Re: [Wikimedia-l] An Open Letter to Wikimedia Foundation BoT

2016-02-19 Thread Siko Bouterse
Ido, Ori, Sydney, Shani, Ben, Delphine, Gayle, thank you for your boldness
and wisdom in this thread. I know how rarely some of us speak on this list,
and I appreciate you raising your voices here, now. I need to believe that
the power of the collective leadership that so many volunteers and staff
are showing here will ultimately be strong enough to ensure that the
Wikimedia Foundation has the leadership that its mission deserves.

[Wikimedia-l] Another goodbye

2016-02-11 Thread Siko Bouterse
Dear friends and colleagues,

I’ve had the amazing privilege of serving this movement in a staff capacity
for the past 4 ½ years, but I’ve now decided to move on from my role at the
Wikimedia Foundation.

Transparency, integrity, community and free knowledge remain deeply
important to me, and I believe I will be better placed to represent those
values in a volunteer capacity at this time. I am and will always remain a
Wikimedian, so you'll still see me around the projects (User:Seeeko),
hopefully with renewed energy and joy in volunteering.

This movement has become my home in so many unexpected ways, and I’m truly
honored to have learned from so many of you. It was an amazing experience
to have partnered with smart, bold, and dedicated community folks to
experiment with projects like Teahouse, IdeaLab, Inspire, Individual
Engagement Grants, and Reimagining Grants. I’ve seen you create some really
incredible content, ideas, tools, programs, processes, committees and
organizations, all in the service of free knowledge.

I expect my last day to be Thursday, February 25th. I have full confidence
in Maggie Dennis's abilities to lead the Community Engagement Department,
and I trust that my team will remain available to support the community’s
needs for grants and other resources throughout this time of transition.

Much love,
Siko

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Help decide Future IdeaLab Campaigns!

2015-12-07 Thread Siko Bouterse
Hi Pine,
Some quick answers to your questions:

1. The initial results of the Inspire Campaign themselves were largely very
good (see:
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/05/28/what-we-learned-from-the-inspire-campaign/).
As for the projects funded as a result of the campaign, though, they're
still running and so we expect to have analysis of their impact completed
towards the end of this fiscal year (by June 2016), after all grantees have
reported back.
2. Yes. See Jethro's FAQ # 2 for the fuller answer:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Future_IdeaLab_Campaigns#FAQ

Cheers,
Siko

Hi Liang. Confirming here that we've asked anyone who is considering
hosting Wikimania (for 2017 or any other year) to be in touch with Ellie
Young directly before putting any more energy into a bid. Hope this is

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimania-l] Thoughts on carrying the Wikimania conversation forward

2015-10-12 Thread Siko Bouterse
Thanks for these suggestions, Lodewijk. Starting with the main goals and
ideas before moving to detailed process and criteria makes a lot of sense.
We'll need to define a process for 2018 before too long - one of the issues
we're seeing is a need to select hosts earlier, because good venues book up
early - so I'm not sure we can postpone the process discussions entirely
until after Ensino Lario, but I hear your point about vision before
process, and about using the next Wikimania to forward some phases of
discussion in-person. We can look at options for how to accomplish this.

Cheers,

[Wikimedia-l] Thoughts on carrying the Wikimania conversation forward

2015-10-05 Thread Siko Bouterse
Hi folks,

Just letting you know that I’m reading the recent Wikimania-focused mailing
list threads with interest, as the Community Resources team is now on-point
for funding and coordinating WMF’s involvement in Wikimania.

A couple of first thoughts to share:

1. WMF has learned from past Wikimanias that we need to do our
due-diligence on venue etc before the host team and location is announced.
One reason for this is that we have a limited budget for Wikimania, and
doing a site visit before the host is finalized helps us ensure that we’re
able to support the costs of the event in a given location. Ellie Young is
headed to Montreal in 2 weeks and based on what she learns from that visit,
we’re aiming to give the steering committee what they need to confirm
selection before the end of 2015. That said, we recognize that
communications around this haven’t gone as planned, and we are looking into
improvements…(see thought 2)

2. We, too, would like to see the movement building towards a shared vision
of Wikimania! It is great to see so many people, in true Wikimedian-style,
thinking about big-picture questions of participation, representation, and
content at Wikimania. Knowing that mailing list discussions have their
limits, here’s how my team is thinking about collecting feedback more
systematically for this going forward:

We’ll be launching a community consultation in November to help build
towards more shared vision and process improvements for Wikimania 2018 -
2021. Two key inputs we’ve been thinking about using to launch that
conversation are 1) responses from the survey of last Wikimania’s attendees
and 2) the steering committee’s recommendation for host selection going
forward.

