Re: Alexa iPhone app broken

2024-01-17 Thread Paul Henrichsen
I have an ecobee thermostat, and Alexa is working just fine for me. Ecobee can
either use HomeKit, or there are two Alexa skills that you can load for that
particular thermostat.

RE: Pro vs Max

2023-09-23 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Chiming in here, I had the 14 pro. I guess it depends on how much you use the
phone. But I normally got two days out of each charge. But if you listen to
music a lot or use GPS, it can drop your battery pretty quickly. I'm playing
with a program called transcriptionist which can transcribe audio like a
podcast into a txt file. And it is a battery hog.

I tend to use my iPad mini for listening to podcasts at home.

Hi Kelly,

Like Robert stated, the larger models get much, much better battery life.

Before purchasing my beloved 14 Pro Max, I always carried a charging cable with
me, when out for a day. With the Pro Max, I never, ever worry about running
out of power in a day, even when using GPS navigation for hours at a time. The
phone is amazing.

I would think that the battery on the Plus models would be as good as the Pro
Max but cannot personally confirm this as I do not own a Plus model.

I realize you asked about the 15.

I had to update in February as my 11 pro couldnt hold out nine months!

I opted for the 14 pro max though a larger screen then the pro.

I am so glad i did as i get 14-16 hours on one charge!

This is texting mail constantly whatsapping facebook phone calling and using my

Hope this helps!

Your new TV will probably have the ability to download an Apple TV app. If that

Re: need help getting aple tv up and running

2018-11-10 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Hi. It’s the top button on the left that you want to hit. Not the top of the
remote. Do you want to tap that top button on the left three times in that will
bring up the menu where you can turn on voiceover and also audio description. I
assume this is the newer AppleTV. Usually, it will ask you to put your iPhone
near the Apple TV, so that I can get all of the information from your iPhone
and help you do the set up. The other problem is switching the input on the TV
remote. You want to make sure you’re on the right input with the Apple TV is.
You might try pressing it and then flicking your finger across the trackpad on
the top to see if the Apple TV makes any noise to let you know that you were on
the right input. I’m assuming you press the top button on the right on the
Apple TV control to turn the Apple TV on. So the top right button on the Apple
TV is on and off. It’s just above the volume up and down button. Hope this
helps.

One of my favorite programs for remembering passwords is one password. Also,
when you go to a web site, you will be asked if you want to save your password

have revolutionized mobile computer input for most everyone, but there’s
 one
sector of the population that isn’t exactly feeling the pinch, the tap, or
the swipe: the blind, Christina Bonnington reports for Wired. It’s
 nearly
impossible to interact with elements on a totally smooth screen if you can’t
 see.

 iBrailler Notes

vision-impaired iPad users an easy way to type Braille notes and perform
basic word processing on a touchscreen, Bonnington reports. iBrailler

Every time you lift and readjust your hands on the screen, the keyboard
 does
too. The keyboard uses Braille English Grade 1, Grade 2, and Six-Dot

Subject: The ScanJig

OK, I now have seen what I consider the Cadillac of stands.

I got the ScanJig at work Monday. I used KNFB Reader to scan the setup
instructions, free-hand, and was able to figure out the pieces and put it
together.
I enjoy puzzles, so it was fun putting it together. It didn't take more than
about 5 or 10 minutes to figure it out without sighted help.
There are pictures of the pieces, so a sighted person could probably do it in 2.

The ScanJig costs $30.00.
It is made from hard plastic. It is a bit thicker than the other stands but it
looks way more durable.
It folds up into a box 13 by 9 and 1.5 inches thick.
The beauty of the ScanJig is that it can hold anything from a smart phone to a
tablet.
It holds both the document and the device at an angle so there is less
likelihood of casting a shadow over the document and it can capture the maximum
of the room light or use the flash. There are no lights needed on the device
itself.

There is a movable Device Holder that snaps into one of four slots at various
distances from the Document Shelf. On the Device Holder, is a little shelf
that snaps in to hold the phone or tablet. There are 10 adjustment holes so
you can get the optimum height of the device pointing at the document.
I found with both the iPhone 5s and the 6, that the first slot, which is 11.5
inches from the document was the best position. I also found that if I put the
shelf on the device holder in the second hole from the top, I can get the
entire document even if it has narrow margins.
There are some stick on pieces to help hold your device in place once you get
the position where you want it.
There are also two clips that can hold a document on the document shelf, for
example, a tri-fold letter that wants to curl, you can clip it in place so it
holds it steady.

