XP when the rollback was done due to issues with Turbo C++ and
 Microsoft COBOL compiler.

There's no question of fault, and no need to take it that way. Every
journey needs that first step. However, your doubts have been addressed in
many different scenarios before, and really comes across more as FUD than
likely reality. You will probably be surprised. Having said which, it is
entirely possible that there are no FOSS service agencies in your area, who
could walk you (ie the college, details depending on how the upgrade is
mutually planned) through it. If you can describe where the college is,
perhaps the right persons can get in touch, and if this does not work out,
then you have the status quo in any case.

As a bonus, most machines that today run XP were designed a while back, and
it is very possible that the switch will come with tangible efficiency
 benefits.

have the WMF internal kickoff, and I hope we will be able to communicate

  Heya all,
This should've come in elaier but didn't as my lab was shut.

And Noopur, the only other Wikipedian who asked about this meet.

Our meetup was held at the KG Inst. of Tech [KITE] who offered us an
A/C presentation hall for this event.
KITE, is a part of KG Information Systems Ltd, one of the city's most
  respected IT establishments.
The meetup space was offered by Mr. Ashok Bkathavatsalam himself, the
MD of KGISL, who in turn was told about this meet by Gautam John and
  Venkat Mangudi. Thanks you two.

  The meetup started at 11am.

We had ~14-15 attendees, out of which 8 or 9 were part of ILUGC Pondy
  [Indian Linux User Group Puducherry].
One Wikipedian saw the link to the meetup on my signature on an online
forum SkyScraperCity and came from Chennai.
Bala Jeyaraman, aka Sodabottle joined me a few minutes into the meetup
and it was him who spoke for the rest of the day.
Pre lunch, we basically spoke on how and why the Wikipedia model
worked, the principles of the project, with Bala using the age old
debate of whether Coimbatore or Madurai was the second largest city in
Tamil Nadu as an example for verifiability.

Bala explained the ease of typing in Tamil, etc.

Post lunch, we were joined by two faculty members of KITE, while Mr.
Ashok himself stepped in. Interestingly, he himself has an account on
the English Wikipedia and contributes too.

The meetup ended at around 4, we took a few photos. I shall ask
  Prasanna to upload them soon.

It was a success, there were three existing Wikipedians, and the rest
were interested newcomers. I wouldn't call it an academy though.

We've not scheduled a meetup for January yet, as the most probable
date is 15th Jan [Wikipedia Day] because both Bala and I won't be in
town. If anyone from the chapter/foundation can help lead it, I can
get people to attend and myself attend virtually thru Skype or so from
  Kakinada.

  Comments, suggestions most welcome.

2011-12-15 Thread Srikanth Ramakrishnan
Heya,
I logged into Facebook after a week to find out that Prasanna has psoted a
detailed report on the meetup facebook event page.
The link to the page is on the meetup page on Meta.
Perhaps, Bala, Subha or Ansuman could copy it here
It would explain things from a newcomers point of view.

And Noopur, the only other Wikipedian who asked about this meet.

Our meetup was held at the KG Inst. of Tech [KITE] who offered us an
A/C presentation hall for this event.
KITE, is a part of KG Information Systems Ltd, one of the city's
 most
   respected IT establishments.
The meetup space was offered by Mr. Ashok Bkathavatsalam himself,
 the
MD of KGISL, who in turn was told about this meet by Gautam John and
   Venkat Mangudi. Thanks you two.

   The meetup started at 11am.

We had ~14-15 attendees, out of which 8 or 9 were part of ILUGC
 Pondy
   [Indian Linux User Group Puducherry].
One Wikipedian saw the link to the meetup on my signature on an
 online
forum SkyScraperCity and came from Chennai.
Bala Jeyaraman, aka Sodabottle joined me a few minutes into the
 meetup
and it was him who spoke for the rest of the day.
Pre lunch, we basically spoke on how and why the Wikipedia model
worked, the principles of the project, with Bala using the age old
debate of whether Coimbatore or Madurai was the second largest city
 in
Tamil Nadu as an example for verifiability.

Bala explained the ease of typing in Tamil, etc.

Post lunch, we were joined by two faculty members of KITE, while Mr.
Ashok himself stepped in. Interestingly, he himself has an account
 on
the English Wikipedia and contributes too.

The meetup ended at around 4, we took a few photos. I shall ask
   Prasanna to upload them soon.

It was a success, there were three existing Wikipedians, and the
 rest
were interested newcomers. I wouldn't call it an academy though.

We've not scheduled a meetup for January yet, as the most probable
date is 15th Jan [Wikipedia Day] because both Bala and I won't be in
town. If anyone from the chapter/foundation can help lead it, I can
get people to attend and myself attend virtually thru Skype or so
 from
   Kakinada.

   Comments, suggestions most welcome.

All brickbats my way, bouquets to Bala please.

