Re: MAIL PROBLEMS

2019-08-26 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi Jewels

If Mail is definitely searching the correct Mailbox (as you can set it to
search just one folder, just the Inbox, or “all folders”) then it could be an
issue with the Spotlight search for it.
You can set it to “stop” searching in Spotlight, then after a few minutes
“Removing” it again to make it start searching.
Another option is to remove the Envelope files which forces it to reindex email
once it opens again.

With these things, you need to ensure you have a good backup before you start
(just incase something goes wrong, you can then go back to the “original” files.

To do the rebuild of Spotlight and the “stop/go” solution, have a look at this
link here -
https://support.4it.com.au/article/search-not-working-or-incomplete-results-in-osx-el-capitan-mac-mail/
(Section 2 covers it. And Section 3 covers the removal of envelope files).

If still no success, then you can force Spotlight to “Reset” itself a few
different ways, so this can sometimes help as well.
Again, ensure you have a good backup before you start. And you have to be
“slightly comfortable “ in using Terminal for parts of this.
https://www.boxaid.com/blog/search-not-working-mac-el-capitan/

But either of those should hopefully get it working for you. (Start with the
easy ones first, then work your way through to the later ones).

Hope that information helps.
Kind regards
Daniel

Hi Ronni

Thanks for your prompt reply !

1. Checked Mailbox (in the top menu), then to ‘Go to Favourite Mail Box; -
already selected as ‘in box’

2. Mail already includes bin, junk etc

3. I have synchronised, as suggested

4. Spotlight suggestions was ticked already.

When I put a name in the search box in mail, it appears to only search ‘mail
boxes’ and not the in box. When I click the magnifying glass in the mail
search bar, it comes up with ‘mailboxes’ as the only option. Mail has worked
perfectly for years but not now.

I’ll do a shut down and see if mail updates. I’ll get back to you either way.

Many thanks

Hi Jewels,

If a specific mailbox is selected in the Favourites bar, Mail searches only
that mailbox. To search all mailboxes instead, click All.
Mail may not be looking in the Bin or Junk mailboxes, or searching encrypted
messages. To include them when searching all mailboxes, choose Mail >
Preferences, click General, then select the options.
You may need to sync the mailboxes on your Mac with those on the mail server.
Choose Mailbox > Synchronise > [account].
The Mail folder (located in your home Library folder) may be excluded from
Spotlight searching. To check, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click
Spotlight, then click Privacy.

2017-05-31 Thread Peter Crisp
Ideally going to the Family environment for Mum is the best way to keep
separate Messages and FaceTime traffic. This is the preferred config by Apple
for your scenario. You can go back to a single Apple ID if you don’t like
‘Family' after setting it up - it’s not complicated to set up. But to do this
all family members need their own dedicated Apple ID. Also not a big deal. I
remember when my family of 5 was functioning quite adequately with one Apple ID
(before Family setup existed), it was possible to set Messages to not have
overlap of one family member to another where not preferred.

Just go to Settings.]>Messages>Send and Receive and intuitively select the
phone number/email address preferred for the device you’re holding. Do this
across all devices (iOS and OSX) to keep out of each others way. Repeat this in
FaceTime as well.

Having done the iMAP migration across all devices, you might as well do the
Family set up as well.

Pete.

Hi, Ronni,

It’s fixed! I tried all the suggestions with no luck, so started from scratch
with the router: discovered that it only had its own DNS number in the Network

to add the necessary. Now I can gather up the piles of hair lying around and
try to stick it back on. I can’t imagine how those numbers vanished away.

Thank you very much for your help!

In Mail, the 3 POP email accounts are shown as off-line, with exclamation
marks, and they cannot be put back on-line. In the Mailbox menu, I can toggle
back and forth between the on and off setting, but nothing happens. None of
 the account settings have changed.

