model is starting to fail on a virtually daily basis, what Alexa
compatible thermostat do you either recommend and / or are currently using?

I am aware of the Nest brand models; I thought they were Google-only models
but I think they also can work with Alexa, right? Does anyone have any
experience with Nest / Alexa compatibility?

Also, I know that Honeywell makes Alexa models but, from what I have read
on the web, today, one must setup an online account with Honeywell before
the device can be used with Alexa.  That sounds like a lot of trouble to me;
maybe.

The only thing I know for certain is that I want a model that will work
with Amazon Alexa, out of the box, because I do not want to use a
third-party app, is I can avoid doing so.

I have come to trust the Alexa app for iOS and iPad OS.

Mark

RE: An Alexa Compatible Thermostat, Anyone?

2022-12-27 Thread Katrina Anderson
My Honeywell programmable thermostat has buttons around the visual display. I
am able to do some basic things without the Internet, app or Alexa, but since I
am totally blind, I have to rely on good notes (not enough space for braille
labels). I am very pleased with this thermostat, and what is especially cool
is that I had nothing to do with selecting it. The thermostat was
selected/installed by the company/workers who installed a new furnace and AC
7.5 years ago. In case it would prove helpful, details about my thermostat
follow:
Honeywell Thermostat Model and/or Serial #: Focus Pro TH6320WF
Above based on the Model 6000

Honeywell T9 or T10 would probably be my choice, we have a Honeywell T5 which
has long since been discontinued, but it works well although it is a touch
screen thermostat so if for some reason your internet goes down you would have
a hard time setting anything on it, but I believe many smart thermostats would
be the same way.

Subject: An Alexa Compatible Thermostat, Anyone?

Mark

connecting external devices to Iphone or Ipad

2022-12-27 Thread Joe Paton
Hello,
Looking through apple's on-line resources, usb and flash card readers
can be connected via the camera kit, and those that may require more
power need the camera kit 3.  So this kit provides connectivity to
either lightening ports, or usb 3 in the cases of recent iphones and
ipads.

Apples guidelines say that these kits can facilitate usb or external drives,
and or, flash drives.  What concerns me, is that although mention is made of
the ability to view photo file types, no mention is made of accessing audio
files.
is there a connector either third partyy or via apple, connector that will
allow me to access audio books on a USB device, or CF card reader connected to
an iphone 12, or ipad with a usb 3 port?

Sorry for the rambling nature of this question.

Thanks.
Happy new year to all.

RE: Disappearing notes.

2022-12-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It would depend on which accounts you had setup on your own phone and if you
have all of these accounts also on your new phone.
I, for example, have 3 accounts: there is iCloud, I then have my business email
which is via Microsoft 365 and also my personal Outlook email also through
Microsoft 365.
I can have notes under each account and as long as I set up all of these
accounts on my next phone and make sure Notes is turned on under each account
they should always be there as at least with Exchange and Microsoft 365 they
are saved in the cloud just as is the case with my contacts. My iCloud notes
also have never been an issue. I would first check to make sure Notes is turned
on.

Hi list! So I opened my notes app today in order to see a note that I had
saved a long time ago, and I could not find it. I had several notes from my
old phone that I previously had no problems accessing on my new phone. Now
they are all gone, and I did not delete them. does anyone know what could have
happened to them or what I can do to find them again? I am currently running
iOS 15.7

RE: An Alexa Compatible Thermostat, Anyone?

2022-12-27 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

I learned my heat pump will work with the thermostat I'm getting, and
maintenance will install it for me. All I have to do now is wait for it to
arrive, and that should be Saturday.

