You can go through the end-term evaluation task any time you feel like, after 
@Sumit has completed it with the required links. Also, you need to submit an 
evaluation on Melange which will be available after 21st August 1900 UTC.  :)

Hi, I have associated two blocked-by tasks with this project.

**For the student:**

1. Please go through the checklist in the end-term evaluation and fill out the 
fields which require any links. The checkboxes are for the mentor(s) only. 
Adding information on the past projects page is your task.
2. Ensure that you have completed //all// the items listed in the end-term 
evaluation task. If there's a strong reason about why a particular item was not

Potentially this could be a good project to feature in your post. @sumit has

I'm not very happing with naming this `Wikidata Page Banner` extension as the 
Wikidata access should be optional. The extension should also work without 
Wikidata access on other MediaWiki installations so perhaps renaming this to 
`Page Banners` only would be more appropriate.

We should reserve the name at least and then decide on end of project - we may

If Software development is too broad, how about asking for PHP skills? 
Although I feel that anyone with software development skills can get up to 
speed with PHP in a day or two. We can also ask for MediaWiki development 
experience. Requiring these two skills is OK if you can afford to exclude many 
candidates, I guess.

Qgil: I think there is matter for a GSoC task, and the benefits would be great 
for Wikivoyage but also as an experiment for all wikis.

Image description, more than image selection, are not objective data, so it 
should stay in the specific project.
FYI description are managed by en:voy, although are not used by a big part of 
them.

IMHO, if you want a broader test, you should allow the use of local data, like 
other tool that Wikivoyage used for map (POI, article coverage, GPX, etc...)

On https://it.wikivoyage.org we store the banner locally without using the one 
on wikidata because we add a description for each banner, so we can't allow 
that the image will be changed from wikidata. We just have a category that list 
the articles that have a different local banner from the one on wikidata in 
order to discuss about its change.

The whole idea sounds good to me. As a WV user and frequent page banenner 
editor, I have some concerns:

1. I agree we need to maintain the possibility of having different page banner 
pictures in different language versions or projects.
2.

 Ideally I would imagine an edit button on the banner which when clicked pops 
 up an input field where you can search for an image on commons and saves as a 
 page property separate to wikitext. Would this be sufficient or would it need 
 to be part of the wiki text?


Searching for an image is usually not the whole story. The image needs usually 
quite a bit of editting, including resizing (cropping) to 7:1 ratio, sometimes 
rotation and maybe some other corrections. After that the file is saved to 
commons under a new name (under special naming convention).

3. When banner file is added locally with the pagebanner template, the 
administrators maintain certain control over quality of the banners during 
patrolling new changes. If the property is only changed in wikidata, WV 
community has not much chance to check if the banners criteria were maintained.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikivoyage_banners and its 
sub-namespaces, in which case we can restrict the searching of images to only 
those namespaces rather than the entire wikimedia commons, so that we have only 
standardized approved banners

Yes. The banners are specifically created for each article, then stored within 
this category in commons  and immidiatelly used. That means that there would be 
hardly any banners which are not used somewhere (except when someone created a 
small number of alternative banners for some article and then selected one of 
them). I don't think there are actually users making WV banners withoutr 
immidiate use of them - so there isn't anything like a stock of WV banners. And 
using each banner for only one article at a time (with a few exceptions) is one 
of the criteria for WV banners use.

I would suggest this approach to keep the first version minimal:

1. Implement optimised page banners for desktop/mobile experience that use 
wikidata property.
2. Allow override of banners with something akin to {{PAGEBANNER:Different 
banner.jpg}} (similar to display title)
3. Deprecate the Wikivoyage template in replace of the above (the existing 
template system will never work if you want the banners to be responsive and it 
would also allow us to make the page heading the thing inside the banner) - we 
can do this programatically e.g. stub out the template in the extension or just 
manually phase them out. We could even explore the use of that template in the 
page as doing something like NOTOC (e.g. NOBANNER ) in the interim

@Wrh2 we would use the existing wikivoyage look and feel for banners as a first 
version, so I'd be hoping for lots of input from the Wikivoyage community. Do 
any of the the existing Wikivoyage template designer/developers have Gerrit 
accounts they would be able to freely tweak this and help us with this?