It is definitely more bulky when folded up than either the Giraffe Reader or
the StandScan, but the fact that it will also hold a tablet from a full iPad to
an iPad Mini or any smart phone I think gives it a big edge. Not to mention it
is made out of much stronger material and at a great price.

I'm going to paste the setup instructions below and also the link to their web
site.

www.scanjig.comhttp://www.scanjig.com

Note: I added the focal distances to the setup instructions below.

ScanJig Set-up Instructions

Product Description:
The ScanJig is designed for easy tactile positioning of both a
smart device and documents for correct focus, alignment and field of view.
Once set up - the stand holds smart phones or tablets in a vertical
portrait orientation and at an angle where the device's touch screen interface
is facing the user. The stand can also hold a document, in the same vertical
portrait orientation, and angle, directly behind the smart phone or tablet.
The device holder can be adjusted to position your device's rear
lens to point directly at the center of the document.
Once the device is positioned in the optimum location, stops can be
applied to lock in this position. Then your phone or tablet can easily be
placed in the same spot for each use.
The product's open design takes advantage of ambient light and
helps avoid shadows. Further the device flash is completely unobstructed if
this feature is needed.

What is stored inside the ScanJig
* 1 - Smart Device Holder and Device Shelf - the device will sit on
the shelf.
* 2 - Document Clips - to better hold creased documents or small
items.
* 4 - Peal and Stick Device Stops - after your mobile device is
positioned the stops help hold it in place and provide an easy way to quickly
use the same position again.
* 2 - Thin peal and stick spacers - if needed, these can be placed
under your device for fine adjustment.

Initial Set-Up

1 Lift up on the latch at the front end of the ScanJig and open the cover all
the way until it stops. The inside of the cover is the Document Bed with a
shelf on the bottom and a fence on the right. Place a document on the shelf
and against the fence.

2 Positioning your device camera for a full screen view of the document.

This initial set-up is done once, the optimum device position is
then preserved by applying the peal and stick stops for subsequent uses.

Re: my Braille Sense on hand unpaired or something

2014-11-16 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Another thing to do is to find the braille display under your voiceover menu.
There will be a more info button. Double tap on that and double tap on forget
this item.
Then start the pairing process again as you did the first time when you got the
unit.
I had to do this with my U2 as it wouldn’t pair until I had the phone forget
the device so I could start over again.

At the bottom, find your braille display among the available devices,
probably the active one, and double-tap it. Hopefully you will get the
chance to enter the pin code, , on both devices. If that fails, reset
the OnHand, turn the phone off and on again or use the
 power-button-five-times trick, and try again.

Re: deleting files from over cast

2014-08-18 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Hi. You can tap and hold on the episode the move your finger to the left. It
will then say delete.
However, I find this rather problematic. Many times, it just starts playing the
episode again.
It takes me a few times to get the delete button to pop up.
I hope he adds a downward or upward flick to delete in a later version.
This would certainly make it easier.
But, it's now my go to podcast app.

Re: How to Navigate the Mail app on an iPad with a Bluetooth Keyboard

2014-08-04 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Hi, Tom. Just took a look at this. Unfortunately, pressing escape will close
the mail app.
One thing you could do is to use the arrow keys. Press the right and left arrow
to turn quick nav on or off. It's a toggle. You can then use right and left
arrows to move around the screen. Using left arrow will eventually get you to
the back button. Pressing up and down arrow together will click the back
button. You can use control up or down arrow to quickly move to the top or
bottom of the screen.
Not sure if she can do that. So, control up would quickly get you to the back
button where you could then press up and down arrow simultaneously to click the
back button.
Hope this helps.

etc. With mail, it will read the first couple of lines before one may want to
open it. The app is compatible for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod. I also poked
around accessibility under General in settings to see if there was a method to

I was wondering about Shelluy's book, but she covers everything; not just
voiceover; so not sure how much voiceover she covers.

