 Hi Arun,

In fact I am sorry. Sorry for taking the real bunter so seriously and
personally, sorry for having a go at you.

Guys here kept on convincing me that it was a joke, but I was blinded so
much in my false anger. I really apologise for that. I have inly seen all
serious discussions and allegations recently and from the very first day of
joining this list, that I could simply not think that someone mught even
 joke here.

No problem, I totally understood why I could have been misunderstood. I
myself am scared to post on the India lists because it feels like I'm about
to enter combat with unknown assailants who strike wherever you are not
looking. These lists are meant to be for discussions on topics of our
interest and building online relationships with fellow contributors. If we
cant make it fun then what's the point of contributing?

Regarding the bug, I feel at sometime a decision should be taken to stop
active support for old browsers. We are still spending valuable development
time and effort on fixing issues such as these when we could be
concentrating on building stuff for the future. I can understand if there
are people using ie7 out of their own will, but from previous cases, it
does seem like a good chunk of users are in offices because of outdated IT
policy. The IT policy has to eventually see reason and change, so why cant
it be now? It will just make the world a better place :)

IE7 and even IE6 still have quite a lot of users I think (IE6 being the
default browser shipped with WinXP, which is used widely). AFAIK, Microsoft
stops support for WinXP in 2014, and so we could go on for 2 more years I
guess.

No its not so serious as you make it out to be. I don't mean to
discriminate on basis of age, but User:Abhijay claims to be a 16 year old

uncommon on enwiki, and there have been many times when users have returned

 Hello everyone,

I am so pleased to announce that Wikimedia Bangladesh, with the help of
Independent University, Bangladesh, Chittagong, and Bangladesh Open Source
Network, organized the first Bangla Wikipedia Unconference 2012 [1] in
Chittagong [2] to promote Bangla Wikipedia [3] in Bangladesh. This
 outreach
event was held in 2 and 3 of March and was attended by around 300
participants. It was first big-level program of Wikimedia Bangladesh and
 it
was outside of the Dhaka (the capital) to focus on country-wide outreach.
We called it an unconference to give it a less formal look and to make
 the appearance more welcoming.

This two days event was inaugurated by the Chittagong City Mayor and and
 in
the last it was attended by the Since and Technology minister of
 Bangladesh
Government. It was also attended by some other popular public figures,
writers, and university professors, and media personalties. During the
unconference we had events like workshops, photo exhibition, cultural
program, seminars, article writing contest, etc. We had several teams from
the schools, colleges, and universities in Chittagong as team
 participants.
The unconference was hosted by Chittagong campus of Independent
 University,
Bangladesh. You can see the some of the images of the events in the
 Commons
 category [4].

Because of the presence of the popular public figures and government
officials, the event got a significant amount of media coverage in
 national
print and electronic media. We also even had billboards in the city's main
crossings to let people know about Bangla Wikipedia which was the main
purpose of this event and current strategic priority of Wikimedia
 Bangladesh.

Wikimedia Bangladesh wants to thank everyone who supported us. We want to
thank our sponsors and donors who helped us to arrange this big event. We
want thank Wikimedia Foundation director Sue Gardner for her nice video
speech that we screened in the inaugural ceremony. And of course to our
participants, who eventually made this effort a success. And I apologize
 to
let you guys know about this event in late. We are still working on
 putting
 everything on wiki.

 community*

 http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/gurgaon/Sanskrit-makes-a-comeback-thanks-to-Wikipedia-community/articleshow/12012312.cms

*Acclaimed author and linguist Umberto Eco once compared languages to
biological creatures. A language, he said, follows an organic lifespan - it
is born, it grows old, and it passes away. If the analogy holds, then
Sanskrit, one of the most ancient of tongues which originated in India,
seems to be living the last of its grizzled and decrepit years.

There has been talk of declaring it a dead language, and some believe that
it is only a matter of time before this language too goes the way of
ancient Greek and Latin. But this is likely only if the labour and constant
endeavours of the Sanskrit community - a body comprising scholars and
students of the language present in Gurgaon and other parts of the country
 - fail to bear fruit.

