Yes, you're missing the third example I gave: "eBay", which I expanded upon
in a subsequent post :

  > The use of those descriptions is for sub-headings, which naturally begin
with a capital, with the exception of stylisations like "eBay" and scientific
terms like "nCov-19".

There is a non-trivial and unbounded set of words that always begin with a
lower-case letter in English. So if you try to "trivially convert prose
fragment case to the case you desire (by upper-casing the first letter)" you
come unstuck in an undefinable number of cases. Why not store the description
in title case as is recommended for enwiki short descriptions?

Compared to the 14,986,105 entries with an English label but no English
description. How does the bot-added English description "Wikimedia list
article" help anyone create a label for Q1831702? or the description
"scientific article (publication date: June 2006)" help anyone create a label
for Q28242786?

I remember that discussion titled "User instructions in descriptions are
harmful" but I don't see how anybody could think that Siri (a speech-based
virtual assistant) is an example of an application that shows

  set
fundamental mathematical concept related to the notions of belonging or
inclusion

After all, Wikidata description with first letter converted to uppercase is
used is used in enwiki mobile searches and the Wikipedia App unless we have
created a local short description, as I explained earlier, but those don't use
the Wikidata label.

Nobody uses the Wikidata description with labels, and you're confusing "users
of Wikidata" with people reading an page on Wikidata. That's not how Wikidata
is used, nor how it was meant to be used.

The first example is twice as long as it needs to be to perform a useful
purpose. The second one could use "USA state" without losing any meaning at
all. These are being used as //short// descriptions, not essays.

Descriptions are made in exactly the same languages as labels are. I've been
working with Wikidata since it began, and in all that time, I've never seen an
entry with a description in English, but no label in English. Can you point to
a single example of that happening?

Wikidata is not an application, so I'm not sure of the value of its
expectations., I'm unaware of any application that adds the description after
the label in the way you describe, Perhaps you can name some examples?

Otherwise the principal use of Wikidata descriptions is on the mobile
platforms for the 6 million+ articles on the English Wikipedia, plus the
millions of other articles in other language Wikipedias. The use of those
descriptions is for sub-headings, which naturally begin with a capital, with
the exception of stylisations like "eBay" and scientific terms like "nCov-19".

When used to help searches on mobile, short descriptions are designed to
distinguish items with similar titles as quickly as possible. That allows users
to see a list of matching articles and pick the one they want without having to
type the entire search term. For example, you should only need to type the
first few characters of "Benzopyrene" before you see

  (+)-Benzo(a)pyrene-7,8-dihydrodiol-9,10-epoxide
Cancer-causing agent derived from tobacco smoke

which allows you pick the particular carcinogenic chemical derived from
smoke, rather than any other "Benzo-" chemical.

You don't need a short description to distinguish `Georgia (country)` from
`Georgia (U.S. state)` or any of the other 30+ similar articles when searching,
so neither the local short description nor the Wikidata description is needed
in that case.

The Wikidata short description for "set" (Q36161) is currently "fundamental
mathematical concept related to the notions of belonging or inclusion". That is
unnecessarily wordy and long for a search using a mobile phone screen, so it's
fortunate that the article is titled "Set (mathematics)" and that is easily
enough to distinguish the article from any of the other 50+ articles listed on
the disambiguation page. On the Wikipedia App, you see:

  Set (mathematics)
Fundamental mathematical concept related to the notions of belonging or
inclusion

Can anybody give an example of a user who would find that lengthy sub-title
useful? Particularly when you look at the opening sentence of the lead.

An insistence that the Wikidata description has to be a stand-alone
description of the entity is another reason why Wikidata descriptions are often
unsuitable to do the job of short descriptions on Wikipedias.

In Wikidata it is excepted that the description can be added after label (or
usually title) in parentheses, e.g. machine translation (sub-field of
computational linguistics).

Wikidata description is also designed to disambiguate items with the same or
similar labels, so that no two items have same label and same description (and
labels should not include disambiguation information). This is not the case of
Wikipedia as no two article have same title and disambiguation is handled by
article name. for example Georgia (country), in this case the "country" served
the disambiguation purpose, similar to Wikidata description. Note Wikidata
description should also be understandable independently, so "mathematics" is
not a good description for "Set (mathematics)".

