[WISPA] need service in LA

2005-09-06 Thread Matt Liotta
Anyone have the ability to provide service in Thibodaux, LA and/or
Denham Springs, LA?

This is for a major company contributing a lot of money and people to
hurricane relief right now, but they don't have any service at those
locations.

RE: [WISPA] need service in LA

2005-09-06 Thread JohnnyO
Rick - fortunately almost every single shelter here has support with $$
from FEMA and ARC. Mac has a different situation up there unfortunately.
Keep funneling things to Mac - they need the support more then we do
down here at this point. I am sure by weeks end Mac will have almost
everything up there wrapped up on the wireless side - he's got an entire
calvary headed his way! !

I wouldn't mind getting a 41ft Morgan so I could go setup the shelter on
the other side of the lake :)

Seriously though - Thanks for the offer. I could use a couple of ATA
devices - our office phones aren't working very well, Im willing to pay
for whoever sends them in Need them overnight.

[WISPA] MotoWi4

2005-09-06 Thread Dylan Oliver
Hi,

I read Motorola's recent announcement of the MotoWi4 platform for
802.16e with interest. I found it even MORE interesting that they've
backdated this announcement - which came out the other day - to July
25. If intentional, this move would seem to supercede their previous
announcement to build 802.16d updates for the Canopy Advantage
platform. That's alright and all, but it does seem a little tricky to
rewrite history ("Motorola recently announced a major joint technology
development
agreement with Sprint for wireless broadband WiMAX 802.16e technology
testing and equipment trials." - no, they announced trials for
802.16*d*).
Mostly, I'd just like to know where they're going, and if the Canopy
Advantage will really be all that - or if it will fall flat on its face
as the "redheaded stepchild of Motorola", as someone suggested at
WiNOG, in deference to MotoWi4.

Anybody got a clue?-- Dylan OliverPrimaverity, LLC

Re: [WISPA] MotoWi4

2005-09-06 Thread Matt Liotta
As I understand it, the advantage platform was supposed to be software
upgradeable to 802.16d. However, since that time Motorola has decided
that 802.16d is a waste of time and is focusing on building pre802.16e
products. I don't think advantage will be upgradeable to 802.16e, but I
haven't heard one way or the other.

2005-09-06 Thread George

I can't make any promises at this moment.
It's busy as heck here doing installs and building out. I'm one of the
two man crew.
But we've been discussing how to go down and help. Only thing we can
think of is in a couple weeks or so we can free me up to go down south
and help out with installations.

I'm sure in 3 weeks or even 3 months there will still be help needed.
It would be great if we could just drop what we're doing, but we have to
take care of business.

I'm sure other wisps are in the same boat.

As for equipment, what is needed? 802.11b cpe's and rootennas?
I might have some to send.

I can also send some voip adapters if there is an asterisk system and
someone to program them. I have some Linksys 4 port router with 2 voip
ports.

RE: [WISPA] Call for 802.11 Bridges, Routers, VoIP and more.

2005-09-06 Thread Rick Harnish
Please keep a count and inventory of all items that you send. If you want
to list it on the Part-15 website for documentation that if fine. Please
send me a list as well. WISPA has people in the field now and they need
equipment NOW! The bureaucracy that Part-15 is having to put up with is
unbearable for most of us to deal with. It is no fault of Michael's as he
is doing his best, but we are going to become doers instead of sitting back.
I know a lot of refugees will appreciate our efforts.

It is definitely important to document what and where you send the radios.

I am starting a spreadsheet now. Michael has asked me to submit all of the
gear that WISPA can donate. He doesn't feel that we are helping much. So
lets show just what we can do. In my opinion, WISPA members have been out
there doing things already. Just ask Mac and JohnnyO. There is a job to do
and people who want to do it. Lets make the job as simple as possible.

Little information has been released so far about Intel and Cisco equipment
being shipped out and if so, to whom. Matt Larsen is heading down to Mac's
on Wednesday, Tim Wolfe is heading out in the morning to Biloxi and there
are at least 20 others leaving soon as well. It would be a shame if they
don't have much gear to deploy. If nothing else, they can help get things
organized and start developing a field plan, visiting shelters and so forth.

I think he is trying to follow guidelines and can't make a move otherwise.

But that doesn't stop anyone who wants to head down and jump in where
they can and then when Part-15 gets the nod to do what it is they want
Part-15 to do, they can help Part-15.

Seems there are people on the relief list who want to work now.

Also I'm wondering if wispa can't be of help by setting up a fund to
help Mac and the other small wisps who are setting up communications at
shelters to actually hire some of the displaced residents and actually
pay them money while they work, so they can get housing and back to work
and on their own feet again.

Is this too far out there.

Makes the best business sense to get a recovery going, hire the displaced.

RE: [WISPA] Update on Joe Miller in Mississippi

2005-09-06 Thread JohnnyO
Here is an update :

Joe Miller runs the WISP in Gulfport / Biloxi / Pascagoula and
surrounding areas - We run a network "that" went from Mobile, Alabama to
Dauphin Island alabama with a tower site located at WLO on the coast.

