On my 11, the Wal-Mart guy could not get facial ID to work. I took it outside
on west side of the building on a sunny afternoon and got it going myself. So,
when I got my 14 Pro, I just sat here in the house and did it. I am totally
blind, so felt fortunate to have managed to do it.

Re: A Proglem Unique to Blind People

2023-08-01 Thread CHELA Robles
I am totally blind myself, but I turned off the attention awareness thing, so I didn’t quite understand what that meant and what that did and I read much earlier before this thread when I first got this iPhone 14 when I had questions a long time ago on this list I think Richard or somebody I don’t know who responded directly to me or right away within like five minutes of my sending my message about Face ID in the first place they told me to turn off the attention awareness feature which I did, and I haven’t had any issues since then the only times I’ve had issues is if I’m laying in bed a And I’m not looking directly at the phone or once in a while I’ll have to get it on the second attempt when I’m sitting up or standing when I’m opening my patelco mobile app which has some unlabeled buttons but I’m trying to work with them on that as far as accessibility goes lol but anyway all that being said, I get it usually in the second attempt, but when I set up the Face ID for the first time, I did not know what I was doing so I ended up getting one of those stands that hold the phone in place  Your kind of like a tripod kind of deal that was magnetic friendly and then I just looked straight into the phone that way with my glasses and without my glasses so I could capture my face that way. Only took roughly 3 to 5 minutes to figure that out when I first set it up going from an iPhone 8 plus to an iPhone 14 was definitely a little learning curve but I figured it out , and if I can figure it out, I’m sure you can figure it out. RE: A Proglem Unique to Blind People

2023-08-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, Richard made an excellent point, turning off attention makes it easier by
a lot.
I could do it fine with attention on except for at night. I lost my sight in an
accident so both my eyes are prosthetic and I prefer to not have them in a t
night and it simply won't work at all in this case just as it wouldn't work if
attention is on and you had your eyes closed or mostly closed.

Check in settings Face ID and Passcode that the setting under the Attention
heading says:

Require Attention for Face ID, off

If that is on, you have to be looking at the phone in a precise way. It is more
flexible when it is off.
Even then, sometimes it still doesn't work, but those are the minority.

I hate to admit this, but if I can’t ask fellow blind folks, then what is the
point of a list like this? I have never mastered the use of facial recognition.
I was able to follow the directions given to set up face ID fine. The problem I

RE: A Proglem Unique to Blind People

2023-08-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
In turn I hate to say this since I don't want to make you or anybody feel bad,
but I never had any issue gretting Face I dto recognize me once set up. Do I
sometimes get the message that it didn't work and to try again, yes,
absolutely, but it's literally happening maybe once in 20 uses if that. I
sometimes wake up at night lying on my side and I grab my iPhone to check the
time or whatever and I just swipe up, sort of turn my head to glance in the
direction of the phone and it just works for me.
The one thing which I find I can do to make it not work consistently is to hold
the phone too close to my face, but by too close I mean literally 4 or 6 inches
away, I find anything 10 inches or more up to as far as you can stretch your
arm and still comfortably hold your phone works fine.
My recommendation would be to maybe get a sighted person to observe you as you
try to unlock with Face Id to see if you somehow hold the phone on an angle
where it is not pointing towards your face.

Re: A Proglem Unique to Blind People

2023-08-01 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Sandy, I expect the majority of problems using Face ID in our community have to do with incorrect distance between phone and face. I find that Face ID works most consistently with this distance: I sit in an easy chair such as a recliner. With the bottom of my phone lined up with my belly button and the screen pointed at my face, this seems to be an excellent distance for Face ID to work on apps where it is activated such as financial apps. I assume that would also be a good distance when setting it up. I encourage you to prevail with Face ID because when working properly, it is much more convenient than typing in a passcode or in Touch ID. Good luck. Alan Lemly Sent from my iPhoneOn Aug 1, 2023, at 6:01 AM, Sandra Finley wrote:I hate to admit this, but if I can’t ask fellow blind folks, then what is the point of a list like this? down, left and right.

When I have trouble getting it to work I slowly move the phone around, keeping
it facing me and usually hit the right spot.

2023-08-01 Thread Jennie Facer
Hi all,

Here is how I do it. It may sound a little bit different than what others have
said.

I started by holding the phone right up to and touching my face. i had the
middle of it right on my face. I then slowly backed the phone away and it then
unlocked after a while. Now I hold it so that my elbow is barely bent and the
phone is up toward my face still. I also hold the phone in portrait mode.

Hope this helps a little bit.

Re: A Proglem Unique to Blind People

2023-08-01 Thread Mária Orovčíková
I know this is not the best advice, but just thought to say that I
learned by practice, trials and errors.

I must admit I am weird at figuring out measurement units. In Slovakia
we use metric system like meters, centimeters etc, , so feet, inches and
other units that you use in the U.S. and other countries is confusing
for me.

Fortunately, there is a way to convert the units quickly by asking our
smart devices.

However, if someone tells me 1 ft or 30 cm, I can't picture it in my
head, so it took me long time to figure out how Face ID works when
someone described it to me.

It was frustrating when I tried to unlock my phone using face ID with
ten unsuccessful attempts, so I gave up and used the passcode instead,
but the more I practiced the less unsuccessful attempts I had with Face
ID and now I can use it fine.

Yes, sometimes I don't unlock my phone and had to try again, but at
least it doesn't take me 10 attempts any more.

So give it time and patience and you'll learn it.

Maria

I hate to admit this, but if I can’t ask fellow blind folks, then what
is the point of a list like this? I have never mastered the use of
facial recognition. I was able to follow the directions given to set
up face ID fine. The problem I continue to have  is how to hold my
phone up to my face  so that my fade is recognized. Several months ato
I just stopped trying and have been using my password  instead, but I
am  now determined to figure this out.  How did some of you  learn how
to do this?

RE: A Proglem Unique to Blind People

2023-08-01 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I struggled with this on my personal iPhone 11. For my part, I was holding the
phone too close to my face. I now hold it about 18 inches from my face, and it
works almost all of the time. I’d try varying the distances a bit to see if you
can find that sweet spot.

On the iPhone 12 I got from my employer though, I still haven’t found the
trick. I’ve pretty much just resorted to typing in my pin each time. I’ve reset
face ID and set up multiple faces, but it still doesn’t work for me! Not sure
what I’m doing differently, but I’m sure it’s a user thing.

Thinking about this, the best way I can describe it is to say hold your phone
in your hand or hands, about foot in front of your face, with your elbows close
to your sides, and your hands about shoulder height. The phone should be angled
Toward you, not necessarily straight up and down. Try doing the capture like
that and see what happens.