The advice given to editors adding short descriptions on enwiki is to use the
same case as would be used in article titles, e.g. "American politician",
"Largest city in England", "eBay Founder". Those are the correct case to use on
any sub-heading such the search on mobile and the sub-heading on the Wikipedia
App. It is unfortunate that Wikidata chose to use prose fragment case, as that
never gets used in any application that I'm aware of.

Editors will of course make mistakes, on either project, so differences in
capitalisation won't be an argument in favour of using either project as the
central repository.

Because enwiki editors have found an extra use for the short description, as
an annotation for links (in //See also// sections, for example), there will be
valid examples of short descriptions that contain wikimarkup, usually a link.
It's fairly straightforward to strip wikimarkup from any text, so that
shouldn't be a barrier to importing short descriptions into Wikidata, where the
markup would serve no purpose.

Description are designated short enough to be uncopyrightable. Any long
description (that is copyright eligible) should be rewritten.

Previously I imported (as one-off task) ~11 short descriptions to
Wikidata, and I found the short descriptions have such problems: 1.
inconsistent use of capitalization of first character; 2. descriptions in title
case (such as "Largest City in United States", where "city" should be in lower
case); 3. wiki markup in description. in addition, a few short descriptions
generated by templates does not make sense.

Well it didn't seem to cause a problem for all of the statements imported
from the various Wikipedias.

It also doesn't seem to cause a problem for anybody using the enwiki 'short
description helper', which silently and invisibly adds a Wikidata description
whenever the enwiki short description is added. I'm not seeing any difference
in licensing issues between that and the proposed updating bot.

Wikidata remains unsuitable as a repository for article descriptions because
of (1) its tardy response to vandalism of the description field; (2) the
inability of a mechanism to validate the description field; (3) the lack of a
mature and nuanced BLP policy that would prevent subtle but serious breaches of
enwiki policies on living persons.

That does cause a problem. @RexxS any thoughts? From my perspective, just
maintaining them on Wikidata still seems to be the simplest option...

2020-03-26 Thread RexxS
RexxS added a comment.

The thing is, Mike, that the descriptions on Wikidata are monolingual. There
is a separate description for every language, so it's not a matter of a central
repository that can be used across all projects. The Wikidata description field
is potentially useful for the corresponding language Wikipedia and the handful
of multilingual Wikis, so it really doesn't find as many uses as statements do.
Also unlike statements, it is not capable of being linked to a reliable source.
so there's no inherent mechanism to promote reliability.

I agree with Danny: we'd be far better off bot-importing the short
description from the language Wikipedia into Wikidata's description. Or even
better, dynamically importing the "local description' field, generated by the
language Wikipedia as a read-only replacement for the Wikidata description.

It still means that we maintain two separate databases containing what should
be the same information. Telling a bot to skip certain items is a key problem,
but not the only one, we still have to figure out how to automatically resolve
arguments that arise between an editor on enwp and an editor on wikidata, or
have some sort of mediation page.

The magic word SHORRTDESC stores the last instance found on the page. This is problematic and it would be preferable to store the first instance. Please fix

Short descriptions are automatically produced by several templates, Some produce a generic short description suitable for a large number of pages, such as disambiguation pages. Others assemble a short description from component parameters of an infobox, which are sufficient in most cases, but seldom ideal. In cases where a local customised short description is preferred, this is added to the toop of the article for readons discussed on Wikipedia, which come down to that the top of the article is whre people will look for it as it is an annotation to the title. Currently the last instance of the magic word defines the stored short description. This should be changed so that the first instance is storedTASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T184000EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Tgr, PbsouthwoodCc: Pbsouthwood, Deskana, Catrope, RexxS, Nikerabbit, Dbrant, LGoto, Jdlrobson, Stashbot, WMDE-leszek, Elitre, gerritbot, TheDJ, Fjalapeno, Tbayer, MZMcBride, Alsee, bearND, Mike_Peel, Tgr, JKatzWMF, daniel, Bmueller, Addshore, Lydia_Pintscher, Samwilson, Aklapper, DannyH, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, TBolliger, QZanden, Taquo, LawExplorer, catalandres, JJMC89, B20180, Karthik_sripal, Nakon, MusikAnimal, Niharika, Fhocutt, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Josve05a, Ricordisamoa, -jem-, Jdforrester-WMF, Mbch331, Krenair___

