Good idea about the mute switch and the vibrate. I should've thought of that.
By the next time I get an iPhone I probably will forget again.

Hi all,
I recently got my new iPhone 7 Plus. I decided to start out from
scratch, hoping that maybe some of the problems I have been
having would go away. So I didn't just plug it into my Mac and
go right away from my encrypted backup. I started from scratch.
And there was nothing at all telling me about voiceover or
letting me turn it on or anything. If my sighted husband had not
been there, I would have been out of luck. It's been a while
since I've tried setting up a device from scratch. But I thought
Apple had a way that would let you turn voiceover on right at the
beginning of the process. This was missing. What didn't I do
that I should've done? It turned out I went ahead and ended up
doing my encrypted backup restoration, since the set up from
scratch didn't fix any of the problems I had been having and
still have. But I was really surprised that there wasn't
anything enabling me to start voice over from the get-go.

triple click. I guess that's when you had to.

Hi Rajmund,
I guess my problem was, I didn't know quite when to do the triple
click home. The first thing that came up was that business with
the rotating languages, where you have to pick the one you want
to use. I guess I was expecting some notification about turning
on voiceover with triple click home. There wasn't one of those,
at least if there was, my husband didn't see it. So I didn't
actually click triple click home. Everything turned out OK in
the end.

2016-10-03 Thread Richard Turner

Mary, in the past, at that point, where the language choice comes up, even
though there was no prompting, the triple click home would turn on voiceOver. I
had set up several phones that way without any sighted help at all.
I just do not know if that would have worked with iOS 10.

Re: Setting up an iPhone without iTunes and without sided help

2016-10-03 Thread Mary Otten
Thanks for your offer. I got the phone set up just fine. It's interesting that
my husband, who is cited, didn't see anything about skipping anything about
VoiceOver turning it on etc. He did some initial set up. Then I turned on
voiceover, once the screen was up after the initial set up. Then it I ended up
going back and just using my encrypted backup, since it was going to be a fair
amount of work to set up the apps like I had them before, and my attempt to get
rid of some problems I was having was not successful. So I just use mine crept
back up, and everything is OK.

Re: Setting up an iPhone without iTunes and without sided help

2016-10-03 Thread Richard Turner

I have not set up an iPhone since the 6, but triple clicking home turned on
VoiceOver right after the phone powered up.
Now, if it has iOS 10 installed by default, that could be the problem. iOS 10
seems to be defaulting with the triple click home on "Ask," because the new
magnifier is on. Was iOS 10 already installed?
And since you have not been able to turn on Siri, you couldn't have used Siri
to turn it on.
That will be frustrating.
Richard