We’re still regrouping from the latest Resources Consultation, and will
begin planning for a Wikimania Consultation next week, so after that we’ll
be able to share more information about what this consultation will look
like and the exact timeline. Meanwhile, suggestions and open questions that
you’d like to see resolved via this consultation are most welcome in this
thread. My hope is that a consultation will help broaden participation in
these conversations and get us from input to action.

Warm regards,
Siko

[Wikimedia-l] Announcing Marti Johnson as WMF Program Officer for Individual Grants

2015-05-04 Thread Siko Bouterse
Hi all,
Following up on the announcement about a new structure in the Community
Engagement team,[1] I'm happy to say we've now got a new program officer to
support WMF's Individual Engagement Grants program. Please see below for
more details. This month, Marti Johnson will be taking over for both the
IEG and TPS programs.[2] Grantees and committee members will be introduced
to Marti soon, as her onboarding to both programs begins :) Meanwhile, I
trust you will help make her feel welcome.
Warmly,
Siko

Subject: Announcing Marti Johnson as Program Officer for Individual Grants
To: Staff All

Hi all,

I'm excited to announce that we've got a new Program Officer for Individual
Grants. Please join me in congratulating Marti Johnson as she transitions
to this role!

Marti joined WMF as Project Coordinator in the Grantmaking and Programs
(later turned Community Engagement) department in September 2014. She
quickly demonstrated that she’s a strategic thinker who brings deep respect
for communities, a facility for organizing systems that foster creativity
and collaboration, and the warmth and generosity needed to support
individuals to do their best work.

In her new role, Marti will be responsible for the Individual Engagement
Grants and Travel and Participation Support programs. She reports directly
to me.

I’m delighted to have Marti move into the Community Resources team to put
her talents to work, particularly for supporting our Individual Engagement
Grantees and taking IEG to the next level over the coming year. Among other
things, Marti will be working on creating more robust mentorship systems
and a broader network to support grantees, while continuing to offer direct
support herself to the IEG grantees, proposers, and committee.

We’ve begun a transition period in which Marti is working to hand-off her
role in supporting Luis and the Community Engagement team while beginning
to assume her new responsibilities in Community Resources. Marti has
already taken on responsibility for Travel and Participation Support, this
week she will be onboarding our new crop of Inspire grantees in IEG, and
over the course of May I’ll be handing all day-to-day operations for IEG to
her as well. More information will be coming from Lynette later this month
about the backfill for Marti’s former Project Coordinator position. Many
thanks to Lynette for bringing Marti to WMF and supporting her move to this
new role :)

Here’s a bit more about Marti, for those of you who haven’t yet had a
chance to get to know her:

Inspired by a senior paper on agrarian community in American literature,
Marti took her first job after college coordinating Community Supported
Agriculture on an urban organic farm. A year of service as an AmeriCorps
volunteer led to a decade managing collaboratively driven resource
conservation projects on California farmlands. She gained extensive
experience with grants management, including proposal and report writing,
grantmaking, contract oversight and coordination of budgets ranging from
hundreds to millions of dollars. Marti specialized in facilitating
community-based processes and played a lead role in coordinating a
private-public alliance which was awarded California’s highest honor for
environmental and economic leadership. She gained a reputation for
building meaningful collaboration--and among other tools, she relied
heavily on wikis she built with MediaWiki software to do it. After moving
to San Francisco, Marti was very excited to join WMF and offer skills in
community coordination, collaborative strategy-building and grants
management in the context of Wikimedia projects. In her free time, Marti
likes to backpack, write and take long walks in Golden Gate Park. She has
recently been working toward a goal to read through the complete works of
Shakespeare (about 75% complete!) and welcomes read-aloud collaborators.

Congratulations and welcome to Community Resources, Marti!

Warm regards,
Siko

As WMF continues to focus on "integration" as a major theme in 2015, we'll
certainly be giving the big picture of all our grantmaking structures,
impact assessments, etc some further thought. Any updates to grant programs
would happen in consult with the committees and broader community, so you
can expect that the program officers and I will be having more
conversations on this topic with you all over the coming year (no sudden
changes, lots of measured thought).