Dr Shreyansh Dwivedi is part of the department of Sanskrit in SCERT,
Gurgaon. According to him, contrary to popular notions, Sanskrit is most
alive today than it has ever been. The trouble is that most people do not
realize how much is happening in this field, he said.

Attempts have been made to help the language evolve to modern standards.
Haryana Sanskrit Academy is about to a launch a Sanskrit grammar software
for the students of the language. A full-fledged Sanskrit Wikipedia is
online, where scholars like Dwivedi and his colleagues are regular
contributors. And in Gurgaon, preparations for a new seminar and workshop
for the young are under way.

There is no other language, which is being supported so thoroughly and
comprehensively, not just in Gurgaon, but in other parts of the country
too, said Dwivedi. He added that even those who are teaching Sanskrit in
schools and colleges have little idea about how vibrant this sphere is with
 activity.

According to officials of the Haryana Sanskrit Academy, young students are
more than willing to go for language degrees in Sanskrit. Earlier this
month the Delhi Sanskrit Academy held a one-day workshop, where hundreds of
young people turned up. It's only a matter of making the language
accessible, and Sanskrit will find many takers within no time, said an
 official of the academy. *

do wonders for projects like Wiktionary, consolidating
 different language versions.

I have proposed a new project on Meta based on it -

If anyone is in contact with Shrey, please link him to that page, in case

It seems like a great tool that can even be a new general Wikimedia

Popups primarily display text, and any image in the target page is shown
even smaller in size. I'm guessing that's not what Nischay's looking for;
but there may be a gadget for that somewhere that someone wrote! If you

+1 to that. OGV, for all its openness, is a big pain to work on,
especially for converting.

Another thing, if we are to upload these videos to Commons,
*obviously* we will have to convert them to open formats. So, no one
is denying that. It is rather obvious and understood.

So now that we have cleared confusions, can the SIGs and guys
organizing meetups please raise hands? Will you guys be able to do
 such recording?

*raises hand* I am willing to create such a video; I appreciate Subha's
mail about what exactly to say, but it shouldn't be a boring, mechanical
interview-style answering of questions. If it is to motivate others, it
should be catchy (read ad-like).

That sounds good Konarak, and apart from the loss of quality most handy

  http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Wikimania2011

I highly recommend everyone to apply and attend Wikimania !

Like every year, The Wikimedia Foundation is offering a limited number
 of
scholarships to offset the cost of select individuals' attendance at
  Wikimania.

Both full and partial scholarships are available for Wikimania 2012:
Full scholarships will award round trip travel, dorms
 accommodations and
  registration.
Partial scholarships will subsidize up to 300€ of travel expenses.

Scholarship recipients have to bear themselves the additional costs of
taxis, visa travel agent charges etc.

  More Information : http://wikimania2012.wikimedia.org/wiki/Scholarships
  Apply here : https://secure.wikidc.org/wm/schols/
  Deadline : 16 Feb 2012

Around 30 % of the scholarship are allocated to Asia Pacific, so
 there are
more chances of scholarship applications from India to be selected. :)

Please note that the selection is mostly based on the merit of the
  applications.
One of the common mistakes that Wikimedians in India make is that we
 aren't
enough vocal of what we do. So please do write in detail about your
  Wikimedia activities.

Please feel free to forward this to various language and city mailing
 lists
and encourage other Wikimedians to apply.

  All the best wishes!

  Regards
  Tinu Cherian

and Community Advocacy Department Promotion of Philippe Beaudette
 To: wikimediaannounc...@lists.wikimedia.org

Today, we are excited to announce the start of our building of a new
department called the “Legal and Community Advocacy Department.” This new
alignment recognizes that we can combine the best of legal and community
advocacy to foster new ways to advance the interests of the community
consistent with the goals and strategies of the Foundation. For details,
 please go to http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Legal/LCA_Announcement.

As part of this reorganization, I’m pleased to announce that Philippe
Beaudette has been promoted to Director of Community Advocacy. We will
start engaging our community shortly and enter into a consultation period
with it to brainstorm how to build the department. We anticipate that it
will take us about 6-12 months to get the right team and drive the new
 department at full speed.

