If it were me, I would open the Mac, pull out the HD and break it up.

 Hi, I have an iMac 27? 2.8Ghz Corei7, (Late 2009).
This morning when I woke it from sleep it started emitting a
   continuous
beep sound, it was still showing screen pages and images, but with a
 black background.
I was unable to control anything. so I pressed the button to shut it
down and restarted it. When I restarted it all I had was a white
   screen
 and a continuous beeping sound.
I again turned it off and did an SMC reset, unplugging the power cord
and all the peripherals, turned it back on white screen and beeping.
I did a PRAM reset, turned it back on and had the same result. (There
was no grey screen and no start up sound).
As I was searching the internet to see what more I could possibly do,
   I
let it continue to beep in the background, after about 5 minutes, the
beeping stopped and now I have a flashing grey folder with a white
 question mark inside it.
Does anyone have any idea as to what else I may be able to do to fix
 the problem?
 Take care.

 Hi Matt
If it?s doing 3 beeps, then a pause, then 3 more beeps that?s an
   issue
 with the RAM.
But if it?s doing one long continuous beep than unfortunately that?s
   a
bit more servere - it generally means there is an issue with graphics
card, firmware issue or logic board/motherboard. And given it?s not
booting off a drive (which is what the folder icon means with a
flashing question mark - it can?t find the boot drive), then I?d say
unfortunately that iMac has most likely ?died?.
Given the age of it, you?d be hard pressed to get any parts or get it
fixed unfortunately. So only thing you could really do is take the
   hard
drive out (and hopefully it?s still ok with data on it), then either
transfer that to another iMac or put it into an external case to
   access
 the data.
But generally if an SMC, PRAM reset won?t start

   Thank you very much Daniel.

I hardly ever log in to [1]iCloud.com like that.

So I must have forgotten that procedure.

Anyway your assistance was very welcome.

Do you (or anyone else) know if she is OK?

   Hi Stephen
Generally if it’s the window you’re describing asking to use the “usual
AppleID” then the password it actually wants is your computer password.
(As it most likely has your AppleID password saved into a special
encrypted token), so it’s then asking you to enter your computer
password to “authorise” the computer to access that token.
So when it pops up, you just enter your computer password and it will
then log in as per normal.
It’s so you can use your own AppleID on your own computer, but if
someone else a) tried to access it that can’t - without knowing your
computer password or b) someone else can log in to their AppleID had
   they want to check something.
But your normal computer password should then take you to the step
without having to go the long way you mentioned.
   Kind regards

Thank you Peter … but I do not use safari to log in.

   I do so manually.

However I looked where you suggested in Safari.

But it tells me it has no password recorded.

 My only suggestion is:
If you’re logging with Safari, go to Safari > Settings > Passwords
   and
find the entry for your iCloud login. You can’t edit it, so delete it
using the — symbol at the botton of the passwords list. Close the
window and try logging in again. This time Keychain will ask again if
you want to save your login and password. Say OK and move on.
   Hopefully
this will fix the problem. Please note this will not necessarily work
for other browsers because they won’t work the same way with
   Keychain.

Now perhaps because you appear to be accessing your email via a web
browser you are experiencing the dual login dance (it sounds absurd
 to me).
You could consider using an email client, such as Mail, which comes
installed on every macintosh and iPhone.
Using these services I, my wife, and my children have experienced a
 frictionless transition.
Infact they don’t really know, or care, who is managing their email
 hosting.
All they care about is continuity of service, which they have
 experienced.
As for your assertion that third party companies, such as Medibank
etc. expect you to change your email address is a complete nonsense.
If that is what you have been told you, have been badly advised.
You just keep using your westnet/iinet/ address as if nothing has
 happened.

