[Wikimediaindia-l] Farewell

2023-06-28 Thread Chitraparna Sinha
*(Apologies for cross-posting)*

Dear community members,

Change is the only constant.

I wanted to take a moment to depart from my usual communications to you, to
share that 30 June 2023 will be my last day at the Wikimedia Foundation.
The Movement Strategy & Governance (MSG) team stands dissolved.

The past two years have been a whirlwind journey & I continue to be amazed
by the persistence, resilience, dedication, and kindness of our collective
South Asian community. I have had the privilege of meeting and knowing many
of you during WikiConference India 2023 and through online meetups.

Although my official role ends here, know that I will continue to remain
your ally and advocate for community development. Let’s keep pushing
boundaries, breaking barriers, and making a difference together.

Best regards,

Chitraparna Sinha

 Dear Wikimedians and friends,

As some of you might already know that I have left from my position of
Community Advocate at the Centre for Internet and Society. My last working
month with CIS was June 2019. I am taking a breaking from professional work
to focus on my higher studies. I joined CIS-A2K when I was on my first year
of the college and now I have recently graduated as a Mechanical engineer
 :D

My journey with the CIS-A2K in the last 3 and half years were great, I
had opportunity to work closely with Odia and Santali community, and also
had opportunities to collaborate with many Indic Wikimedians on different
projects. I also got to meet many of you during various national and
 international conferences.

I would like to thank everyone in the movement for all their support
and love they have given to me, especially to my team at the CIS-A2K and
the Odia Wikimedia community. I worked under both Tanveer and Tito, they
were always supportive and have had encouraged me to work on different
projects and collaborations, from working with media houses, educational
institutions, Government of Odisha, UNESCO and others.

I will be still within the Wikimedia movement wearing different hats.
This is my personal email address, feel free to reach out to me anytime
over here or on social media channels.

 Dhanyabaad! :)

His 40 years of experience and wisdom served the movement well when we

2014-11-24 Thread Ravishankar Ayyakkannu
Hi,

Please join me in wishing a fond farewell for Sowmyan as he is getting
relieved from his role as an Executive Manager for Wikimedia India
.

His 40 years of experience and wisdom served the movement well when we were
going through a crucial phase. Those who were closely involved with the
chapter operations know that he went many miles beyond the call of his
duty.

Sowmyan has promised to serve the movement as a community member and I
greatly look forward to it.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Farewell

2014-09-02 Thread Srikanth Ramakrishnan
Dear EC, Members of the Chapter,
I am not pleased with the way things are working out right now. The EC
passed a resolution to appoint a senior Indic language Wikipedian as the
Program Director on the recommendation of a four member committee
consisting of Jayanta, Sudhanwa, Moksh, and Naveen for a probation period
of three months, starting on the 1st of September 2014. Subsequently, the
newly reorganised EC has done every bit to prevent the appointment of said
person. It is with extreme displeasure that I have to state that this kind
of nepotism at the hands of vested interests prevents me from working well.
Due to this, I am resigning as an member of the Executive Committee with
immediate effect.

Hello all,
I think it is important to analyse issues objectively rather than
subjectively if we want to go forward and learn from our experiences.
We bring with us into our professional lives our personal strengths
and weaknesses as we are human. Criticism is good. Constructive
criticism of both others and ourselves is important if we want to
improve the movement. Let us move on as better human beings.
Thanks Hisham for your contribution.

*#1.*

There is always a way to look at happenings positively. Even falls and
failures, if at all they do happen, are valuable lessons!

To me, that is the greatest lesson and principle I have learnt from editing
Wikipedia itself. Wikipedia constantly compelled me to realize my own
mistakes (edits) and correct. Every instance of them was a positive
milestone.

*#2.*

On lamenting about stillborn help, just as a matter of fact and point of
order:

In our small community, we are very much aware of the possible help (*and
our standard rights and privileges to that*) from chapter or IP/foundation.

But so far,
when we need help, we do not yearn for that from higher ups.

Instead, we seek help from 'bottom downs'.