[Wikimedia-l] Help launch the Inspire Grants Campaign in March 2015

2015-02-03 Thread Siko Bouterse
Hi all,

During March we will be running an Inspire Campaign to proactively source
and support new projects aimed at addressing Wikimedia’s gender gap:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Inspire_Grants_%E2%80%93_Gender_gap_campaign

Our goals are two-fold:

1. Experiment with running scalable themed campaigns in IdeaLab to incubate
more initiatives aimed at having a focused collective impact.

2. Proactively support community initiatives aimed at increasing gender
diversity in contributors to, and content of, Wikimedia projects.

Why are we piloting with a gender gap theme? A variety of initiatives are
needed to increase diversity and reduce systemic bias on Wikimedia
projects, but so far these haven’t emerged organically at scale. Without
taking time to focus together on increasing gender diversity in our content
and contributors, this trend is likely to continue. WMF’s Individual
Engagement Grants and Project and Event Grants could support such
initiatives, and we're interested to learn how specifically inviting
proposals in this area can have an impact.

March is WikiWomen’s History Month, and it’s a great time to focus extra
attention and energy together on addressing the gender gap.

We need your help! We’re looking for volunteers to join our team in the
following roles:

1. Community organizers: Spread the the word about the campaign to your
local communities, maintain a friendly space in IdeaLab, facilitate
development of ideas and project teams. (March)

2. Translators: Translate campaign content and gender gap resources into
your language. This is a global campaign, so all languages are welcome.
Some languages we’d particularly like to be able to support include:
Spanish, Arabic, Malayalam, Telugu, and Ukrainian. (February and March)

3. Funding committee: Facilitate development of ideas to grant proposals,
support idea-creators to improve proposals, greenlight projects for funding
via either Individual Engagement Grants or Project & Event Grants. (March
and April)

If you’re interested in any of the above roles, please signup under
“Participants” on the planning page or email Siko or Alex by February 10th.

Hi Jens,
Some quick stats:

*PEG handles about 20 proposals per month

*IEG handles about 30 submissions per round (of those requested, we
ultimately funded 7 projects in the latest round)
*2 program officers, 1 grants administrator, and several other staffers are
advising or otherwise touching some portion of these grants to a much
smaller degree. 16 members on each committee (give or take a couple
members) are involved in reviewing proposals.

Great question. Current thinking is to do the usual announcing on mailing
lists, blog/social media, village pumps, etc, as well as experimenting with
running Central Notice banners. Would like to attract folks from various
wikis who have interest in this theme and ability to lead a project in
their community, beyond the usual (relatively small) slice who regularly
participate in lists like these or in the usual grantmaking discussions on
meta-wiki. And although outside media could help bring total newbies to
contribute ideas, discussion, and other forms of participation, it is
pretty darn important to have at least 1 experienced Wikimedian on a funded
team in order to lead and execute a useful community project, so
in-movement (particularly on-wiki) promotion is a priority. Any
thoughts/suggestions would be welcome!

Thanks for sharing this example, Anders. We're definitely going to learn a
lot from this experiment, as I am from this discussion, and will be sharing
back findings too :)

Your point about media interest as well as longer term impact is super
important. While we do need to be able to demonstrate some short-term
impact, I also think that for many of the grants we make the impact can
really only seen much more clearly in the longer term. So following up well
after the pilot is over will also be important.

I don't usually think that media coverage alone = thundering success (like
you, I'd probably have been disappointed at first with the early outcomes
you mentioned). But I do see that one possible outcome for campaigns like
this is increased media coverage which in turn could result in longer term
impact by bringing in more people to the projects. Will be on the lookout
for this - glad you mentioned it!

The campaign itself will only run for a month - in my experience with past
open calls for IEG, you really do need more than 2 weeks to get the word
out and get new ideas not only started but also developed w/ enough
community input that we rely on to assess which grants should move forward.
But in addition to the actual campaign itself, we need to bake in enough
time to prepare for it beforehand and get funded projects started
afterwards. There is significant staff effort behind the scenes for any
grantmaking we do, and in my experience even quick pilots take time to prep
and wrapup.

I'm hearing your concerns loud and clear, still, and agree it will be
interesting to see how many truly time-sensitive requests will come up
during this period. If the campaign is deemed a success worth repeating and
we also find we're over-stretching those involved (staff and volunteers)
because many non-theme focused projects need to be concurrently considered
(this is a big concern for me, and something we'll be keeping a close eye
on), that could be data-driven rationale for resourcing grantmaking
differently in next year's annual plan.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] WMF is shutting down grantmaking for good projects for 3 months for no reason

2015-01-05 Thread Siko Bouterse
try a different experiment, or simply go back to how
things were before.