Here i share what happened in Wikipedia meet up held at coimbatore:

We arrived there at coimbatore by early morning and joined with new friends
 at coimbatore, Karthikeyan
 Savithrihttp://www.facebook.com/kalakkumkarthikeyanwho received us
there with warm welcome and we entered into KGiSL campus
around 11 am and the event started only after we arrived there.

 1. Srikanth Ramakrishnan
 http://www.facebook.com/srikanth.ramakrishnanwho was the first
speaker to start with meet up, shared his
experience with us and to tell about him, he is editing wikipedia articles
right from the age of 13 (8th standard) and now he has got around 10,000
articles being edited in the span of 6.5 years.

 2. Arrived Mr. Bala, Admin and an active wikipedian especially handling
Tamil section of wikipedia and he was an programmer in an MNC and now he is
self-employed. Mr. Bala started with the basics of wikipedia and covered
 the following:
 i. What is wikipedia?
ii. Wikipeida - by the people, of the people and for the people.
iii. Advantage of wikipedia being let open for public editing.
iv. Demo on how to become a user, contributor to wikipedia.
 v. General and basic rules for starting and writing an article with proper
 reference.
vi. Tamizh wiki oodaga(media) poati - any one can participate and submit
your own photography regarding Tamizh and its culture, people ect. and you
have the chance to win US. 200$
vii. Tools like wikimedia (Mediawiki, wiki source, etc.) are discussed.
viii. Technical part of wikipedia is discussed.

Finally we had a Photo-session and greeted each other and it was good time
together and we gained knowledge over how to contribute the above things
and soon after at the evening we created a account for us in wikipedia..
and now roaming around with camera in hand :p

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Summary and perspectives from Discussions with Indic language wikimedians - 2011

2011-12-16 Thread Srikanth Ramakrishnan
 increase, we will
get even more Indic readers. We don't need to do anything to attract
readers. However, we need to do *everything* to keep them coming back by
increasing article count while religiously maintaining and increasing
article quality and size of community.

I would love to hear your thoughts and views on these suggestions.

The next stage of my work is going to be to speak directly with various
communities in village pumps itself. I will try and make these as relevant
and specific to individual communities - and also to share some ideas which
have relevance across similar communities. For instance, some ideas will
be similar to all communities with less than 25 active editors. I also
want to try and identify potential areas of support that India Programs
could work closely with communities on. The idea is to support community
across languages. We would like to identify a very limited (1 or 2) pilots
of a very controlled nature (in terms of scale) that we would like to
collaboratively design with respective communities. Given the efforts that
will be required in any pilot (even if it is of a relatively small scale),
we believe that there needs to be a certain basic level of community size
and collaboration to be able handle such pilots.

I will be sharing this mail on the various local language / local town
mailing lists as well as the respective language village pumps. I look
 forward to hearing your views.

I placed the content of this mail in metawiki also. It is here:

Prad, Noopur, I'm with you on this one. I think what we need to do is,
create a category on the Commons, customise the Upload Wizard if
needed, set up a committee to check for copyright violations, create a
page on Meta, translate it into every language, get your cameras,
phones ready, stock up on film rolls and Memory Cards, batteries, etc.
See, it's that simple. Let's not wait for Chapter or Foundation, and

 To: wmf...@lists.wikimedia.org, Wikimedia developers
 wikitec...@lists.wikimedia.org

 Greetings all,

The Mobile and Special Projects department is pleased to announce the
addition of two new contractors to the team: Yuvaraj Pandian and Max
 Seminik.

Yuvaraj Pandian or Yuvi as we gotten to know him was one of our 2011
Google Summer of Code students. During GSoC he worked with Arthur
Richards on porting the Wikipedia 1.0 bot to a PHP extension named
Selection Sifter. This was in important offline project as it allowed
us to better support and extend our offline tool chains. Previous to
this he had been active in the busroutes.in community where users
@logic and @planemad motivated him to come on and help the Wikimedia
community. One of his early Wikimedia project memories includes the
tawiki community discussing the ShortUrl extension. He found the
entire channel so lively and helpful that he applied for GSoC.

Yuvi will be working for us remotely while on a six month sabbatical
from KCG College of Technology, India. He'll be extending the Android
app, enhancing MobileFrontend, and working with our various offline
efforts to further the reach of the projects. You can find him on irc
 under the nick 'yuviapanda' .

Max Semink has been an active MediaWiki contributor since 2009. He's
recently been most involved in developing the API Sandbox for
MediaWiki. An extension that allows any user to easily create complex
API queries through a visual interface. When not hacking on MediaWiki,
Max has been busy developing C++ software for embedded systems in the
railroad industry. While train switching has captured the majority of
his recent developer cycles, he's super eager to change direction and
focus his full time efforts on MediaWiki.

