Re: An important suggestion for anyone contemplating buying the StandScan Pro!

2013-03-15 Thread Sandratomkins
Hi,

While I saw a brief description of the 12 volt battery case, on the
StandScan site, neither I or my partner (a veteran online shopper!) can find it
to buy. Perhaps, this explains why I never received it with my order.

Now, just a suggestion, I am sure, as has been mentioned here, it will be
possible to use other types of back-up power to bring the brightness up to 12
volts. I, for example, have my trusty Turbo Charger for my iPhone 4s. However,
that charger, which comes complete with different connectors, does not have the
appropriate one for the StandScan. It does have one which is the right shape,
but not big enough. i am thinking that if I can get some sort of enlarging
adaptor, I should be good to go. The advantage of this solution would be that I
would not be relying upon expensive batteries, but rather on a rechargeable
back-up.

My problem is that I don't know the names for all these sorts of
connectors, which makes it hard to research online. plus, I live miles and
miles away from the nearest shop that sells milk, let alone electronic
adaptors!!! So, I think that someone in a better situation might find the
solution before me. I will keep trying though. Does anyone know, should there
be some sort of number/name on the connector that comes with the mains adaptor?

Sorry for the wooly-headed nature of this message, its early, I have
toothache and I haven't had any coffee yet.

Happy researching!
Sandy.

Hi Sandy,

Not sure if you missed my post from a couple of days ago, but I had written
to Harry from Standscan and asked for clarification about the 12 Volt
Battery Holder. I posted his reply which basically said that somehow they
had overlooked to make the 12 Volt Battery Holder available on the website
as an item you can buy even though they mentioned it. They have since fixed
this and if you look under Accessories on the website you will now find
that item at a cost of $4.95. It uses 8 simple Double A batteries.

Raul also posted a discount code Standscan made available to Viphone list
members. By using VIPHONE without the quotes as a discount code during the
checkout process, you get a 10% discount. Of course if all you want to order
is the 12 Volt Battery Holder because like in your case you already bought
the Standscan Pro you would only save 50 Cents, but the offer is there.
Those who order a Standscan Pro get 10% off it and a free 9 Volt Battery
Holder, if you add the 12 Volt Adapter and 12 Volt Battery Holder you will
get 10% off everything plus the free 9 Volt Battery Holder.

hi Sieghard,

Thanks for this info. Yes I did see your post and the good news of the
special offer! I do hope people have the same success as me and others here
with the StandScan Pro, i am finding even better now I am using Text Grabber
with translator. The interface of this app is much more straight forward and,
it seems, especially, when using it with the stand, is even more accurate than
Prizmo!!!

I will order the battery holder for 12 volts, however, I wonder if you
might know something? The connector needed for connecting either the mains or
the battery supplies, is exactly the same as the connector used by the PacMate.
It is a sort of round thing with a cylinder, so, the masculine half that goes
with the feminine. Does any of that make sense? With my Turbo Charger battery
back up for the iPhone, which is designed for USB powered equipment, there is
another connector that is the same exact shape, but is smaller, so, I ma
wondering, do you know if there exists a connector to enlarge the smaller to
the larger?

The reason I want to know is because I would prefer to keep all my battery
stuff to a minimum as I tend to forget to charge things etc. plus, the less
there is to carry, the better!

Aaaargh! please ignore all this wittering, I should just get the 12
volt holder!

Thanks again for keeping me abreast of things,
Sandy.

Re: An important suggestion for anyone contemplating buying the StandScan Pro!

2013-03-12 Thread Sandratomkins
Hi Sieghard,

I am sure you are right and that there are better lights to be had.
However, to work with the StandScan, they would have to be a sort of strip
light and flat so as to allow the box to fold flat. I know nothing about these
things, but can only assure you that the difference between the 9 volt battery
power output and the 12 volt mains output is dramatic. The former will,
probably, work in most reasonable light situations, but the 12 volt output will
allow the StandScan to work in all situations, regardless of the ambient
lighting or accidental shadows. I would hate to see people disappointed after
having trumpeted the usefulness of this accessory to the iphone and encouraging
people to go ahead and spend cash on it. I don't know which batteries, other
than that they are referred to as Pencil batteries. Indeed, I suspect I could
use my Turbo Charger to the same effect, but it doesn't have the right sized
adaptor. If you purchase the StandScan, perhaps, with your knowledge, you will
be able to advise us in this regard? If I knew the names of these connectors, I
could look for one to link my iPhone battery back-up to the StandScan and,
perhaps, get my 12 volts without the need to purchase the extra battery case or
the cost of buying more batteries.

I see we are still at the early stages with all this, but I can say that
with the 12 volt output and the box itself, we do now have a solution which
should work for everyone.

