RE: Seeing Eye GPS App, Worth It?

2014-10-08 Thread Rob
Yes, you can use Navigon with BlindSquare.
Find the destination in BlindSquare. If you want to, turn tracking on in
the BlindSquare screen for the destination to get periodic updates telling
you how far you are from the destination and in which direction it is. This
is helpful sometimes to let you know that you have passed the destination.
From the destination screen in BlindSquare, double tap the Plan a route
button. BlindSquare will list the GPS apps you have installed that it
supports for providing turn by turn navigation instructions. If you have
Navigon installed, it will be in the list. When you double tap any GPS app
in the list, BlindSquare will launch that app and paste in the destination.
You then double tap the Start navigation button in the upper right corner
of the Navigon screen. Navigon may then ask you to choose vehicle or
pedestrian navigation.

If your main interest is knowing where you are, I think blindsquare is
better. However, if you want turn by turn navigation, it might be worth
the price since blindsquare does not provide this directly, however,
there are good main stream apps that will do this as well.

RE: Seeing Eye GPS App, Worth It?

2014-10-02 Thread Joe
Not quite what I was looking for, but I did find the response to my
question. The answer is no, one cannot currently create a POI out of thin
air as you could in Ariadne or MyWay. At the moment you have to create a POI
in Four Square and then look for that POI from within the Seeing Eye GPS
app. I guess it's not altogether complicated but kind of a pain in
the...well, to each his own. I read through the user manual earlier and was
not convinced it can replace my current method of using Ariadne and the free
Sendero Lookaround app. With the latter I especially enjoy being able to
shake the phone for updated cross street information. Thanks again guys for
your feedback.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but here goes: You can search
for a point of interest, and set a route to it.

Excellent. This was exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for. I don't
mind plunking down the money but want to make sure it lives up to
expectation. As far as I know, there is no means of trying out the app
except for the month-long subscription, which albeit fairly priced is still
money out of the wallet. Thanks guys. I'm especially intrigued that one need
only run one app for orientation. One more question though, is it possible
to drop a point of interest at a specific location similar to Ariadne, or is
it necessary to tie the POI to a specific address?

It depends on what you consider as being cost efficient.

I think that, by far, it is the absolute best GPS available for a blind
traveler. It is the easiest to enter data into.

Pros and cons:

I have gotten updates to other GPS apps that broke their accessibility until
another update fixed the issues. That will not happen with the Seeing Eye
app, because it is specifically designed for blind users.

The app is not self contained. By that, I mean that maps are not part of
the app. You must have cellular coverage when traveling, because the maps
are accessed using your data. That is both a plus and a minus, in that,
while your data is used, you also are assured to be using the latest
available maps, even if they were updated only, say, an hour ago, and
haven't been incorporated into other app updates. The fact that maps are
not included also is a big space saver, if that is a concern.

You can probably get about the same results by running a combination of 2 or
more GPS apps, for example, Look Around and Navigon or Tom-Tom, but that is
not only more time consuming and cumbersome to set up, but is a bigger
battery drain. Using the Seeing Eye app is the only app you need to run.

Overall, I'd say that, after using GPS apps for over a year on an iPhone 5,
If you can afford it, I would say that it is well worth the money.

Re: Seeing Eye GPS App, Worth It?

2014-09-29 Thread Mike Arrigo
If your main interest is knowing where you are, I think blindsquare is
better. However, if you want turn by turn navigation, it might be worth
the price since blindsquare does not provide this directly, however,
there are good main stream apps that will do this as well.

the map download screen of Navigon - Re: Seeing Eye GPS App, Worth It?

2014-09-29 Thread Charles Rivard
Because the subject matter has changed, I changed the subject line for
accurate reflection.

To get past the map download screen of Navigon, I go through and check the
maps I want to download, then use the download all button in the bottom
left corner of the screen after you have swiped past the last map listed.
It takes quite a while to download all of the maps, but, eventually, it will
have done so. I suggest using WiFi, as this will take a whole huge bunch of
your cellular data if you do not.