Max will be continuing his interest in the API by helping us improve
and extend its use within mobile. He'll be adding a proper API to
MobileFrontend, extending support for GPS, and in general moving the
API forward for our mobile clients. Max will be working for us
remotely and can be found under the nick 'MaxSem' .

It's great to be able to see two active community members be able to
 join us full time.

Please join me in (re)-welcoming Yuvi and Max!

working on Indic space (translation, content creation, technology). Their
work will directly or indirectly reach more people outside wikimedia

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] What's in it for me?

2011-12-19 Thread Srikanth Ramakrishnan
 be
any number from the 500 million who read wikipedia every month! You can
show your article to you mother and grandfather and friends! If you upload
pictures to Wikimedia Commons, you will have an audience so much bigger than
the 500 friends on Facebook who will see it. So many more can see your
 talents and appreciate your work!
It'll boost your chances in admissions or scholarships or placements.
Imagine if you are a mechanical engineer and you are one of 100 students in
your batch applying for jobs with the best engineering companies who come to
campus. Everyone is likely to submit a resume saying they are the greatest
engineer ever born - but it's difficult for any one to stand out and shine.
If you were to put a line in your resume that you have edited 5 articles on
heating and cooling systems, there is a very high probability that this
would jump out at the recruitment team of the companies and the will
actually read your article (if they haven't already.)
It can be so much fun! You can make new friends - from all over the world..
You can write about subjects that you are interested in (whether it is
movies or your hometown or sarees or mythology or cricket or whatever!) It
think it is really important that we drive this message as passionately as
we can because this is something that can resonate so loud and for so long!

 Academia - Faculty Education Institutions

Students with all the above result in much more motivated classes. One
thing that teachers constantly say is that they one thing they want is
engaged students. I've had teachers tell me that if they are in a class and
they see their students involved and trying to learn and active, it is the
best thing that can happen to them - and the rest of their day goes well!
It improves your individual and college's academic reputation. In the
Indian context where there is relatively lower emphasis on academic research
papers by faculty members, supporting your students on Wikipedia articles
helps you (rightfully) claim that you contributed to these articles. That
increases your academic standing and helps attract better students and
faculty and partnerships and recruiting companies.
It supports the advancement of education - for students in your class and
colleges and around the world. You have devoted your lives to education and
this is a great way of promoting it.

I wanted to share my perspectives because I really believe that the why
 needs to be addressed.

Thanks for starting a great message thread, Srikanth.

True that. While Hindi and Tamil have always been at an advantage due
to them being the first two Indic languages to be embraced by the tech

My 2.5 year old dual SIM phone from FLY has Hindi support. Can show
all the menus in Hindi, can send/receive SMS in Hindi.

My earlier Nokia phone (purchased about 6 years back) also had Hindi

Some of the low cost printers-inkjet, laser ones also have Indic

A good idea no doubt, but I think the detecting which state the user
comes from part is a small road block. While Google Mail has been
showing which state the IP is from in the logins section, I think the

though it may seem obvious at first that a person who is using his or

 I tried that. twice.

Back in 2010, we had banners pointing to Indic wikis, with messages like,
there is a wiki in your language you can edit. Then it lead to landing
pages with lists of indic language wikis.

 http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising_2010/IN/Welcome

 http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/List_of_Indian_language_projects

This banner ran for close to 2 months in late 2010 and early 2011. I think
WMF staff might have tried it again during the year.

Conclusion, it did not make a dent. Most people dismissed the banners, and
never clicked, those that did, never followed to edit. It made little to
 no
difference in the visitor or editor stats for the period.

Welcome to the world finally! Go read the bug[1] for a start. In summary
i18n team feels the purpose of extension gets defeated if its not set as
default. I tried convincing them for days it wont get defeated, but this is
a PoV debate and solution remains at heart :). If you feel having the
default fonts with hinting issue will affect many more people than it would
benefit(In case of Tamil it was over 10x), then file a bug for removing
WebFonts for or wp. But what next? 2 options.

 1. If fonts are bad and have hinting issues, {{SOFIXIT}} . Suggest to
Santhosh what are the issues, where it could get better, he will try his
best and do as much as he can do. We did the same for Tamil, Lohit-Tamil is
improved than what upstream gave, but there is a limitation here as to how
much Santhosh can help since he is not a professional typographer and you
may not be satisfied very much with font even after the exercise (like we
are). There is also delivery issue which needs to be sorted if we are going
to go this way since Win 7, most linux OS dont have hinting issue but win
 xp has it.

 2. Get more free fonts. Look out for other free(ly licensed) fonts,
convince people to release fonts under free license.Create a new
font(Easier said than done, but its not Impossible). Beg,Borrow (no Steal
doesnt apply here :D, Acquire probably applies in case money is only thing
stopping, then a reasonable grant request might help). In short get
alternative fonts which can be used.