Mail Connection Doctor says Mail is able to connect to the Internet and

NO... As long as nothing is selected (ticked) in the boxes above *.local,
169.254/16

Connection Doctor has indicated Mail can connect to the Internet as it shows
green in Connection Status.
But shows Red dots in the Account Status column.
So you need to Check your Incoming IMAP or POP and Outgoing SMTP email account
settings are correct as per your ISPs Mail Settings.

Check you don't have any third party firewall software, such as Little Snitch
blocking the necessary ports.

I presume you have already tried Quitting Mail and Restarting your Mac and then
opening Mail again?

Power Cycle your Network Modem Router Mac
Power all Off - Then first Power ON the Modem - then the Router - then your Mac.

Cheers,
Ronni

Mail problems

2011-01-02 Thread Frank Biundo
Hello All

I am having a major problem with Mail.
All of a sudden it is asking for a password to the mail server which it
rejects every time so I am unable to receive or send.

Luckily my iPhone still pushes the emails to me through MobileMe

I have gone into Mail/Ppreferences/Accounts and reset the password with no
luck.

It is an IMAP account that has been working without problems for nearly 4
yrs.

I have checked the forums and tried Resetting the Pram, Repairing
Permissions, Verifying the Disk and deleting all references to this password
in Keychain.

If anyone has had a similar problem to this and has resolved it I would very
much like to know your solution.

Many Thanks

Frank

Hi Frank,

I have had this problem intermittently on a very few occasions in past and in
my case the server was always down. Can you log into your server with a web
browser, say, and just check that the email account is functioning?

If the server is down, when the server comes back up everything should start to
function again.

Let the group know if this is not a problem with the server as others may see a
solution.

Cheers,
Carlo

Hi Frank,

deleting all references to this password in Keychain.

When you have deleted all references to this password in Keychain, did you do
it as per instructions below?

1. Quit Mail if it's running.

2. Open Keychain Access

3. Find the password that Mail is having a problem with and delete it, then
quit Keychain Access.

4. Restart Mail and it will ask for the Mail account's password again, type in
the password and tick
'Remember this password in my keychain'.

If you still experience the password problem, you might need to 'Repair'
Keychain.

To check keychains for problems:

1. Open Keychain Access, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications
folder.

2. Open Keychain Access

3. Choose Keychain Access Keychain First Aid.

4. Enter your user name and password.

5. Select Verify and click Start. Any problems found will be displayed.

If there are problems, select Repair, and then click Start.

Re: Bigpond mail problems: FW: Delivery Status Notification (Delay)

2008-04-22 Thread Geoffrey Barbara Maidment
Yes, I've also been having trouble with bigpond addresses again just lately.
I had a major problem around Christmas and also with some other domains.
Come to find out, some bright spark with our same IP address decided to send
out a massive quantity of spam, so everything was being rejected by major
domains around the worldbigpond, hotmail, comcast, etc. It took nearly
2 weeks to completely clear.

Don't know if that's what's happening now, but would guess not as I've only
a fraction of bounce-backs and only from bigpond this time.

Is anyone else experiencing bigpond email problems?

Yesterday I was getting an error message trying to retrieve mail from
bigpond (other non-bipgpond email accounts working fine). To keep an eye on
things I sent off a couple of test emails to my bigpond address.

Later the connection problem seemed to resolve and I no longer get error
messages trying to retrieve mail - however my test messages did not come
 back.

Then I got a Delivery Status Notification email - similar to the one below
but at less delivery attempts (5 from memory).

So I sent another (third) test message - and this went through OK and I
received it back very quickly - so I assumed everything was now OK (though I
wondered what happened to the first two test messages).

This morning when I fired up the email there were more Delivery Status
Notification emails (including one below) which correspond to both the first
 two test messages.

So I sent another test message - and so far I have not got that back either
(no Delivery Status Notifications for this one yet).

So... If I am reading the error message correctly:

 - the SMTP server at my ISP Internode is still trying to send my first two
test messages but bigpond is not accepting them?