Deployed on enwiki. Not used anywhere yet (I imagine {{short description}}, used on ~5000 pages, will be soon updated to use it); API help is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:ApiHelp/query+description

Follow-ups needed:

add short description to page info so that editors can check the current value without having to call the API
add auto-tracking of Wikidata description to pages where the override is not used
use the new API in MobileFrontend, MCS and mobile apps (and maybe VisualEditor?)

This is now in testwiki (also beta enwiki) and seems to be working well. Just from testing some large API queries, it seems on par with pageterms on performance (both are fairly fast even for thousands of pages). I think it could go to enwiki later this week, but I won't be around. Anyone willing to shepherd https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/420227 through SWAT? Otherwise, I can do it next Tuesday.

Display the override in the page information.

Oops, forgot to do that. Not a blocker, I'll add it later.

prop=description sounds like a good way to do this! It's a little more work, but provides a more sensible interface to clients.

descsource=magicword|wikibase would work, but in general, clients should not know or care about this. At least, the default behavior in the absence of descsource should be a configuration option.

One big question is however where this code would live. It will have to know about wikibase, but only have a soft dependency on it. So it shouldn't be in core. It can live in wikibase, but I'd prefer it to be separate. Conceptually, this mechanism could be used to provide short descriptions without wikibase being installed. On the other hand, making this a separate extension may be too much overhead.

@daniel pointed out to me that the pageterms api module was originally introduced for the apps etc to use.
For future, APIs have the ability to be marked as "internal" if they are only designed for internal use, this would allow us to make whatever changes we want to suit the needs of wikimedia products.
If this was the case already for pageterms I really wouldn't mind what changes would be made (although it would probably make more sense that the module have a better name, appterms or similar)

So, prop=description sounds like the approach that would totally separate this from wikibase, which in my eyes is a good idea.
The choice of implementation could just be provided as another parameter to the api module, this could even be multivalue to allow fallbacks, for example:

prop=description&descsource=wikibase - Description comes from wikibase directly.
prop=description&descsource=magicword - Description comes from magicword.
prop=description&descsource=magicword|wikibase - Description comes from the magic word with a fallback to wikibase.

If changing client behavior is an option, my preferred approach would be to introduce a new API module that offers a short description and (to the outside) says nothing about where it comes from, and then have one implementation that uses wikidata, one that uses the magic word, and one that combines both using some kind of fallback logic. But as far as I understand, we do not have this luxury.

(@bearND pointed out that the Android app does that, but not on English Wikipedia.)

In T184000#3988377, @Addshore wrote:
It is still a breaking change / change in behaviour.

The https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Stable_Interface_Policy says:
The Wikibase Web API accessible via https://www.wikidata.org/w/api.php is considered a stable interface. Changes to the parameters, operation, or returned data structure are subject to the above notification policy.
Breaking change: a change to an API or data format that violates guarantees given or widely assumed before. Breaking changes include removal of API functions, parameters, or data fields and changes to the interpretation or format of parameters or data fields.

The policy requires an announcement two weeks in advance for breaking changes. One could argue whether it applies or not (it talks about www.wikidata.org APIs, which would not change), but that seems doable anyway; that means we should decide now which way to go and make the announcement (or not). I think how to handle legacy clients is a product decision so I'll kick this upwards. @DannyH asked for the breaking change option (or at least that's how I understood T184000#3953713) but maybe he or @Lydia_Pintscher wants to reconsider in light of the arguments brought up since.