We hope to bring together the experience and skills of both committees, and
will be creating an Inspire committee to review proposals. *Please let us
know by January 31st if you would like to join this campaign committee
focused on funding gender diversity!*

Those of you who don’t choose to join this first campaign committee will
get a few months break from reviewing new proposals. But you will still be
needed on the PEG and IEG committees to follow up with existing IEG and PEG
grantees, reading reports and offering support and advice to them as those
projects continue to move forward.

As IEG and PEG committee members, we hope you will support this experiment
by spreading the word in your communities, mentoring projects and grantees,
and helping us learn how we can improve the campaign model. We will be
publicizing the campaign in January and February with the aim to launch the
campaign March 4th and to make decisions on grants in April.

Let us know if you have questions, concerns, or ideas!

Wishing you a warm end to 2014 meanwhile and looking forward to connecting
with you in the New Year.

Cheers,
Siko and Alex

[Wikimedia-l] Upcoming help sessions for drafting Individual Engagement Grant proposals

2014-09-18 Thread Siko Bouterse
Hi all,
As we announced earlier this month[1], September is the month to apply for
an Individual Engagement Grant[2]. The deadline to submit a proposal is
September 30.

To help you turn your ideas and projects into successful proposals, we’re
hosting a few IdeaLab Proposal Clinics in Hangouts and IRC this month.[3]
The first one took place on September 16. Newcomers had a chance to talk to
current and past grantees, as well as WMF Grantmaking staff, to workshop
ideas and strengthen their proposals.

If you have an idea you would like to submit, but feel unsure about how to
draft or finalize your proposal, join a session! There are three events
left before the deadline:

* IRC office hours in #wikimedia-office - Sept 23, 1600 UTC (Tuesday)
* Hangout - Sept 25, 1700 UTC (Thursday) [4]
* Hangout - Sept 28, 1700 UTC (Sunday) [5]

Join us next week to discuss your ideas, and bring any questions you have
about IEG!

Cheers,
Siko

[Wikimedia-l] Open call for Individual Engagement Grant proposals

2014-09-02 Thread Siko Bouterse
Greetings! The Wikimedia Foundation Individual Engagement Grants program is
accepting proposals for funding new experiments from September 1st to 30th.
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG>

Your idea can improve Wikimedia projects by building a new tool or gadget,
organizing a better process on your wiki, conducting research on an
important issue, or providing other support for community-building. Whether
you need $200 or $30,000 USD, Individual Engagement Grants can cover your
own project development time in addition to funding for a team to help you.
The program has a flexible schedule and reporting structure, and
Grantmaking staff are there to support you through all stages of the
process.

Do you have have a good idea, but you are worried that it isn’t developed
enough for a grant? Put it into the IdeaLab, where volunteers and staff
can give you advice and guidance on how to bring it to life. <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab> Also, IEG will be hosting

[Wikimedia-l] Reimagining Travel and Participation Support grants

2013-12-11 Thread Siko Bouterse
Hi all,
We've published an analysis of the Travel and Participation Support
Program.[1]

This program is a partnership between WMF, Wikimedia Deutschland, and
Wikimedia Switzerland to fund travel for Wikimedians to attend
non-Wikimedia events.[2] After 2 years of operation, we wanted to learn
what's working and what's not.

Some key findings from the report include:

Opportunities:

*Travel funding provides opportunities to deeply connect participants to
the movement and each other.
*Participation Support demonstrates an opportunity to reach a range of new
Wikimedia grantees, including women and participants in the Global South.

Recommendations:

*The volume of requests and grants made in this program must be increased
in order to fully realize its potential; the scale of use is too small with
the current scope and setup.
*Program pages should be redesigned for ease-of-use and if possible with a
bit of joy.
*Publicizing the program should be a priority; blogs, social media, and
on-wiki promotional campaigns to spread awareness of the program could help
boost the number of requests.
*Simpler application methods should be investigated in order to keep the
process open to a range of applicants.
*Scope expansion for the program should be considered, particularly to
include Wikimedia events.

We hope to use the data in this report as a starting point to reimagine
if/how we can better support Wikimedians to travel and participate in
events. Please have a look at the findings and share your thoughts and
ideas on the talk page:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Participation_talk:Support/Analysis

Warm regards,
Siko

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Funding programs for individuals.