 - although the message says temporary failure and not accepting messages
at this time a subsequent message (test 3) WAS accepted and got through (so
messages WERE being accepted at that time) but the original two were still
 not accepted.

 - although no Delivery Status Notification has been received as yet, a
fourth test email has still not been received despite a number of receive
attempts which seemed to connect without problem - so it seems bigpond is
still not accepting email to my bigpond address.

Is anyone else with bigpond experiencing similar problems. Anyone have any
 ideas?

By the way, just to clarify:

 - I used to have bigpond dial-up so have a bigpond email account.
 - I went to Broadband with Internode (so all outgoing emails are sent
through the Internode SMTP serverbut kept the cheapest bigpond dial-up
($25/year) to keep my bigpond email address.

Re: Bigpond mail problems: FW: Delivery Status Notification (Delay)

2008-04-22 Thread Malcolm McCallum
As a Westnet user I have watched the 'Bigpond problem' with interest.
i must admit I have wondered what the contract specifies. Surely there
must be someway that the user can demand that Bigpond delivers
legitimate emails delivered to them. Despite their size they are still
subject to the law of contract.

Re: Bigpond mail problems: FW: Delivery Status Notification (Delay)

2008-04-22 Thread David Nicholas

I've been having this problem since last Friday.

Once I identified what was going on I have been contacting bigpond
users by phone to send them important information.

In the long run this will be a PRO disaster for Bigpond. Many of its
users now know they are not getting important emails they need. Some
of them will shift. Serve Bigpond right.

Re: Bigpond mail problems: FW: Delivery Status Notification (Delay)

2008-04-22 Thread Neil Houghton
Thanks to all who replied - it's good to know you're not alone (of course,
it would be even better if it all just worked!).

This morning, my three outstanding test messages were all delivered - so I'm
guessing that Pigpond have finally got it working.

The trouble is, of course, that although the server I go through warned me:

Warning: message still undelivered after 4 hours
Will keep trying until message is 5 days old

many sending servers (newsletters etc) are probably not set to keep trying
that long - so those emails will just get lost. There can also be other
consequences:

Recently I had a recurring problem with the mail server at the hosting
provider for my personal domain (to be fair to them, I am currently on a
free service and they understandably prioritise paying customers). I then
noticed that I seemed to have stopped getting a number of Fairfax
newsletters which I had subscribed to using email addresses on that domain.
The provider assured me that there was now nothing stopping the newsletters
getting through and a check on the Fairfax site confirmed I was still
subscribed.

It then occurred to me that the newsletter server might have some automated
process which flags you as a problem or non-existent email address if too
many messages are undelivered - without actually unsubscribing you.

Just re-setting my subscriptions didn't seem to help, so I unsubscribed
myself from the lists which had stopped getting through and after waiting
for more than 24 hours (which Fairfax says it can take for changes to take
effect) I then re-subscribed to the lists. This seemed to do the trick and I
started receiving the newsletters again.

So just in case anyone with a Bigpond email address was missing newsletters
during the latest problems - and the newsletters don't re-start after the
problem is fixed - that is a possible explanation/solution.

Cheers

Yes, I am also having problems with bigpond addresses. Emails sent
are being returned but not until three days later. I have contacted
the intended recipients and they can offer no reason for the hiccup.

Some time ago there was a similar problem. At that time iinet advised
me that emails to bigpond addresses were being blocked and there was
nothing they could do about it. Eventually it righted itself but in
the meantime very frustrating. Particularly having to wait three days

Thanks to Merv Ronni for these threads - at least I know the problem is
not just with my account! One of the threads mentions Internode as being one

Not rectified though Ronni, I just got another Delivery Status Notification

bigpond (other non-bipgpond email accounts working fine). To keep
 an eye on
things I sent off a couple of test emails to my bigpond address.

Later the connection problem seemed to resolve and I no longer get
 error
messages trying to retrieve mail - however my test messages did not
 come
 back.

Then I got a Delivery Status Notification email - similar to the
 one below
but at less delivery attempts (5 from memory).

