Right click on desktop to show menu.
Hover mouse over [Sort By]
I reckon you will find that [Snap to Grid] is ticked.
Try clicking on that to untick it.
Now you should be able to move Icons to where ever you wish.
However it may take some effort to get them in line if they don’t Snap
I like to arrange small groups of related icons along the sides and corners of
the Desktop — I used to be able to put them there and they would stay there.
But suddenly, they started lining themselves in wide ranks and I was not able
to shift them so they would stay put.

Quite a few months ago esteemed member Ronni posted an answer to a question in
which she included an image of part of her Finder screen. The Sidebar had
several coloured [and maybe custom?] icons for the usual disks, folders, etc.

Two icons in my dock (Firefox and Thunderbird) regularly shift position
in the dock and sometimes completely disappear. These icons are the
most commonly used, but I can see no reason for them to move by
themselves. Any ideas for me?

In this case, I don't think it is just a size thing - I think the sidebar
icons must be designated as such somehow.
The reason I say this is if I go to my home folder in finder, set it to icon
view and then in the view options take the size all
with SL icons with it!
It's no big deal - just something I fancied playing with. When I get time,
I'll google-on and if I do find out any more, I'll report back!

icons (made with CocoThumbX) to the sidebar with the old tried and true method
of dragging the folder there, also by Command-Option dragging.
Since SL, some, but not all, of these custom icons

I have not idea what might be causing your problem, but it (both
Finder and Photoshop) sounds specifically like a drag and drop
handling issue. In addition to trying any general tactics (e.g.,
repairing permissions -- just a thought), perhaps you can do a web
search for issues with drag

Since updating to 10.1.1 I have noticed that my desktop icons have moved
considerably further right (about 55mm) from the right edge of my screen.
This is about double the distance prior to the point 1 update. Yes, I do
have my dock positioned on the right hand side, it was there before the