I am aware that I have been lucky using Prizmo et al, and that some people
might have the idea that this box might not be so user friendly for them,
especially if they have had bad experiences when trying to scan free-hand, so I
will take my StandScan Pro round some friends houses and try them with it, just
to reassure myself that using it is not skill based, but, in all honesty, I
don't think it is!

I look forward to your future input re the lights etc, it is good to have
so many different people with different professional backgrounds here on the
list so that we can empower ourselves.

Ciao for now,
Sandy.

 Hi,

i am delighted to see people's interest in the StandScan Pro, however,
after having had one for a month now and experimenting with it, also,
comparing it with the ScanBox, I must say that the major difference between
the two is the potential power of the lighting that comes with each unit.
The ScanBox only has a 9 volt battery, whereas, the StandScan can be souped
up to 12 volts by using either the mains cable with transformer or by using
the 12 volt battery case which you have to order as an add-on. I made a
mistake when I ordered my unit and didn't buy the extra battery case and so
can only get 12 volts of lighting when plugged into the mains. I am going to
order the 12 volt battery case today whichshould give me the extra umph that
I would need when on the go.

I cannot stress enough the importance of this extra power. Visually,
when you compare the 9 with the 12 volt lighting, the difference is dramatic
and only the 12 volt lighting will provide an absolutely reliable scan
regardless of all other factors. When the ambient lighting is good, you
could even use the box with no lights, of course, but as we are looking for
something that is going to render reliable results in all situations, we
 definitely need the 12 volts.

So, for anyone considering buying the StandScan Pro, can I suggest that
you buy the extra backup battery holder that takes several pencil batteries,
I think you will find it worth the extra few bucks.

Happy scanning, Sandy

I ordered a StandScan Pro and 12V adapter yesterday. I also did not find the
12V battery holder on the site; even directly on the StandScan Pro product
page itself, where relevant accessories are also displayed, and you can add
them just by checking their corresponding boxes, the only things shown are
the 12V DC adapter and some camera lens kit. I don't think the SC folks
meant to sell the 12V battery pack; the description just says that different
battery packs can be used, a 9V or 12V, implying that you could go out and
just get what you wanted from anywhere. Actually just looked at the FAQ page
on the site, and it seems to confirm this; question is why are batteries not
included, and answer is that batteries are not allowed to be transported by
air.

What problem did you have with PayPal linkage? I am in the U.S., just
ordered a StandScan Pro and 12V adapter yesterday, paid via PayPal using
direct account transfer, and had no issues. Am looking forward to its
arrival! Hope the site works better for you next time!

It said the page wasn't available. I have not tried since. As far as a
12v battery kit I would need to see the contacts irst. It's possible
that you can get a 12v battey and clip it onto the unit. This kind of
causes you to lose the portability though.

 Hi Sieghard,

I am sure you are right and that there are better lights to be had.
However, to work with the StandScan, they would have to be a sort of strip
light and flat so as to allow the box to fold flat. I know nothing about
these things, but can only assure you that the difference between the 9 volt
battery power output and the 12 volt mains output is dramatic. The former
will, probably, work in most reasonable light situations, but the 12 volt
output will allow the StandScan to work in all situations, regardless of the
ambient lighting or accidental shadows. I would hate to see people
disappointed after having trumpeted the usefulness of this accessory to the
iphone and encouraging people to go ahead and spend cash on it. I don't know
which batteries, other than that they are referred to as Pencil batteries.
Indeed, I suspect I could use my Turbo Charger to the same effect, but it
doesn't have the right sized adaptor. If you purchase the StandScan, perhaps,
with your knowledge, you will be able to advise us in this regard? If I knew
the names of these connectors, I could look for one to link my iPhone battery
back-up to the StandScan and, perhaps, get my 12 volts without the need to
purchase the extra battery case or the cost of buying more batteries.

I see we are still at the early stages with all this, but I can say that
with the 12 volt output and the box itself, we do now have a solution which
 should work for everyone.

I am aware that I have been lucky using Prizmo et al, and that some people
might have the idea that this box might not be so user friendly for them,
especially if they have had bad experiences when trying to scan free-hand, so
I will take my StandScan Pro round some friends houses and try them with it,
just to reassure myself that using it is not skill based, but, in all
honesty, I don't think it is!

I look forward to your future input re the lights etc, it is good to have
so many different people with different professional backgrounds here on the
list so that we can empower ourselves.

   Ciao for now,
   Sandy.

I tried to order the ScanPro over the weekend. I didn't find the 12v battery
holder anywhere on their page. Just the wall adapter. I also didn't order
because their page didn't link to PayPal properly. I will probably contact
the manufacturer regarding the lighting before I make the purchase at this
point. Thanks a bunch for the product review. It may almost make my Optacon
obsolete which I hope it does since my finger doesn't read as well as it
 once did.