She is a visually-impaired iPhone and iPad user, who uses VoiceOver
extensively. Covers VoiceOver speech and braille. The book is available
in epub and pdf, at $20. And it is comprehensive: with appendices
detailing the VO gestures. Also covers other disabilities and their featured
 requirements.

Just purchased an iPad, never used an apple product before. What other
books can I read to learn how to use this device, especially the
VoiceOver gestures, other than the book getting started with the iPhone
from the national Braille press. Thank you. Michelle

I did find a talk button under the chat tab, but the only time one could even

2014-08-04 Thread Paul Henrichsen
If it is a gmail group as mac visionaries is, you should just get all messages.
Of course, they will all appear in your inbox unless you have set up a folder
called a label and a filter which tells gmail to move all messages from the mac
visionaries list to a particular folder.
You do this from the gmail web site.
That's the way it works in my account.
Each of my lists such as this one go into a particular folder.
I have to tap on that folder on my iphone so it will then go get the messages.

Subject: Dish Network users who also use the app?

Hi there,

I realize some of this may be off topic for this list, so that's why I'm asking
that folks reply to me off list so we don't bombard the lists.

I'm looking to talk to folks who not only use the Dish Anywhere app but who
also use the actual Hopper and remote control. I've had Dish for a little over
a month now and can use it very basically but have questions. Whenever I call
Dish, I always get folks who can't fathom the fact that a blind person is
asking questions about either its app or its remote and have no idea how to
best answer me.
So, if anyone is a Dish Network subscriber and user of both the app and the
remote, please contact me off list.
Thanks.
Jim

Here is the procedure to follow to activate XM content with Radium, iPhone
 version was used.
 1. Launch Radium and choose More Options.

 2. Swipe right until you hear Subscriptions, one finger double tap to
 activate that option..

 3. Swipe until you hear XM U.S unless you are in Canada, if so, stop at XM
 Canada.

By default, either service will be disabled.

 4. Single Finger double tap to enable the service.

 5. Fill in your User Name and Password and choose to save what you have
 typed.

 6. Back in the Main Screen, in the search box, you can search for XM and
choose Search and you'll get a list of all XM content.

 7. Single Finger Double Tap on the station you desire and the stream will
 start.

Notes: I have not experienced a crash yet. I am running Mountain Lion on
 the Mac side.

Re: Tim Cook Being Sued over Automatic iOS 7 Updates

2013-10-20 Thread Paul Henrichsen
If you read the agreement, you will notice that you agree that apple can
download updates to your phone whenever they need to.
And why is it you don't seem to mind microsoft downloading updates to your
computer whether you want them or not?
Isn't that a double standard?
How many of you didn't ask for internet explorer nine or ten, but got it anyway?
It amazes me the people who have nothing else in their lives to do other than
to whine about something they agreed to.
Thank goodness you don'w own an android and have the youtube app. In the
agreement, you agree that they can turn on your camera or microphone any time
they wish without your permission or consent.
Perhaps instead of pressing the agree button, you should actually read the
agreement.
After all, why would anyone want the new voiceover features in IOS 7 anyway?

What could happen to you, if you place a car in the Bill gates parking lot,

For sure he will take legal actions against you. In the laws of United

What apple is doing, is using the resources of our devices, downloading
bunches of data, storing it in the memory of our devices, without our
agreement. No body can use your property without your agreement. More over,
is no way to remove the data that apple stored in our devices, unless we
 install the operated system.
Try to place a car in the Bill Gate parking lot, and keep it there until Bill
Gates buy your car. Tell Bill Gates that you will not remove your car of his
parking lot, until he pay you for that car, and tell me what happen.
The law should be apply for every body, not just with the people who is not
rich. The law is also for the people who is braking rights, not matter if
they are apple, Bill Gates or Chris.
So, the problem here is not if our iDevices are of 8 or 64Gb. The point here
is that apple is violating a right of property, and not providing a solution
for the people who doesn't want to install IOs what ever version they
release. When I say it, I mean, not providing a way to remove the data stored
 in the iDevices.

