Keyboard - powerbook doesn't recognise it straight away

2009-05-26 Thread Justin Davies
Hi wamuggers, got a small but frustrating problem - each time I shut
down my powerbook or disconnect the external keyboard, I have to
connect the keyboard 3 times before it recognises it and allows me to
type. The mac mouse which is connected to the keyboard works no
problem however.

I have a powerbook g4, latest os and it is a mac keyboard.

Hi John,

Ok, if you are not having any other problems in Leopard, you could
just reinstall the Address Book Application.
You will lose all the names you have in Address Book unless you want
to Export All your cards out as vcards then Import them in when
you have the new Address Book installed.

You need your Leopard Installation Disc.

1. Delete Address Book Application from the Applications folder.
2. Insert your Leopard Installation disk into the computer.
3. The disk will appear on your desktop.
4. Double click on the Optional Installs folder.
5. Double click on the Optional Installs.mpkg.
6. Click on (Continue) in Introduction.
7. Click on (Continue) in Software License Agreement.
8. Click on (Agree) to agree to the terms of the software license
agreement.

9. Click on the disclosure arrow ▶ next to Applications.
10.. Select (✓) Address Book
11. Click (Continue).
12.. After Address Book has been reinstalled, download and run the
10.5.7 Combo Update http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_7_Combo_Update

A profile query

2009-05-26 Thread Severin Crisp
As part of my operation I record many clips off air to a hard disk
recorder and save them on a disk in DVD format to carry upstairs to my
computer and save for archive. In the computer I edit and convert to
digital video (.dv) using Cinematize 2 Pro. I then view this on Quick
Time and save individual frames (Export/ Movie to Picture/ Millions
of colours, best quality, no compression) which gives me .pct stills
which I open in CS3. Sounds complicated but it is a good working
system for me.
On opening the .pct file in Photoshop CS3 the dialog notes that the
file has no embedded profile and gives the usual options. Whether I
choose not to colour manage or to Assign my working space profile
(Adobe RGB(1998)) the opened still frame differs significantly from
the QT view, usually being significantly darker. This makes sense as
it had no profile embedded. Naturally I can tweak to what I want in
Photoshop but it would be nice to know what profile it had at an
earlier time of life, and which presumably is applied in QT, but
which has been lost along the way in saving the frame. If I assigned
this profile, then converted to Adobe RGB(1998) I should get back to
the QT view.

Any words of wisdom would be much appreciated!

Keyboard

2009-05-26 Thread Justin Davies
Hi James, Ronnie, thanks very much for your responses. The keyboard
could be power hungry as I have a mouse plugged in to the left usb
socket in the keyboard and a printer plugged into the right. I only
connect the keyboard when I have the laptop connected to mains power.

I had no trouble with the Dell keyboard on currently os.

As to why I use an external keyboard, it is a question of ergonomics.
Any ergonomist will tell you that typing directly onto a laptop
keyboard for extended periods of time eg all day, and particularly
looking down at the laptop screen will eventually lead to posture
problems, loads of back and neck pain, and forearm soreness as well.
You don't see laptop only setups often in corporates any more as a
result. For the small amount that they cost, you should get one too.
Definitely better to type on IMHO.

Thanks for input thus far...

Justin

Just be aware that your enthusiasm may be curbed if you ever try to
copy very large amounts of data at once (such as cloning your hard
drive!). USB 2.0 tends to choke and slow to a crawl under such
conditions. This is why a drive with a Firewire port, while more
expensive, is a much better option. It is much better at sustaining
a transfer rate.

I certainly agree with Peter, I personally would not purchase a USB
External Drive for backup purposes or transferring large Video files.

Firewire is faster and more stable.

Cheers,
Ronni

Just be aware that your enthusiasm may be curbed if you ever try
to copy very large amounts of data at once (such as cloning your
hard drive!). USB 2.0 tends to choke and slow to a crawl under
such conditions. This is why a drive with a Firewire port, while
more expensive, is a much better option. It is much better at

G5 imac won't start

2009-05-26 Thread Mike Murray

Hi all

Our sole remaining G5 iMac in the fleet has decided to play up.

This morning when trying to wake it up as normal the screen remained
black and the fans started to roar. Held the off switch down for 5
seconds and it shut down. left it for a while, unplugged everything,
switched it on. The light came on, very slightly pulsing, but no
chime. Dark screen. After about a minute the fans came on again, so
shut it down again. Repeated the process a couple of times.

Thinking there may be a dust build up inside I tried to get the back
off, loosened the three screws, but couldn't get the back off...seems
very tight and I didn't want to wriggle it too much.

Opinions sought. Is there an easy solution that I'm overlooking?

Cheers
Mike

Re: A profile query

2009-05-26 Thread James Devenish
Hi Severin,

Since I don't export from Quicktime, I don't know the exact answer to
your question, but typical default profiles are (a) sRGB (which is
like a lowest common denominator) and (b) the source device profile.
I'd assume that QT passes along the colour values provided by your
recorder software, and if that was recording PAL TV (e.g., DVB-T
MPEG), then I'd assume the closest profile is would be the PAL/SECAM
RGB profile in Photoshop. But if you have edited them as DV in
Cinematize, you'd better check the specifics of DV/Cinematize.

Also, in Photoshop, be aware that you may have Proof Colours turned
OFF or turned ON.

Depending on where the images are going to be used, the best strategy
could be to assign PAL/SECAM to the images and them CONVERT the
colours to sRGB as your working space (pretty much the default for
JPEG).

James.

Which makes it even more annoying that Apple is now pushing you more more
to USB:

- Want to plug a drive to an airport extreme for network access - it has
to be USB.
- Macbooks no longer have firewire ports

Hi Guys

Ghostscript does work but the quality of the PDF hasn't always been good, we
have
had some issues with ghostscript where we have had to put the file back through
Acrobat to get it working.

But as always everyone has different thoughts.