So I sent another (third) test message - and this went through OK
 and I
received it back very quickly - so I assumed everything was now OK
 (though I
wondered what happened to the first two test messages).

This morning when I fired up the email there were more Delivery
 Status
Notification emails (including one below) which correspond to both
 the first
 two test messages.

So I sent another test message - and so far I have not got that
 back either
(no Delivery Status Notifications for this one yet).

So... If I am reading the error message correctly:

 - the SMTP server at my ISP Internode is still trying to send my
 first two
test messages but bigpond is not accepting them?

 - although the message says temporary failure and not accepting
 messages
at this time a subsequent message (test 3) WAS accepted and got
 through (so
messages WERE being accepted at that time) but the original two
 were still
 not accepted.

 - although no Delivery Status Notification has been received as
 yet, a
fourth test email has still not been received despite a number of
 receive
attempts which seemed to connect without problem - so it seems
 bigpond is
still not accepting email to my bigpond address.

Is anyone else with bigpond experiencing similar problems. Anyone
 have any
 ideas?

By the way, just to clarify:

 - I used to have bigpond dial-up so have a bigpond email account.
 - I went to Broadband with Internode (so all outgoing emails are sent
through the Internode SMTP serverbut kept the cheapest bigpond dial-
 up
($25/year) to keep my bigpond email address.

 Cheers

Re: Help! (Westnet mail problems and SMTP server mailr.westnet.com.au)

2006-07-19 Thread Derek Y-E

According to iiNet's support web page,

iiNet? ;-)

Oops, sorry, I'd just been dealing with iiNet support :-)

According to Westnet's Global Roaming page
http://www.westnet.com.au/internet/additional/global.aspx

Mac might need to be using the iPass Dial Wizard.
The iPass Dial Wizard appears to be for dial-up access from locations
other than WA or Aus?

iPass is for outside Australia -- you can use your Westnet dial-up
Australia wide, through their single telephone number.

Isn't Mac trying to gain access from Internet Cafes? Won't these
generally be on broadband?
If he is going through a cafe's broadband shouldn't he be using
mail.westnet.com.au?

Each different ISP will have a different SMTP server associated with
it. So with each location that Malcolm drives the Motor Home to in
Canada, he'll most likely need to use a few different SMTP servers.

Westnet seems to be saying that mailr.westnet.com.au is only for use
through the iPass software:

Oh yes, a good point, you're correct. It does appear to work for
normal senders of Mail too though. YMMV.

I am on WN broadband and mailr.westnet.com.au doesn't respond to any
pings, only mail.westnet.com.au
does.

Don't bother trying to ping common addresses, or to use this as a
gauge of whether an address is alive or not. You're wasting your
time, as it's not a true representation as to whether the server is
alive or not. Most ISPs turn off ping responses from their common
servers (from example DNS servers, many Mail servers etc.). I asked
iiNet about this practice a few years ago, and they gave a few
responses. They said they either don't like the extra traffic (=
performance hit), or their firewall blocks the pings (helps reduce
attacks if people can't see your server easily), or they don't like
to advertise their server is available to use as a test to see if
it's alive. All stands to good reason.

So, pinging is a less than reliable measure these days. Perhaps
instead, you could try telnetting to the server on say port 25, and
sending a few raw SMTP commands instead. (There are web pages
dedicated to this). Or, do a DNS lookup (local or web-based), which
might provide some info as to it's alive status.

I cant see why Westnet themselves haven't sorted this out for Mac.
One long-distance call to support should fix this I reckon.

The problem doesn't affect Westnet customers in general, it affects
ALL mobile users. Malcolm has already been on the right track, which
he described as grabbing the domain part of local email address of
the service provider his particular location has been using. While
not full-proof, he's on the right path. It's just some ISP's might
have an email address of [EMAIL PROTECTED], and their SMTP
address might be smtp.superisp.com.au, and others might use
mail.superisp.com.au. It will vary each time Malcolm changes ISP or
location. :-)

Dare I ask; what is wrong with using Westnet's webmail to access your
emails while abroad?