2013-09-03 Thread Siko Bouterse
I'm really happy to see this page and conversation around analyzing and
comparing various ways of grantmaking to individuals - thanks for starting
this!

Some learnings we have from the first round of IEG are posted here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Feedback/round_1_2013

We're planning to do a survey and some analysis of the Participation
Support Program in September to prepare for a revamp of that grantmaking
program and will share the learnings from that as well.

I'm particularly interested in understanding what kinds of microgrants are
working particularly well, what the most common challenges are with these
programs, and what needs are not yet being met for individuals in existing
programs...I wonder if adding a "questions" section to that page might be
useful, to help define the kinds of analysis as well?

Best wishes,
Siko

[Wikimedia-l] IEG Committee looking for new members this week

2013-08-27 Thread Siko Bouterse
Hi all,
The Individual Engagement Grants Committee is still looking for a few new
members to join us!

We know, you maybe have committee fatigue and are always being asked to
join something. Or, you've never served on a committee before and it seems
like too much work. But this will be fun, we promise!

Some reasons why you might want to join:

1. IEG projects might impact a wiki you love. Help decide which individual
community members and which new ideas should get grants of up to $30,000 to
improve one or more Wikimedia projects.

2. We're reasonably organized, but not overly serious. We've got a scoring
rubric to help you evaluate proposals, a cat mascot to keep you company,
and COI guidelines to keep you safe.

3. We're interested in learning new things, and so are you. We can teach
you about grantmaking to individuals and you'll teach us about some awesome
Wikimedia thing that you know all about.

4. You can focus on reviewing proposals related to an area of interest you
like best: Online community organizing, Offline outreach and partnerships,
Tools, or Research.

5. We think having lots of people with lots of different perspectives help
decide things is a good idea, and so do you.

6. It is easy to sign up. Please add your name, a statement and answer 2
brief questions by Friday 30 Aug.

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Committee

Best wishes,
Siko & the IEG Committee

2013-08-01 Thread Siko Bouterse
Hi all,

The Wikimedia Foundation and the Individual Engagement Grants Committee
invite you to submit proposals for grants of up to $30,000 to support
6-month projects that improve the Wikimedia community. These grants fund
individuals or small teams to organize, build, create, research or
facilitate something that enhances the work of Wikimedia’s volunteers.

The deadline to submit a proposal for this round is 30 September 2013:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG

We’re also seeking new committee members to help review and recommend
proposals for funding. The round 2 committee will be finalized 31 August
2013:

for projects to improve Wikimedia, and connect with potential
collaborators. Please come have a look and share your ideas!

[Wikimedia-l] Announcing Round 1 Individual Engagement Grantees

2013-03-29 Thread Siko Bouterse
 Selector
extension for MediaWiki makes the use of this script online
increasingly possible. Because Benny’s project will rely on the
availability of this extension on all Javanese Wikimedia projects, the
start of this grant depends on the WMF Internationalization team’s
completing its scheduled deployment in coming months. We would also
like to see more discussion and input from other members of the
Javanese community demonstrating the potential of this project, and
will be working with Benny to figure out how to support those
conversations while we await the deploy.

The new grantees will begin work on their projects in the coming weeks
and they’ll be sharing progress and learnings with us all along the
way. Please visit their pages on Meta-Wiki for complete project
information and updates.[1]

Thanks to everyone who participated in this round! We look forward to
seeing even more of your ideas and input in preparation for round 2,
which begins on August 1st.[14]

Warm regards,
Siko Bouterse, on behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation and the IEG committee

[Wikimedia-l] Introducing Ellie Young as Conference Coordinator

2013-03-27 Thread Siko Bouterse
Pardon the cross-posting from WMF staff list - I expect this role will be
of interest to many here too. Welcome, Ellie!

Subject: Introducing Ellie Young as Conference Coordinator
To: Staff All

Hi all,

Please join me in welcoming Ellie Young, who is taking on the role of
Conference Coordinator as an annual contract with WMF.[1]

As you may know, WMF's support for Wikimania in recent years has been
spread across a variety of staff members who have other core
responsibilities. With this new contract, we're creating a single point of
contact to act as liaison between WMF and the Wikimania organizing team, to
ensure that we're able to provide the host team with focused support where
help from WMF is needed.