To recap, we can either:

change the behavior of the API, to return the override when called the way clients call it currently (no extra parameters etc). That would automatically "upgrade" all clients out there to honor the override; if for some reason they rely on the description being specifically the same as the Wikidata description (e.g. because they allow editing and then write it back to Wikidata), they might break.
make the override a new "mode" of the API (that could be an opt-in behavior of the pageterm API that can be enabled by some extra parameter; or an extra field in the API output; or a new/different API module). That would mean all clients which want to honor the override need to be updated to use the API in the new way (see T184000#3954787 for a list of current clients); and then wait until end-users update their clients (for apps and other locally hosted software that can have a considerable long tail).

If we go with the first version, someone needs to decide whether we need to apply the timeline from the stable interface policy (at least two but preferably four weeks between announcement and deployment). That's a call for the Wikidata developer team I think.

In T184000#3988387, @TheDJ wrote:

@Addshore I guess the problem here is that what technically is a breaking change is also the requirement of this ticket: make existing clients receive the overwritten local description, without any change to the client. We cannot fulfill that requirement without a breaking change.

If changing client behavior is an option, my preferred approach would be to introduce a new API module that offers a short description and (to the outside) says nothing about where it comes from, and then have one implementation that uses wikidata, one that uses the magic word, and one that combines both using some kind of fallback logic. But as far as I understand, we do not have this luxury.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T184000EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Tgr, danielCc: TheDJ, Fjalapeno, Tbayer, MZMcBride, Alsee, bearND, Mike_Peel, Tgr, JKatzWMF, daniel, Bmueller, Addshore, Lydia_Pintscher, Samwilson, Aklapper, DannyH, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, JJMC89, B20180, Nakon, MusikAnimal, Niharika, Fhocutt, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Ricordisamoa, -jem-, Mbch331, Krenair___

This is partly true, but partly not. I'd describe them more as 'topic descriptions' - this is the description about what this topic is about, with links to the Wikipedia articles about it. Where the descriptions are well-written, then they do both what you are referring to as 'Wikidata descriptions' or 'article descriptions' (which are, sadly, yet another example of 'us vs them' thinking in this area...).

Although I still think the solution here is to improve the descriptions on Wikidata (and @daniel was spot-on here in his comments above), leaving that aside I have a question about the implementation. According to the API info, it looks like a pageterms API call is doing the correct thing, returning a Wikidata value. That probably shouldn't be broken. It appears the issue is the bits of code making the API calls. They are explicitly requesting Wikidata values.

It looks like the magic word description belongs under pageprops. However returning Wikidata descriptions though here would be just as wrong as returning the page description via the Wikidata API call.

It looks like the options are:

Abuse the Wikidata API call to return a value from either source;
Abuse the page properties to return a value from either source;
Have the calling code deal with both API calls;
Have a new API call somewhere that isn't explicitly tied to a source; or
Open a discussion on Meta and/or some of the other big wikis to consider the likely case that "silent" wikis have the same concerns and the same position as EnWiki. Then all calling code could be changed to use a pageprops API call.

1 and 2 are basically broken APIs. I hope we can veto broken APIs. 3 is gross, and should be scratched as well. Assuming I didn't miss anything, I think that pretty much leaves 4 or 5 as credible options. And in regard to #5, the fundamental reason for mess here is the plan to use one source for 50% of pageviews, and use a second source for the other 50%. Yup, another reason to not change the "description" key.

In a world where we factor out page terms into its own thing and could move things around a nice final output could be something like:

[
'wikibase' => [
'label' => 'Foo1',
'description' => 'Foo2',
],
'article' => [
'description' => 'from the parser function',

BTW. I wondered where "terms" originated from in wikidata speak. Best I could find was: "Term is a technical concept representing some text (a single string) in a specific language. Allocated in a set contained by a Fingerprint, Terms are used to capture Labels and Descriptions of Entities."

It is still a breaking change / change in behaviour.
Things could currently be using the behaviour that we advertise, changing the behaviour would be a break.
It is rather easy to avoid this breaking change, just don't change the definition of the "description" key in the api output.

The only one I can think of is when a client feeds this information back to Wikidata, e.g. by showing editable article descriptions, and I'm not aware of anything doing that (there was work on it for the official apps in T90765 and T145813 but not enabled yet).