The community is invited to join us on Friday for office hours to
discuss the new Legal and Community Advocacy Department. Details for the
IRC chat can be found at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC_office_hours

Forward this to the list and the Chapter, we need a plan ASAP.

I spoke to Saagar today.
Here are the main issues:
Plan: We need a plan of action, and we need it fast.
I was asked if this was a contest or a workshop, to which I stated that it
was a Workshop.

Here are the key points we discussed:

1 Date/Day/Schedule: The event is spread over four days, and is jam
packed. We need to schedule it properly, and get a follow up mechanism in
place.
2 ISO certification: Pragyaan is the fourth Technical fest in India to get
ISO certification. Because of this, the organisers, have to sign an MoU
with the organiser/promoter of each individual event. I believe the chapter
needs to do something about this. The main purpose of this is to show that
the event is taking place and to promote it.
3 Swags: I was suggested that we have a small trivia session thru the
session and give out same Laptop stickers/tees/etc.
4 Accommodation: This is really tight. We need to inform the number of
participants beforehand to make sure that we can get accommodation.

I know Bala won't be able to make it. What about other Community members -
Chennai, Coimbatore, Salem, Bangalore, Kerala?

Do remember, this is NIT Trichy. A BIG event. I believe Tinu and Logic had
done something at NITT earlier. Hoping that they would do it this time as
well.

Hoping for a response soon.

2012-01-19 Thread Swaroop Rao
On Thu, Jan 19, 2012 at 16:00, Nitika ntan...@wikimedia.org wrote:

I'll be more than happy to formulate a plan/proposal for this.

Pragyaan 12: http://www.pragyan.org/12/home/ is running through
23rd-26th Feb that means we have enough time to organise this well. Going
through the website I feel that they'll have different events running
simultaneously on all 4 days and don't not have provisions for stalls. But
please correct me if Im wrong.

They did have stalls last time I think, but don't know about this time,
gotta check with Srikanth.

 Here is what I propose:

 1. Organise at least 8 Wiki sessions during these 4 days. We can keep the
morning sessions in English and every evening we can conduct in Tamil.
Doing 2 sessions every day will mean that the participants can pick and
choose the date and time according to their own convenience. This might
lead to more people attending the session.

IMO, we don't need to do it for all the 4 days. 2 days with high
participation might be better than 4 days with moderate participation.
Again, this is my opinion.

 2. We should organise Editathons everyday where participants who have
already attended wiki sessions during the day can join in. It's important
for newbies to experience and practice editing before they fall in love
with Wikipedia and Editathons can provide them such a platform. :)

That's great! We can throw one morning for a Commons event probably? Just a
thought.

 3. I personally really like the idea of Trivia sessions. It keeps the
 participants enthusiastic and interested.
 4. How about using this tech fest as a platform to get interested people
 kick off a Wikipedia Club?
 5. How about inviting the participants to join in the Tamil Wiki Media
 Contest?

In fact the Tamil Wikimedia contest will be ending on the 28th if I'm not
wrong. Its a great platform to publicize it.

Participating in an event as big as this one will definitely need more
volunteers. Could I please request more people from Chennai, Coimbatore,
Bangalore, Kerala to raise hands if they'd like to volunteer on ground for
 this event.

 More ideas/suggestions are welcome.

 Thanks
 Nitika

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] What's in it for me?

2011-12-16 Thread Swaroop Rao
I've faced this many times, and I think most of us who do outreach work
have faced this. I've had people asking me first thing: What's the pay
like?. Its quite difficult to convince people who approach it with that
mindset. I've not always succeeded, but what I usually do is tell them the
example of English Wikipedia and its enormous reach; I go on saying Hey,
doesn't your son use Wikipedia for his assignment? Did you know its written
by people like you and me? You can write too, and your knowledge will reach
millions across the world.

Sometimes, I encourage people to write about their Hometown, or upload
pictures of it. Geography is one of the easier things to work on.