All is OK; except many companies eg Medibank assume that ALL iinet
customers MUST change their address. Our postman (the one that goes

 of
letters this household has received requesting us to let the company
know of our new email address. (I exaggerate a bit there!) What I
haven't worked out is are these companies responding to some emails
that bounced? or are they just assuming that all iinet customers
 need
 to change their address.
It is becoming a real problem; and very time consuming in trying to
contact each company to tell them my address is valid.
Whether or not the Messaging Company will be happy to have all these
iinet customers after the first year we will just have to wait and
see.. Along with how much they charge us.
 Best wishes all

 Hi All
An interesting piece of info was brought to my attention, and to be
honest I hadn’t seen it previously. - (definitely not an email from
iinet advising me of the change. Possibly an email will come later on
 perhaps?)
Apparently iinet/TPG and all it’s subsidiaries (Westnet, Internode
   etc)
have decided they are no longer going to host their customer’s
   emails.
(And new customers signing up are not given an @ISP email address).
They are moving it over to another business where they (the ISP) are
apparently paying for it for a year (up to Sept 2024 from what I can
gather), then after that if you then want to still keep using your
   @isp
email address, then you will have to pay for it. I haven’t seen any
plans as yet, but a few things I read said it could be “from $3.99
   per
email address per month). - though doesn’t show what the quota would
 be.
Some other people had said to budget about $60 a year to keep the
   email
 address.
The “notice” is on all the ISP websites, so for example on the main
iinet home page (and same for Westnet, TPG, Internode etc), all have
   a
 link to information about it.
 https://help.iinet.net.au/iinet-email-messaging-company
Even the “new” company taking over (The Messaging Company), website's
 is fairly sparse on information.
Definitely going to be a bit of wake up call for a lot of people. Who
may have an @isp address for 20+ years, then find if they want to
   keep
it they now have to pay. And I’m sure the internet plans won’t see a
price decrease for the money saved on not supplying/hosting email
addresses. Hey, I could be wrong,…but, well….time will tell.
(I have an @iinet address that I’ve had for about 22+ years that I’ve
been with them - not that I use it very much….but it’s there).
I know I have quite a lot of clients that use their @isp address, so
definitely going to be a change for a lot of people.
Another good reason to have a domain name I guess, or a “free” email
address like @iCloud.com, @gmail.com etc- then you can change ISPs
without having to tell everyone your email address has changed.
(As an aside, the price is about “normal” - as I looked at some of
   the
“email only” hosting plans I have for clients and a 10GB plan is $60
   a
 year per mailbox)
Definitely will be something to watch and see what happens with it.
Thought I’d post to the list as possibly others may not have seen or
 been aware of this. :)
 Kind regards
 Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] FTTP and ISPs…not Apple

   Hi Rosemary.

I have had ongoing issues with Telstra for the past 4 months.

Promise to fix issues but then fail to do so over and over again.

I am now on the verge of going to Aussie Broadband.

They get amazing reviews from customers.

One review site recently ranked them number 1 in Australia.

And 2 of my friends are with them and reckon they are the best.

Their price for my plan is the same as Telstra, so no cost advantage
   there.

But if I also take both our mobiles to them as well, that is way better
   priced.

Anyway just thought I would give some more feedback 

upgrades, they only have “some” ISP’s that seem to have early access to
this “faster NBN”. Whereas iinet/Westnet dont seem to be one of the
ISP’s with access to these upgrades. So when they look it up, in the
iinet/Westnet/TPG system, your area probably isn’t available to go
   faster on their network.
And NBNCo who do say the upgrade is available, in the “small print” -
   it’s only with some ISPs.
This is the same sort of thing I’ve found. Because I’m signed up to
NBNCo newsletter and info for my area, I got an email from saying
“faster internet is available” But iinet tell me,..no I can’t get
faster internet. So they’re both actually correct. As far as iinet are
concerned for their “access”,..they can’t offer anything faster. But if
I go with a different ISP,…then I can actually get faster.
I just found the email from them,..which says,..
   "Hi Daniel,
As you have registered for updates, we’d like to let you know that your
location may be able to upgrade to nbn® Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) if
you order an nbn powered plan based on nbnHome Fast or higher◊."
Then a button I click that says “Check out the list of participating
providers” - which loads this page
   https://www.nbnco.com.au/residential/upgrades/more-fibre/find-a-partici
   pating-provider
And Westnet and iinet (for whatever reason) aren’t listed as a
   participating provider.
For the time being I’ve stuck with iinet and use their NBN100 plan,….as
I’ve always felt a bit loyal to them to stay.
But with some of the newer ISP’s nothing offering better plans (and
sometimes better pricing), I’ve been weighing it up to change as well.
I was looking at the Aussie Broadband plans, as they tend to get good
reviews and always seem to be ranked quite high for reliability, cost,
   service etc.
(I wouldn’t touch dodo with a barge pole for another example,…lol. Had
some many customers been with them that had issues and left).
The one downside to moving obviously is losing your email address. But
I believe iinet and Westnet still offer an “email only” service. (I
know they previously had this service,..so I assume they still do.
Haven’t checked for a while). You used to be able to pay $25 a year to
keep your email address. So you then don’t have to go round and tell
everyone your new address and lose access to your email address.
(I don’t actually really use my @iinet address a lot, but I’d still
like to keep it if I did change.
I had considered going to the Aussie Broadband NBN1000 plan,. But it’s
another $50 a month. So I didn’t really go much further then look and
   dream. lol.
So as mentioned without knowing “exact” details, that would be my take
   on it anyway.
The best place I find to see what you’re able to get is the actual
NBNCo website. As they’re the ones who do or change the infrastructure.
So normally their information is most up to date.
If you go to https://www.nbnco.com.au - then put in your address to
check. It will advise you what you can get on your premises.
I also think some of the companies are wearing the cost of the “$0
upgrade cost to upgrade to fibre” - in the hope of perhaps getting new
customers and building their customer base. And perhaps iinet/Westnet
didn’t want to wear the extra cost of it. But I’m only guessing there -
   I could be completely wrong.
   Hope something there helps.
   Kind regards
   Daneil