That's a great example of how things could break.
If a client assumes the description returned by the page terms api is the wikidata description (which is currently a correct assumption and what is advertised) and goes on to make edits with it or even compare it with descriptions then things will start to break.

The https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Stable_Interface_Policy says:

@Tgr thanks for catching my sloppy hatmaking example. Hatmaking is an illustration for a completely different serious bug - interwiki links are badly broken. 75% of the interwiki links are missing from the English article , and 75% of languages with an article are missing interwiki links to English version.

However the seesaw/swing example still proves the fundamental point. Wikidata descriptions are descriptions of Wikidata items, for Wikidata purposes. Trying to put a Czech article-description in the Wikidata-description would be flat-out wrong. And using a Wikidata description as the Czech article description is going to be wrong.

Wikidata descriptions commonly have a passable resemblance to article descriptions, and some clients may sloppily or carelessly use them for that purpose, but Wikidata descriptions are not article descriptions. They never were.

Whoever started using Wikidata descriptions as article descriptions either made a deliberate decision that a convenient and sloppy-resemblance to "right" was better than nothing; or they were careless and didn't think through what they were doing. Either way, it's the 100th case where we could have saved a lot of headaches if the WMF had talked to the community before building the code.

So, this doesn't really have anything to do with wikibase, what we are adding here is a parser function to register an article description, that we want to be accessible via an API.
I agree with what @Alsee says that the description of the wikidata item and the description of the article can be and probably should be two distinct things.

In PageTerms::execute go through the returned terms, and replace the descriptions with overrides when available. Rely on the PageProps class to do the caching.

Maybe keep the Wikidata description and add it to the API result under a different name (wikibaseDescription? originalDescription?) so that old clients will automatically use the overrides while clients aware of what's going on can decide for themselves.

So, again overriding the current wikidata description here is a breaking change.
We should not do that.
If we want to add something new, such as an article description, lets add it under a new key called "article-description" instead of redefining something that already exists and has a clear definition.

Modify the API help messages (only if overrides are enabled) to make clear what's happening. Not considered an API B/C break since clients still get a description, just from a slightly different source.

Again, changing what is under the description key is a break in compatibility in my eyes, the description key should remain the wikidata description for the item linked to the article. If we want to add other stuff, then sure.

We could factor out the page terms stuff and not break B/C, just leaving the wikidata stuff where it is now and adding new keys for extra stuff. 'description' and 'article-description' could live side by side. One backed by wikidata and one backed by a magic word / parser function.

Instead of making the "original" description available in addition (which one is "original" anyway?) or indicating whether the description returned was overwritten, perhaps add a parameter for suppressing the override, forcing the use of the description from wikidata: disable-description-override or force-shared-description or something.

A param could be another route, something that would allow selecting of the source of the terms. options could be 'wikibase', or 'parser-overrides' or 'wikibase-fallback' etc with varying behaviours.

This sentence is a bit misleading. "Label" in Wikidata terminology is nothing to do with 'article title'.
As written in the wikidata glossary "Label (also name) is the main name given to identify an entity".
So it is the term used to describe the concept of the item, but let's avoid the word article there to avoid any confusion.

I'm not familiar with all of the API issues, but if this helps:
The magicword Shortdesc: is actually a description of the article. The Wikidata label is a description of the Wikidata item. Someone thought Wikidata labels could conveniently be re-used as if they were an article description. But they aren't article descriptions.

For example, some Wikipedia languages have an article on "Hatmaking", other languages may have an article on "Hatmakers". They are all linked to the same Wikidata item, and it's pretty much random whether the Wikidata item is "Hatmaker" or "Hatmaking". Another example, Wikidata has items for "Seesaw" and "swing". However the Czech language has a single word that covers both, and Czech Wikipedia has a single article that covers both. (The Czech article is linked to one of those two Wikidata items at random, because of a Wikidata design flaw that can't handle the correct dual-linkage.)

