Hi Peter

You say you're using a different font. Did you try resetting it back to the
default font, or even a different font to see if that makes a difference?
If you're using the same font on both laptop and iMac, then it would be
same.
I've also seen some problems where a font corrupts and does some weird
things on certain sites but works fine on other sites.
By removing all the fonts and putting them back in in small lots, we found
the corruption/conflict and it all worked properly again.
Worth a try? :o) (When you have time,..hehe.) :o)

See how you go with that.

Fwd: Safari 4

2009-06-10 Thread Kyle Kreusch
Hi, Ronni and all

Another new change in the public release is that browser crashes caused by
plug-ins like Flash are now sandboxed. If Flash or Shockwave crash, only that
plug-in will be affected. The page that it's on will continue to function,
and you can reactivate the plug-in by reloading the page.

Unfortunately this feature is only available in Snow Leopard's Version
of Safari 4.

You don't have any plugins that might be interfering?
Do you have plenty of RAM?
Could it be your Network, have you tried on another Network?

I have read this regarding Safari 4:

• If your computer has less than 1GB of RAM, Safari fails to cache
items larger than 104,857 bytes.
* If your computer has more than 1GB of RAM, Safari fails to cache
items larger than 209,715 bytes.
* JPEGs, at least, are temporarily cached in RAM. Whew. But upon
browser restart, you’ll see they didn’t make it to the disk cache,
so you have to get them again.
* Other objects, like SWFs or videos, though, don’t even make it to
the RAM cache, let alone disk. Load the same SWF back-to-back, and
you’ve just transferred the bytes twice. Ugh.

I'm sure it's not a RAM issue. I have 3Gb in my iMac and 2Gb in my
Macbook Pro. I'm certain it is a CSS rendering issue, and it could be
something to do with font size. According to to the information in the
Web Inspector, the font size of the elements containing the iPhone
images is 11 pt, but I can't find the type face specs. I have set the
default font for Safari to be Tahoma 12, but the Apple page seems to
be displayed in something else.

The fact that I get the same thing happening on both the iMac and the

I'm certain it is a CSS rendering issue, and it could
be something to do with font size. According to to the information
in the Web Inspector, the font size of the elements containing the
iPhone images is 11 pt, but I can't find the type face specs. I have
set the default font for Safari to be Tahoma 12, but the Apple page
seems to be displayed in something else.

The fact that I get the same thing happening on both the iMac and
the Macbook Pro, and I have identical settings for Safari on both,
tends to support this line of thinking.

Hi Peter,

If it is a CSS rendering issue, why does the page load perfectly on my
MacBook Pro?

There is an article here referring to a Bug The issue seems to be a
CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) problem.

http://www.macdiscussion.com/article_show.php3?article_id_var=273

Just for the experiment ... have you tried Disabling JavaScript in
Safari preferences - Security (or under the Develop Menu) just to see
if it corrects the page.
However, many sites require javascript, so you will have to Enable
it again!

The telling thing is that as the page loads the placement of the
iPhone elements starts out correctly, but changes at the last moment.
This smacks of CSS, not Javascript. I am prepared to accept that there
may be some plugin responsible, but that particular process of

Re: Safari 4

2009-06-09 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Ruben,

Firstly it is FAST ... really fast on an Intel MacBook Pro!
Safari 4.0 has almost 50 security fixes, both in the browser and
WebKit. Lots of potential security holes plugged.

One major change to the interface from the beta involves tabs. In the
beta, Apple experimented with a Chrome-style tabs-on-top that it has
abandoned in the public release. The font for the tabs was often hard
to read, and made Safari look excessively like Chrome. The new tab
style now looks much like the old tab style.

Cover Flow is now available as a graphic way to browse your bookmarks
and history, however, if you've got a somewhat older computer you
still won't be able to use any of these graphics improvements.

Another new change in the public release is that browser crashes
caused by plug-ins like Flash are now sandboxed. If Flash or Shockwave
crash, only that plug-in will be affected. The page that it's on will
continue to function, and you can reactivate the plug-in by reloading
the page.

