Hi Walter, I have a similar device - I'm sorry but I have not tested it yet nor do I have it with me as it is packed in storage but I do recall instructions mentioned that that the device had to be selected in Audacity as well for it to work. The device shows up in system profiler hardware USB as USB PnP Audio device and also in the sound config/panel under Input. The user manual does not mention Macs, it only shows PC setup screens. Re: Windows on a Mac
Hi Adrian, 20 gigs would be heaps if you were just going to install 7, your software and have room for updates and a bit of processing. You'd probably end up taking around 10 gigs for Windows 7. Personally, I'd put more if you can afford it - resizing the bootcamp partition sucks, and you do need a lot of spare space to do it, usually double the size you want the partition to be - eg if you want a 50 gig partition, you'll may need 100 gigs of free space on your hard disk to do this. It can be a bit of a messy process if you need to change. Otherwise, using a virtual machine might be a better option as you can always resize that as you need with less hassle. Re: NTFS to mac
Hi Peter, If you want the disk to be usable by both Windows and Mac systems, it's best to have the disk in FAT32 mode, which can be done via Disk Utility in Snow Leopard. NTFS is readable by your system, you just won't be able to write to it without third party software. If you are just going to be just using the disk on your Mac system, I'd recommend formatting it to Mac OS Extended (I prefer to have it journaled) so that you can store files over 4GB in size on it. FAT32 is limited to 4GB files, which may be a problem if you're working with e.g. large movie files. The only real hassle would be moving all your data on the disk to somewhere temporary while you format it, as this would of course, erase all the data on it. Re: Problem with WD My Book drive
Hi Graham, Be careful if you decide to put this drive in an external enclosure - I did that with a WD drive from one of these units and it blew the enclosure power supply - and smoke came out of the molex adaptor. It was kinda cool looking, bar the data loss. The odd thing is though, attaching it to the WD power supply didn't have this problem. In the end, the problem was with the power connector on the hard disk that was causing the problem. I've had another go on me in similar fashion - I'm a fan of WD and this sort of behaviour has been a bit of a surprise. I'm not sure if it may have been related to the powersave feature of these drives - I figure powering a drive up and down regularly may increase the chance of it freaking out. Personally, I use CA Anti-Virus from Computer Associates - I've had good experiences with their products in the corporate and personal environment. It has a small footprint and have a multi-license for home users - In the free field, I find AVG a bit slow and unreliable in terms of finding viruses and prefer Avast - though, this requires a yearly registration, which is free. Not having a go at the free products as CA used to provide a free home user license but I think that if want to be sure your Windows box is safe, it's best to put a few bucks down a year and get a decent antivirus product - kind of like paying for a car service, since for some reason, computers always get a car analogy attached to them. Having said that, really not a fan of Norton products, due to their hunger for resources and their reluctance to be removed, should their be an issue with the software that needs fixing. I suspect that an upgrade to 1.1.2 may fix, but I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has had anything like this problem. I am aware that there is a known bug in earlier versions, but this seems to be associated with wireless connections. This one is a wired connection. -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Tool kits
Myself, I just use a cheap screwdriver with swappable heads - mine has 6 different heads and cost me about 7 dollars from Super Cheap Autos - for the same reason as mentioned before, if I lose it, I won't be too fussed. I used to carry around a bag of tools from dick smiths but I find I simply don't need it anymore. I have a torx set, though I don't have to use that too often. I have a 1 gig usb thumb drive for carrying around various anti spyware progs and other utils and for backups and if your workplace is feeling generous, get them to pay for a external firewire/usb2 case and a hard disk - if only all computers could boot in firewire target disk mode, all I'd need is my ibook (: Gavin Criddle Helpdesk Officer Humanities IT Services Curtin University of Technology t: +61 08 9266 7237 e: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Tool kits From: Aurora [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] In-Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi, I have a vaguely off topic question. Ibook 3rd party flash
Hi Mark, This is probably a silly question but have you ever had issues with this flash? I probably won't use the external video feature much but I figure I may as well should I ever need it one day. Strawberry Imac for sale
Hey y'all, I'm selling my Strawberry Imac if anyone wants it: Strawberry Imac 333MHZ Idance stand 288MB Ram 20Gig hard drive Logitech Cordless Optical Mouse OS 9 and 10.1 media OS 10.2 media $150 If you're living in the metro area, I'll happily drop it off. I'm selling this as I just picked up a 12 ibook - which really offended me - laptops are not allowed to be working, fully patched and working wirelessly 30 mins out of the box - that's just not on. Re: Stupid question about thumbdrives
My machine is running OS9.2 and I was wondering which is a good brand to pick up. Is there any that can't run on that config??? I personally use Astone USB keys - they work well on my XP + OSX/9 machines - they have a nice form factor too - don't get stuck on cases with irritating bezels ie HP machines - I get mine from PLE Computers - www.ple.com.au
Backup Disk Ideas?
