Apple Watch Issues

2015-06-02 Thread Keith Watson
Hi,

I am experiencing an issue with my 38 mm Apple Watch. When I press the screen
to read the time it sometimes makes the click sound when waking but does not
speak the time.

Any of you who own a watch can you please let me know either way. And also
which size watch you bought? I have polled two 38 mm owners and a 42 mm owner
and it appears that only those of us who bought the 32 mm are experiencing the
issue. I would like a larger data set to provide to Apple.

Thanks,

Keith

Try Drafts out. You can create and append to Dropbox as well as many other
sites like FaceBook, Twitter and my favorite, OmniFocus.

Re: Experience with Nest Thermostat app accessibility

2013-07-17 Thread Keith Watson
Brad,

The app is free to install. I installed and played with it earlier this year.
It pretty much sucked. I contacted them about it and got quite a rude reply.
Essentially they told me that they had no plans to address accessibility. I
would suggest that you install the app and create an account to determine if
any changes have been made over the past few iterations and determine for
yourself.

Good Luck,

When I open the app, it tells me it cannot be downloaded at this time, and to

I am concerned about removing and reinstalling, as I will likely then have to

James,

Actually it's fully accessible and does exactly what it claims to do. The only
information it gives is the current temp and the high for the next five days.
It's a minimal app. No clutter. You want more info go use weather bug or some
other app that goes in depth. You want minimalist then Conditions is for you.

Re: Summary of Seeing Eye app presentation at CSUN

2013-03-02 Thread Keith Watson
See, that's where I differ from you. I do not and will not subscribe to such a
service. Paid services such as Serious, Pandora and other subscription based
services are, in my opinion, a waste of money. One of the reasons I chose
1password over Lastpass was because of this model. I own 1password and if I
choose not to upgrade in the future I have that right. Lastpass is subscription
based and unless I continue to pay them for the rest of my life I loose access
to the service. Same thing with this Sendero product. unless I pay them to
access their system or if they go out of business my investment is lost. No
thanks. I have not seen or heard anything about a APH solution but will surely
be looking at it over Sendero if it's a one off purchase with paid map updates.

Again, these are just my opinions and how I personally choose to spend my hard
earned cash. I would hope that common sense would prevail with Mr. may and they
rethink their position.

this is a bit steep, if it were $100 for 3 years I'd have not a huge problem

especially if they are going to listen to user feedback and improve the app.
Should that not happen, they may find themselves with a lot less customers
after the initial 3-year term. In a way an arrangement like that could be an
incentive for Sendero to keep it up.

Re: A couple of apps that are fully VO compliant

2013-03-02 Thread Keith Watson
Krister,

I agree, sort of. Yes the built in Calendar app is accessible. But no it does
not have a week view. It only has list, day and month. And when in month it
only tells you that you have something scheduled on a particular day, not what
is scheduled.

I like the VO Calendar app as I can get a lot of data about my week very
quickly. By just running my thumb down the screen I can hear all the
appointments that I have scheduled for that week. Do I not like the higher
price of the app? Sure I don't. Again it's one of these blind specific apps
that only have a niche with our kind. The reason I chose to buy this one was
because of the amount of time I will save with it. I consider it to be worth
the return on investment by the time it will save me not having to spend
working through the regular calendar app. Time is money after all.

Re: Summary of Seeing Eye app presentation at CSUN

2013-03-02 Thread Keith Watson
John,

Exactly. You bought a device, it had maps on it. You can now choose to upgrade
or not to upgrade those maps on the device when they become available. If you
do not choose to upgrade the device will continue to work the way it was sold
to you.

Now I buy a device, lets call it an iPhone. I then purchase an app called
Seeing Eye from a company called Sendero. I pay $100 for the app. time goes by.
Lets say for the sake of argument that its 3 years later. In the interim I have
lost my job, the stock market has crashed and the bank has taken my house back.
I have a job interview and want to use this app to find my way to it. I turn it
on and low and behold they want another $100 in order for me to use it. In
other words I have rented the app for 3 years and now its useless to me. To my
small mind this is not good business. I would go so far as to call it
extortion. If I am going to pay that high a price for something I damned well
want to own it.