So aside from the issue that the EnWiki community wants local control of what is functionally EnWiki content, the Wikidata label is not, and never was, a description of an article.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T184000EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Tgr, AlseeCc: Fjalapeno, Mholloway, Tbayer, MZMcBride, Alsee, bearND, Mike_Peel, Tgr, JKatzWMF, daniel, Bmueller, Addshore, Lydia_Pintscher, Samwilson, Aklapper, DannyH, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, JJMC89, B20180, Nakon, MusikAnimal, Niharika, Fhocutt, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Ricordisamoa, -jem-, Mbch331, Krenair___

...as to registering the description as used: this should be governed by a separate setting. It really has nothing to do with the magic word.

I think the setting should be generic, not limited to descriptions. E.g.:

$wgWBClientSettings['impliciteUsageAspects'] = [ 'D', 'L' ];

...that would track implicite description and label usage for the "connected" item. Actually, this should be restricted to the content language (unless the wiki is multi-lingual):

$wgWBClientSettings['impliciteUsageAspects'] = [ 'D.en', 'L.en' ];

Actually, there already is one implicit usage being tracked: 'S' for the sitelink itself. This is done in lientParserOutputDataUpdater::updateItemIdProperty(). Other implicite usages should also be tracked there. That method is indeed triggered by the ContentAlterParserOutput hook, via ParserOutputUpdateHookHandlers::doContentAlterParserOutput.

The more I think about this, the I believe we should have a separate ticket for that feature. It's conceptually related, but technically completely unrelated to the magic word. Regarding reflecting the wiki base value, i think it's best to indeed have that as an additional value within terms, but probably not by default. I'do think we would need some sort of marker in the API output, to reflect the source of the description

"shared description": [ "original" ]
"datarepository": "local | wikidata | shared" (for Commons we have: "imagerepository": "shared")

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T184000: Magic word on English WP to override display of Wikidata short description

2018-02-19 Thread Tgr
Tgr added a comment.
Implementation plan:

Register a $wgWBClientSettings['descriptionOverride'] config variable.
When enabled, define a new parser function {{SHORTDESC:...}}.
The parser function hook stores the argument of the parserfunction in the ParserOutput's page properties with a wikibase-description-override key.
In PageTerms::execute go through the returned terms, and replace the descriptions with overrides when available. Rely on the PageProps class to do the caching.
...which doesn't actually seem to do it for negative results, so that needs to be fixed.
The alternative would be to modify / subclass TermSqlIndex to look at page properties, but that seems more wrong given that this is API-specific behavior that doesn't really have much to do with the actual page terms. (OTOH maybe there are non-API usages where there override needs to work? Such as Lua / templates?)
Maybe keep the Wikidata description and add it to the API result under a different name (wikibaseDescription? originalDescription?) so that old clients will automatically use the overrides while clients aware of what's going on can decide for themselves.

Modify the API help messages (only if overrides are enabled) to make clear what's happening. Not considered an API B/C break since clients still get a description, just from a slightly different source.
Somewhere at the end of parsing use a ParserOutputUsageAccumulator to register whether the description for the current page was overriden or not (the idea being that the description is always "in use" due to the mobile apps showing it, so it should always be exposed in recent changes etc same as if it were used in a template, unless it gets overridden). Not sure what's the right place for that, ContentAlterParserOutput maybe?

Are there any older app versions out there which might use a different method to get the data? Does Android use MCS?

Android uses MCS by default. There are a few exceptions but those wouldn't account for a big number like that. Where the numbers are coming from is that the Android app still uses pageterms to get the descriptions in other areas of the app: Read more, search results, nearby results, reading list. And then there's also the iOS app, which does the same plus also uses it for the description on top of each page.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T184000EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: bearNDCc: bearND, Mike_Peel, Tgr, JKatzWMF, TheDJ, daniel, Bmueller, Addshore, Lydia_Pintscher, Samwilson, Aklapper, DannyH, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, JJMC89, B20180, Nakon, MusikAnimal, Niharika, Fhocutt, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Ricordisamoa, -jem-, Mbch331, Krenair___

improve communication with developers

The community has been reaching out for over a year on most of these potential improvements, back when they stopped descriptions on the mobile website 2 years ago and very actively again for at least 8 months regarding the descriptions overall. Most community liaisons (esp CKoerner) as well as people like Jon Katz, Lydia and Danny were more than informed at various stages during that time . Almost all these improvements had been suggested long ago by community members. The problem is that there is no one who has decided to prioritise these tasks, so nothing happened for 8 months (or 2 years for that matter). The plan is to just disable editing if there is an override, there is no sane way to edit the contents of a parserfunction.