Instead of San Francisco, Delhi or Bangalore, we try, get and accomplish
assistance from little kids and humble rural people.
And that we get immensely.
(And vice versa, our community members have helped the chapter

We have been able to digitize and upsource entire volumes of ancient texts
to our Wikisources and elsewhere through pleasant collaboration from
primary school kids from hitherto unknown villages.

Our most successful outreach programs were conducted by infrastructural and
program assistance from barely internet-powered commons.

Perhaps, the only time we have sought help or assistance from chapter / IP
/ WMF was when we conducted our massive outreach program
(Wikisangamotsavam) a few months back. And we are very content and thankful
for whatever they provided. We even did not distinguish who among them were
providing.

My humble opinion: Grow your community bottom up. Grow self-reliant as far
as possible. Your rights will always be reserved and accumulated for more
needy and pressing occasions.

Hi all,

Whatever has been done through the IP, both the community and WMF are
equally responsible. It is not good to attribute failure or sucess to
anyone.

When some one is leaving any movement, it is basic courtesy to wish him
well. By doing so, he or she will have good memories of the movement and

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Farewell

2012-07-31 Thread Gautam John
Srikanth, a question: Does your email mean to suggest that while the
IP/Hisham has been unresponsive the Chapter has always been
responsive? The logical corollary is that IP/Hisham has been
responsive at times when the Chapter or individuals have not been able
to help and I would think this to be true.

In general, what do we learn from your email? That everyone must be
helpful to everyone else all the time? I think what's important is
that you did get the support you were looking for from someone within
the community and that will hold true irrespective of who helped and
when, right?

Thank you.

Best,

Gautam

Abdul, whoever you are, hats off too you. While I agree that you were

Hisham, something I never got despite multiple requests, for my

support I needed. But maybe That's my luck or karma, I don't know, and
I don't want to know. Hisham, as much as I like or dislike you, you're

So you'll miss him because you have someone to blame? If that's the
prism through which you view activity, then you biases are clear. For
we all have clean hands and can cast the first stone.

Maybe it's time we looked inwards too rather than finding an easy
 outside mark to blame?

I am sure there are more who hold dissenting views and this is a good
time to air them. We can all learn from them.

2012-07-31 Thread Béria Lima
Calm Ashwin.

Everyone has the right to say what they think about something (after all we
"still" live in a democracy). I do understand that he was rude and that
there is more than one way to express frustration and he didn't choose a
good one, but we shouldn't do the same to him or anyone. And more
important, we shouldn't be "inviting people to leave" the list or
community.

I'm not saying you wrong (and I do agree with the most of what you said)
but let's not push people away.

constructive member of the community even if you dont edit. We have such

Abdul, honesty is a rare character and it's good to strike a
dissenting note. However, all said and done, a dissenting note based
in fiction is a wasted thing because it lacks a factual basis in which
to assess it.

Ah. The wonders of second hand information. Always notable.

> None of you seem to be thinking, or else no thinker is replying.

Perhaps. But your email doesn't seem to indicate that you were either.

> Hisham is not some war hero that you have to praise him like this.
> If there is anything he has done, it is not praiseworthy.

Clearly the members who have replied on this list think otherwise.
Myself included.

So you'll miss him because you have someone to blame? If that's the
prism through which you view activity, then you biases are clear. For
we all have clean hands and can cast the first stone.

> Hisham has done nothing for the community that stands out. all that he has

Sure. Which is why volunteers have thanked him.

But had the grace and courage to own up to his failures. We could all
learn something from that.

Maybe it's time we looked inwards too rather than finding an easy
outside mark to blame?

I am sure there are more who hold dissenting views and this is a good
time to air them. We can all learn from them.

Before i start, I am not a Wikipedia editor. Just someone who knows several
of them.

None of you seem to be thinking, or else no thinker is replying.

Hisham is not some war hero that you have to praise him like this.
If there is anything he has done, it is not praiseworthy.

yes, we weill miss him. a lot. who else do we blame for failurs and all the
nonsense in the community?

