Hi Steven

My personal preference for colour inkjet is Epson then Canon
Have lots of clients with them and they work extremely well. (I've got an
Epson Tx810FW at home).

Marlene - if only doing black and white printing may be better to consider
Laser. Cheaper running costs long term. Brother have a great range that just
work and just last.

Can't find the wamug archive link direct to it but have mentioned more

But they would be more recommendations based on what I've sold and worked

But yes, I'd much rather pay a bit more for my printer (knowing that it

Glad you like the Epson range. I've always been happy with them. Hence why I

But yes, thy don't do an A3 unfortunately. They used to also do laser

Re: ROUTER

2010-10-21 Thread Julie Bedford

Hi Daniel,

The Belkin is about 2 /3 years old, I bought it from iinet. I
purchased a laptop last year and could not get that
to work. I eventually got it working after days of spending time
fiddling. Now with the ipad, I am experiencing
the same problems. The shop could'nt help me connecting the lap top,
so not much point asking them about

the ipad.

It is probably an incorrect setting. Thinking of getting someone in
to set it up for me as I simply do not have
the time messing around with it. What is your charge rate ? I am in
Carine.

Thank you so much for your info though.

Hi Julie

Surprised to hear that, as I've found the Belkins I've set up for

Normally Belkin is one of my recommendations.
The other brands I tend to work with are Netgear and Billion. Both
(and
Belkin as well normally) I recommend and find work well with
everything.

Fairly easy to set up.

Personally (and this is my own experience, so others may differ),
I'm not a
big fan of Netcomm or D-Link. I find them to be a bit un-reliable
and don't
last as long. (I've gone through 3 Netcomm modems with a client and
they
only last about 9 months before falling over. All covered by
warranty, but

still a pain in downtime and swapping them out for a new one)

Just my 2cents with anyway.
However, if it's a setting, then a new modem may do the same as
well. So if
the Belkin isn't too old a model, may be worth revisiting the
settings for

it,as another idea as well ;)

Hope that helps.

Re: Best value wireless multifunction printer/scanne r for Mac?

2010-10-21 Thread Marlene Oostryck

Hi All

Many thanks for all the recommendations - but -
I have been out looking again this afternoon and came across a Canon
MP560 for a really good price at Dick Smith - $ 129!
The same machine was $229 at the Apple shop, $197 at JB Hi-Fi and the
Good Guys, and $168 at Office Works. It really pays to shop around for
the best deal.
There is a shop here in Freo that has great prices for genuine ink
cartridges so I hope I am set for the next few years.

I want to scan and copy so a mono-printer will not suit, and a laser
printer is too large for my small desk - so - I hope I have made the
right choice. I have used Canon printers for 15 years with PC's
without any problems at all - so hope the new Canon and Mac will work
equally as well.

Re: Best value wireless multifunction printer/scanne r for Mac?

2010-10-21 Thread Steven Knowles

The opinion of one salesman about Brother was that they're not bad for laser
printers, but they fall short on inkjet. But yep, Brother worth a look if you
need A3, and according to the same sales guy, no prob with Mac compatibility.

To clarify for others though, the HPs I mentioned (8500 and 8500A) accommodated
'legal size' paper for flatbed scanning. Not A3. I think you need to move up to
higher end commercial stuff for A3.

A4 = 210 × 297mm
Foolscap = 210 × 330mm
Legal (USA) = 216 × 356mm
A3 = 297 × 420mm

Cheers, Steven

2010-10-21 Thread Daniel Kerr

Weird.
I sold a client a colour inkjet A3 printer/scanner (the MFC-6890CDW) and
they love it. And it works really really well. Wasn't terribly expensive for
an A3 unit, with an RRP of $579 (I did it cheaper then that though).
But yeh, the use it all the time and are very happy with it.

Still, always different opinions for everything. That's what makes it that
much harder when looking around! :o)

To clarify for others though, the HPs I mentioned (8500 and 8500A)
accommodated 'legal size' paper for flatbed scanning. Not A3. I think you need
to move up to higher end commercial stuff for A3.

 A4 = 210 × 297mm
 Foolscap = 210 × 330mm
 Legal (USA) = 216 × 356mm
 A3 = 297 × 420mm

Makes you wonder who's making the money on the cartridges though, as I can

But yes, I'd much rather pay a bit more for my printer (knowing that it
lasts longer) and pay less for the cartridges.