You definitely want to talk to an installer if you have a Heat pump since not
all thermostats can handle them.
As for the C wire that is strictly a third wire which delivers power to the
thermostat, I believe 12 or 24 Volts and you most likely have it.
My 26-year old gas furnace which when I bought the house had one of these $10
or $15 thermostats with a physical slider only had 2-wire cables running to the
thermostats, but the furnace has a terminal for the third wire so when I bought
our Honeywell T5 smart thermostat I installed it where the old thermostat was
which is downstairs and more or less on the other side of the wall from the
furnace so it was easy to just pull a 3-wire cable through the wall.
I am most likely getting rid of natural gas entirely next year switching to a
high-efficiency cold climate heat pump with backup electric heat and at that
point I will have to see which thermostat I can use. When I renovated the
building where my retail store is located and installed 2 rooftop Anmerican
Standard heat pump with natural gas backup units I had to also go with a
thermostat from American Standard since any of the consumer models you
typically see like Google Nest, Ecobee and so on were not compatible. However,
the app is also accessible and it can also be connected to Alexa and/or Google
Home so it really didn't matter.
I wish I could get away with only an air source heat pump, but where I live in
northwestern British Columbia it unfortunately can get too cold for that to be
an option and you still need a backup heat source which means either electric
or natural gas. Our government really pushes electric and to get rid of natural
gas altogether because British Columbia gets well over 90% of its power from
hydro electric sources, primarily 2 and soon it will be 3 dams in a row on the
Peace River in Northeastern BC so we have clean power and plenty of it. We also
have a wood stove which I love to use when it's really cold as it's just the
most pleasant and comfortable type of heat. The week before Christmas we had
more than a week with temperatures of -30 to -35 Celsius at night (that's -22
to -27 Fahrenheit) and during the day it rarely got warmer than -25 Celsius
(-13 Fahrenheit) and here my setup works great, our thermostat is in the
basement which is used rarely so we just set it to 16 Celsius (60 Fahrenheit),
I then close all vents upstairs and run the woodstove which heats our open
concept 1,100 square foot upstairs perfectly and the furnace comes on for maybe
5 minutes once or twice an hour.

Hi.

I'm supposed to get one of these thermostats for Christmas, but the one I'm
interested in requires a C wire to work. I don't know if that's common on heat
pumps, or even what it's for. I'd appreciate information on this. My heat pump
is about 15 years old, so it may not be a problem.

Thanks in advance for any information.

The Total Connect Comfort is an older thing for Honeywell, thermostats like the
T10 use what initially was called the "Lyric" app, then it got renamed to
"Honeywell Home" and a few months ago it got renamed again to "residio" which I
believe is another company Honeywell bought.

RE: LOCATING AN APP ON THE IPHHONE SE

2022-12-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
There is no search field, you can either follow Christoper's steps to move to
the app library or you can use 2 other ways:

1. Spotlight search: Touch any item on the home screen and then swipe down with
3 fingers
2. Use handwriting: if you have handwriting in your rotor, turn the rotor to
handwriting when you are on the home screen and type the first letter of the
app you want, for example, if you write an "s", for me 17 apps show up, I can
then either use a 2-finger swipe down to move through that list or write a
second and, if I want a third character, each one will narrow the list further.

There are several ways to do this, but what I do is to go to the App Library.
You can get there by performing a three finger right from the last home page.
Now you can flick around all of your installed apps until you find the app
you're looking for. You can also perform a three finger up to sort your apps
alphabetically or use the search field at the top of the screen.

Disappearing notes.

2022-12-27 Thread Barbara Stahl
I am currently running
iOS 15.7

Air Pods 2nd generation

2022-12-27 Thread William Outman
Just bought Air Pods 2nd generation today.
Is there anything about pairing and operation I need to know that isn’t
obvious. I am also planning to carry these over to the phone upgrade whenever
that happens.

Siri and dictation tones

2022-12-27 Thread William Outman
Good morning.
For about the last day I have not had my Siri and dictation tones for some
reason. Dictation works but I cannot get acknowledgement Siri heard me say Hey
Siri.
That’s the only thing that seems amiss in a major way with my iPhone 8 Plus
running iOS 16.2
Checked the settings I could think of and restarted the phone. All other
sounds are fine.

What device are you using to play the music?

We have Sonos, and I have home sharing enabled in iTunes, so my wife can access
my entire library through Sonos.

Now, No extra cost for family sharing involved.

Through iTunes home sharing, you can share your library over your network.

Now, if you want her to have the same access to all of Apple music that is not
part of your personal library from your CDs, and she is using her own Apple ID,
and you pay for Apple music family sharing, she will have the same access to
everything that you have. At least that is my understanding. Of course, always
check with Apple to be sure.

RE: An Alexa Compatible Thermostat, Anyone?