Safari 4 is also the first non-beta browser to fully complete the
Acid3 Web standards compliance test. http://acid3.acidtests.org/

The URL bar does feature smart surfing, but only for including your
history and bookmarks--much like Internet Explorer. Chrome and Firefox
remain the only browsers to default to Google's feeling lucky style
of searching from the location bar.

There are system files in the OS X System folders changed by the
Safari 4 install (that's why there is a restart of the computer).

Apple's big claim with Safari is that it's the fastest browser on the
market, and from latest results around the Internet ... Apple just
might be correct.

150 features
http://www.apple.com/safari/features.html

I should perhaps mention that latest version of Safari 4 is different
in some respects than Safari 4 Beta.
There is no uninstaller. The only way you can revert back to Safari 4
beta version either using a Time Machine backup, or recent backup, or
reinstalling the OS using an Archive Install.

But I don't think you will want to after using the new release of
Safari 4.

I have not experienced any problems since installing Safari 4.
If your computer is up to date and you are not experiencing any
problems, everything is in good working order, you should be right.

The other thing to check is, if you use any add on plugins in Safari
make sure you have the latest updates of them and that they are
compatible with Safari 4.
The problems people have had seem to be related to incompatible
plugins / add ons.

Cheers,
Ronni

Likewisw on my iMac 24. The layout of the screen looks a bit weird,
though, with the two iPhones at the top of the centre panel,
arranged one above the other, and the rest below them. Looks the
same both on my iMac and my Macbook Pro, so I guess it's
intentional. Just looks Wrong. Is this everyone's experience?

Hi Peter,

On my screen the iPhones are beside each other, not one above the

Well, yours certainly does look like mine ;-)

I have heard of this happening in earlier version of Safari.

Whew. But upon
browser restart, you’ll see they didn’t make it to the disk cache, so
you have to get them again.
* Other objects, like SWFs or videos, though, don’t even make it to
the RAM cache, let alone disk. Load the same SWF back-to-back, and
you’ve just transferred the bytes twice. Ugh.

Hello Jennifer,

Are you currently using Safari 3? If so, make sure all security
updates etc are installed, then download Safari 4

http://www.apple.com/safari/what-is.html

The downloaded disk image of Safari 4 includes an uninstaller. Keep a

All your settings, bookmarks etc will be preserved.

I'll leave Java turned on and check again with clamXav maybe next
week and see what's going on - if anything.

That's sneaky, embedding viruses in a website.

Interestingly I searched VersionTracker for another virus checker to

My Mac, Apple Mail, Safari, 4 Worms and even 4 Trojans: Yikes!

2006-03-25 Thread Reg Whitely

Hi All WAMUGgers

I've just run ClamXav Virus Checker http://www.clamxav.com/ on my
PowerBook and it tells me I have 8 files with viruses, all in my
User/Library.

I'm running OS X 10.4.5.

Four are in Apple Mail mailboxes, and ClamXav suggests I sort through
the mail messages and delete any suspicious ones. I've done that now
- a timely purge indeed and surely needed anyway. I've also rebuilt
the mailboxes. Running ClamXav a second time it tells me I still have
the infected files. That is weird because two of the mailboxes -
Deleted Messages and Junk have nothing in them. Could the boxes
themselves be carrying the virus? Is it safe to leave them there as
presumably they won't affect the Mac anyway? Should I delete the
boxes? If I do that, can I successfully create new ones to take their
places? That seems a bit drastic, like cutting off a leg then sewing
a new one on again.

Here are the mailbox details from ClamXav log:
/Users/rwhitely/Library/Mail/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/Deleted
Messages.mbox/mbox: Worm.Mydoom.M FOUND
/Users/rwhitely/Library/Mail/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/

mbox: Worm.Mydoom.M FOUND
/Users/rwhitely/Library/Mail/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/Sent
Messages.mbox/mbox: Worm.Mydoom.M FOUND

The other four were in .zip files in User/Library/Caches/Java Applets/
cache/javapi/v1.0/jar
I have absolutely no idea what they are except to say that there are
a lot more .zip and similar .idx files (eg:
ar.jar-25da0aca-4df682f8.idx)

I've taken the four offending files out and put in a folder on the
desktop. Is it safe to delete them? what do they do anyway?

