Re: LP recording software

2010-04-14 Thread Gavin Criddle

Hi Walter,

I have a similar device - I'm sorry but I have not tested it yet nor do I have
it with me as it is packed in storage but I do recall instructions mentioned
that that the device had to be selected in Audacity as well for it to work.

It may have been under Audacity Preferences Devices

and that it needs no pre-amp contrary to
 an analogue signal.

The device shows up in system profiler hardware USB as USB PnP Audio device

The user manual does not mention Macs, it only shows PC setup screens.

Once you can see input levels in Sound Input you can use any

So concentrate on getting the level meter to show input, the install
 process needs investigating I reckon.

I cannot find very much info about this device so I suspect it may
have been branded Norwegia but may actually be something else. Not
 sure.
Does it state it is OSX compatible anywhere?
What is it listed as within System Profiler Hardware USB?

 Good Luck

 MAM-A Gold
 Verbatim UltraLife Gold
 Any others?

Info from articles also suggest that +R gives higher quality than -R.

Before I place an order any feedback would be appreciated.

Re: Windows on a Mac

2010-03-25 Thread Gavin Criddle

Hi Adrian,

20 gigs would be heaps if you were just going to install 7, your software and
have room for updates and a bit of processing.

You'd probably end up taking around 10 gigs for Windows 7.

Personally, I'd put more if you can afford it - resizing the bootcamp partition
sucks, and you do need a lot of spare space to do it, usually double the size
you want the partition to be - eg if you want a 50 gig partition, you'll may
need 100 gigs of free space on your hard disk to do this. It can be a bit of a
messy process if you need to change.

Otherwise, using a virtual machine might be a better option as you can always
resize that as you need with less hassle.

Re: NTFS to mac

2010-01-19 Thread Gavin Criddle

Hi Peter,

If you want the disk to be usable by both Windows and Mac systems, it's best to
have the disk in FAT32 mode, which can be done via Disk Utility in Snow Leopard.

NTFS is readable by your system, you just won't be able to write to it without
third party software.

If you are just going to be just using the disk on your Mac system, I'd
recommend formatting it to Mac OS Extended (I prefer to have it journaled) so
that you can store files over 4GB in size on it. FAT32 is limited to 4GB
files, which may be a problem if you're working with e.g. large movie files.

The only real hassle would be moving all your data on the disk to somewhere
temporary while you format it, as this would of course, erase all the data on
it.

Regards,

Gav

do you have audacity or similar audio rec/edit software???\par

basically get a jack stereo to jack stereo cable connect the line in to the headphone/line out, set itunes ready for play\par

start audacity set to record from line in start recording, change windows click play on itunes, during the play/record session you can go back to audacity watch recording levels also the wave appearing in the window\par

after stopping the recording in audacity edit end start export entire file to what ever you need (wave,aiff,mp3) or may be you find software that records directly from any source in the computer (w/o cable)\par

you need a jack double adapter if you want to listen as well during recording\par

I've waited a year before switching people to a new OS on a production

Hi Severin,

One other idea is to make a partition on the local hard disk and clone a copy
of the DVD there - this would mean you'd always have a copy handy, even if your
DVD failed - touch wood.

Re: macbookpro overheating

Hi David,

Boot from your install DVD and see if a repair via Disk Utility will
help - sounds like a kernel panic.

You may need to backup your data and try a complete reinstall - if the
problem reoccurs, you may have a hardware fault.

If your Mac is overheating and your fans are turning on a lot, I'd
take it to an Apple repairer - I've had a couple of fans go funny,
turning on full/intermittently - they've been replaced and run quiet as.

Re: Problem with WD My Book drive

2009-04-02 Thread Gavin Criddle
Hi Graham,

Be careful if you decide to put this drive in an external enclosure - I
did that with a WD drive from one of these units and it blew the
enclosure power supply - and smoke came out of the molex adaptor. It
was kinda cool looking, bar the data loss.

The odd thing is though, attaching it to the WD power supply didn't have
this problem. In the end, the problem was with the power connector on
the hard disk that was causing the problem.

I've had another go on me in similar fashion - I'm a fan of WD and this
sort of behaviour has been a bit of a surprise. I'm not sure if it may
have been related to the powersave feature of these drives - I figure
powering a drive up and down regularly may increase the chance of it
freaking out.

Re: windows virus scanner

2008-10-01 Thread Gavin Criddle
Personally, I use CA Anti-Virus from Computer Associates - I've had good
experiences with their products in the corporate and personal environment.