 Here's the text:

 From Wikipedia author Karthik Nadar

On the day a terrorist attack ripped through the heart of my city,
 Wikipedia changed my life.

The 2011 bombings in Mumbai made international headlines, but at the
moment the crisis struck, there was no straightforward information
 about what had happened.

I knew I couldn’t be the only one looking for answers. So I went out
to take photos, uploaded a map I pasted together, and made sure the
Wikipedia article on the incident would help people make sense of the
 chaos.

Since then, I’ve made thousands of edits to Wikipedia articles. My
experience that day on Wikipedia made my passion for photojournalism
clear, and I’ve followed that path ever since.

I felt so grateful for Wikipedia, and when I learned how it stays
online, I donated 250 rupees to do my part. Will you make a donation
to keep this valuable resource available around the world?

Wikipedia enables us to share the world. With 470 million different
visitors every month, it’s revolutionized the way we consume and
spread information -- sometimes even down to the moment it happens.

And it does it all for free -- with zero ads, under 1,000 servers and
 fewer than 100 staff.

That’s amazing. Just look at Google or Facebook. They have hundreds of
thousands of servers and tens of thousands of staff.

It’s no wonder Wikipedia is the 5th most popular and most visited site
online. And it’s also no wonder why they need support every year from
 people like me and you.

Will you pitch in $5, $20, $50 or whatever you think Wikipedia is worth
 to you?

 Thanks,

 Karthik Nadar

I am aware that we have too many lists, but it is expected as the

Hisham, i was an online mentor for seven students in the PPP in the
previous sem. I have done this before. I am normally a patient newbie
helper. I help tens of newbies every day in Ta and en wiki. But if you make
it an obligation for me to check through the edits of forty odd guys, who
turn in assignments and are only angling for marks in their courses, you
are turning me off. You heard what another OA surya had to say about this .

You are looking at OAs as full time employees - they have a job to do,
why not do it. Remember this is a volunteer project and we volunteers have
only X amount of time to donate to wikipedia, OAs have other interests in
Wikipedia - being a OA isnt supposed to take up all my wikitime. I
certainly did not sign up for following every edit of a COEP student who
shows no sign of actually wanting to voluntarily contribute to Wikipedia or
any sign of learning. My onwiki time is better spent elsewhere.

This is the biggest difference between my PPP experience and IEP
experience. In the former i had 7 mentees, who asked me for help, when they
ran into trouble, listened to what i had to say, were basically competent,
produced workable quality content. I was happy to improve their content as
the workload was manageable. In the IEP, i had 40, who never asked me
anything (instead i am expected to go through their edits). But could be
seen arguing with people who tag their content for copyright violation,
adding the same copyvio content after being reverted multiple times.
Getting their CAs to plead with admins if they get blocked.

So for the next phase do not design a OA as someone who will track every
edit of a student and correct all his mistakes - Such a thing might be
possible with one on one mentoring, but even then it routinely fails in the
regular adopt a editor arrangements that happen in en wiki. But with five
or seven students (forget about forty) it is impossible for me to log in
daily, check if they have edited, check out the diffs, cross check for
copyvio and then give him/her a feedback.

+1. with Srikanth This is the SINGLE MOST important thing to remember
for the future. Lets cut the political correctness and putting the blame
everywhere else than where it belongs - the students and faculty involved

My view is not driven by political correctness but I do want to avoid
generalising all students and all faculty. Just take a look a the user
talk and article discussion pages and it's immediately apparent that quite
a few students and teachers wouldn't deserve blame. Many students did make
mistakes - but they made the same mistakes that many newbies.

So here is what is to be done:

 1) *Keep the number low* -

Agree and we need to work on how we select the colleges and faculty and
 classes and students.

 2) *Penalise those who copy paste*

This is something that can (and should) be led by the faculty. Some
teachers have shown the way on how this can be done.

 3) *The CA to student ratio has to be 5 to 1. *

Clearly the student:CA ratio needs to be reduced significantly. ...but
 did you mean students:CA 5:1 or 1:5?

