I may be mistaken, but it looks like lately it has several spam posts, such

[Wikimediaindia-l] default time zones for projects in languages of India

Hi,

Some Wikimedia projects in languages of India have Indian time defined as
the default time zone. Some don't. For precise info see:
http://noc.wikimedia.org/conf/highlight.php?file=InitialiseSettings.php

Search that file for wgLocaltimezone. You'll see that some projects have
Asia/Kolkata as the timezone, for example guwiki (Gujarati Wikipedia),
but some don't appear at all, which means that their default timezone is
UTC. So for example if one goes to recent changes on the Assamese
Wikisource, then the times will show by default in IST, but on Assamese
Wikipedia it will be UTC.

I guess that at least some of the projects will want to switch to the
timezone of India. It's easy to do - a line for each project needs to be
added for each site, but this should come in as requests from each site's
community.

If you have a few minutes, please check whether your favorite Wikimedia
uses the appropriate default time zone. If it doesn't, please bring this up
for community discussion, and if the community agrees, please request to
change it in Bugzilla (or just submit a patch directly to Gerrit).

If you need any technical explanation (for example, if you have no idea how
to work with Bugzilla and Gerrit), I am available for questions.

Oh, thanks for bringing that up.
The Common Locale Data Repository (CLDR) has information about date formats
for different languages and countries. MediaWiki already uses the CLDR for
some information, and can possibly use it for date formats as well. I'll
pass this on to the engineers.

 Apart from this, the date formats also needs to be standardised.
 In India, we use dd/mm/yy as default. Whereas most editors outside
 India (but editing Indian languages wiki) use mm/dd/yy format. This
 cause huge confusions. eg. 09/10/14 is 09 Oct 14 or 10 Sep 14. A
 simpler and better way could be to standardise the display on the
 pages to dd-mmm- date formats and hh:mm:ss am/pm local timezone.
 This could be same for any IP based editing but at the same time,
 logged in users should have their own preferences in their settings.

 Not sure how much this is already implemented. If not done earlier,
 could be taken up for implementation.

 Dear all,

 This is a great success to share the effort of Shiju and other
 Malayalam Wikimedians to bring Samkshepa Vedartham, the first
 Malayalam book online. This is a news article which has come on The
 Times of India and copyrighted.[1]

 THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: From a college library in Bangalore, a fragile
 copy of the first book printed in Malayalam -- SampkshepaVedartham --
 has made a leap to eternity. Thanks to efforts by
 MalayalamWikipedians, the book printed in 1772 and kept in Dharmaram
 College in Bangalore is now available free on the internet, without
 any copyright restriction.

 The scanned copy of 'Sampkshepa Vedartham or Nasranikal Okkeyum
 Ariyendunna Sampkshepa Vedartham' will be a major source of
 information for those interested in the history and development of
 Malayalam script. The book by Italian priest Clement Peanices is in
 the form of Christian religious teaching in question-answer format.
 The first edition of the book was printed using Malayalam types in
 Rome in 1772 and was brought to the state in 1774.

 A scanned copy of 'Albhabetum Grandonico Malabaricum', the first book
 to use Malayalam types, is already available for public use. It is
 believed that the Malayalam portion of this Latin book was printed
 using the movable types made to print 'Sampkshepa Vedartham'.

 Shiju Alex, an active Wikipedian, had taken the initiative to bring
 out 'Sampkshepa Vedartham' on the internet with the support of other
 members of Malayalam Wikipedia. Ironically, one of the oldest copies
 of the book is housed in the Kerala university library. Though it was
 digitized using the state grant, it is not available for public use.

 Sampkshepa Vedartham was printed almost 241 years ago. The book gives
 insights into the old type of Malayalam numerals. No space is left
 between words. Also signs, such as full stops, are not used between
 sentences, Alex said. He said the scanned copy of the book has been
 uploaded on archives.org, where interested people can read it online
 or download the PDF format. We have begun steps to upload it in
 Wikipedia commons (an online repository of media files). A digitized
 version will also be available in Malayalam Wikisource, he added.

Very often gadgets are not just JavaScript pages. They very often
depend on other templates and styles that exist in a wiki, and very
often reflect a policy or a common practice that is specific to a
given wiki, that does not necessarily fit another. For example, the
Twinkle gadget has useful tools for the English Wikipedia, but it is
bound very tightly to English Wikipedia's deletion policies, warning
templates, etc. It may, theoretically, be adapted to other projects,
but the workflows may be very different, so it won't be enough to just
copy the JavaScript.