Leroy Clark from Mobile is going to inspect our tower site and see if
it's even standing. If not - we will do a wireless shot of 34 miles to
Pascagoula from Mobile, Alabama.

Who is in route to help Joe Miller ? Could we stage here and head that
way on Thursday ? That would give us 2 days to get all gear shipped in
and ready to roll.

I have secured a 10mbps link from Mobile to do this shot with. This will
get his Pascagoula network back up and online and Joe Miller has already
stated he will donate his network and resources to lighting up the
shelters along the coast.

[WISPA] FCC makes comments about Hurricane Katrina Restoration Efforts

2005-09-06 Thread Rick Harnish

JOINT STATEMENT OF CHAIRMAN KEVIN
J. MARTIN, COMMISSIONER KATHLEEN Q. ABERNATHY, COMMISSIONER MICHAEL J. COPPS,
AND COMMISSIONER JONATHAN S. ADELSTEIN ON HURRICANE KATRINA RESTORATION EFFORTS

In
addition to its other tragic consequences - including tremendous loss of life
and widespread property damage - Hurricane Katrina severely shook the communications network
in the Gulf Coast and
restoring all these links will be as challenging a communication mission as we
have ever confronted.  Dedicated
employees from wireline, wireless, broadcast, cable, and satellite companies
are working around the clock to restore communications services to millions of
customers.  We commend the rapid response
we have witnessed from all segments of the communications industry.  We know that the industry, like those of us
at the Commission, is sparing no effort in restoring service to the Gulf Coast.

The Commission has been in continual contact with the industry and
has taken prompt action, where necessary, to provide regulatory relief to
facilitate restoration efforts.  For
example, the Commission has created opportunities for providers to deploy
alternative means of communication in the affected region.  We have also assisted in
performing coordination activities between the industry and federal emergency
authorities as appropriate.  We will continue doing everything within
our power to ensure the vitality of the
nation's communications
network.  We are confident that all
service providers will do the same.

Our deepest thanks go out to the thousands of communications
company employees who, at great sacrifice, have been working nonstop for the
past week to repair the communications infrastructure that is relied upon by
the entire nation.  And, above all, our
thoughts and prayers are with the countless victims of this tragedy and their
families.

Respectfully,

[WISPA] Free Space Optics Equipment available

I have received a call from a manufacturer of Free Space

anyone has a need for this equipment please give me a call.  The number of links is undetermined at this
time.  It is my understanding that the
military is using some of this gear in NOLA now.

Rick,
If these are going to be used for Mikrotik, you may want to look
into the 500 series routerboard. These are a little cheaper (if you
consider the cost of the board, power supply, license, CF and all
the other goodies. I am not sure the supply is any better on these,
but may be worth a look.

2005-09-06 Thread Marlon K. Schafer (509) 982-2181
I have some Cisco routers that I can LOAN to this effort (they are my
backups and I'll need them back). I may be able to spare a pc without
display too.

Let me know if this'll help.

We are getting a lot of requests from down south for more equipment. Mac
Dearman, JohnnyO, Tim Wolfe, Joe Miller and Joe Laura are all working
diligently to get more shelters online as quickly as possible. If anyone
has any equipment they can donate ASAP. Please get with me. There are
nearly 20 volunteers heading down there from all over the country in the
next few days. Some are in route now. We need backhaul equipment, AP's and
client radios. Routers and VoIP equipment is also needed. Feel free to
call my cell.

This call for equipment includes resellers and manufacturers. Please call
me today!

able to do speed tests.I have no clue how to do any of

I have a Fujitsu 3500 Tablet PC.   Shortly after I bought it,
the OS crashed (due to some "help" from my kids) and I did a reinstall of
the WIN2K on it.   however, I can't get the pen to work and other
stuff.

Fujitsu has a special install of WIN2K specifically for t hier
tablets.

Does anyone have this CD?  if so, I need the image of the
CD.   I have the license and the key code, but not the CD.

Thanks

RE: [WISPA] need WISPA to step up

2005-09-06 Thread Rick Smith

I retract my previous statement, due to several things on the P15 side of the
fence that appear to be ugly.

I don't believe P15 is doing this without self promotion in mind.

This is an effort that needs to be thankless, and in THAT fact, it will come
out that stepped up to the plate, and because of
their efforts, a whole lot of people were more comfortable.

Imagine, after the city's cleaned up, and we got to collectively KEEP the
antenna locations we borrowed to put the network in place, there'd be
interviews on tv, etc that asked WISPA officials for their comments on the
overall process, and the tag line could be simply "Call WISPA today to find out
how they can get a local WISP to help you!"

That said, I'm helping Mac and Johnny in their efforts, directly, for the same
reason I never give money to the salvation army or the red cross. I want to
know where my money / donations are going and what they're being used for.

I think a whole lot of people here ought to think real hard about this
new-found relationship with P15 that wouldn't exist without tragedy as the
underlying cement.

I'm wondering if WISPA has missed the boat for the relief effort.

Shouldn't wispa stand behind and work with Part-15 on this one? This isn't a
race to look best, but an effort to put WISPs on the map as reliable and
trustworthy!

I am not sure where you will be getting uplink service to get out to the world
from New Orleans but here is a link to someone who may be able to help with
that.