2022-12-27 Thread Kevin Minor

Yes. It works with the Alexa app. No need for the pricy thermostats. This one
works great.

Hello Sarai,

This is most interesting. So, the model is called the Amazon Basic Smart
Thermostat? The price is definitely right. I will look it up.

Thank you, Sarai.

Hi Mark,

I have a Honeywell thermostat, which I access via Alexa to perform basic
functions. Yes, I had to register with Honeywell and/or Total Connect Comfort
(TCC), but I don't recall the process being difficult. I've had this
thermostat for several years, and only recently discovered it could be accessed
via Alexa. The process of connecting Alexa to the device was easy as I recall.

The thermostat can be accessed via the TCC app, which is very accessible via
voiceover. When I first got the thermostat years ago, before I found out about
the app, JAWS had trouble accessing all features (e.g. programming the device),
so I relied on sighted help. However, JAWS had no problem at all with the
website when I tried a year or so ago. Rarely go to the website though as the
TCC app is great for programming, etc. And, again Alexa does a great job with
the basics like ID of indoor temperature, changing the temperature, etc.

2022-12-27 Thread Richard Turner
What device are you using to play the music?
We have Sonos, and I have home sharing enabled in iTunes, so my wife can access
my entire library through Sonos.
Now, No extra cost for family sharing involved.
Through iTunes home sharing, you can share your library over your network.
Now, if you want her to have the same access to all of Apple music that is not
part of your personal library from your CDs, and she is using her own Apple ID,
and you pay for Apple music family sharing, she will have the same access to
everything that you have. At least that is my understanding. Of course, always
check with Apple to be sure.

RE: Mark on Face ID via iPhone 14 with iOS 16.2: Not bad; not bad at all

2022-12-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Mark, I am not sure why Face Id on your iPhone 11 seemed unreliable, I
have an iPhone 11 and it works almost flawlessly and for me at least it works
better than Touch Id ever did and Touch Id for me also worked very well, but
Face Id especially now that masks are not typically required any more is
fantastic.

Subject: Mark on Face ID via iPhone 14 with iOS 16.2: Not bad; not bad at all

Hello Everyone,

I think it is fair to say that no one was a bigger critic of Face ID than I.

However, I must admit that using Face ID on iPhone 14 has been much, much
better than my experience than on iPhone 11.

I cannot articulate how or why this is so but there is definitely a difference
in how the systems feels between the two devices.

The funny thing is, two nights ago, when I went back to my beloved 8 Plus for a
few minutes to check on an app, I found myself wanting to use Face ID gestures
more than my beloved Touch ID. It took me more than a few minutes to figure
out why some of the gestures were not working on my beloved 8 Plus. When I
realized that Touch ID was the method of choice on the old phone I couldn't
stop laughing at how readily the brain can adapt to new techniques.

To those using Touch ID, I say keep doing so for as long as you can.
However I will add that on iPhone 14, at least, Face ID is not bad, not bad at
all. (smile).

Mark

RE: The New Apple TV

2022-12-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
For many people it won't really be an investment since USB-C is being adopted

Hello Patti,

I have not done any research on the latest model of the Apple TV but I suspect
that the difference in the size of the port, located on the bottom of the Siri
remote is because it is a USBC port and not a Lightening port.

Apple, slowly but surely is switching from Lightening to USBC because USBC is
more compatible on a global stage.

You will have to purchase a new cable in order to charge your new Siri remote.

While I applaud Apple's adoption of a more universal standard, given my,
already sizable investment in the Apple Orchard, switching from Lightening to
USBC will be a bit costly.

Fortunately for me, as I use an Android phone, I already own a few USBC
adaptors and cables.

As for how Apple packages the Apple TV? You are not missing anything. That is
just the way it is.

way not to be used with either Alexa or the internet? Or for example, does
the amazon one have a Braille overlay like the microwave does? Thanks

Yes, you can choose to pair the watch manually upon setup. You will have to
enter a code to begin pairing process.

I have the Nest thermostat that works with our echo devices. I don’t know the
model. We got it in 2016.

Hello

Afaik (November 2022) not. In addition i didn't manage to use the family
membership feature to setup the watch's mobile data.

I think but cannot verify that the watch will show some kind of code, QR
or so, to capture with phone's camera.