That's the kind of thing that Priyanka Nag is working on in the OPW
program, and I'm sure that she'll have a lot more to tell.

Thank you very much for this article. Information about the usage of
the languages of India in different social contexts, and especially in
education, is very useful for my work.

The impression that I had about the state of local languages in India
is that English is used a lot even though not everybody knows it
sufficiently. This articles more or less confirms this impression and
substantiates it with data. It was also very interesting to read about
the concept of homolinguality.

I can't say this strongly enough: I'd love to see more research of
this kind coming from Wikimedia India, CIS, and other organizations in
the field.

Hi Nikhil, and everyone else,

I thought about writing a detailed reply about how that article is
exaggerated (*Nobody* wants to edit anymore? Really, nobody?), and
how the problems that you describe are just one side of the story
(because the bureaucracy may be annoying, but it's a necessary evil,
bla, bla, bla), but I decided to write something else:

You don't like the over-bureaucratic English Wikipedia?
Fine.
Do you know a language other than English? If you're in India, then
you probably do.
Go to the Wikipedia in that language and edit it.
It may have some issues, too - bureaucracy, political arguments,
wheel wars - but these issues are guaranteed to be smaller that they
are in the English Wikipedia.

And besides, Wikipedia in ANY language other than English needs more
articles, more writers, and more love. The people who speak that
language will appreciate you immensely. Maybe they won't tell you
directly that they appreciate it immensely, but I promise you that
they will.

 A new study published in the American Behavioral Science Journal by former
 Wikimedia Fellows says Wikipedia has lost some 30 percent of its
 English-language editors since 2006, as a result of off-putting automated
 rejections, restrictive new rules, and controlling older editors.

 What was most surprising was the scale of the problem, lead researcher
 Aaron Halfaker told the Daily Dot.

 Founded in 2001, Wikipedia was a first-of-its-kind experiment in online
 collaboration. Anyone who desired could sign up and become an editor,
 contributing to any of the site's entries, which now include more than 23
 million topics. This openness allowed Wikipedia to cover a much wider range
 of subjects than a traditional encyclopedia, but it also made the project a
 source of criticism for its frequency of misinformation, either through
 accidental mistakes or deliberate vandalism.

 That's why Wikipedia instituted new rules in 2007 to improve the quality of
 information, but according to Halfaker, these same rules have driven away
 more than just the unwanted vandals.

 In 2006, only about 6 percent of quality new editors had their
 contributions rejected—a.k.a. reverted in Wikipedia lingo. In 2010, the
 number of contributions by new editors were being reverted at a rate of
 1-in-4 by senior editors and the site's own automated response systems.

 Halfaker said that as a result, only about 11 percent of new editors have
 been staying on past their first two months, driving down the total number
 of contributors to the site. He said part of that has to do with the nasty
 initial experience many new editors have.

 If you're a new Wikipedia editor, the first message you get is usually from
 a bot or a semi-automated editing tool. It'll warn you of such issues as
 lack of sources or blanking and is designed to deter vandals or
 bad-faith editors.

 I recently blogged a rant about this myself:

 Go a little easy on people who are starting to contribute; love,
 encourage and forgive them instead of being so critical and punishing.
 Create page-tags/templates that can illustrate the fact that it's a
 work-in-progress, assign this status by default on new articles so a
 newbie isn't expected to already have advanced skills (which is a
 stupid, stupid thing wikipedia is doing right now. Adding references and
 templates is difficult, period. Don't expect a person with less than 50
 edit counts to know or even want to learn about it). When a visitor
 comes at a page, maybe an age or number of edits can be displayed at the
 top to convey an idea of how mature or immature the article is.

 Having permanent-tenure editors is as bad an idea as having permanent
 bureaucrats or government leaders: There should be limited terms and
 off-periods between them and retirement times; that will be good for the
 editing community and will encourage editors to pass the baton on rather
 than be in a permanent status contest of entrenchment, edit-counts,
 deletions etc that I see at present. I got totally turned off at the
 last wikipedia meetup I attended in my city when people started showing
 off their edit-counts and were treating them like army medals. Many of

It is coming at the right right time. It's starting up, and it needs
localization. I wrote why its localization is especially important here:

That post also has relevant links.

It's localization is EASY, because there aren't so many strings to
translate, but its influence is going to be very large. If all goes
according to the plan, in a few months Wikidata will become a repository of
useful statistical data about many subjects - countries, populations, dates
of birth and death, etc. So, while the data is pretty much the same for
everybody, the names of the data properties, such as population, must be
translated to all languages. Property names cannot be translated yet, but a
crucial first step towards making this possible is to translate the
Wikibase extension, which is the technical framework of Wikidata.