Ellie brings with her a lot of experience in event planning for open
culture communities. She worked as Executive Director of USENIX
Association for over 20 years, where she and her team supported several
international conferences hosted by volunteers each year.[2] She also
currently serves on The Ada Initiative's Board of Advisors and has been an
activist for the democratization of educational materials most of her life.

Fun things we’ve learned about Ellie: Both sets of her grandparents helped
build the Panama Canal, and each generation since has had a pilot or two
doing transits of the ships. She has been to every country in Latin America
and the Caribbean except Brasil. You can often catch her hiking in the SF
East Bay Hills with her adorable mini-poodle, Jack.

As Conference Coordinator, Ellie will be facilitating and supporting the
work of the Wikimania host team and making sure there is good continuity
and knowledge-transfer as the conference moves to new hosts year-over-year.
She is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and will be sometimes working
from the SF office (sitting on the 3rd floor near HR). Ellie would like to
hear from you on all things Wikimania, so please do stop by or email her
anytime!

Huge thanks to all staff and volunteers who helped us craft this role and
interview candidates.

Welcome, Ellie!

Hi all,
As Sue mentioned, we're looking at growing WMF's grant-making to
individuals. This allows us to accomplish the goals of narrowing focus (on
WMF's capacity as grant-makers, in this case), while finding new ways to
support projects led by individual community members. Some more specifics
are on meta:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Individual_Engagement_Grants
Please share your thoughts on-wiki if possible.
Thanks!

[Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] September Fellowship News

2012-10-01 Thread Siko Bouterse
Hi all,

The August edition of the Fellowship News is now available on meta-wiki:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fellowship_News

Project highlights in this issue include:

Dispute Resolution Project - Steven Zhang compiled results of the August
trial at the Dispute Resolution Noticeboard, and a Request for Comment on
an easier way to file dispute resolution requests is underway.

WikiWomen's Collaborative Project - Sarah Stierch and volunteer WikiWomen
around the world launched the WikiWomen's Collaborative, a social media
initiative connecting women who currently edit or aspire to edit Wikipedia.

Help Pages Redesign Project - Peter Coombe completed a redesign of English
Wikipedia's main help page and usability tests are being run to compare
users' experiences with it. Results will be compiled and a redesign
proposal will be brought to the community for discussion.

Small Wiki Editor Engagement Project - Tanvir Rahman launched the new help
page system on Bangla Wikipedia with pages that teach editors about new
article creation and other popular editing activities. Metrics are still
being collected but it appears article creation has already nearly doubled.

Teahouse Project - The Teahouse team refined automated invites and finished
improvements that surface hosting activity. The Teahouse pages are going
through a redesign to simplify the space for new editors, and we're looking
at creating a new volunteer "maitre d" role.

Come read all about it in this issue of the Fellowship News!

[Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] August Fellowship News

2012-09-07 Thread Siko Bouterse
Hi all,

The August edition of the Fellowship News is now available on meta-wiki:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fellowship_News

Project highlights in this issue include:

Dispute Resolution Project — Steven Zhang monitored a trial
implementing changes to the dispute resolution noticeboard on English
Wikipedia this month. An update on his findings is in the Wikipedia
Signpost this week.

Gender Gap Project — Sarah Stierch has started developing the first
phase of a new WikiWomen's Collaborative project, which seeks to
engage and inspire more women to edit using social media and clear
calls to action.

Help Pages Redesign Project — Peter Coombe has created three new
introductory tutorials for the English Wikipedia, covering
referencing, uploading images, and navigating Wikipedia. He also
released the write-up from this summer's in-person usability tests.

Small Wiki Editor Engagement Project — Tanvir Rahman has been building
new step-by-step help pages on Bangla Wikipedia. The help pages will
be connected into a portal page and the new help page system will be
piloted in September.

Teahouse Project — We've been working on improvements for hosts,
including a simplified new host creation process. HostBot was approved
for an extended trial to send out automated invites to new editors,
contributing to a 50% increase in guest participation.

If you're interested in learning more about any of these projects,
please come read about what Wikimedia fellows have been up to this
month!

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Announcing the Fellowship News

2012-07-09 Thread Siko Bouterse
Ah yes, some more context would have been good in my original post :-)

The fellows decided to put together a monthly digest that rolls together
all their updates from their projects in the past month, because we noticed
that until now everyone in our group shares progress and learning in
different ways for each fellowship project, it can take a lot of hunting to
find it all, and isn't always as transparent as we would like. We wanted a
way to start sharing as a group what the fellows "team" is doing. I also
like the idea because those who are interested in the fellows program and
browse our meta pages now have a place to sample what fellows actually do
each month.