Re: the map download screen of Navigon - Re: Seeing Eye GPS App, Worth It?

2014-09-29 Thread Eileen Misrahi
What's nice about Navigon is that I can download the maps I only need at a
given time. Therefore, I'm able to save GB space on the phone. Also, once a
year the maps are upgraded for free. I don't need much more than that in my
area. If I really want or need the full function of Sendero GPS, I'll use it on
my BrailleNote Apex. I could be mistaken, but I haven't heard if the Seeing
Eye-Sendero app has added the ability to create a manual route like in the
Apex. I use My Way Lite to create a bread crumb route and it has worked quite
well. JMO.

One more question though, is it possible
to drop a point of interest at a specific location similar to Ariadne, or is
it necessary to tie the POI to a specific address?

battery drain. Using the Seeing Eye app is the only app you need to run.

Overall, I'd say that, after using GPS apps for over a year on an iPhone 5,
If you can afford it, I would say that it is well worth the money.

RE: Seeing Eye GPS App, Worth It?

2014-09-29 Thread Joe
Hi Jennifer,

Would you mind elaborating on why you won’t be renewing the Seeing Eye GPS
subscription? It just seems at odds with your assessment that the maps are
accurate, so I’m curious to know what I should keep in mind before subscribing.

Excellent. This was exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for. I don't
mind plunking down the money but want to make sure it lives up to expectation.
As far as I know, there is no means of trying out the app except for the
month-long subscription, which albeit fairly priced is still money out of the
wallet. Thanks guys. I'm especially intrigued that one need only run one app
for orientation. One more question though, is it possible to drop a point of
interest at a specific location similar to Ariadne, or is it necessary to tie
the POI to a specific address?

Re: Seeing Eye GPS App, Worth It?

2014-09-28 Thread Charles Rivard
I'm thinking that the originator of the thread is looking for an assessment of
the Seeing App rather than what's mainly been given so far. Suggestion: If
you won't be buying it or if you prefer others to it, it might be more helpful
if you say why you prefer others, so that a good decision can be made from the
feedback. Just my thoughts.

Hi, now that the Seeing Eye GPS app has been out a while, can people give
up-to-date impressions? Is it worth the subscription cost, or are there
alternatives that work better and more cost-efficient? Thanks for your input.

using common sense when using any GPS - Re: Seeing Eye GPS App, Worth it?

2014-09-28 Thread Charles Rivard
Regardless of which GPS app you choose, you should not follow the directions
to the letter. Obviously, if there is a street running parallel to you, and
the device says to turn right, you don't do it right then. You would turn
at your next opportunity, such as at the end of the block or into the next
driveway or something like that. A GPS is merely a navigation tool, and you
should never rely on it totally. This is usually stated in the agreement or
disclaimer when you first open the app.

Hi

Our iPhone users' group has been doing some comparisons of GPS and the UK
version of this didn't do well. It got one of our members to the place where
we meet, but then advised him to turn right from the pavement/sidewalk to
get into building which, unfortunately meant they would have ended up
playing with the traffic, rather than in the building they wanted.
Fortunately, he knew where he was.

Others who tried it didn't see any great advantages in it over the free
Apple Maps, but then there is quite good data for that where we are.

Best

Adrienne

RE: Seeing Eye GPS App, Worth It?

2014-09-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Kerri,

The Seeing Eye app works just fine in Canada. If you are curious you could
get a 1-month subscription for $9.99 and try it out. I have done so and I
like it a lot, but I really am not using a GPS app enough to pay the 3-year
subscription which is the best deal. If you want something with excellent
announcements of when you are just walking along as well as an app which can
give you turn by turn directions if you want to go to a particular place
then the Seeing Eye app is probably the best solution by a good margin. If
you don't need turn by turn directions that often and are OK with a little
less detail about things like intersections, then Blindsquare works really
well. Seeing Eye app will give you such detail as whether the intersection
is a 3-way or 4-way intersection and so on, very similar to what the Trekker
or MobileGeo was like.

Regards,

Sieghard