People may not know the IP address from the venue before they start

Just setup a page where such IPs can be put up and a bot checks them
every 1-2 hours or so and enables IPs for 3-4 days. Authorisations for
specific users who are co-ordinating the event can be given well in
advance to add such IP entries.

That will help reduce communication and delay due to time zone related
 things.

This will be the best approach. Pradeep and Pranav (Kundan and I were
present, among others) had faced exactly this problem at the first attempt
to run the WikiAcademy in Mumbai. For a newbie academy, it is at least an
hour or so before one gets around to talking about setting up new
 accounts.

Srikanth, Android is not like Windows, where you get the latest
version and install. You can upgrade only if your device manufacturer
offers one. My dads Dell runs on 2.1 which cannot be upgraded. My
sister uses an Optimus which runs on 2.2 and can be upgraded to 2.3.
Also, Android is no longer ELITE. Android devices are available for as
low as 6k. The Dell, I mentioned earlier now retails for less than 6K.

Jamnagar. The Museum is superb with different variety of exhibits of
Jamnagar like stone excavations, rifles, canons, different pictures to
show. Thus I decided to capture those and put on commons, I am still in
midst of processing many more images and upload them, meanwhile I have
 created a Galleryhttp://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Lakhota_Museum_Jamnagar
 on
commons. Please do have a look at it and give your valuable
 suggestions/thoughts.
I was charged Rs 100/- by the Museum authority and also have the receipt
of it, thus they allow to take photographs.
Also one interesting thing was going on in Museum, there was one other
professional photographer taking close up shots with proper background and
lighting of each and every artifact with the help of few other people of
museum, on inquiring it, I came to know that Government has asked to
digitize the whole museum, and thus he got one of the contracts to
photograph them, but sadly all of them will be copyrighted.

Once again the link to my gallery is
 http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Lakhota_Museum_Jamnagar.

Hoping to hear from all of you.

Look at the United States. While agreed, NASA pics always get
featured, it's purely because they're public. Works done by Soldiers
on duty, including photographs of concerts automatically become public
domain. And we here have a government that can't even release Census
data into the Public Domain.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [Commons] Commons and the India relation

On Wed, Dec 28, 2011 at 4:00 PM, Srikanth Ramakrishnan
 rsrikant...@gmail.com wrote:

 Heya,

so I went about doing some homework on the Commons and it's usage from
 both sides in India.

Here is what I cam across.

This isn't related at all to my previous mail

For uploads, Commons is hardly used in India.

 Major reasons are:

1 The ND/NC Conflict, or the I want my Picture on Wikipedia, but don't
 want it to be edited.

Most people want their content on Wikipedia, [not Commons, but Wikipedia],
but don't want it to be edited. I've come across numerous of these cases
 on
 Flickr and Picasa.

2 Isn't Wikimedia a part of Wikipedia? How did you get your images out
 there?

People are curious. They think that Wikimedia is part of Wikipedia and
that only select stuff lands up there.

Again, as Bala stated in Coimbatore, this myth needs to be explained. Wiki
is for the people, of the people, by the people.

 3 No comments.

A LOT of people want to contribute, but don't, simply because one can't
comment on pictures on the Commons. I suggest that they upload to Flickr,
release it under a Commons Compatible licence, and let FlickrBot take
 over.

 4 Photographs? What?

Most people are unaware that the Commons can also host Audio and Video.
 Awareness is needed.

5 My file isn't getting uploaded [Audio and Video]

Most people end up using Propriety formats such as *.mp3, *.aac *.avi and
*.mpg. They don't know or don't want to convert it to *.ogg and *.ogv.
Again, awareness is the only solution.

Around six months ago, F-Secure had stated that Facebook accounts for 4%
of all uploaded images. My estimation is that atleast 10% of these images
 ALSO exists on the Commons.

I've been trying to spread awareness about the Commons. Literally
preaching about it in my lab, cyber cafes, and the likes.

Alternatively, I've been trying to get people interested in the matter on
Twitter [My test bed]. Those following me [and NOT too] would know about
 this.

 Others can look up http://t.co/lEwZkuWW

The only things currently catalysing contributions to the Commons are:

 1 TamilWiki Media Contest.

 2 Wikipedia Takes Cities.

 3 Various Photowalks.

4 The upcoming Wiki Loves Monuments [It will]

Do let me know what your thoughts on this matter are.

 Regards,

 Srikanth Ramakrishnan.

I agree with Mr. Mohandas [not Pai] above. Incentives for Wiki takes
Cities is a big NO NO. And as for Flickr donation, I'm all for it.
During WP taketh Chennai, we had a ton of Flickr donations, which
Logic and Ganesh uploaded. Infact, we had a mini backlog which is why
I uploaded six. If we have Flickr or Picasa donations this time too, I
don't minding sitting and sorting before uploading, provided it
happens before Jan 17th.
