 Hello John,

The simplest way to open DVD Player in MacOS Mojave 10.4 is through
 Spotlight:

Hit Command + Spacebar to bring up Spotlight (or click the little
Spotlight icon in the upper right corner of the screen) and search for
“DVD Player”, then hit Return / Enter to launch it.
DVD Player will launch and you’re ready to use it to watch and play DVD
video from a disc as usual.

Don’t bother trying to locate it John. Launch it with Spotlight as recommended,
then once it has launched, right- (control-) click its icon in the dock. Choose
Options from the popup menu followed by “Keep in dock”. Much easier.

While I’m here I may as well also include.
If you use DVD Player App often: Use Spotlight to easy locate it.

Hi Severin,

Apple's DVD Player application only works with an internal optical drive or
‘Apple's external SuperDrive’.
You can physically remove the DVD Player but it will only install again in an
update.

Re: DVD player

2017-10-30 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi Severin

You can turn off DVD Auto launch as follows -
Open DVD Player. Go to the DVD Player menu then Preferences.
Under the Player tab, where it says “When a disc is inserted” un-tick “start
playing disc”.
It used to be a setting you could change in System Preferences, but it’s
generally removed on my systems with no DVD player.

But that should stop it for you.

Try that and see how you go.

Almost but not quite!
I have successfully modified a copy of the file but on trying to paste
the"saved as" copy back over the original I get the circe with the line through
symbol. Same with the ready patched file downloaded. I suspect it is an El
Capitan security thing and requires Terminal commands to achieve what I want to
do. The documentation you sent was good up to Yosemite but no statement

Re: DVD Player

2015-12-16 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Severin,

The Code appears to be identical to Yosemite, but I did suspected this would
possibly occur.
As I mentioned previously the 'System Integrity protection… the added security
in El Capitan.
Protecting people from making errors when making any changes to system files,
which could damage the OS.

So you would either require to the Apple USB SuperDrive
 (like I
have for my MBA) which DVD Player recognises and it works very well. Not that
I’ve used it much at all as I tend to use my MBP for any DVD work.
Cheers,

Ronni

Re: DVD Player

2015-12-15 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi again Severin,

I’ve managed to locate a ‘lost’ folder in my backups with the instructions how
to change the DVD player option from looking at an Internal optical drive to a
External optical drive - Apple Inc had encoded a check into OS X to verify
whether the attached USB optical drive is in fact an Apple USB SuperDrive. If
not, ‘tell the user that DVD Player will not play nice’ which translated in OS
X speak is - “A valid DVD drive could not be found [-70012]”.

"How to Get An External Optical Drive Working With DVD Player Application”.
As I already had an Apple USB SuperDrive before purchasing my MacBook Air, I
did not need to use the instructions how to modify the DVDPlayback framework.
If you do want to give it a try to modify the DVDPlayback framework so DVD
Player 'will/might' recognise your external DVD player.
I can email you the documentation off-list.
Just make sure before you do any modification, you backup(copy) your existing
DVDPlayback framework file according to the instructions in the documentation.

In the Update 25 July 2015 - you can download an already modified version of
the DVDPlayback framework file.
which already has Replaced all the words “internal” with “external” within the
Hexadecimal language DVDPlayback framework file.

If you find it doesn’t work for your external DVD player, just replace the
modified file by placing the unmodified file you ‘previously Saved’ onto the
same location and let it overwrite the modified file.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: DVD Player

2015-12-14 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Severin,

I’m not having any trouble playing DVD discs in OS X El Capitan 10.11.2 DVD
Player.

Have you tired playing the DVD with VLC.app (Media Player)?

1. Insert the DVD - then select (click once highlight) the DVD icon when it
appears on the Desktop

2. Open VLC.app (if you don’t already have it open)

3. In the VLC Menu - Go to “File > Open Disc”
Select “Disc” button - then click Open (which will be blue)

If still no success, we need more details. Are you receiving any error message?
What format is the disc - UDF (Universal Disk Format)?
What video format is the media file on the disc?

Cheers,
Ronni

Yes Severin,
There used to be a work around by replace the dvdplayback.framework file,

A penny has just dropped - maybe?
In Yosemite days I converted my iMac to a Fusion Drive (a brilliant move!) but
this required removal of the DVD drive for installation of the SSD. Afterwards
there was still no problem playing DVDs with DVD player on plugged in external
drives.
This is no longer the case and DVD drive opens with the message
A valid DVD drive could not be found (-70012)
I suspect this is the problem.

Re: DVD player - region free?