If so I think this is quite a well scoped GSoc project. it might be a little 
ambitious but we should be able to make good progress getting this done.

@Wrh2 that would be the hope yes! It would work on both desktop and mobile and 
anything is up for grabs - the goal would be to build something generic which 
meets Wikivoyage's needs (if that includes table of contents stuff so be it!). 
We'd get it deployed to beta labs 
http://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Headings and I'd hope it would be 
very community driven (I would simply ensure the code was built well, was 
mobile friendly as well as desktop friendly and built in a generic fashion that 
would allow other projects to use it if they wished).

If this is a GSoc project I'd hope that a Wikivoyage community member could be 
a co-mentor.

I'm a bit concerned as to whether there are sufficient requirements to ensure 
that someone who isn't already familiar with Wikivoyage will be able to 
implement a solution that is actually going to be used on Wikivoyage. Currently 
page banners work just fine on the full site, although they are definitely a 
hack.  Is the goal of the extension solely to return a banner image sized 
appropriately for the user's browser on page load?  Will the extension also 
implement the current Javascript functionality that resizes the banner when the 
user resizes the browser window?  Will the extension implement the table of 
contents overlay, or the icon overlays (see 
https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Template:Pagebanner)?  Is this proposal solely 
meant for use on mobile, and something that won't be used for the full site?  
Or is it part of the GSOC project to figure out how to answer these questions 
and implement an extension that offers all of the functionality of the current 
template?

I'm fully in support of making current page banners less of a hack, and making 
them useful on mobile clients, but after several months of discussion I'm 
unfortunately still not clear on what exactly is supposed to change once this 
proposal has been implemented.  Part of that may be my lack of knowledge of 
Mediawiki extensions, and if others are very clear on the path forward then 
please ignore me and move on, but as someone who does software development for 
a living, I don't think that the discussion above would provide sufficient 
information for me to begin development.

Personally I would like to see this implemented in a way that is transparent, 
so that the existing page banner template 
(https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Template:Pagebanner) is just modified to invoke 
extension code, Common.css and Common.js are tweaked as needed, and nothing 
else has to change - every page that current invokes the template stays as-is: 
{{pagebanner | Sony Pictures Entertainment banner.jpg | caption=Entrance to 
Sony Pictures Studios }}

If you want this to be used by other consumer (mobile web, mobile apps, etc.), 
you really need to expose the banner image via an API. That way, each consumer 
can decide what they want to do with the information.

Without getting into the ins and outs of the technical details, if the image is 
not exposed via an API separate from the main HTML of a page, the mobile app 
will either be totally unaware of the image or we'll be forced to strip the 
image for design/performance reasons, both of which will result in the app not 
using this at all.

The home page banner template 
(https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Template:Banner) is completely unrelated to 
page banners (https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Template:Pagebanner).  The home 
page template is used to render the items in the carousel, which change three 
times a month, are a different size than the page banners, do not interact with 
the table of contents, etc.  I would strongly suggest that if this effort is 
going to go forward that it focus on the standard banners at the top of most 
pages, rather than trying to be a one-size-fits-all solution for any image that 
displays in full page width.

Many pages on the wikivoyage project use a banner image of their own using the 
pagebanner template, I guess here's where the passing of custom parameter to a 
parser hook function will be useful. If no parameter is passed, it would 
default to the wikidata value?

Wouldn't this new extension be created as a parser hook similar to something 
like https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:GeoCrumbs?  We still want some 
control over the banner so that we don't have a banner appearing on the main 
page (for example), and we also need to be able to pass any needed overrides.  
I would envision that the existing template would still be kept, it would just 
be reconfigured to invoke the extension with the required params.

If this proposal does move forward there needs to be a way to locally override 
the Wikidata property, as has been previously mentioned.  Additionally, if 
possible, a major shortcoming of the current banners is that they require 
hiding the h1 tag with display:none CSS, and the banner then uses a div 
for the article name in the banner (using a h1 tag in wiki source causes the 
page name to appear in the TOC), which is horrible for SEO.  If there was a way 
to move this functionality to an extension and have an h1 tag in the banner 
that contains the article name without causing a TOC update, that would be an 
additional win.