Hope this goes well, but I still believe in the notion that one is not
actually forced into the update; they are just forced to have it
downloaded to their device and take, to some, a considerable amount of
space on their device. I can understand this being an issue for 8 GB and
16 GB devices, but for the rest of you, deal with it and maybe you will
install it in your own time. Remember, the update is only downloaded,
not installed, to one's device, since one have to agree to the terms of
conditions not once, but twice. If the update got installed
automatically, then yes I would support the man suing Tim Cook. But not
 sure on this case.

It will be very interesting to see where this goes.

I can't say this works every time for me. If I tap and hold near the bottom of
the screen, that's just where my messages app is in the doc. Its just above the
home button with no spaced below it.
I did get it to work once, but spent the next three minutes with no success.

 Hi Paul,
You don't actually tap and hold. You slowly slide your finger up
 from
 the
home button until you hear the same sound you would normally hear when
you double tap and hold. At that point, slide one finger straight up.
 I

Hi, John. As noted in another message, my messages app is just above the home

still be faster to just touch the top of the screen and then do the three

The problem as I see it is this method isn't reliable enough to get 100 percent
accuracy.

I didn't see any upgrade buttons after each building, which I thought was odd.
I was just trying to upgrade the tavern as a start, but never could upgrade
past level two and i have no idea how I did that.
I know i have the resources, a it shows what I need for level three, for

Is it possible that some buttons are not vo accessible?
Thanks.

lumberjack.) You cannot upgrade from within the buildings themselves.
These buttons will be grayed-out (say dimmed after the button name)
if you do not have enough resources to upgrade that item.

Looking for brilliant commands for the iPhone

2013-08-01 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Hi. Is there a list of commands for using the brailliant bi 32 with the iPhone?
I'm wondering if the function keys one through six do anything special or if
there is an easier way to switch between pages other than the O or OW chord.
Thanks.

Re: All Access

2013-06-09 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Hi, all. I am having the same problem with all access. None of the restaurants
in my area (Fresno, CA) have menus and the one chain, Red Robin, just takes me
to a web site.
Sadly, I found the app useless and deleted it from my phone.
I had really hoped this would have lots of menus at least for chain restaurants
in my area, but sadly, no.

Sadly, this is not improved for me. Even though I have specifically put in my

area on the last release, although not all the ones I know exist.

Perhaps I'll just have to give this a miss for a while and see how things

The documents show up in your Docs library, so they'll be displayed
if the screen heading is All Items or Docs on your Kindle home
page. You can switch libraries by double tapping the button for the
library, which is the first item on your library screen -- at the top
center of the screen, just below the time on the status menu bar. If
you add documents, or if you decide to use the Newsstand to
subscribe to magazines or journals, you'll probably find it more
convenient to navigate to separate libraries on your device, instead
of having everything mixed together. Either touch the button for your
library in the heading area at the top center of the screen, or
navigate there with a four finger tap in the top half of the screen,
and then double tap. On the Libraries screen you can flick through
the list (All Items, Books, Newsstand, or Docs) and double tap
to select. You can also use the search option from this screen to
find books or documents. When I tested sending documents for the first
time, I switched my selected library to Docs. The top of the Docs
library screen also lists your personal Kindle email address
associated with this device at the top of the screen. VoiceOver says
send documents to user id AT kindle.com. If you want to force the
screen to refresh, you can do a double tap and hold on the email
address and then, without lifting your finger from the screen, pull
vertically down, and then release. You'll hear VoiceOver say sync
finished. However, I didn't need to force the sync in order to find
 the document I emailed.

I didn't try any fancy browser or program add-ons when sending the
trial documents. I just created an email with an attached document in
the normal way (e.g., on a Mac you can either just do a Command-C to
copy a file in Finder, and a Command-V to paste it into an email, or
you can select one or multiple files, and then use a service menu
option to create a New email with selection. I just typed in the
email address, especially since I wanted to make sure that both the
regular email and the variant using free.kindle.com instead of
kindle.com would work. I started with short files of the different
listed valid file types, since I wanted to check how these worked

Can anyone point to an app with the Book of Mormon that is not heavy on

Problems with I like to read pro

2012-07-29 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Hi guys.
I'm having real problems with I like to read pro.
I can't get it to show anything in the dropbox folder.
I've put three html files, a text file, and a pdf file into the folder that
the program sets up.
However, when I open the app and go to the dropbox folder, the list shows as
empty.
Has anyone gotten the dropbox feature to work at all?
I'm starting to get the feeling that I've been ripped off buying this app for
$5.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

 Hi all,
 Just an FYI,
I use my thumbs like those kids who are always texting, with Fleksy. I let
the iPhone rest on my fingers and type with a thumb on each side of the
 key board.
I can type almost as fast as I can on my pc, although, I should say that I
suck at typing. I can even type while I am walking.