It has a small footprint and have a multi-license for home users - In the free
field, I find AVG a bit slow and unreliable in terms of finding viruses and
prefer Avast - though, this requires a yearly registration, which is free.

Not having a go at the free products as CA used to provide a free home user
license but I think that if want to be sure your Windows box is safe, it's best
to put a few bucks down a year and get a decent antivirus product - kind of
like paying for a car service, since for some reason, computers always get a
car analogy attached to them.

Having said that, really not a fan of Norton products, due to their hunger for
resources and their reluctance to be removed, should their be an issue with the
software that needs fixing. I always enjoy the experience of helping someone
at home with think I have a virus type queries and discovering a 30 day trial
version of Norton Security Suite 2005 - no really.

Anyhow, YMMV.

Backup Disk Ideas?

2005-02-08 Thread Gavin Criddle
A cheapish idea would be to buy two 3.5 IDE drives and then buy external
USB drive cases for them - I think a 120/160GB drive is about around 100
dollars these days and a USB case should cost around the same - I used one
of these setups once at an old workplace - a nice cheap solution. Oh, and a
piece of tape to mark backup drive X on the drive (:

Only downside was the cooling fan for the drive case was a little loud - and
since I was sitting near the server most of the day, it was a bit
irritating. I usually turned it off all day until I left for the day to
leave the overnight backups running.

Any Garageband users out there?

2005-02-08 Thread Gavin Criddle
Hi everyone,

Does anyone on the list use Garageband? I'm in the process of deciding what
sort of specs I'll need to be using this effectively - I'm quite impressed
with this bit of software. I've had a play with a G5 1.8, a G4 Powerbook
12 and 15 and a G4 12 ibook - all of which had 256MB which didn't seem to
be enough - after programming a few basic tracks, the system informed me
that it didn't have enough memory to run what I was doing. I don't have
much hope for my G3 Imac.

I currently have an XP PC that I use for audio production, which is a PIV
2.8 with a gig of RAM, which works fine for recording and mixing - would I
need to be looking at least a gig of RAM for Garageband, or possibly more?

I'm quite tempted to get a G4 Powerbook for portability (so my angsty music
about the vending machine outside the office can be recorded when it next
steals my choc chip cookie) though as I find with working on my PC, hard
disk space is an issue so maybe a G5 Powermac with a hard disk or two could
be the way to go?

Any suggestions would be welcome - I like Garageband but I'm sure I'll pick
up some more music software for the Mac once I get hooked on using it, so
any advice/experience about audio production on a Mac would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Gav

Norton AV Issues

2004-12-20 Thread Gavin Criddle
I'll add my two cents to this - I recently removed NAV from my girlfriends
XP PC (to upgrade to a new version of AV no less) and I had some serious
problems with this - Instantly lost all wireless network connectivity -
tried add and remove the network adapter - no luck. In the end, I had to
connect via Ethernet cable, give the machine a fixed IP, remove the Ethernet
cable and magically the wireless adapter worked again. And somehow, her
copy of Office was also corrupted, which needed a reinstall. Don't ask me -
was not impressed at all - neither was girlfriend (:

I personally use e-Trust antivirus for my XP PC - has a lot less overhead
than NAV, which I wouldn't recommend in a PC with less than 256mb of ram,
unless you like waiting 5/10 minutes for your PC to load up.

iBook vs Powerbook

2004-11-30 Thread Gavin Criddle
Hi everyone,

I've had the rather enjoyable experience of my faithful Compaq laptop giving
up the ghost and I'm in the market for a replacement.

While shopping around, I thought I might try a Mac laptop for something
different, as I don't need to rely on anything PC specific. It would also
make a pleasant replacement for the iMac g3 running OS X.

I'm basically after a simple portable PC that can be used for web browsing,
minor bit of graphic work and something that easy to hook up to a TV to play
DVD/VCD/mpeg/avi/real audio type files.

I'm tempted to go with a 12 powerbook G4 as these have a bit of extra grunt
over the iBook (and look cool) and are apparently more suited to connecting
to external monitors/TVs and watching videos -

However, would it be a better idea to go with a iBook and drop in some more
RAM and a faster hard drive and save some money, or would I notice a huge
performance increase with a Powerbook?

I'd upgrade whatever laptop I get up to at least 512MB of RAM.

One other question - my old Compaq (m700 piii) used to get quite warm and
I'd have to put a book/table on my lap as it got quite uncomfortable - has
anyone out there had any experiences with heat and the new G4 laptops? I
don't feel like wearing my asbestos trousers just to use a laptop.

I've tried to find some recent G4 pbook vs ibook reviews but haven't had
much luck.

Thanks for your help,

Gav