Glad you like the Epson range. I've always been happy with them. Hence why I
have no problems ever recommending them.
But yes, thy don't do an A3 unfortunately. They used to also do laser
printers and they got out of that too. (Which is a shame as my Epson Colour
C1100N has just chugged away for years! And barely eats toners at all!) I
love it. I dread the day something goes wrong with it,touch wood.

Hey, maybe we can lobby the government ... legislate for no more home
printers! Publicly accessible printers only, wireless connectivity makes it
possible. Collect your hardcopy from any nearby printer after putting in
 your

can be housed in weather-proof cubicles, onboard web cams dissuading passing
hoons from putting the boot in ... might be a good use for all those public

 I
know where a public telephone is anymore). I'd post my letter to Ms Gillard

I did find some time to take a peek at the Epson products online by the way.
They look good, but couldn't see any multifunctions with anything bigger

an A4 flatbed, which has evolved into a must-have for me. Marlene, only good
reports about Epson if A4 flatbeds are good for you.

Re: Best value wireless multifunction printer/scanne r for Mac?

2010-10-21 Thread Stuart Evans

Having been to many printer vendor service training sessions where it was
clearly outlined, it is no secret that they sell printers in order to have
a continual revenue stream of consumables including
paper/ink/toners/drums/transfer rolls etc. (printers means..any output
device that needs toner or ink, including those wonderful photo kiosks you
see at Retravision, Harvey Norman and other places that know jack #$%^ about
cameras and film...but I digress...)
I know one company a while back that offered a free colour laser printer
if you purchased the toner cartridges.
I have had several customers very annoyed that the cartridges for their $59
inkjet cost more than the printer. And that's MY fault??? ;-) The problem
is it is more expensive to repair than buy a new one so - off to the tip!
And then you have the trusty HP Laserjet 4M, the 2100 and a couple of others
still hanging around and still reliable. Like Daniel I try to keep them
going or pass them on. A bit like a lot of my Mac customers down here who
are still running their Apple Lisa and ClarisWorks hee hee (I was going
to insert the Deliverance duelling banjo's here... No offence to my Albany
Denmark cousins) :-)

As Daniel says, the consumer has driven what we have got. To steal an
analogy, we are all frogs in a slowly boiling pot and one day - when the
only shopping you can do is online, or down the road at the Coles or Woolies
one stop to buy everything including your petrol, hardware, home theatre,
clothes, furniture, music, videos, toys, fishing camping, computers, ipods
and oh by the way we sell groceries too shop. - we'll wich it was like
the old days when the milko delivered the milk and the baker delivered the
bread. (sigh) I must be ready for bed. ;-)

Daniel, after your Epson recommendation I'd probably take a closer look at
Epson, but I'm all out of steam looking at printers - head is spinning. Too
 much choice.

Marlene, I've had a mind change after taking a look at printers in a couple
 of
stores today. I've moved from Canon to HP. I came across an HP Officejet Pro
8500, and when lifting the lid noticed that the flatbed looked larger than
 the
others. It is. The 8500 has a flatbed scanning size which accommodates
foolscap (legal) size paper. For me, that can be pretty handy at times. I
couldn't find any Canon's on display which went beyond the usual A4 size
flatbed. Bear in mind though that even if the flatbed takes only up to A4, I
think scanning via the document feeder allows you to scan longer documents.
 My
fear with scanning via the document feeder is that if it's an important or
flimsy document, document feeders tear your original to shreds.

The I spotted the newer 8500A. I assumed that must have a few extra features
than the 8500, however the 8500A on display had only an A4 size flatbed. The
Officeworks salesman claimed that that was a difference, and that if I wanted

My personal preference for colour inkjet is Epson then Canon
Have lots of clients with them and they work extremely well. (I've got an

Marlene - if only doing black and white printing may be better to consider
Laser. Cheaper running costs long term. Brother have a great range that just
 work and just last.

Can't find the wamug archive link direct to it but have mentioned more

I want my printer mainly for black and white text printing for home use -

Re: was printers, now it's lost iPhone emails,....