This app really works well, and i am getting very fast at selecting the
proper words and puncuation. Manual input is still slow, but getting better.

Re: Dish receivers 922, 722 and hopper/joey and streaming with i devices

2012-07-05 Thread Paul Henrichsen
I used to have a 922 and a 612. I was very disappointed to see the watch on tv
feature disappear with the hopper.
Sure wish we could get them to put it back.
If I had known that the watch on tv feature was not available on the hopper, I
probably wouldn't have switched.

 Hi.

I currently have the Hopper along with 2 Joeys. I also have a SlingBox
adapter plugged into one of the USB ports on the Hopper. You can get the
 adapter for $30 from Dish.

My experience with streaming has been ok for the most part. If you get the
free Dish app for your iDevice, you can stream stuff on your DVR or watch
live TV. Unfortunately, the part of the app that actually displays the video
on your device has a bunch of unlabeled buttons so you really have to poke
around to figure some of them out.

The one big issue I have with this is that if you have a Hopper, the “watch
on TV” option is no longer available. This option allows you to find
something in the program guide and when you click on watch you can choose to
watch it on your tv and not stream so it’s sort of like an accessible remote
control allowing you to have it change the channel on your DVR to watch real
 time.

This feature is there if you own a 722k or 922. Not sure why they decided to
not make it available with the Hopper. I have spoken to them and also
emailed them with no real responses so not sure if it will ever be added back
 again for the Hoppers.

The Hopper has 3 tuners but it has the Prime Time Any Time feature.
This feature when enabled, uses 1 tuner and automatically records all 4
major networks between 7pm and 11pm. It’s a fantastic feature. The DVR
itself of course isn’t accessible but you do have the ability to view the
program guide through the app where you can schedule recordings along with
the ability to stream previous recordings. Again, it’s stream only which
isn’t the case with the 722 and 922, or so owners of those boxes have told me.

 Hope this helps somewhat.

Feel free to contact me off list if you have any more questions or we can do
Skype as well if you want.

 Best,

 Rick Alfaro

Subject: Dish receivers 922, 722 and hopper/joey and streaming with i devices

 Hello list,

So, I’m a Dish subscriber and have the opportunity to upgrade to any of the
above receivers for free. I recall reading on here that some other dish users
had issues with the Hopper receivers and streaming to their iPhones/iPads.

I currently have two dvrs for four tbs and my understanding is that with the
Hopper, you can have up to six tvs hooked up where as with the other 922 and
722 boxes, it’s only two tv connections with only the 922 receiver having
 slingbox capabilities.

Can anyone speak as to the accessibility with any of these receivers and
streaming to an iPad or iPhone or exicuting any of the dvr recording features
 online and so on?

I don’t have an Apple TV, but will most likely be getting one later in the
 year.

I would be upgrading from a couple of 625 receivers one of which is mine. I
was thinking about buying a netgear usb adaptor to insert into the receiver
that I own to catch my wireless router, but I’ve read conflicting reports
 online that this particular dvr
device is not Internet capable outside of being hooked up directly to a
landline which I do not have.

I would appreciate any feedback or observations on any of the above. If I do
decide to upgrade and sign on for two more years, I’d like to get the right
 receiver.

 Thanks,

Accessible checkbook program and iPhone app

2012-05-22 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Hi. I'm not sure if this has been mentioned on this list before and i invite
you to crosspost this to any other lists you might think appropriate.
The clearcheckbook web site and iPhone app is very accessible. You can enter
transactions and can even see a running balance if you have their premium
service for $42 per year.
There are lots of options including setting recurring transactions and
reminders and running reports.
This is quite a nice program for those of us who need an accessible checkbook
program and the iPhone app just makes it better.