I do not know what Garmon is going to do with map updates. Whether they are
going to be free or not is besides the point. I bought Navigon. It will work
the way it is until I get rid of the device, IOS changes so drasticallyy that
it no longer is supported or something else better comes along to replace it.
The choice is mine, not theirs.

Again, these are my opinions and my thoughts. I by no means condemn those of
you who have the money to waste on this type of business plan. I guess I am
just a bit more frugal than most.

Re: need an app to take notes

Hi,

$20 for a note taking app seems a bit excessive for my tastes. I use an app
named Notely for managing my text files in Dropbox. I also use TrunkNotes for
creating a personal wiki type document. I can easily create linked pages and
using mark down I can format my documents with headings, bold text or any other
type of formatting you can think of. It's a great app. And both of these app
together cost less than 5 buks.

Re: Seeking Information On Operating Small Jawbone Jambox

2013-01-01 Thread Keith Watson
Hi,

The 3 buttons on the top are as follows; the plus button is to increase the
volume, the minus button is to decrease the volume, and the circular button is
to check the status and answer calls if you are connected to a phone.

The slider switch on the side is power on and off as well as to put the unit
into pairing mode. You do this by sliding the switch all the way up and holding
it there until she tells you that she is in pairing mode.

The middle 3.5mm jack in the middle is to hook a source up directly if you
don't have or want to use bluetooth. And lastly the micro USB slot is for
charging the unit.

The other little box you were asking about is a USB wall wart. You plug the USB
cable into that and then can charge from a 120V wall outlet.

Basically once you are connected with a bluetooth device it acts as the
speaker. If you are connected to a phone via bluetooth you can mute the call by
pressing the plus and minus keys at the same time. You can hang up the call by
pushing the round button twice and redialing the last call the same way if not
connected to a call.

There is one other feature that I have figured out that I have no idea what
it's for. If you hold all three buttons down at the same time you will get some
sort of a sound check.

That's all I have been able to figure out so far. Hope that helps.

Keith

could get it to play something, and couldn't get it to produce any sound. I

If anybody can tell me what the buttons do, I would appreciate it. Also,
what is the small box with the large USB connector? Finally, Being that

Re: problem of actions taking focus

2012-10-26 Thread Keith Watson
Kevin,

No I am not having this issue. I understand that when I am in a list of
messages or emails that the rotor will automatically change to the Action
feature. I quite like this as I no longer have to fuss with the rotor and do
not have to go into the edit screen to delete messages. I quite like this
feature. I have noticed that if I have my rotor set to vertical navigation it
does not default to the Action item though. Pisses me off when this happens and
I am looking to quickly delete a few spam messages or whatever.

I guess it comes down to personal preference but I love this addition to the
rotor myself.

 I hate this.
If I wanted to choose actions I would choose it myself.
Actions is not something I can exclude from the rotar from within the

Re: Big Ben

Hi,

Ok since I see that it is actually a professional recording I have decided to
try it. I have been wanting an actual clock with chimes for a while now.

A couple of questions about the app though. I assume that you have to have it
launched in order for it to chime? I also am wondering if it works while
backgrounded. I ask because after I installed and launch I was expecting it to
chime on the hour while it was backgrounded and it didn't. Am waiting to see
what happens on the half hour. I will admit that after not chiming the hour I
turned on the 15 minute chime and it went off at the quarter hour as expected.

Re: Table Index in iOS 6 with Voiceover turned on

2012-10-02 Thread Keith Watson
Frank,

Actually you have to turn your rotor to Adjust Value, but yes I can force this
issue. I say that I can force this issue because when I go into contacts and
select the index my rotor automatically switches to adjust value. But if I turn
the rotor to another setting and then reselect the index it appears that the
rotor does not switch back to adjust value automatically. I will call this one
in as well. I don't know if you tried to change the rotor to headings and
navigate that way, but if you do you will soon see that it is FUBAR as well.

Re: Aluminum versus Glass iPHone, Just a Comment

2012-10-01 Thread Keith Watson
Mark,

I am just wondering if you actually feel this way or just wanted to start a
topic of conversation. In my opinion the 5 beats out the 4s hands down. Having
the phone just that little bit lighter is heaven! I really did not think that
it would make that much difference, but I was wrong. I will admit that I did
purchase a Ballistic case for it as I like to keep my stuff as pristine as
possible for the resale value. That said, if you do go naked I think that The
new type of glass strips at the top and bottom make a huge difference in how
slick the phone is while holding it.