Before you approach this, I also strongly suggest to at least read the
following doc:

 world where everyone could freely pool knowledge even without sharing a
 common language? Wikidata is set to do all this, and more.



 Wikidata, deployed in October this year, is the newest project by the
 Wikimedia Foundation, the organisation that runs Wikipedia and its sister
 projects. It is a semantic, multilingual, structured database that anyone
 can read and edit. It is machine readable, which makes searching, sorting
 and handling of data efficient and fast. Like with its siblings, Wikidata’s
 content and software are published under a free license.



 *Central repository of links*

 Wikidata aims to streamline Wikipedia’s rich but chaotic linking
 structure. Every Wikipedia page has ‘interwiki links’ that link it to other
 Wikipedia pages. ‘Interlanguage links’ connect pages to other pages on the
 same topic published on Wikipedias in different languages, creating a mesh
 of links. With around 23 million articles in 285 languages, the linking

 countries with highest GDP in Asia’ you wouldn’t quickly reach the relevant
 information even though it exists in these lists. Wikidata will
 automatically create a user-queried list to answer semantic queries such
 as, “What were the ten countries with highest GDP in Asia last year?”



 Konarak Ratnakar, who has registered over 8,000 edits on Wikidata, says, *“I
 found that Wikidata had very few India-related entries. So I started adding

other sources that don't make this distinction, for example the
Unicode Consortium's documents about South Asian scripts:

Not necessarily.

According to Meriam-Webster, the adjective Indic may refer to
Indo-Aryan and to all of India. Moreover, Indic scripts refers to
all Brahmic scripts, and that is the most common term today.

The English Wikipedia redirected [[Indic languages]] to [[Indo-Aryan
languages]], but that was a mistake, and I just fixed it.

 Hence, bunching the entire system of Dravidian languages together with the
 Indo-Aryan languages in India may seem derogatory to some, and reasonably
 so.

No, not derogatory. At worst, it's ambiguous.

Making up bad connotations for normal words is not so constructive.

 referring to the Indus Valley Civilization, which did not stretch as far as
 Deccan India where the Dravidian family of languages have been prevalent.
 The distinction between the Indic languages and Dravidian languages is an
 important one, and they should not be confused to be one and the same.

So are the words India and Indian. If this logic is true, then the
English name of the Republic of India, and the name of this mailing
list would be derogatory as well. Evidently, to most people they
aren't.

Nobody here is dismissing Dravidian languages. Everybody understands
that they are distinct. It's just that the word Indic often refers
to them, too. When the context and the meaning may be unclear, use
Indo-Aryan and Dravidian.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Narayam - is your language supported well?

Hello,

A few months ago the Localization team of the Wikimedia Foundation
enabled the Narayam extension in some projects in Indic languages and
also in the Incubator.

We know that in projects in some languages it is actively used. Some
projects, for example Telugu, Kannada, Marathi and Bengali, also asked
for fixes, which we are happy to make. We know less about other
projects, however.

Can you tell us, please:

* If Narayam is already used in your language: Is it good? Does it
have all the characters? Is it easy to use? Is it documented well?
Does it help people to create more content?

* If Narayam is not used in your language: Why not? Do you think that
it is not needed? Or is it needed, but the current layout is buggy?

It's possible, of course, that the journalist who wrote the article
didn't quite understand it himself. It happens very often...

[Wikimediaindia-l] [[Telugu language]] article in the English Wikipedia

The English Wikipedia article about Telugu, one of the most important
languages in India, is not so great. It has many grammar mistakes and
confusing sentences such as Etymology is Telugu language originated
in Rajamahendri now Rajahmundry. First telugu poet Nannayya gave
Telugu a script, which made it a language.

It also suffered from some revert wars recently, which were not
properly resolved.

Is there anybody here who knows Telugu well and can improve that article?

(Of course, improvements in articles about other languages of India
are just as welcome. I just noticed this one by coincidence.)

The most comprehensive way to resolve this issue would be to add a
feature that allows a trusted user, like a bureaucrat, to temporarily
lift this throttling for such events. I requested it here:

 ordinarily there's a cap on the number of accounts that can be created
 from one IP address in a single day.  But there's a way to ask for a
 temporary removal of that restriction.  The Foundation's Maggie Dennis

We just enabled a new beta version of the Punjabi Gurnukhi
transliteration keyboard layout in translatewiki.net:

What's new?
* Full documentation! So you won't have to wonder how to type every letter.
* Some bugs were fixed, thanks to reports from testers.
* All Unicode Gurnukhi characters are supposed to be supported.