Here are the offending files as listed in the log:
/Users/rwhitely/Library/Caches/Java Applets/cache/javapi/v1.0/jar/

reveals that it was discovered on 2004-07-06, is Java/ClassLoader.
24564 and is Virus/Infected File with Blue Status:

Blue – Low
This is the most common threat type. Essentially the virus has been
identified in the wild and does very little damage or is not capable
of spreading by itself. Many threats that fall into this category are
Trojans, Macro Viruses, or Spyware. They are easily contained and
removed from an infected system. It is always a good idea to keep
your definitions up to date to prevent these minor inconveniences
from happening to you. Threats of this type may also extract personal
information so they should still be taken seriously.

Another (http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojclsldrd.html)

reviews. From its own website it is defined as ClamXav is a free
virus checker for Mac OS X. It uses the tried, tested and very
popular ClamAV open source antivirus engine as a back end.
www.clamxav.com/

It doesn't claim to rid the virus, just to alert you to it and give
advice on its removal. That's why I'm asking for advice.

There are about 142 000 viruses, trojans, worms etc for Windows but
only about 4 for Mac OS X, so I consider I'm generally safe too, as
you do, but not necessarily my friends and colleagues who use
Windows. These two viruses that ClamXav has found on my PowerBook
have the potential to infect and destroy their computers. No matter
what I might personally think about Windows, I do not wish to destroy
their computers. That would be a gross breach of trust. Just imagine
if you needed to check your Maced email using a friend's Windows PC
(I think of my daughter here, who has such a beast, and whose
computer I sometimes need to use). In addition I have VirtualPC with
Win XP and all Microsoft Office installed on my PowerBook so I could
destroy that drive simply by transferring a file through the shared
drive.

Your comment reminds me of this:
I owned VWs for many years, being a very active member of the VW Club
of WA in my youth. That's going back to the late 1960s to the mid '70s.
We did some serious state rally driving in those little bug-shaped,
rear engined beasts - 100mph in a tricked up rally beetle through the
West Aussie jarrah and karri forests actually wasn't for the feint
hearted. However, an air cooled VW motor, running at full stress in
the WA heat did tend to heat up a lot, somewhat understated, even
with bigger oil coolers.

Our best prevention? Disconnect the oil pressure warning light and
gauges. We knew whenever we stopped at the end of a special stage
that the light would flash on and off, or even stay on, and the gauge
would sit on 0psi, as the engine temp was *HOT* and the oil was thin!
By disconnecting the lights and gauges we weren't distracted!

Somehow our engines survived. I'm not sure how. Ignorance was bliss.

May your tail always hang out!

Hi Reg,

I read your email with great interest. I too had VWs for many years and
still miss those reliable air-cooled engines! In fact I sold my last VW in
2002 and did not have the courage to see the buyer take my trusted Camper
Van leave my drive-way.

I have also come to the conclusion that Virex, good as it was in the past,
has not kept with the times. Although I have been able to update my Virex
dat files, I now have ClaxXav and use it as my prime anti-viral application.

Sorry, but cannot advise you with regards to the infected files and folders.
My knowledge in this field is very limited. I hope someone will be able to
give you some appropriate advice.

Oh, yes it is a good idea to ensure one's outgoing mail is clean.

All the best and kind regards,

Philippe

 Hi Lara

Thank you for your response. Yes, there are reasons, and I'm not
paranoid. I'm asking for advice to get rid of these things. Below
I've copied a response to another respondee explaining my reasons.

I won't advise you; my preferred method of not agonising about Windows
malware in deleted mailboxes and caches is not to run a Windows-
 malware
 detector. YMMV.