Hisham has done nothing for the community that stands out. all that he has
done is what volunters do.

if any volunteer asked for help and he responded, that voulneter would do
exzctly what hisham tells him to.
if he doesnt, hisham cribs that they don't let him do his work.
if he does, he claims credt for that volunteers success and puts the blame
on the volunteer if it fails.

he runined th english wikipedia with his IEP crap.
the community is still trying to recover.
on top of that he called up several voluntrs over the phone for iep this yr
and justified his actions.

congrats hisham, you've done a lot in one and a hafl years. a lot of damage.

Wer'e not happy that you are leaving, but sad, because we won't have anyone
to blame.

Have a good time.

I really don't know what to say, you never expect this kind of mail in the
inbox while simply doing a routine check at 8am.. Hisham has been very
supportive from each & every aspect...Be it the education program/outreach
sessions/innovative ideas to promote Wikipedia. Many disagreed with his
viewpoint, but that never hampered the personal relationship they had with
Hisham.

Personally, I am not going to miss Hisham, no, as I will still be in touch
with him & I am sure he will keep on editing in Wikipedia with the same
passion...:) But yes, we will miss him on a professional level.

I think Viswaprabha expressed everything we all intend to say..
Here's wishing you all the best for your future endeavor!!! :) :)

Take care,

I am very surprised by this announcement. I wasn't expecting anything like
this.

What might seem surprising to learn is, I used to talk to Hisham since the
beginning and we never really stopped talking in the last year. We would
meet every month or so, for coffee or lunch. We disagreed about a lot of
things, but absolutely none of it ever affected the personal relationship
we had. I suppose we were capable of separating that. I certainly didn't
make his job any easier, but I was always direct with my opinions. I hope
he forgoes any transgressions.

He would invite me to meet-ups, occasionally ask for help with something,
and I helped when I could, sometimes even through our most strongest
disagreements. I could disagree with him, criticize him in the strongest
tone, and yet, we can still sit down for lunch and laugh. I could ask him
for life advice, talk about our families, and none of it had to be about
Wikimedia.

This was an unfortunate situation, and I never really had a direct problem
with Hisham. It was the larger decisions and the position he was placed in.
I would hold others responsible before him, as I have an inkling that even
this was someone else's decision.

I'm going to miss talking to him.

Kind Regards
Theo

P.S. Remember me and smile, for it's better to forget than to remember me
and cry.

You will be missed, Hisham, and it's really good to know that you are
around for the next few months.

Take care,
Achal

Dear Bangalore Community

I'm writing to inform you that I plan to leave my current role
supporting Wikimedia in India. I am going to be exploring
opportunities and evaluating options that are closer to my career
aspirations and my personal circumstances. I will be working through
to ensure that there is a smooth transition - and this is likely to
take 2-3 months. I am writing now because I felt it appropriate and
opportune to inform you as early as possible.

I want to start off by thanking the Wikimedia community and movement
for giving me this extraordinary opportunity. Working on something
like India Program has been something that has been professionally
enriching and personally fulfilling. Over the past 1 1/2 years, I have
been supported by so many of you - and I want to thank you for
everything you have done! The passion and intellectual firepower of
our community has been my constant source of drive and guidance.
There are so many examples of powerful stories from all over the
country: the incredible efforts put in by the IEP Campus Ambassadors
in Pune; the army of volunteers that drove the outreach push across
the country in the first few months of this year; the beautiful
stories of fantastic community initiatives from far and wide across
the country and sub-continent, and indeed the world; the remarkable
stories from so many communities - large, small and tiny ones!

I want to thank the team that I have had the pleasure and privilege of
working with - Nitika, Noopur, Shiju & Subha. You guys have been
wonderful. The work that we are doing is experimental and we have
been innovating every day, and I know the circumstances have not
always been easy. Take strength and inspiration from the large number
of community members who have been touched by you and appreciate your
efforts and value your work.

I will send an actual "over and out" message later. In the meantime,
I will continue to work on everything that needs working on.