Again with MCR (so a little down the line) there would be no reason the description couldn't be moved to it's own content blob, and editing would then be pretty trivial.

@gh87 I wonder whether this discussion was sufficiently informed by the technical options and implications.

For instance, this statement: That requires meaningful integration in Wikipedia watchlists and page history. Those are features that the Wikidata team is working on, but they don't currently exist, and they don't have a timeline for it. Similarly: There is also a technical problem in that the short description is currently not visible from desktop view, and does not show up usefully on watchlists, so vandalism can go undetected by Wikipedians.

It's true that there is no timeline for integration with page history, and it's unclear whether that is even desired. But integration with the watchlist can easily be achieved, and so can display on the desktop view (the hardest part is deciding where to show this). It's frustrating to see that these things were not considered in the discussion. My impression is that the decision was made based on the assumption that proper watchlist integration was a hard problem, which it is not.

I'm not suggesting to go against a community decision. I'm suggesting to:

make alternative solutions available, if doing so does not require much extra work

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T184000: Magic word on English WP to override display of Wikidata short description

2018-01-25 Thread daniel

We're still talking about when that switch will happen -- the current plan is to switch when there are non-blank descriptions on 2 million article pages. That might happen quickly, or it might take a long time, depending on how the community chooses to use the magic word.

We are encouraging data duplication now? That seems like a bad idea.

This ticket doesn't say how it is motivated. My understanding is that it's about Wikipedia editors wanting more control over the data, to prevent vandalism. To allow this, I'd propose the following:

expose the short description (and perhaps also the label) on desktop page views. This is trivial enough, the only question is where to show it.
to do that, the description (and labels) need to be recorded in the ParserOutput. This can be done by hooking into the parsing process. If the magic word is present, record the description from that. If not, pull the description from wikidata, and record that, and track that usage via wikidata usage tracking.

This way, changes to the descriptions will show up on recentchanges/watchlists, so the community can patrol them. They also become visible to desktop users, so vandalism can be detected. And it's still possible to override the description from wikidata, if desired.

I think this would provide the community with the necessary tools to have control of the content, without the need of duplicating millions of descriptions just so edits show up in watchlists.

The integration of Wikidata with local workflows on Wikipedia isn't optimal right now. I think we should fix that by improving that integration, not by removing it.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T184000EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: danielCc: TheDJ, daniel, Bmueller, Addshore, Lydia_Pintscher, Samwilson, Aklapper, DannyH, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, JJMC89, B20180, Nakon, MusikAnimal, Niharika, Fhocutt, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Ricordisamoa, -jem-, Mbch331, Krenair___

Thanks @TheDJ for summarizing many of the points in the RFC above. I'm going into this blank, and just want to add my thoughts once, and try to avoid any repeat discussion that may have already come up in the RFC. I feel that many issues have been identified, but this ticket isn't really addressing the underlying issue, rather making a quick fix that in the long term will just end up biting back.
Also I recognize that the issue of these descriptions being exposed via mobile and not being visible on wikipedia desktop, or in the controll of the enwiki community in any way was raised a year ago (or something like that) and the feature was half switched off, but this didn't really solve the issues identified back then. By not resolving that RFC properly / doing move investigation into the initial request we have ended up with this ticket.

One of the issues seems to be that the mobile apps surface data to users that is not displayed on the wikipedias in desktop. This leads to vandalism being missed, users don't see the data when they just flip to an article on enwiki, and the watchlist process as said can be delayed leading to changes dropping off the watchlist or only being added to the watchlist after a 'large' period of time (generally 2.5-5 mins, but can be greater).
This could be solved by simply displaying the en description, as is done on mobile, also on the desktop experience, this could live next to or under the title (for example).