We do report some of this in the WMF metrics report each month, and that
won't change (it will just make it easier for me to write, since the info
will be compiled already!) - so to some degree, Lodewijk, I think the
fellowship news has always been incorporated into a report with other cool
stuff being done by staff and volunteers. I would love to see more updates
from others on cool projects, though, and don't want this to be seen as a
split. If this inspires someone to roll this all up together elsewhere that
would be great! We've got to start somewhere still. If is not of interest
to those on the mailing lists - I know there are a lot of things to read
out there already - we don't need to announce each month though, they can
be watched and subscribed to on-wiki.

Confirming Maggie's thoughts, Richard, this report covers all projects
being worked on by current fellows (which can, indeed, be a varied range of
topics!).

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Announcing 2 New Community Fellows

2012-05-23 Thread Siko Bouterse
Hi Richard and all,
I checked into the liability and benefits questions with our HR department
and WMF's Chief of Finance and Administration, and here is some more info
from them:

Individuals who have been awarded Fellowships from the Wikimedia Foundation
are covered by the insurance of the Wikimedia Foundation for work done as
part of their Fellowship agreement.

If they are in the United States, through third party service, the
Wikimedia Foundation is able to provide health insurance. If they reside
outside the United States, then the Wikimedia Foundation provides a
financial supplement to enable the Fellowship recipients to cover their own
health insurance.

If a Fellowship recipient is traveling on behalf of the Wikimedia
Foundation, outside of their home country, then they are provided with
travel accident insurance by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Hope this helps! If you're looking for more specifics on WMF's HR
practices, I might suggest we take the conversation off-list and can try to
put you in touch with someone in a relevant department to advise.

Best,
Siko

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Announcing 2 Community Fellow

2012-05-21 Thread Siko Bouterse
Hi Florence,
I guess I didn't do a very good job addressing these questions in the
earlier thread, so I'll try one more time :-)

Fellowships are temporary roles, so they are not treated as full time staff
positions. They do not receive retirement benefits, and generally the
paperwork setup and associated benefits is not like staff, its more like
contractor, though again the specifics will vary according to fellowship
location, duration, and what US regulation dictates based on these
variables. I am happily ignorant of the liability/insurance side of
things, so perhaps someone from the LCA team can address this if needed.

Is there a particular issue that makes you ask about this, or just
generally curious?

Best wishes,
Siko

[Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Announcing 2 Community Fellows

2012-05-17 Thread Siko Bouterse
It is my great pleasure to introduce two new Community Fellows in the
Wikimedia Fellows Program: Tanvir Rahman and Steven Zhang.

Tanvir Rahman is a Wikimedian who serves the movement locally and
globally, both on- and off-wiki. Tanvir has been an active editor of
Bengali Wikipedia since 2009, he holds administrator rights on
multiple projects and he was elected a steward in 2011. He also
volunteers on the Small Wiki Monitoring Team, the Countervandalism
Network, as an OTRS agent, and is a translator for translatewiki.
Tanvir helped found Wikimedia Bangladesh and organizes local outreach
activities to raise awareness for Wikimedia and bring new editors to
the projects.

In his fellowship project, Tanvir will be experimenting with on-wiki
strategies to encourage and grow the editing community on small
language versions of Wikipedia, with specific focus on the Bengali
Wikipedia. Smaller projects have different needs and challenges than
the large language communities and may require different approaches to
engage with editors. By focusing on a community like Bengali
Wikipedia, which has about 50 active editors per month and sees 10 new
editors per month, Tanvir hopes to learn more about the basic editing
infrastructure needed to encourage new editors in new or small-scale
projects.

Steven Zhang is a Wikipedian with a passion for resolving on-wiki
disputes and helping others do the same. He has been contributing to
the English Wikipedia since 2008 and has been particularly active in
dispute resolution forums, including the Wikipedia Mediation Cabal.
Steven is studying a Certificate IV in Mediation at Open Colleges, and
over the past year he has made it his mission as a volunteer to
recruit more editors to join dispute resolution efforts. In 2011, he
helped create the dispute resolution notice board, an entry point for
mediating disputes on the English Wikipedia. Steven has noted that
there aren’t enough active participants to resolve all of the disputes
that arise on Wikipedia each day, and he believes that dispute
resolution processes could be streamlined to make them more accessible
and efficient to all editors who need them.

