I was confused, too. The way I understand airplay, you have to have both devices i.e. your eye device and whatever speaker you're using connected to the same wifi network. Am I wrong, then? Hi: This device is just like any other airplay device in its treatment. So, if it's turned on and you're using an app that supports airplay, it will show up in your list of devices to play to. Obviously, if you're connected via bluetooth or line in, you would not see it as an airplay device, neither would you really be using it as such if you're using either one of those options. Even the Jambox if you're using line in, you cannot use the bluetooth feature. Does this clarify? Hi Chris, I don't know the answer exactly, but my guess would be that if you plug the speaker into your headphone jack with the included 3.5mm audio cable then this would overwrite Bluetooth and Airplay, I mean as soon as you plug in the audio cable all audio output goes that way anyhow and there really is little reason why you would want to play via Bluetooth or Airplay if that cable is plugged in. On my Jambox the 3.5mm cable has priority, if for example I connect the Jambox to my laptop with the cable I cannot play to it via Bluetooth from my iPhone. As far as playing via Bluetooth or Airplay that really is preference, the benefit if you want to call it that is that if you use Airplay you could play music or an audio book on the speaker and still use Voiceover on the device to do something else, maybe write an email or play a game or whatever. If you use Bluetooth then both Voiceover and whatever else you are playing goes to the speaker and there would be that tiny delay in reaction time if you were typing on the virtual keyboard you get with all Bluetooth devices. I think it's definitely nice that the speaker supports Airplay. The only thing that holds me back just a bit is the fact that the speaker is not able to also be a speakerphone, but then again it is only $70. I have access to a line of Bluetooth devices including a speaker/speakerphone like the Jambox from a company called Outdoor Technology. Their speaker is called the Turtle Shell as it's shape is somewhat like that of a green seaturtle. I only heard it at a trade show with a lot of background noise, but I would say it sounds probably as good as or better than the Jambox, but the regular retail is only $149 directly from their website. Anyhow, I'll post a separate message about it in order to keep the topics apart, but it is also a speakerphone, it's IPX6 water/dust proof, shockproof and can be mounted in various ways. Oh I see, thanks for explaining. I've only used Airplay with a program called Airfoil and an app called Airfoil Speakers Touch. I haven't used Airplay in a hardware setting if you can understand me. Oh, what I mean is that how would this thing get configured to join your wifi so it does become available? The Aftershokz bone conducting earphones might be an alternative that go behind the ear and don't block out other sounds. Right, but airplay isn't wifi only. Everyone, (including us when we first tested the speaker,) assumes that you need wifi to have an airplay supported device. I wonder how the airplay thing would even work on this thing? I looked at the manuals available and nothing is mentioned on how to use airplay with it. Hi. It simply shows up (if turned on,) as a device to choose from when you select airplay. So for example, if i'm listening to Pandora and I select airplay, I would see the Beatbox as an option, along with any other supported devices; like Apple TV, stereo receiver, etc. I've personally used it with Audible, Songza, OOTunes, and Pandora. Hi Annie, Given the size of this speaker I would say if you want it anywhere near your head/chest/shoulder it is too large even if you had some sort of holder or harness for it. If you don’t mind a wired speaker, there are very small ones available which might work much better for that. Hi Brent, I am not sure what you mean by the speaker creating a new network. If it is an Airplay capable device it will simply show up as an Airplay device when you double tap on the Airplay button. The Airplay button is present for all apps that support it, for example, on my iPhone I have it in the music app, the Downcast app, the Audible app and several or maybe all of the music apps and even news apps I have. It also comes with a 3.5mm audio patch cable allowing you to connect a non-bluetooth device such as a Victor Reader Stream or other mp3 player via that device's headphone jack to it. Hi Stacey and Will, The question about the charger and the price are both answered in the audio demo, I recommend you listen to it since it is very well done and you get a much better idea about the capabilities of the speaker. You can find the demo on the Speed Dots website and somebody even provided a direct download link to it which you can find in the archives, I believe it was /Richard who first posted about the speaker.