A cheapish idea would be to buy two 3.5 IDE drives and then buy external USB drive cases for them - I think a 120/160GB drive is about around 100 dollars these days and a USB case should cost around the same - I used one of these setups once at an old workplace - a nice cheap solution. Oh, and a piece of tape to mark backup drive X on the drive (: Only downside was the cooling fan for the drive case was a little loud - and since I was sitting near the server most of the day, it was a bit irritating. I usually turned it off all day until I left for the day to leave the overnight backups running.
Any Garageband users out there?
Hi everyone, Does anyone on the list use Garageband? I'm in the process of deciding what sort of specs I'll need to be using this effectively - I'm quite impressed with this bit of software. I've had a play with a G5 1.8, a G4 Powerbook 12 and 15 and a G4 12 ibook - all of which had 256MB which didn't seem to be enough - after programming a few basic tracks, the system informed me that it didn't have enough memory to run what I was doing. I don't have much hope for my G3 Imac. I currently have an XP PC that I use for audio production, which is a PIV 2.8 with a gig of RAM, which works fine for recording and mixing - would I need to be looking at least a gig of RAM for Garageband, or possibly more? I'm quite tempted to get a G4 Powerbook for portability (so my angsty music about the vending machine outside the office can be recorded when it next steals my choc chip cookie) though as I find with working on my PC, hard disk space is an issue so maybe a G5 Powermac with a hard disk or two could be the way to go? Any suggestions would be welcome - I like Garageband but I'm sure I'll pick up some more music software for the Mac once I get hooked on using it, so any advice/experience about audio production on a Mac would be appreciated. Thanks, Gav

Norton AV Issues
I'll add my two cents to this - I recently removed NAV from my girlfriends XP PC (to upgrade to a new version of AV no less) and I had some serious problems with this - Instantly lost all wireless network connectivity - tried add and remove the network adapter - no luck. In the end, I had to connect via Ethernet cable, give the machine a fixed IP, remove the Ethernet cable and magically the wireless adapter worked again. And somehow, her copy of Office was also corrupted, which needed a reinstall. Don't ask me - was not impressed at all - neither was girlfriend (: I personally use e-Trust antivirus for my XP PC - has a lot less overhead than NAV, which I wouldn't recommend in a PC with less than 256mb of ram, unless you like waiting 5/10 minutes for your PC to load up. Gav Having anything offered by Symantec (eg Norton) anywhere near my Mac is much like allowing a tiger snake indoors in the hope that it might make a good mouser. My cynicism and phobia about this outfit goes back well before 2002. Vlad James snipped I know one thing: if I did own a PC, I wouldn't be letting Nortons anywhere near it. I wouldn't even show it the box. more snipping From an ISP helldesk point of view, anything made by Norton since 2002 is the biggest source of email and browsing issues that I have seen in a long time. Every few weeks, it updates itself and manages to break a decent number of pc's.

iBook vs Powerbook
Hi everyone, I've had the rather enjoyable experience of my faithful Compaq laptop giving up the ghost and I'm in the market for a replacement. While shopping around, I thought I might try a Mac laptop for something different, as I don't need to rely on anything PC specific. It would also make a pleasant replacement for the iMac g3 running OS X. I'm basically after a simple portable PC that can be used for web browsing, minor bit of graphic work and something that easy to hook up to a TV to play DVD/VCD/mpeg/avi/real audio type files. I'm tempted to go with a 12 powerbook G4 as these have a bit of extra grunt over the iBook (and look cool) and are apparently more suited to connecting to external monitors/TVs and watching videos - However, would it be a better idea to go with a iBook and drop in some more RAM and a faster hard drive and save some money, or would I notice a huge performance increase with a Powerbook? I'd upgrade whatever laptop I get up to at least 512MB of RAM. One other question - my old Compaq (m700 piii) used to get quite warm and I'd have to put a book/table on my lap as it got quite uncomfortable - has anyone out there had any experiences with heat and the new G4 laptops? I don't feel like wearing my asbestos trousers just to use a laptop. I've tried to find some recent G4 pbook vs ibook reviews but haven't had much luck. Thanks for your help, Gav