For his fellowship project, Steven will be analyzing community
feedback and dispute resolution activity in order to build a deeper
understanding of what is effective and what needs improvement in the
current systems. He will also be developing a guide for new editors
who want to get involved in resolving on-wiki disputes.

Steven and Tanvir will be documenting their work on-wiki and on the
Foundation blog. You can learn more about their projects and how to
get involved by visiting:

Welcome, Tanvir and Steven!

[Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Announcing Haitham Shamma and the Editor Growth and Contribution Program

2012-04-24 Thread Siko Bouterse
It is my great pleasure to announce a new program being launched in
the Wikimedia Foundation’s Global Development department and a new
member of the team: Haitham Shamma has been engaged as program
consultant for the Editor Growth and Contribution Program.  Pending
approval of the U.S. immigration visa process, we intend to bring
Haitham to San Francisco, full-time, as Contribution Research Manager
in the coming months.

Haitham is joining the Wikimedia Foundation in order to support new
editor growth on small-to-medium sized Wikimedia projects, and the
Editor Growth and Contribution Program is a new program being launched
at WMF to focus on the on-wiki needs of these projects.  Haitham will
be partnering with the community to design, test, and implement online
programs to attract and retain more editors in these language
communities. The program aims to increase the number of active editors
on Wikimedia projects by working with the community to understand the
online needs of each project, and taking a data-driven approach to
implement solutions based on these needs. The pilots and programs
on-wiki that the Editor Growth and Contribution Program will use in
order to encourage new editors are intended to serve as a complement
to off-wiki outreach activities already underway in other teams.

WMF is really excited to be working with Haitham because he has been a
very active Wikipedia editor for several years and has an extensive
technical background in research and experimentation.  Soon after he
began editing Arabic Wikipedia, Haitham began implementing systems and
tools to support editors and improve the quality of the Arabic
encyclopedia.  He has a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
and a master’s and PhD in Precision Engineering.  As a volunteer in
the Arabic community, he has recently been helping with WMF’s Arabic
Language Initiative.  Haitham speaks English, Arabic, and Japanese, as
well as some German, French, and Chinese.  He’s also no stranger to
MediaWiki, C++, Java, Python, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Haitham will be beginning his work with the Arabic Wikipedia
community, and based on what is learned there, he’ll be moving into
other languages and geographies soon.  The Editor Growth and
Contribution Program will be connecting with the Fundraising team to
build contribution campaigns that encourage readers to become editors,
taking lessons learned from fellowship projects and the new Editor
Engagement Experiment team’s work, and partnering with each target
language community to figure out what approaches work best to support
editor growth in a given language, culture, and size.

Some initial documentation and FAQs about the program are being
developed on meta wiki:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Editor_Growth_and_Contribution_Program

We’re looking forward to everyone’s input and feedback there.
Meanwhile, please join me in welcoming Haitham!

[Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Announcing Community Fellow Peter Coombe

2012-04-12 Thread Siko Bouterse
It is my pleasure to introduce our newest Wikimedia Community Fellow of
2012, Peter Coombe. As a fellow, Pete will be working with the community to
improve help documentation on English Wikipedia. He’ll be leading a 6 month
effort and taking a data-driven approach to reorganize and rewrite key help
pages in order to make them more usable for new and experienced editors
alike.

Pete comes to the fellowships program with an impressive resume. He’s been
editing English Wikipedia as The
wub<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:The_wub>since 2005, he’s an
admin with over 75,000 global edits, and an active
member of Wikimedia UK. Pete volunteered on the Social Media Team in the
2010 Fundraiser, and worked as a Production Coordinator in 2011. He’s got a
B.A. and M.Sci. with honors in Natural Sciences from the University of
Cambridge, and much experience breaking down complex topics into clear
written information. He’s participated twice in a program at Cambridge to
create online teaching and learning modules on advanced materials science
and engineering topics. He’s also worked at The Helpful Book Company,
publishing books that teach senior citizens how to use computers.

Pete’s talent for making the complex seem simple, combined with his
experience A/B testing in the fundraiser and 7 years editing Wikipedia,
make him a great fit for his fellowship project. To follow his work or get
involved in the redesign project, please visit his project
page<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Help_pages_redesign_project>.
More info about Pete and his project are also on the WMF
blog<http://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/04/12/help-is-on-the-way-announcing-community-fellow-peter-coombe/>.
Welcome, Pete!