As far as quality goes, I think that you are mistaken in your assessment. I
have help a S3 and quite frankly it feels like a plastic piece of crap that
would break the first time you dropped it. I think that having held the phone
for such a short time and noting the weight difference you may have come to the
conclusion that it felt cheaper. But after having used mine for the last 3 days
I would have to disagree. I think it feels just as well built as the 4S and
having the extra ram and boost in cpu was well worth stealing my daughters
upgrade!

Re: Verizon iPhone 5

2012-09-23 Thread Keith Watson
Hi,

The GSM frequencies used in the US version of the CDMA phones, i.e. Verizon and
Sprint, are for those outside the US. It's not a true Tri-band World phone. So
when you insert a micro sim for either ATT or T-Mobile you are only going to
run on their GSM networks and not the LTE network. The LTE radio in the Verizon
phone is for their network, not other networks. If you want more detailed
information about which chips are being used on which networks I suggest you
research them at the Qualcom site or other sites on the web that may have
already done the research. I am just suggesting that from what I have read and
heard on podcasts like Rob Walshes TII and others that this is the case, so
before you go and purchase a verizon phone to use on another network and expect
LTE speeds you better do your homework.

That is surprising since I just listened to the latest Today in iOS Podcast

version for Verizon and Sprint and a carrier in Japan and 2 different GSM
models, one for ATT, Rogers, Telus and Bell in North America and another
one for European, Australian and New Zealand and some Asian carriers.
Apparently the difference here is in the LTE and he said there will most
likely be another one or 2 iPhone 5 models for China.

I don't really understand the whole locking to a carrier thing anyways.
After all, if I for example buy a subsidized iPhone from Telus here in
Canada where I have to sign up for a 3-year contract to get the full
subsidy, why don't they just give me an unlocked phone and sign me up for a
3-year contract. Then if after a year I decide to go to ?Rogers they would
just say that I haven't fulfilled my contract and impose a stiff penalty
which means I most likely wouldn't do it and even if I did Telus would be
paid what I owe them for the phone. After all, I can break the contract now
and pay whatever penalty they impose and once I have done this and am off
the contract I can ask them for an official unlock.

 Sieghard

 Hi,

Apparently this is the case. Verizon is shipping it already unlocked and you
can use it on ATT's and T-Mobile networks. Here's the caveat though. When
you use it on the US carriers GSM networks you will only get HTSPA speeds.
No LTE. So buyer be ware.

App to compress mobile data

2012-09-05 Thread Keith Watson
Hi All,

There is a new app in the app store named Snappli that will do video and data
compression on the fly. What does this mean? So lets say you go to YouTube and
view a 1 meg video. Snappli will compress the incoming video stream to anywhere
between 600K and 800K. That's 20 to 40%. Why should you care? Well if you have
a data cap of 500 meg or 2 Gig then you can stream 20 to 40% more stuff before
reaching your data cap. And here's the best part. It's free!

And before you ask, no I don't have the iTunes url. Just search for S N A P P L
I in the app store.

Have fun

Re: Fleksy on Android devices

2012-08-22 Thread Keith Watson
Hi,

Quite frankly I will never switch off the platform. First, I have too much
invested in the apps that I own and second Apple is the first company to
include accessibility into their operating systems at no extra charge. I pay
what a sighted person pays and because of this they have a loyal customer here.

Fleksy is a nice method of input and I hope that if Apple approaches you with

Re: Fleksy on Android devices

2012-08-22 Thread Keith Watson
This has probably been answered, but I thought I would throw my 2 cents in here
anyway.

There is such ambiguity between phone manufactures, carriers and google that
programmers are forced to alter their code for each version of the operating
system they plan on supporting. Not only each version of the OS but each tree
within that version. For instance, look at Ice cream sandwich. HTC, Motorola,
Samsung and god knows who else all alter the base code for their particular
hardware. This means that no version of Ice cream sandwich is the same as what
Google released. App developers don't like to work within these types of
boundaries. It's much easier to write apps for IOS as no matter what version of
the phone you own the base operating system is the same.