Please, if you know Punjabi, go to

you can type comfortably.

If you know Punjabi, but you find that the keyboard is not convenient,
that some letters are missing or that the documentation is incomplete,
unclear or wrong, please let me know.

We want to enable this keyboard on the Punjabi Wikipedia as soon as
possible, because we believe that it is much better than the keyboard
that is currently enabled there.

I forgot to document it, but it is actually already possible to type
these characters. Use '.' for '।' and '..' for '॥'.

I actually thought about these. I included 'ੜ', because the Unicode
document said that it's a unique Gurmukhi letter, but as far as I

What do you mean by share reference? Are you offering to spread the
link to your friends? If you are, then Yes, certainly! I want to get
this tested by as many people as possible, and then to install it in
the Punjabi Wikipedia so that it will be easier to write there.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Do you know Punjabi? Please test Punjabi typing!

Hello,

If you know Punjabi (Gurmukhi), your help is needed in testing the new
input method we developed.

At http://www.translatewiki.net we have deployed three input methods
for Punjabi - InScript, Phonetic and Transliteration.

I am especially curious about the Transliteration method. Can anybody
please test it? It is similar to the way the Punjabi Wikipedia works
now, but it's supposed to be more complete. Use M for bindi, NN for
tippi and z for addak.

I believe that this input method is better than what the Punjabi
Wikipedia uses currently, because it is more complete, robust and
maintainable.

Can i please ask you to go to http://www.translatewiki.net , create an
account, set your language to Punjabi (pa) and test how the typing
works? It's supposed to be really easy - just try typing and tell me
if you find any problems.

 a group of 6 members who helped reach the 1000 article mark.

 The passion and enthusiasm of the Gujarati community members for their
 language is very motivating, especially to all Indic Wikipedians who strive
 for the same cause. This story will also interest those communities
 interested in starting a Wikisource of their own.  Most importantly, it
 shows the power of individual community members and how community
 collaboration is so magical and constructive!

[Wikimediaindia-l] Translate the ProofreadPage to make Wikisource usable in your language

Hi,

Recently there was some talk here about Wikisource in Indic languages
and this email is part of that trend.

Possibly the most important extension for Wikisource is ProofreadPage,
which helps transcribing PDF and DjVu files. It is installed in
Wikisource projects in all languages, but to be actually usable, it
must be translated.

It only has 56 messages. They are all short and easy to translate, but
some of them also have technical significance, so complete translation
is important.

 special characters which either don't have key mappings on Narayam / other
 standard input methods or those which people don't use frequently and hence

It's OK to have all the characters there and not just the very special
characters, as long as the regular characters are not getting in the
way the special characters too much. It's supposed to be useful for
people who know what they want to type, but don't know how to type it.

For example, if you are comfortable typing Tamil using Narayam or a
keyboard layout that your operating system provides, and you want to
use this toolbar to type some rare Tamil characters that are not found
in your usual layout, and it's inconvenient because it has too many
characters and the character that you need is hard to find, then this
is a bug that should be filed under the WikiEditor extension. (The
example is of course imaginary, because Tamil is not supported at
all.)

 I see Telugu, Bengali already have their char set, and Marathi filed a
 bug[2],

Marathi is already supposed to be supported in the Devanagari section.
If the Devanagari section is not good enough for Marathi, then it is a
bug.

The bug to which you are pointing is proposing to use this toolbar in
a very different way. That will be addressed in a different extension
that is being designed now.

 but the list of languages / order isn't configurable per project,
 which means if Marathi gets added tomorrow, they have to scroll down the
 list and is unlikely to be very usable at least in Marathi projects since
 few people may scroll down and use it to input.

It's useful to have all the languages in all the projects, although
some customization may be convenient. For example, putting the scripts
that are most useful for a certain project at the top. If anybody has
ideas for that, then that's exactly the kind of thing that i want to
hear.

 Other than being a first class citizen and being up within the editor, what
 difference does this have against Mediawiki:Edittools ?

Edittools is too customizable - it doesn't offer anything out of the
box. So every project that uses, has something different. Some
projects copy the configuration from friendly projects (Ukrainian from
Russian, for example). It's actually a very interesting process to
learn, because it may tell a thing or two about the needs of every
language. And of course, don't underestimate the first class citizen
part :)

[Wikimediaindia-l] Special Characters toolbar - is it useful in your language?