Malcolm could use Westnet's webmail; this avoids the SMTP changing
routine. BUT I'm sure it's down to the convenience of being able to
use Malcolm's default Mail application, without having to make too
many changes to his routine, access to his address book etc.

When I'm on the road, I much prefer to use my default Mail app where
possible, so that I have easy access and tracking to previous threads
of messages etc. :-). But if my laptop is not convenient, or if I
can't work out the SMTP address of a particular service provider, or
similar, I'll use my particular webmail client instead.

Hope this info helps,
Cheers,
Derek

Hi WAMUG folks.

According to iiNet's support web page, the correct SMTP mail server
setting is in fact mailr.westnet.com.au
(not mail.westnet.com.au). Mail.westnet.com.au may still work... I
recall Westnet changed this a little while ago...

Mail problems resurface

2006-03-22 Thread Pat Scott
Two weeks ago I asked the list for help tracking down the reason for
multiple, apparently random e-mail bounces. My ISP, iiNet, was
suspected, and later the Mail app. There were several helpful
suggestions - thanks.

However, the bouncing is continuing, and now it appears my husband is
experiencing something similar: he uses Mail with Tiger, which is set
to remove downloaded e-mails from the server, and iiNet as an ISP but
gets his mail from a different server - Murdoch University. Using
the hint from Peter Hinchliffe about Get Info on the shortcuts menu,
he discovered a collection of e-mails still on the server that had
never been delivered to his desktop. They were spread over a span
from early Feb. to the present. We both receive lots of e-mails, so
didn't notice any shortage.

I have spoken to iiNet support - they tried sending e-mails to me and
found no problem, which emphasises the random nature of the occurrences.

Any thoughts or insights into what is happening will be most
gratefully received.

Cheers,
 Pat

Hi All,

Well I tried cranking up Outlook for OS9 this morning and filled in my
account details and it works perfectly, so it is definitely something
with iMail (mail.app or whatever).

Is there a way that I can reinstall Mail without reinstalling
everything?

Cheers,

Hi Neil - I've recieved the same (or similar) problems on and off for about 3-
4 weeks. I think it's a general Telstra issue, not necessarily mac related. I'm
running a G4 466 with 10.2.4 and Apple's Mail app on a Telstra dialup plan.

Initially, I thought it was perhaps the fault of 10.2.4.

No argument from me. However it's equivalent to a 1.0 release, and
my point was that it is still immature, regardless of whether its
feature set is appropriate to any given group of users.

This is true. To be quite honest, the entire OS is a 1.0 release. The bug
list is a mile long, and the feature request list is even longer.

Please don't forget that OS9 has had 15 years to get to where it is now. OSX
(In it's current form) has only had about 2 or 3 years of really solid work.
There are some VERY exciting things coming. It just takes time.

OS-X and Mail problems... - HELP...

2001-10-31 Thread Goodall-Smith
Hi again,

Thanks to those for there help in getting my email addresses transferred

I am however baffled as to why I have the problem in Mail on OS-X where
when I download my mail from the server that the mail remains on the
server even though I have the preference set to delete it once I have
downloaded my emails... So every time I get new mail all the same old
emails come flowing back again and again. I can go the iinet via the
web and delete from the server via their web page but I don't want to
have to keep doing it this way...

I have tried everything I can think of over the past couple of days
including deleting preferences and re-inputting them. Changing various
settings in relation to mail and internet. Deleting my account in Mail
and putting in a new one. Restarting many many times throughout this
process.

I also checked with iinet who checked and tested my account out fully
while I was on the phone to them and all is working as it should from
their end...

This problem does not occur with Netscape Communicator using OS-9... But
I REALLY don't want to go backwards now I am using OS-X (and enjoying it
so far)

PLEASE - If anyone has any suggestions of what I can try, I would be
most grateful

Signed,

Desperate (Phil)