When you say remove from the stack, can it be simply deleted from the

Hi Stephen, I've not had this problem but a couple of suggestions.
   Try
removing the WiFi network from the stack of WiFi networks in the

 reinstate it from fresh.
Ensure also that it sits as the first network in order of the stack
   of
networks if you have a stack of other WiFi networks.
When was the iMac last fully Shutdown?

Hi, I have just joined Telstra 5G to improve my NBN download speed
from an average of 27 Mbps.
I normally have 3 iMacs linked via wifi but since I have started
using the 5G I have been unable to link them up. I normal do so by
Finder>Go>Connect to Server and then using either the smb of afp
 favorite servers.
Also I have been unable to get my Brother HL-L2375DW to show up or
even to link that through any of the 3 iMacs. I have tried using the
Brother Instalation disc and it can?t find the printer over the
 wifi.
Anyone have any idea as to how I can get things linked up?
 Thanks
 Matt.

   Agreed Daniel.

I got an email about 2 months ago from Telstra offering me a
“concession” discount of $15 per phone per month.

I was on $45 for my phone and $45 for my wife’s phone (so $90 per
   month)

So this would take it down to $30 each.

Because I had trouble applying online I phoned them.

Each time i typed in my Pension Number it came to a halt.

They told me that “concession” only applied to customers on a Disabled
   Pension.

I pointed out that their email simply stated “concession”.

I am on an Aged Pension concession card.

I told them that I would be reporting this to the ACCC.

So they offered me the $15 discount for 12 months and they changed the
   wording in their promotion.

So when the 12 months is up I may be looking for an alternative.

   Hi Stephen
Yes when they come up, it’s sometimes worth looking at the “other
providers” that also use the Telstra network.
There are actually some good options out there. (We even looked at one
that was sold through Woolworthes on the Telstra network. They let you
choose a 10% discount off one shop per month. So we worked out for my
son’s mobile that we could pretty much get his plan “paid for free” by
having a large shop one week a month. The discount we saved from the
shopping more than paid for his monthly mobile account. :)
There are certainly a lot of them around now.
Telstra still have good coverage - but they seem to be back to their
old ways of increasing the plans constantly. It used to be $45 per
month for our plan - then it went to $55 per month. And now it’s just
gone up again to $58 per month.
I keep meaning to look at moving it, as to be honest for what they
offer compared to the other companies - there’s definitely better value
out there. And yet still uses the Telstra network which is one of the
better coverage networks out there. (In my opinion). Their support has
gotten a bit better too (since they moved it back from overseas),..so
that’s a bit of a plus as well.
But for two mobiles (which we use a lot), plus my son’s,..it all adds
   up.
So definitely worth considering some of the others I think. Well,..in
   my opinion anyway,..hehe.
A few google searches for things like “Best Mobile provider on Telstra
network” generally gives some good results - for things like the links
   I had before or
   [2]https://www.reviews.org/au/mobile/best-mobile-providers-on-the-telst