Anything more seems to non-workable. Online Ambassadors/mentors are not
handholders and error correctors. I signed up to be an online ambassador.
But stopped reading the IEP mails that were sent to me after i realised,
that the IEP program essentially wanted to me to do the students' work.

In my four years of college, i copy pasted almost every single assignment
given to me. I did not know it was wrong and wouldnt have cared if someone
from outside pointed it to me. The attitude i saw from the IEP students is
exactly the same. Unless the students are penalised for plagiarism by being
failed in the course, they are not going to change the behaviour. And how
many of your professors in indian education were concerned that you were
copy pasting your assignment. (None of mine cared - i can say with
confidence that is the same case in 99% of the cases in India now)

So no amount of increasing the number of campus ambassadors, their
training, etc would help unless there is a stick involved - How many times
did the campus ambassadors tried to tell students not to copy paste?. How
many of the students heeded the warning. This issue was raised in Late
August. There were two whole months to hammer in the message and it didnt
work out. Why? there were no serious implications for the students
involved. There is a conversation in Srikanth's en wiki talk page, where a
student tries to weasel out of copyvio by giving every excuse in the book -
he did not correct his behaviour, but instead tried everything to get the
 copyvio he added approved.

Those who got blocked weaseled, whined and pleaded for an unblock but in
many of the cases reverted to the previous behaviour, when they thought
they could get away with it. They are socking and trying to remove cleanup
comments from the IEP page . Without a no-nonsense approach, you will
only gets repeats of such behaviour.

So here is what is to be done:

 1) *Keep the number low* - The next round should have less than 50
students. No classwide / collegewide blanket programs. Make this a
interested students only program. We have clearly demonstrated there is
no manpower to handle anything more. We have about exhausted the goodwill
of the en wiki community. If this repeats, you are looking at a wholesale
blocks for the students and IP addresses.

That's true. The enwiki community is losing its patience really.

 2) *Penalise those who copy paste* - either they should be failed by
their professors. If the professors dont care, drop the program and stop
going back to that institution. Wikipedia is a work in progress, we dont
need plagiarism by Indian students to shore it up. We are not that
 desperate.

A bit harder to enforce, since academic plagiarism is practised en masse by
many professors themselves (not generalizing, just saying that the problem
goes way deeper than the students).

 3) *The CA to student ratio has to be 5 to 1. *Anything more seems to
non-workable. Online Ambassadors/mentors are not handholders and error
correctors. I signed up to be an online ambassador. But stopped reading the
IEP mails that were sent to me after i realised, that the IEP program
essentially wanted to me to do the students' work.

Go back to the drawing board. Dont start with 1000. not even a 100, start
 with a 50.

Also, it seems that CoEP has most of the problems; I think that CoEP being
an engineering college, is more rigid in its working than other
science/commerce/liberal arts colleges. What we could do is branch out into
other streams (other than engineering I mean); Law for example: Why not
have law students editing about Intellectual Property Rights (I know the
irony we'll have in case we have copyvios out of that). And the course
structuring in other colleges are a bit different, so they could
accommodate programs like the Wikimedia education programs much easier.

Infact Sanskrit was one of the early communities to adopt Narayam (before
Tamil). Please see the below screenshots for Tamil, you similarly have
Input Method dropdown at top of page near Username / Login link. Please
hover over it, you would get a dropdown to choose the transliteration
option. (Control-M) is the keyboard shortcut to turn it off / on.

 Gerard / Santhosh / Junaid / Shiju,

Should we run site notices with these screenshots on these communities to
increase awareness. Tamil wiki projects have a link to typing help on
sitenotice and that page contains relevant help. I think it would be better
if you ask bug filers to make sure they run sitenotices on wiki post
 enabling Narayam to spread awareness.

 Applications are invited for
travel/boarding scholarships for WikiConference India 2011. There are a very
limited number of such scholarships, and it is also possible to apply for
partial assistance, in case you can handle part of the costs on your own -
doing so will ensure that more Wikipedians will be able to get
assistance. Provisions have been made for participants from special interest
groups. Applications will be welcomed until Aug 15, and the decision process
will be completed by the first week of September 2011. Please study the form

We look forward to plenty of active participation at the conference, with

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] India map and indian laws

2011-02-14 Thread Swaroop Rao
I think that such a measure would only complicate matters, and would present
the wrong information to the Indian user.

