Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Conference[1] 2015

2014-11-14 Thread Asaf Bartov
Dear colleagues,

Thank you to all who volunteered to serve on programme team[1].

Continuing my informal facilitation of this team, I will be contacting the
team off-list to schedule a kick-off call to discuss how to go about
planning this event, so as to maximize the benefit to the movement. My own
preference is for materials to be continually updated and available on
Meta, so as to allow casual participation or ad-hoc comments by anyone
interested (whether or not they are part of a recognized movement
organization).

Watch the event pages on Meta to keep up. I will also update this list on
major milestones as they take place (perhaps: selection of major themes,
draft programme, final schedule). I'm sure I speak for the team when I say
we welcome your input on any and all aspects of the programme team's work.

I look forward to a productive event.

Cheers,

   A.

Reminder: We'd like to finalize the Wikimedia Conference 2015 Program Team
by Nov 10th. If you'd like to help craft a high-quality program to make
sure we make the most of this important (and expensive) face-to-face

In particular, at least one team member from a smaller or newer chapter
would be great!

2014-10-20 Thread Asaf Bartov
It seems this is uncontroversial, so Ad's super-bold edit can be taken to
finalize the venue. Thanks again, WMCH! :)

I have boldly taken another step forward, and drafted a description for the
program team's work, here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2015/Programme_team

Neither I nor WMF are trying to exert undue control over this process;
rather, I am moving this forward in good faith and relying on other people
to be equally bold in editing (or reverting!) anything I've stated there.

Looking forward to making this the most productive WMCON[1] ever! :)

2014-10-16 Thread Balázs Viczián
imo (but maybe I'm sitting on the wrong direction on this horse) but once
we have a program it can be installed to any suitable location.

I think it would be great moving that way. WMF and a few chapters have
dedicated people for event organizing, why not use them. Bidding would be
then for _hosting only_, what I am sure would generate dozens of
applications per event.

Not to mention how much easier would it be to keep up the consistency and
the continuity (contentwise) of the events.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Conference[1] 2015

2014-10-15 Thread Pine W
Hi,

I can speak only in a personal capacity.

My occasional readings of information about WMCH have been positive. I
anticipate that visa problems will be no greater than they were at
Wikimania London. The admittedly limited information about the bid sounds
reasonable, as far as it goes. I assume that there will be a thorough
review of the budget and program by WMF and WMCH to ensure that the ROIs
for both organizations are reasonable. It seems to me that *if* this
conference is to be held (I am still a bit skeptical that having this
conference separate from Wikimania makes financial sense), that it is
reasonable to proceed with WMCH as host.

Perhaps the name, scope, purpose, timing, and outcomes of this conference
from past years and for the future can be discussed at the WMCH event.

My understanding is that there is not a community committee that reviews
bids for this conference and that the Chapters Association is likely to
remain in a deep freeze; if the location of this conference is subject to
community consensus, I would vote to support the WMCH bid subject to the
conditions and suggestions I made elsewhere in this email.

Thank you WMCH for offering to host.

Pine