Hi Wikimedians in India,

Recently i've been making improvements to the enhanced editing
toolbar, and especially to its Special Characters functionality.

The enhanced editing toolbar should be enabled for most of you, but in
case it isn't, go to My Preferences - Editing and check Enable
enhanced editing toolbar and Enable dialogs for inserting links,
tables and more under Usability features.

Can you please take a look at the toolbar and tell me whether it has
the features needed for your language? It would be really useful if
you could check these things:
* When you are using the toolbar in the English Wikipedia, is the
Special characters section useful for adding characters in your
language, for example if you want to add an Indian name? Does it have
all the required characters, including letters, vowels and punctuation
marks? Do the fonts work? Are the characters added correctly to the
editing field?
* When you are using the toolbar in the Wikipedia in your language,
does it provide all the needed functionality as well as in the English
Wikipedia?

If you experience any problems, please tell me and indicate the
versions of the browser and the operating system.

Thanks to Shiju for this email. Using Wikisource for digitizing books
is a very fun experience. I do it quite a lot. It is fun even without
OCR, although OCR makes things easier, of course.

It is useful to a lot of people, too. It's a shame that Wikisource is
so frequently overlooked :)

A technical comment: As far as i know, the technical differences
between PDF and DjVu are not very impotant. If you already have a PDF
of a book that you want to digitize on Wikisource, you don't have to
convert it to DjVu, because Wikisource works with both.

 Just a thought:

 For those who do not know, there is an addon called Lupin's Anti-Vandal Tool
 [LAV] on the English Wikipedia.
 This tool is a typical RC patrol tool which shows edits on the fly.
 Part of this tool checks spellings on the fly and the user has the option of
 fixing them.

 Perhaps this part of LAV could be ported?

Of course, although it may be challenging. Theoretically it can work
with any language, but in practice it's especially easy in English,
because English has very easy morphology and words change very little
by inflection, tense, number, gender etc. It's hard for many European
languages, too, and it will be hard for languages of India, but it's
definitely possible.

 I agree, English and other Latin/Roman based languages are easier to
 implement as compared to Indic ones [as pointed out by Arjuna].
 However, it would be great if we did have it in our languages.
 Nothing is Impossible after all.

It's not so much a matter of an alphabet, as of grammar complexity.
Western European languages like Italian and French and Eastern
European languages like Hungarian and Polish are written in the Latin
alphabet, but they have very complicated grammar, so writing a
spelling engine for them is much more challenging than doing it for
English. Languages of India should be quite close to it in terms of
complexity, despite the different writing systems.

And above all, it's a matter of resources - French is quite complex,
but there are much more resources (read: money) for it than for
Telugu. But that's exactly why i propose everybody to at least try to
use the existing tools: simply using the tools will help to uncover
mistakes and missing words and fix them.

I'm really glad that we have a real spelling tool developer on this list :)

Arjuna, this is very good! I wonder why doesn't it appear in the full
list of spelling dictionaries. I filed a bug:

 Spell checkers for indic languages have  only limited success, due to the
 complex nature of Indic languages. Advanced algorithms developed in
 Universities are yet to  reach the common users.

If the software is free, it can be distributed through Mozilla,
OpenOffice and Google services like GMail and Google Docs.

In the particular case of Mozilla, the spelling dictionary can be
included in the version of Firefox that people download, but only if
it's licensed as GPL, LGPL and MPL. This requirement is strange to me,
but Mozilla are very firm about it. Since you are the author of this
particular dictionary, you can decide to license it this way, and then
it will be installed to all users by default.

The other way to distribute it is just to advertise it any way you can
- blogs, comments, Facebook, anything. Spelling checkers should be
advertised more :)

This is very important and it is definitely in our plan.

Narayam as it is is more suited for desktop and laptop environments.
It is more likely that we shall push the development and distribution
of proper on-screen keyboard for mobile devices.

The majority of Wikipedias in languages of India now have a main page
for mobile devices. Great job!

 I won't say it was very fruitful, or that I showed them any live demo or
 ppt. Rather I focused on a few crucial question which were on their minds:

If you DIDN'T show them a ppt, the chance that it WAS fruitful is a
lot HIGHER :)

If you spoke about so much things to these people, then most likely it
was fruitful, because they will now at least understand Wikipedia
better as readers, and maybe they will even try to edit. For a casual
chat in a train, this is very good.