2010-10-21 Thread Daniel Kerr

OMG,..yes!!!
Don't get me started on Vodafone and the iPhone!!!
Was just talking to a friend about it today.
I send emails from the iPhone, and they appear in my Sent box on the iPhone
and the sent box of my IMAP mail server, and then when I check on my laptop,
it also tells me they are in the Sent folder (cause it's all running IMAP
for the MacWiz server).
But people don't get them!!!
So I've given up answering emails when I'm out on the road on my iPhone. I'm
going to stick another $20 on my iPad Telstra prepaid and use that for the
time being. Damn you Vodafone for making me use Telstra!
(or maybe it's a conspiracy theory with Telstra hacking the Vodafone network
to steal all their clients who get annoyed that the Vf network doesn't work
and the Telstra one does,...hmm).

And yes, I agree it's all sitting in a pipe somewhere, and look out when it
does burst!! 'cause you know you won't just get lost emails,..you'll also
get all those missing single socks and luggage ;o))

Stuart,...put that Red Bull/V/Mother drink down,..and walk away!! Time for
bed for you I feel. Lol :o)
(Not that I can talk, went to bed at 6am and got up at 7.30am) ;o)
And I'm still going,lol :)
Going love being a work-a-holic,...lol ;o)

Subject: Re: Best value wireless multifunction printer/scanner for Mac?

Can't find the wamug archive link direct to it but have mentioned more
details previously in archives from me, Ronni and others.
(just on road so bit hard to get to it).

But they would be more recommendations based on what I've sold and worked
with over the last 9+ years.

 Kind regards
 Daniel
(who hopes this gets delivered due to vodafone iPhone issues).

I'm glad you asked your dumb question as I too have been looking at the
shops recently with a view to purchasing a Multi-function printer - so I am
looking at the responses you get.

There is just such a huge range out there and it is so hard to decide what
 is
right. All the retail experts have a different view! - and not many know
 what
 works well with Macs.
I want my printer mainly for black and white text printing for home use -
(photo prints I do at Harvey Norman). I also want to scan and copy. Don't
 need
the fax. I will use usb connection.
The main concern is best value for ink useage and the recommendations seem
 to
be - go for a middle range (better value ink cartridges).
I know laser printers are better value re ink - but the footprint is too
 large
for my desk - so inkjet is the way I will go.
I'm considering a Canon Pixma MP560 - but would love some personal
 recommendations from WAMUG users.

Office Works have some good deals now, and JB Hi-Fi are offering 50% off ink
(limit of 3) with a printer purchase.

 Good hunting, Steven!

also check with iinet support you may have to change protocoll

in basic adsl settings you may have to change something

There is a shop here in Freo that has great prices for genuine ink cartridges

I want to scan and copy so a mono-printer will not suit, and a laser printer

so hope the new Canon and Mac will work equally as well.

I have always had a good run with Canon printers. My venerable IP3000 is still
running strong (has cartridge paper feed, double-sided and CD-printing). My
daughter is now using that, and my MP970 which is now over 18 months old is
going just as nicely (same features, plus smarter CD printing, networking, OCR
with Omnipage LE and photographic inks). So far I think I've replaced all of
the inks in this thing twice since I bought it.

Re: ROUTER

2010-10-21 Thread Stuart Evans

Hi Julie,

It is likely to be a security password encryption issue. Check whether it is
WEP, WPA or WPA2. I'm assuming it is WPA2. Try different options (but not
WEP).
You may also have to do a firmware update. We had to do that for some
Linksys ADSL modems before they would work with Apple wireles.

Might save you a couple of dollars!

Cheers,
Stuart

However, if it's a setting, then a new modem may do the same as
 well. So if

it,as another idea as well ;)

Re: ROUTER

2010-10-21 Thread David Noel
Hi Julie --

-- To endorse Stuart's recommendations, I remember than when I first got my
Belkin router (maybe 5 years ago), there were continually-recurring problems
until I got and applied a firmware update.

-- You may have to push a bit to get the right update. When I first tried
Belkin customer service, I scrambled for hours with various of their Indian
customer service people. It was not until I mentioned that I had a WHITE
Belkin router that I was passed to Australian Customer Service, apparently
the only people who had the right firmware for my model.

Sharing Multiple USB HDs - can be done!

2010-10-21 Thread Brian Risbey

Hi WAMUGers

Looking to network USB HDs and the answer was under my nose all the time I
looked up Airport BaseStation Extreme in the Apple Store and :

The AirPort Extreme supports up to four USB devices connected through a powered
USB hub (it has it's own power cable).

Share your hard drive.

You can share an external USB hard drive over your wireless and wired networks
by simply connecting it to the USB port on your AirPort Extreme Base Station.

Called AirPort Disk, this feature is perfect for sharing files and more.