 Hi,

A simpler technical solution will be to show the map that is correct
in the India context for all the IP addresses originating from India
and for all other IPs, the current one ( I think that is the one
 recognised by UN)

This should give a right solution to all the users.
Additionally, on all the pages where India map is presented, entries
for both the maps should be given mentioning the context and the
 disputes.

I can probably make it on saturday or sunday. Just let me know the exact
place and time, and I will confirm. I can, of course, speak kannada, and I
don't know what you mean by programming language..if it is html, then I can
manage that.

In order to move forward, may I suggest the following:

Job description of volunteer: other prerequisites - please list
 1. Speak Kannada Yes (mandatory)/No (not required)
 2. Programming knowledge Yes (mandatory)/No (not required)
 3.
 4.

Let us not make both mandatory as we'd like to see as many volunteers
participating as possible. However, if anyone who's good with speaking in
Kannada can take the lead, it'd be useful.

I can step in if no one else does. Ideally, it would be nice to see some
 new volunteers taking the lead.

Copying this email to the Kannada Wikipedia Mailing list as well.

 1. List of names/email of volunteers who will be present at the Kannada
 Wikipedia booth on
 a. 4 Fri
 b. 5 Sat
 c. 6 Sun

 Has the booth been confirmed?

 2. Location map of venue/hall/room - exact details to prevent frantic
 searching for the right place.

 3. Bus from Shivajinagar/Majestic/...

 4. Coordinator name mobile 9.

 5. Please bring (your own) snack/lunch, booth will be working without a
break! Cannot afford to lose a single visitor.

 6. Script: What should/should not be said. It may be impossible to meet
before the event for the orientation but a virtual classroom will address
 that need.

It would be good to meet sometime to discuss all this. I can be of help.

Ralph, would you be able to send me your phone number off the list?

 Ralph,

This is indeed a great opportunity to create greater awareness about the
Kannada wikipedia. We need a lot more contributors to Kannada wikipedia.
Exhibitions are hectic but p;pose the best outreach opportunity.

I though of sharing some learnings from the recent exhibit stall we had at
the World Sanskrit Book fair for you and the other volunteers to consider:

- These exhibitions tend to draw lot of crowds and can be very
exhausting.
- There needs to be 4 volunteers at a given time in the stall.
- Volunteers need to be in shifts of 2 hours to be effective and retain
energy reserves.
- Most of the questions in event like these are general awareness, what
they can do as readers, how they need to do if they need to contribute
 (whom
to contact). Discussions will not be very technical. (except in the cases
 of
very few visitors)
- Having pamphlets is a a great help with the links to wikimedia.in,
kannada wikipedia and other projects, India meetup page. We struggled
writing the links through the 2 days as we did not have any pamphlets.
- We now have the banners from the W10 event in Bangalore. These will
be of great use.
- Take the wikireader, it generates a lot of interest. It is now with
HPN.
- Suggest 3-4 laptops with a data card each. This is better than using
a single projector. We did not use a projector. One to one discussions are
most effective.
- Take a a few notebooks to write down contacts of people who want help
to become contributors.
- You will also run into people who would want to give away content
they have created to wikipedia. This is as always a great opportunity.
- From our past experience, the volunteers knowing wikipedia (even
using is good). Key messages to communicate can be shared with the team.
 The
general public is not very well informed on specifics of wikipedia except
being aware. Many may not know about it in Indian languages.
- The volunteers need the ability to communicate and relate to the
varied audience and backgrounds. This is the most important skill than even
being insightful.
- Have at least one senior wikipedian in the stall to answer the
difficult or detailed questions.
- Overlap some volunteers across days to carry the learning and
experience of earlier days across subsequent days.
- Expect people to ask questions about Kanaja and other similar
projects. They may also have stalls.

 Best wishes for the event.

 regards
 Arun