If a lot of Indian take a lot of long train rides, then consider
preparing something more structured and taking people's emails for
follow-up. Just don't get too pushy with strangers :)

Yes, a Wikisource is indeed very important for every language. Many
languages of India have rich literature that can be uploaded,
proofread and disseminated using Wikisource, reigniting the interest
in it.

The Malayalam Wikisource is a very successful project, cooperating
with teachers and students to transcribe and proofread books and
making literature learning fun again. Its first batch of completed
texts was also published on CD. Any language of India can do that.

In fact, you can start writing content for a new Wikisource project
immediately in http://wikisource.org (note that there's no language
code). This is the site for beginning Wikisource projects; once they
have enough content, they get their own domain, as is happening now to
Gujarati.

I think that it's a pretty good idea. It just need the right design. I
see no problem at all with showing the image like in Google+ with the
license fine-print under it.

You are not wrong. It does use it.

Creating a mobile main page for Wikipedia takes about a minute. All
you need is administrator rights and a tiny bit of HTML knowledge.

The way it currently works is not perfect, but you really should do this.

It's not so much a matter of WebFonts, as of script conversion.
MediaWiki already supports this for for several languages, most
notably Chinese and Serbian.

We at the WMF L10n team can probably add support for Konkani, too, but
we'll need a specification of requirements from an expert on that
language.

If you can't make this app work at all, please email us and we'll try to help.

If you are able to set your language in this app, but the phone shows
you squares instead of real letters, go to the shop where you bought
the phone and ask how you can get it to support your alphabet. You may
be surprised at the result. Even if they won't be able to help you,
please email this list and tell us about your experience, for example,
what was their explanation for not supporting your languages. Being
familiar with how things actually work in India's mobile phone market
will help us improve the support for your languages on phones.

To create a real mobile homepage, an admin of the Bengali Wikipedia
only needs to add a couple of CSS rules to the Main page of the

 I'm not a fan of fly-by-night translation contributions even if it is
 from a natural speaker of the language. There are various nuances and

 reviews at the end of the day. The initial mail was merely a feedback.
 I'm certain that those who have the privileges to work on the project
 will figure out what to do.

In translatewiki.net you need very little technical privileges. You
just open an account, request translator right, and that's it.

It's true that translations have to be refined often - both because
the original messages (usually in English) are updated, and because
translators sometimes make mistakes. Such refinement is going on in
translatewiki.net all the time.

We *always* need more people in *all* languages to help translating.
To have complete support for a language in Wikimedia projects,
thousands of messages need to be translated, and the number is growing
every day.

Oh, cool. If i understand correctly, this means that your phone has a
font, but with broken chillus, which is still better than nothing, but
to actually make it work and show some Malayalam interface you have to
use that app.

1. There should be more articles like this in non-English newspapers.
I found a few in the http://wiki.wikimedia.in/In_the_news page, but
there should be much more.

2. Here's one thing that can make the Kannada Wikipedia popular: It
should have more content that would be useful for children preparing
their homework in Kannada-medium schools. That is true for any other
language, too. I know a few teachers in Israel who are not really
Wikipedians - they don't participate in talk page discussions, they
don't consider themselves part of the community, they don't come to
meetups and they don't necessarily have accounts, but they improve
articles in Hebrew about the subject that they teach at the time. The
growth of Wikipedia is not important to them per se; they simply know
that the students will search for homework online whether they like it
or not and will probably find Wikipedia, so they want to make sure
that the students will receive the right information.

 contributing. It's not that people don't want to use Kannada on the Net.
 Traffic on the Net is very high; there is Kannada on Facebook and Twitter
 too,” he said.

 Another challenge is writing and adding quality content. “The community
 has to grow if Kannada Wikipedia is to grow,” he said. The quality of
 content also matters. One person adding thousands of ‘stubs' on, say,
 Kannada films, does not help the reader, and in fact, drives them away from
 the site. Also, Kannada Wikipedia needs “starter” articles, to get people
 reading before they can start adding content, he said.

 In order to grow, Kannada Wikipedia requires an active, organic community,
 which is not imposed through a catalyst of paid content creators. Once,
 Google started a tool that had machine-translated content improved by manual
 translations. Yet the Kannada content was “looking like spam. They (manual
 translators) didn't understand markup, templates; (it was) all malformed”,
 he said.

 An observation about contributors is that people in metros prefer writing
 to the English Wikipedia though they know Kannada and are tech-savvy.
 “Bangalore has less than 10 people writing to Kannada Wikipedia,” he said.