Just saying'.

Re: reading long texts

2012-07-31 Thread Keith Watson
Like twitter the carriers have put a limit to the number of characters that one
can send via text message. If you exceed this limit then the message gets split
into multiple messages.

entirely by setting your rotor to words and flicking down through it?
You may need to test that or examine what you are doing to read the
message. Can you specifically list the steps you are doing to read the
message from the point you are aware there is a message to what you do
to read it and what happens? Such as, do you open the messages app and
then find the messae thread in the list and double tap that and then
find the most recent message going up from the bottom of the screen
and single tap that message or flick to it? Thankfully this has not
been a known issue and so you may be doing something different or not
quite the way you need to?

Re: Refreash-a-Braille Connection Problem

2012-07-21 Thread Keith Watson
After plugging it in and removing it a few times I have found that it has
become a bit easier to manage. I figured out that once you get it into the
slot, using my finger nail works to get it seated just that last little bit.
Same goes for disconnecting it. I just use my finger nail to pull it out a bit
and then remove it the rest of the way with the cord.

I have also tried to use other cables and they pretty much work the same way.

that you can rap tape to the usb cable. THis would provide a firmer section

I believe there is a solution, but it would take resources to implement.

I can't say for sure that this will not work. But it is my opinion that the
file structures are different and changing the filename will have no effect
when attempting to import into the respective application. I will give your

Re: OT: Why Did Apple Create VoiceOver?

2012-06-24 Thread Keith Watson
Hi,

If you go back and read any of the Jobs biographies or watch any of the movies
I believe that you will see that although he could be an asshole, Jobs was a
visionary. His ideology was the driving force behind total control of the
products that Apple created. Universal access was only a part of that ideology.
Is there a particular document that exists explaining why they included TTS in

the purchase, but the screen will show you a mis-formatted string of numbers
 rather than this price.

Please rest assured that only $1.99 is charged if you wish to make the
purchase. I'd ask that folks help spread the word about this formatting
glitch if and when people mention it. Also, know that you may continue to
use the app for free if you are simply reading your newsfeed and related
 comments.

I hope to have the Hardware issue resolved and the app updated soon. After
these fixes, I've got some desired new functionality coming down the pick.
Please visit www.activeinfosys.com to view the product roadmap.

 Thanks for your support!
 Ben

Re: Voicebook VO Notice

2012-06-24 Thread Keith Watson
Anthony,

It's one app. There is not a free version and a paid version. It's fully
functional for 30 days and then you have to pay $1.99 to continue to use the
functions. Quite frankly I think this is against Apple policy and I will be
asking them about this. Here in the states we have laws against bait and switch
schemes. Had he offered a totally free version with limited functionality and a
fully functional paid version I would not have a problem and would actually
have bypassed the free version and purchased the paid version right off. I
think that this is sneaky and underhanded behavior and will not support it, no
matter how good or helpful the app is.

Re: Voicebook VO Notice

2012-06-24 Thread Keith Watson
Hi,

Nowhere in the description on the app store did he indicate that there was
limited functionality with in app purchases to enable additional functionality.
It is my own policy not to use apps that adhere to this model. Personally I
think it's a form of extortion and I don't play in that sandbox. Set a price
for full functionality up front and let me decide if I am willing to pay that
price. That is my point.

Now on to your point. I reviewed the description in the app store when I
purchased the app. Nowhere did it indicate that I was going to eventually have
to pay something for what I was downloading. Now after 30 days he posts to this
list that this would be happening, and the only reason he posted was because
there was a bug in the app that didn't give you the correct price. Had there
not been a bug I would have attempted to post something and then been prompted
with a popup saying that this functionality no longer worked and if I wanted to
use this functionality I would have to pay $1.99 for it. In my book this is
extortion. Granted you are thinking that I am a dick and it's only 2 dollars so
shut the hell up. But like I said before, had he charged me 2 dollars up front
I would not be offended, insulted and disgusted. I think that our society has
left principles behind, but I am old enough to have been raised by a generation
that valued them and I intend to hold to mine. You and everyone do what you
feel you must, me I deleted the app and am informing Apple of this behavior. If
it meets there criteria then so be it. Don't think for a second that I would
not and have not done this to other developers. If not for our voices then how
can they know when there is a problem.