@Matroc It seems that the Wikidata property is misleading then, I had imagined 
all projects would be sharing the same value. It might be better to have a 
property per project.

I hadn't envisioned the extension supporting Banner images outside a Wikidata 
instance and it would be great to avoid this if possible.

The problem with that solution would be that the banners were intentionally 
designed to default to the single value stored in Wikidata -- that way, adding 
a banner to an article that doesn't have one causes the same banner to appear 
on all the other projects (that use banners). Having one property per project 
would negate that -- and there'd be no reason to store that information on 
Wikidata anyway, because it wouldn't be shared between projects.

The goal of Wikidata banners is to share banners between all Wikivoyage 
projects. This is the huge benefit that prompted us to use Wikidata for banners.
Exceptionally, a project may choose to override a value, but that's rare and 
does not negate the overall benefits.

 @Matroc why is the Wikidata value India banner Elephants.jpg ? Is that just 
 an old value? Which is the true one? Surely Wikidata should only have one 
 Wikivoyage property?


I've explained before that different Wikivoyages have different opinions on 
what banner should be displayed at the top of a given article. In this case, 
the elephant banner was used first; User:ויקיג'אנקי 
[https://en.wikivoyage.org/w/index.php?title=Indiadiff=2453636oldid=2449617 
made the change] to English Wikivoyage in October of 2013. Currently I believe 
English and Hebrew Wikivoyages use the Taj Mahal banner, while all of the other 
Wikivoyages that use banners use the elephant image.

I will note that the change User:ויקיג'אנקי made was undiscussed on English 
Wikivoyage, as far as I can tell. I don't know why the change was made, except 
personal preference of the user who changed it.

@LtPowers -- Thanks for answering question - Spanish and French Wikivoyage use 
the elephant image... I noted the change to the English Wikivoyage India banner 
as occurring in October of 2013 as well.
@Jdlrobson --  Wikidata does have one property for banner.

I just wanted make the note that various sites may wish to use alternative 
banner images and that that option should be included in the extension...

I made a Lua module to retrieve the banner name from Wikidata which I used as 
an argument for the existing wikivoyage pagebanner template as a test to 
investigate some things, I found with India (Q668) that:

India banner Elephants.jpg - (Wikidata - P948) does not match 
TajMahal_Banner.jpg- (on Wikivoyage article page) -- this shows the need to 
have the option for an alternate banner image (as an argument) for the 
extension being discussed I think...

optional thing you can switch on or off.

@Lydia_Pintscher right now we are proposing building one for Wikivoyage where 
there some seem community buy in.

In terms of Wikipedia we are purely experimenting. The app already is doing 
this and mobile web is exploring how it would work there. This is how we 
explore :)

I was thinking about this a bit more... the WV pagebanner template has two 
components -- the banner and the horizontal TOC -- would the extension capture 
both? If it doesn't, non-mobile WV will still need the template to create the 
horizontal TOC.

The concept of TOC is built into MediaWiki 
(https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Table_of_contents) so I guess that 
including the TOC in the banner via the extension could make sense, rather than 
doing it manually.
By the way, only level 1 section names are shown in the banner TOC, so no TOC 
for sub-sections, which means deep-linking to a sub-section is difficult for 
the average user.
Wikivoyage has a limited number of sections, all of which have short names. 
Wikipedia for instance does not have these rules, so we have to think about 
cases when there are many sections with long names.

Not sure you want that too in the extension, but Wikivoyage's banners also have 
a third component, which is the badges you can see at the upper-right of this 
article for instance:

There are various badges like:

- UNESCO World heritage site
- Star article
- Previous destination of the month

The reason is simple; there is more than one Wikivoyage project, and the 
communities on each occasionally have differing opinions on the aesthetics of 
banners. So, for example, the Hebrew Wikivoyage may choose a banner and put it 
into Wikidata, while the English Wikivoyage considers but rejects that banner 
in favor of a different one. It's not common, but not rare either.
