Application privileges

2010-03-29 Thread Adrian Skehan

Good afternoon all,

Can someone give me a clue regarding Application Permissions, I have recently
setup a new 27 iMac by migrating the data from my MacBook Pro, the process
stalled with less than a minute to go and the only fix was to shut it down (on
advice from Apple support,) when I restarted it every thing had been imported
but I found that most of the folders and applications were locked, while I was
able to rectify the locked folders on mass it was necessary to reset the
permissions on many of the application before I could do anything with them
i.e. edit save existing documents etc.

In the Sharing Permissions panel the following names and Privileges were
listed in various combinations;

_unknownRead Write
admin Read Only
system Read Only
everyoneRead Only
wheel Read Only

In some cases _unknown was set as the Owner

My question is: Who should be set as the Owner, Admin, System or should I add
my name to the list and be the owner? Should the system be the nominated Owner
for any particular application?

Regards,

Adrian

Strange 24-second pauses

2010-03-29 Thread David Noel

-- Hi All, can anybody throw any light on the following?

-- We lost power during the Great Hailstorm of March 22, and were off
for 4 days. When power was restored, I was pleased that my Intel iMac
(on 10.6.2) was able to power up again apparently normally. But since
then, with all applications (eg writing this email), for no obvious
reason the computer has at times gone into a 'pause mode'.

-- With this, during actions such as scrolling along a movie or
switching to another application, the screen more or less freezes and
the coloured wheel appears. After about 24 seconds the wheel
disappears and normal service is resumed. It's bearable but annoying,
without apparent ill effects in the long run, sometimes happening
every minute or so, sometimes going half an hour or more before
showing up.

-- I have the widget which shows CPU, disk etc usage and can't see
anything special with it (though invoking widgets during a 'pause'
usually shows everything without data, and sometimes the CPU widget
doesn't appear at all).

-- Any thoughts, please?

Cheers --

Re: Application privileges

2010-03-29 Thread James Devenish

Hi Adrian,

Did you set up your new computer with different Accounts compared to
your old one? That's that this problem sounds like -- the new computer
does not have the same accounts as the old one, so migrated files have
no equivalent permissions on the new computer.

The general solution to your problem is to repair permissions. This
can be done using Disk Utility. Please note that it's normal for it to
take a long time (minutes) and you should leave it to do so. It may
produce many warnings, but in normal circumstances these are spurious
and can be completed ignored. It's just important let your computer
Repair Permissions.

This should repair your system files and applications. However, there
may still be data files in your home folder which will need to be
manually updated to be Owned by your new Account.

James

2010-03-29 Thread James Devenish

Hi David,

the screen more or less freezes and the coloured wheel appears.
After about 24 seconds the wheel disappears and normal service is resumed.

Just a thought, can you start your computer using its Installation
Disc (DVD) and Repair Disk and Repair Permissions? It is possible
there is a problem with the filesystem after a loss of power. This can
also cause a loss of disk space, which in turn leads to performance
problems.

It also isn't clear from your e-mail whether you have external
peripherals attached to your computer nor whether you are using wired
or wireless keyboard/mice.

Also, do you have a home network and has anything changed since the storm?

David, this might be worth a look
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL947

If still no joy try opening the Activity Monitor in the Utilities Folder.
Set it to show all processes and sort the data by %CPU by clicking on that
column.
When the stall happens look at the monitor and see what is using the CPU.

Hi Stuart,

As both myself and Peter H mentioned earlier this morning.

From your old iMac copy this folder preference file into the same location
on the new iMac.

/Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)

 Home/Library/Preferences com.apple.mail.plist

Drag drop them in the same location on the new iMac.

They will overwrite the folder and files that are already there.

Not so much. Microsoft discontinued development of Internet Explorer
in 2003, and discontinued support at the end of 2005. It was removed
from their downloads site in January 2006. While it was considered
a decent browser int its day, it has long outlived its use by date.
Perhaps one reason it wasn't migrated is that it is not supported
even by Apple on Intel Macs. Some of the problems are outlined here http://www.soft32.com/download_195159.html
. You're much better off with pretty much any modern Mac OS X
browser. You will have Safari 4 already on your new Mac, or you can
download one of a dozen alternatives such as Firefox.