 Omshivaprakash, Chair for Kannada Special Interest Group for Wikipedia,
 said people are not aware that Kannada Wikipedia now has simple tools to add
 content. He said “Wiki academies” would be set up to train people on adding
 Kannada content. “Everyone complains that the quality of Kannada Wikipedia
 is low, but they do not know that they can edit it themselves,” he said.

 We have conducted over 13 outreach sessions in the past one month and have

  It's amazing that we're doing so many outreach events all over the country
 to create awareness about Wikipedia, motivate attendees to learn about

 The single biggest challenge is that we don't know the actual outcome of
 these efforts in most cases, and the results are weak when we have the data.
 I think most of us agree that outreach can be made to work better. (For
 example, 2 outreach sessions conducted recently by the Assamese community
 had about 80 participants, and 8 active editors emerged - which is a hit
 rate of 10% - which is FANTASTIC!) For most other sessions, the results have
 been closer to 1-2% or even lower - which is depressing. What makes outreach
 work? How can outreach work better? Is there anything you need from me?

 Over the past 3 months, I have been working on building a handbook for
 Outreach (Please see:

 where you can get presentation material and tips. Please do go through it
 and help me build it.

 My post consists of 5 (deliberately) provocative statements on the day of
 and the days after an outreach session. These are framed with the objective
 of generating debate and suggestions.

 THE DAY OF

 Hypthesis 1: Don't Shoot the Puppy: Outreach is not being done effectively
 and we aren't adequately introspecting on what we can do better; instead
 choosing to lose faith in attendees

 Should we discontinue general introduction sessions completely and just
 convert everything into Wiki workshops? Every second of volunteer time is
 precious and we need to make sure that every second is made to count. The
 good sessions appear to be those where people are actually shown how to edit
 - rather than just doing a song-and-dance about Wikipedia.
 The best sessions are those where people have actual hands-on editing
 opportunity. Shall we limit the intro session on Wikipedia to just 15
 minutes and then spend 45 minute on basic editing, 30 minutes on hand-on
 editing and leave 30 minutes for QA?
 Not everyone is a natural presenter and might need help on basic outreach
 skills. Is there value and interest in a capacity building roadshow where we
 help existing editors who want to improve their outreach and presentation
 skills? Is it useful to pair up a good presenter with a not-so-confident
 presenter when we are doing outreach?

 THE DAY AFTER

 Hypothesis #2: Staying in Touch: We assume the job is complete after the
 outreach session when in fact the journey has only just begun

 Can we gather (basic) information about attendees (e.g., names, usernames 
 email IDs?) so that we can stay in touch with them after sessions?
 Can we get feedback on sessions (duration, level of detail, quality of
 presenters, etc.?) so that we can all improve? Do we need some sort of CRM
 solution for this or will something like Google Docs suffice?
 How do we get more folks to actually provide their contact details and
 feedback? Which of the following will get higher response rates: asking for
 these just before the end, immediately after the end or the day after a
 session?

 Hypothesis #3: Nudge-Nudge: Newbies struggle with the most basic things -
 including which article to select

 Should we send links to useful wiki pages and tutorial videos where they can
 read up more about how Wikipedia works and how to edit Wikipedia? Can we
 leave handouts on basic editing after all sessions? Can we send them links
 to the actual presentations made at the session.
 Can we suggest / elicit potential articles that individual newbies will work
 on after the workshop? Can we give them individual pointers on what they can
 do with each article by reviewing them there-and-then during the session?
 Can we schedule a follow-up session (even if virtually using google+
 hangout) to clarify any doubts about Wikipedia editing or otherwise - maybe
 2 weeks after a session?

 Hypothesis #4: Loneliness - Newbies feel alone and the only time they sense
 the community is when their edits get reverted

 Should we not encourage them to join project pages (such as the WP:INDIA)
 and/or the India mailing list and/or their city/language mailing list to get

Adding information based on published reliable sources is probably the
best kind of contribution to Wikipedia.

Since this is so common, there are not special guidelines for writing
based on a book. The most important point is the legal consideration:
If the book is copyrighted in a way that doesn't allow free reuse, and
most books are like this, then you cannot copy from it word by word,
but you can write the same information in your own words.

I found quite a lot of articles about Hindu temples in the English
Wikipedia, but obviously there are many more that you could write. And
you could also write articles about temples in your native language
(Tamil?)

by adding references to external sources to confirm the information
that is already written in the article. For example, the article
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marudamalai is reasonable long and has
beautiful photos, but there are no references or footnotes, so the
reader has no way to verify that the information is correct. After you
add the references, you can remove the template at the top that says
This article does not cite any references or sources.