I too have been hearing a lot about this 12v battery adapter, and have been
eagerly looking for it all over the web site. I also haven't found it.
The 12v power adapter came with my StandScan Pro, as did the 9v battery

get a 12v battery adapter, or anything about the pencil batteries. If
anyone already has some information on where we can get this, I'd
appreciate it if you'd post it to the list. In the meantime though, I'm
contacting the manufacturers to ask the question, as the 12v battery
adapter and the correct batteries are something I'd love to have to go with
this great product! I'll post to the list if I get an answer before I've
seen one posted.

Hi Brent,

I am not sure where in the world you are, but if you are in the US you can
also order it from Amazon for the same price.
Of course it may still ship from Hong Kong *smile*. Anyhow, we have a 12%
sales tax in British Columbia, Canada where I live so if I had to pay $3.60
tax on a $30 item I wouldn't get too upset about it.

Since this thing supposedly comes from Hong Kong or something, don't you
have to pay taxes or something when you receive it? If so, how much does
this add to the price, and can you just go online and pay it somewhere? I
think this could be a great accessory for scanning mail, if the area under
it is big enough to get a regular lettter or something under it. I've been
looking for something than the slow desktop scanner for awhile, but the
specialized integrated camera solutions cost a lot.

If you purchase the StandScan,
perhaps, with your knowledge, you will be able to advise us in this regard?
If I knew the names of these connectors, I could look for one to link my
iPhone battery back-up to the StandScan and, perhaps, get my 12 volts
without the need to purchase the extra battery case or the cost of buying
more batteries.

I see we are still at the early stages with all this, but I can say that

with the 12 volt output and the box itself, we do now have a solution which
should work for everyone.

I am aware that I have been lucky using Prizmo et al, and that some
people might have the idea that this box might not be so user friendly for
them, especially if they have had bad experiences when trying to scan
free-hand, so I will take my StandScan Pro round some friends houses and try

them with it, just to reassure myself that using it is not skill based, but,

in all honesty, I don't think it is!

I look forward to your future input re the lights etc, it is good to
have so many different people with different professional backgrounds here
on the list so that we can empower ourselves.

Ciao for now,
Sandy.

I must say that to me that indicates a design flaw in some form or shape
 as
there are so many awesome LED lights available these days which require
 very
little power. I sell Petzl headlamps at my store which run on 2 Triple A
batteries and put out 65 Lumins and while I am not an electronics guy to

it just doesn't make sense that these LED's can't be just as bright with a

you end up spending $30 to buy the batteries for that 12 Volt battery

I think you just have to buy a large backpack so you can put a 12 Volt car
battery in the pack, that should give you headlight brightness for about a
year. It will also be good for your fitness and weight loss given the weight
of the battery.

Hello,

Any electronics shop should sell it. Wait until you receive the 12 V adapter
so you can take it to the store with you. This way, the clerk can provide a
battery pack with the proper connector. In the US, I would suggest Radio
Shack. In NZ, I would suggest Dick Smith. I do not know the name of the
equivalent shop in Australia.

Hello everybody,

I have corresponded with Standscan before via email and just emailed them
asking to clarify the 12 Volt battery pack option. If they are as fast with
their response as last time I will be posting their reply here shortly.

I'll change the subject accordingly, like Standscan and the 12 Volt Battery

An important suggestion for anyone contemplating buying the StandScan Pro!

2013-03-11 Thread Sandratomkins
Hi,

i am delighted to see people's interest in the StandScan Pro, however,
after having had one for a month now and experimenting with it, also,
comparing it with the ScanBox, I must say that the major difference between the
two is the potential power of the lighting that comes with each unit. The
ScanBox only has a 9 volt battery, whereas, the StandScan can be souped up to
12 volts by using either the mains cable with transformer or by using the 12
volt battery case which you have to order as an add-on. I made a mistake when I
ordered my unit and didn't buy the extra battery case and so can only get 12
volts of lighting when plugged into the mains. I am going to order the 12 volt
battery case today whichshould give me the extra umph that I would need when on
the go.

I cannot stress enough the importance of this extra power. Visually, when
you compare the 9 with the 12 volt lighting, the difference is dramatic and
only the 12 volt lighting will provide an absolutely reliable scan regardless
of all other factors. When the ambient lighting is good, you could even use the
box with no lights, of course, but as we are looking for something that is
going to render reliable results in all situations, we definitely need the 12
volts.

So, for anyone considering buying the StandScan Pro, can I suggest that you
buy the extra backup battery holder that takes several pencil batteries, I
think you will find it worth the extra few bucks.

Happy scanning, Sandy.