The issue raised regarding the watchlist and items only being added when they have already fallen off the end could be solved by entries being sorted differently, perhaps sorted by the time that they are added to the watchlist or dispatched to the wiki rather than the time that change actually happened. This might be worth opening a ticket about.

One of the next issues is the control of the data, particularly protection of data. We have the situation where an enwiki admin can protect a page due to vandalism, yet the description is then still editable through the mobile app. enwiki admins have no control of over when the wikidata description is editable. A simple solution would be to have the mobile apps check the protection state of the enwiki article before allowing an edit to the description (I guess this is already done for the article itself).
I have not been following the research that the wikidata team has been doing regarding client editing, but it could make sense for edits to wikidata data from for example enwiki to come through the enwiki API. Wikidata / wikibase repo api modules could all be surfaced on client wikis. This could allow for the protection issue to be addressed further, editing a description via wbsetdescription would first check the enwiki protection for the page linked to the item, before doing some sort of internal call to the wikidata api, where the wikidata checks would also take place. This could also potentially allow control of wikidata editing via abusefilter etc on the client side.

The case of wanting to override the descriptions provided by wikidata still stands.
Rather than the description being fetched from wikidata through the apps and the editing of descriptions happening there this should / could happen on the client wiki via an api.
The API would fetch the description from wikidata / the local override location. An a configurable editing api could also be created, with options such as, edit on wikidata, edit on a local override (somewhere) and different communities can allow different levels on wikidata interaction.

The location of the override on the wiki could be anything, it could be a subpage of the article with some fancy code? It could be a magic word on the page, in the world of MCR it could also be its own content.

Overrides on wikis can be reconciled where possible by the wikidata community, improving the wikidata data, in cases where the override description is deemed an improvement, wikidata can be updated, and the override could be (optionally) removed.

I can probably pull some other tasks out of this comment.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T184000EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: AddshoreCc: TheDJ, daniel, Bmueller, Addshore, Lydia_Pintscher, Samwilson, Aklapper, DannyH, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, JJMC89, B20180, Nakon, MusikAnimal, Niharika, Fhocutt, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Ricordisamoa, -jem-, Mbch331, Krenair___

Correct. The English Wikipedia community doesn't want that Wikidata to manage this data, where they have no control over it
I'm going to mention some of the reasons but I suggest we don't discuss them too much, as this is volatile topic that will just distract everyone.

Wikidata has no effective vandalism control
Wikidata changes often doesn't show on watchlists (delayed) or does so cryptically P# Q##
Wikidata doesn't use references for descriptions
protected articles can be vandalized via wikidata
wikidata descriptions are not visible on desktop and are thus their quality is not easily observable there
mixing wikidata and wikipedia is confusing for readers
'i don't understand/want to use wikidata', but you are forcing me to use it
Something like "Wikimedia disambiguation page" is not a useful description on Wikipedia

and quite some more arguments.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T184000EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: TheDJCc: TheDJ, daniel, Bmueller, Addshore, Lydia_Pintscher, Samwilson, Aklapper, DannyH, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, JJMC89, B20180, Nakon, MusikAnimal, Niharika, Fhocutt, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Ricordisamoa, -jem-, Mbch331, Krenair___

@Addshore It's what the subset of the community that screams the loudest wants. :)

As you might know, the English wikipedia is really close to an all out, Daily Mail-like, ban of WikiData. As most developers and a considerable set of users want to retain short descriptions, this seems like the only viable way forward.

Sometimes we need to take a step back to move forward.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T184000EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: TheDJCc: TheDJ, daniel, Bmueller, Addshore, Lydia_Pintscher, Samwilson, Aklapper, DannyH, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, JJMC89, B20180, Nakon, MusikAnimal, Niharika, Fhocutt, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Ricordisamoa, -jem-, Mbch331, Krenair___

Once this override is live, Wikipedia editors will populate the magic word on pages where they want to override the description. If/when they write enough descriptions that it's roughly comparable to the number of existing Wikidata descriptions, we will change the system again, to only pull from the Wikipedia descriptions, and not use the descriptions on Wikidata as the default/fallback.