 Hi All

A request from my daughter travelling in Sweden.
Is there any way to make a DVD player on her MacBook Pro region free?

 Thanks in advance

Hi Marlene,

No way legally to do this. Apple Support page states you can only change the
DVD region five times and then you are stuck with your last choice. And that's
it.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DVDPlayer/5.2/en/26880.html
Important:You can set the region code for your DVD drive only five times
(including the original setting). The fifth time you change the code, it will
be permanently set.

There are ways of Flashing the Firmwareto RPC-1, (region free), but I would
NEVER give instructions or recommend anyone doing this.

If she only uses Region 0 DVDs (which have no region code), she is fine.

An alternate sometimes, can be a video player like VLC that doesn't check the
region code. BUT, Beware that your drive's firmware still triggers the OS
counter, which may then trigger a firmware setting change on your drive.
Its hit and miss on whether or not this will happen, with some Macs allowing
any region movie to be viewed in VLC without triggering a change, and others
triggering a change and potentially locking you out of future switches when you
hit the limit.

Cheers,
Ronni

So at a guess this may be a type of CD/DVD for which 10.5.6 does not
provide a driver .

Mactracker shows only 1 Superdrive on Original Mac , the second would
therefor be an add on .

You will need to open the case and establish the Make and model of the
not working unit,

then go to the maker support download site to search for a driver.

I am assuming you did not instal it and therefor do not have the
original CD that came with the unit .

If you have trouble finding the right driver to download ,
mail back with the info and we can look for you .

Hi Frank,

What Region Code is the DVD?
If it's a Region Code your Computer will not read,
try playing the DVD with VLC (Video Lan Client)

It doesn't care about regions.

You can try this, and if it works - fine. Be prepared, though, to have
to do a clean install with archive, and re-apply whatever updates you
need to get back to 10.3.9.

I haven't had to call on the services of Pacifist very often, but when
I have used it, the results have been mixed.

Re: DVD player to view on G3 powerbook?

2003-09-03 Thread Martin Hill

It's been a while since I last used my old Lombard for outputting to a TV.

To get any Mac to display on a TV (if it is a model with the option
(which the Lombard is)), you need to plug the Mac into the video-out
destination first and then either wake up or turn on the Mac. If it
is connected properly, the Mac will sense an external monitor and
then display on the device. As the Lombard supports extended desktop
mode, you should also get the TV appearing as an extra screen in the
Monitors control Panel (under the Arrange section). You will also
then get extra resolutions available to you for that screen such as
PAL 640x480 or NTSC 800 x 600 etc.

Make sure you choose something like PAL 640 x 480 first - you may
also get the option to do overscan or underscan try either of those.

Are you plugged straight into the composite video-in plug on the TV
(little yellow RCA plug) or into a VCR which then goes into the TV?
You need to make sure the VCR and/or TV are set to receive video on
whatever channel it is plugged into (AV1 or AV2 or similar)

OK lets assume that this is I have a DVD player in my PowerBook and
I want to play them through to my external screen device (TV all in
one entertainment system etc etc)

Sout = S out = S-Video out = this is a video out output that uses
S-Video (mini DIN) plug

Video: S-out you use the supplied (or if lost purchased from dick
smith tandy) Svideo to RCA video adaptor
Audio: stereo minipin audio jack to RCA (stereo if external supports
it mono otherwise)

plug'em in, turn on TV or external device, turn on computer. by
default S-vido out mirrors the main screen but you can arrange it
just like a standard monitor (from recollection)...
Note that you can't run it through a VCR recorder first - IT must go
directly to the TV/ display device (else you get the Macrovision
Protection effect - this may be the squigly lines your talking
about). - If you have an all in one TV/VCR you'll probably find your
stuck unless you rip the DVD to hard disk with a program that removes
the Macrovision protection and then play the ripped files through the
unit - still don't expect anything special quality wise.

Ha! As Rod has picked up (thanks Rod) I've just re-read your post
Robert, and I now realise you actually seem to want to view DVDs
played on your DVD player on your PowerBook's screen - is that
correct?!

If so, then as you've probably now guessed, the S-Video plug on the
back of your Powerbook is for going in the other direction. If you
want to capture video INTO your powerbook, you'd need a video capture
device such as:

- the Capsure PC-card video-in device
- a USB video-in device like the XLR8 Interview
Both of which will only capture at a maximum resolution of around 384 x 288

As the Lombard doesn't have a Firewire port, you can't use that
option unless you get a Firewire PC card (and analog-firewire
converter like the Canopus ADVC).

I've used all of the options above to capture video in the past with
my old Lombard but they all cost.