However what did not migrate was OS Mail.

It is not normal for your mail not to migrate. It's difficult to
comment further without knowing more about the settings you used
when doing the migration. Mail itself would have been migrated since
it's already on your new Mac. Your old mail files will still be on
your old Mac in /Users/yourusername/Library/Mail. Your old mail
preferences will be in /Users/Library/ Preferences
(com.apple.mail.plist). Copy these two items across to their
corresponding locations on your new Mac and every should work. Check
to see that they're not already there first, though.

I see Stephen,

I don't think you can change the default for new songs added being checked.

I find it is best to create Playlists and then I sync certain playlists for my
iPhone and my other iPods.

When my iPhone or iPods are connected I have selected under 'Music' - 'Selected
Playlists, artists genres', have checked the playlists I want. 'Include
Videos' is selected I have checked certain videos for my iPhone.
'Include Voice Memos' is also selected.

Sync Music and entire library in the music tab.

 Hi folks,

I have been searching the iTunes preferences for this without success.

For my iPhone I would like to select the option sync only checked songs

to iTunes it is checked automatically.

Is there some way of preventing this ?

There's no adjustment you can make in Safari to fix this. Unfortunately, while
it's comforting to know that Safari scores 100/100 in the Acid3 test and
Firefox scores only 71/100, Firefox's support for what is obviously
non-standard CSS construction wins out in this case.

Refer to Gary Dorn's message regarding the Synergy Customer Support page.
Sometimes, for what ever reason, some code just doesn't work with Safari,
despite it being one of the most standards-compliant browsers available. You do
need access to an alternative in these cases, the most popular being Firefox.
I personally use Safari by default, mainly for its support for (well-written)
modern web standards including strong html5, but also for its integrated PDF
reader. I have grown to loathe the Adobe Reader plugin. It has become a bloated
mess.

2010-03-29 Thread Crisp, Peter
Thanks for the update Ronni. Is there any mention of the resolution of
the Magic Mouse battery consumption issue which I noted as reported
quite widely in a recent issue of Mac Format. Maybe it is embedded in an
associated release article for 10.6.3.

2010-03-29 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Peter,

Haven't heard about Magic Mouse battery consumption issue fix.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4014

DON'T FORGET:
1. Backup your system BEFORE installing the Update.
2. Repair Permissions before and after installing the Update.
3. Run Software Update before and After installing the Updates
-

* Reliability is improved in many areas: photo screen savers,
printing, some third-party USB devices, wireless connections,
QuickTime X, sleeping and waking when connected to 2.4 GHz wireless
networks, iDisk Sync and syncing calendars via MobileMe, and more.

* A problem with Time Machine backups using an AirPort connection has
 been fixed.

* Time Machine backups to a Time Capsule, including multiple
 computers, are more reliable.

* A few problems when saving or handling files with an SMB server
 volume have been resolved.

* A new crash-reporting option has been added. The preferences in the
Console application now offer an option to Automatically send
anonymous diagnostic and usage data to Apple. In previous versions
of Mac OS X, if a crash happened, the system would prompt you to
 send that data.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4063

* The annoying Preview bug Adam wrote about in Two-Line URLs Broken
in Snow Leopard's Preview (10 September 2009) is finally fixed.

The update also includes dozens of security fixes that tackle
problems with maliciously crafted files, messages, and Web sites, as
well as updating MySQL to 5.0.88, PHP to 5.3.1 (or 5.2.12 under Mac
OS X 10.5.8), Ruby on Rails to version 2.3.5, and various other
 components to newer versions.

I forgot to mention that after installing OS X 10.6.3 and the computer
restarts, iCal launches and Upgrading iCal Calendars.
DON'T stop it doing this, let it complete the updating of your iCal Calendars.

Apple warning for installing Updates: Do not interrupt the installation process
once you have started to update your system.
