When I slide my finger on the home screen to locate the App Store app, it
states a much higher number of updates in the app store. The discrepency is
about 5-6 numbers off when I access the update tab

You first need to get voiceover focus into the status bar., Use the three
finger flick down to open the status Center, or three finger flick up to open
the control panel..