And the corresponding article in Tamil ( http://tawp.in/r/6b7 ) is
very short, so you could expand it.

That's true for the whole world. A particular problem for India is
that many people to whom i spoke, all of whom knew English, don't know
that
a. There's a Wikipedia in their language.
b. It is possible to read and write their language on the computer
*they already own*.

By creating technologies like Narayam and WebFonts the i18n team is
making Wikimedia projects more technically accessible to speakers of
these languages, but work is still needed to be done in raising
awareness. One of the ways to do it is to convince Indians who know
English to make the choice to contribute more to projects in languages
of India for the sake of the people who don't know English. I call
this the software localization paradox: The situation today is that
in a technological project like ours people who know English are best
suited for building the groundwork for people who don't, but too
often, people who know English just contribute to English projects.

frequent misunderstanding, though - the first article i created in the

I didn't get the feeling that Vickram is saying that it's your fault.

It's not possible and not desirable to force everybody to switch to a
different browser. It is possible, however, to educate people about
having a choice. That's what FOSS activism is about and that's how i
understand Vickram's suggestion. Why is FOSS activism relevant in this
discussion, you ask? Not just because the Wikimedia movement is very
strongly related to FOSS, but because in this case FOSS technologies
provide a tangible benefit - the ability to use Indic fonts. And FOSS
relies on word-of-mouth promotion and activism rather than on
marketing professionals.

Moving from IE to Firefox is much easier than moving between operating
systems or compilers. Millions of people wouldn't imagine moving from
Windows to Linux, but can easily move to Firefox.

Both Firefox and IE can be installed side-by-side and the presence of
a different browser doesn't require any more maintenance. And if the
people don't like Firefox despite its better font support, they can
always move back to IE with zero effort.

(In general, everything i say about Firefox applies to Google
Chrome/Chromium, too - it's open source, modern and
standards-compliant. However, for the particular issue of fonts
Firefox is better - from my experience Chrome has more bugs in this
field.)

 Most students here are from a Rural background and won't be able to

 consider installing a version of Firefox with menus translated to the

 you can't find it your language, see https://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n .)

[Wikimediaindia-l] Webfonts on Mobile

 Curious: Is anybody testing this for mobile web?

I am doing my best to test it in any mobile phone and tablet upon
which i come up, but we cannot systematically cover all the possible
devices and mobile OS versions. That's where the community comes in -
please test it in any device you can find and report bugs!

The WebFonts extension is deployed for all supported languages in
translatewiki.net and is updated several times a day with the newest
changes. Please feel free to create WebFonts testing pages there.

The short summary of my tests is that:
* WebFonts are just ignored in older versions of Android, in the
various Mobile Windows versions, in Symbian (Nokia) and in Blackberry.
* WebFonts may work on the newest Android versions, but i did very
little testing on that, and it changes between browsers.
* WebFonts are loaded on Apple devices like iPhone and iPad, but not
always rendered correctly.
* WebFonts work well in devices that run a real GNU/Linux OS, such as
Nokia N900. Very sadly, such devices are expensive and rare.
(rantIt's just criminal how Nokia markets them so weakly./rant)
* biased-opinionMy impression is that mobile Firefox (a.k.a Fennec),
in general, has better support for i18n, like web fonts, fonts in
general and right-to-left languages, but please test for yourself and
don't take my word for it./biased-opinion (Disclaimer: I'm a
volunteer Mozilla Rep.)

 I have started trying to read ml.wiki on my cell pointing my phone
 browser at ml.m.wikipedia.org and all I get are boxes right now.  I'm
 using Opera Mini browser on a Nokia E63.

WebFonts are not currently deployed on Malayalam and Tamil Wikimedia
projects. These are probably the same squares you would see a week
ago.

WebFonts are deployed on translatewiki.net and on test.wikipedia.org,
so again - please test them there as much as possible. You can also
try testing in other languages of India.

 in notifying the institution concerned as well as the possibility of a local
 FOSS-based firm offering upgrade services.

It is a very valid point. Installing Firefox or at least updating to
IE8 on Windows XP costs nothing and has very tangible and
easy-to-demonstrate benefits for language support. Wiki Community
members should BE BOLD and tell libraries, schools and colleges that
they should do it.

While you are at it, make sure that auto-updates are enabled and
consider installing a version of Firefox with menus translated to the
local language (see http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html ; if
you can't find it your language, see https://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n .)