Ben, should you decide to make a limited free version and a paid full featured
version available on the app store I would be glad to purchase it. I really do
like the app and wish you well.

Re: Voicebook VO Notice

2012-06-24 Thread Keith Watson
Mike,

Again, apparently you don't read very well. As I said in my previous posts had
he placed the price at $1.99 or $4.99 up front I would probably have bought it.
If he puts a free limited version and a paid full version in the store I would
buy the paid version. Your assumption that I am bitching about it costing money
is totally and utterly off base. Before you go throwing the blind card I
suggest that you digest what the person is attempting to impart. I have and
will continue to support apps that are created for our community. Your
assertion that I am one of those blinds who believe that everything for blind
consumption should be handed to us without cost is incorrect and quite frankly
offensive. My intent in voicing my opinion this morning was to indicate to Ben
that I think he made a mistake in the way he implemented his pricing model and
maybe that he should possibly rethink it, not to get into a pissing match with
you or anyone else.

Nuff said!

My guess is if it would have been $1.99 up front you would have complained

 demanded a refund.

Some time you can not make everyone happy. I leanred that while working and

 Hi,

Nowhere in the description on the app store did he indicate that there
was limited functionality with in app purchases to enable additional
functionality. It is my own policy not to use apps that adhere to this
model. Personally I think it's a form of extortion and I don't play in that
sandbox. Set a price for full functionality up front and let me decide if I
am willing to pay that price. That is my point.

Now on to your point. I reviewed the description in the app store when I
purchased the app. Nowhere did it indicate that I was going to eventually
have to pay something for what I was downloading. Now after 30 days he posts
to this list that this would be happening, and the only reason he posted was
because there was a bug in the app that didn't give you the correct price.
Had there not been a bug I would have attempted to post something and then
been prompted with a popup saying that this functionality no longer worked
and if I wanted to use this functionality I would have to pay $1.99 for it.
In my book this is extortion. Granted you are thinking that I am a dick and
it's only 2 dollars so shut the hell up. But like I said before, had he
charged me 2 dollars up front I would not be offended, insulted and
disgusted. I think that our society has left principles behind, but I am old
enough to have been raised by a generation that valued them and I intend to
hold to mine. You and everyone do what you feel you must, me I deleted the
app and am informing Apple of this behavior. If it meets there criteria then
so be it. Don't think for a second that I would not and have not done this
to other developers. If not for our voices then how can they know when there
 is a problem.

Ben, should you decide to make a limited free version and a paid full
featured version available on the app store I would be glad to purchase it.
I really do like the app and wish you well.

 Hi there.
Hold on, slow down, and take a deep breath. This app does have limited

It states this quite clearly in the email Ben sent to the list. It says
that you can read but not post. This is clearly you're limited
functionality. Also, you are not being forced to pay any money if you just
want to read posts. The only reason you pay is to post and comment.
Once again, I urge you to read the email carefully, and you'll see what

Hi,

If you are setting up your gmail account through the default gmail service on
the iPhone I would suggest that you change to other and set it up as imap. Or
you can use the Exchange option to connect. I switched from imap to Exchange as
soon as they offered it and have had no issues since.

Directions and Bus Route Information App

2012-06-08 Thread Keith Watson
Hi all,

I was listening to iPad Today and came across an app called Hop Stop. It's
mostly accessible and very useable. So far I have played with it enough to get
walking directions from my house to the grocery store up the street and
walking/bus directions from my house to work. I haven't played with it more
than that, but it does a good job for what it is. There are no GPS functions in
the app. It's strictly informational. And best of all it's FREE.

Enjoy,

Keith

Re: Status Item

It's called trickle charging and it does not quite meet the threshold that
trips the status bar icon.

 Hi Kerry,

I'm pretty sure an iPad can't charge off a computer, or if it does, it

 this doesn't work well.

 Best,

 Thanks Kerry

Re: ping

All depends on your needs. I would suggest turning it off as a lot of hackers
will ping blocks of ip's to get a base for starting port scans. Mines off.
