Excellent! Thank you for rambling so much, Peter. I am the marketing
director of a new WISP and I'm new to the industry. I do know that the one
thing we have to do is be unique over all. I love your ideas.

Thank you!

believes that crap anyway?)

You have to earn your customers' loyalty every day.
You have to give them VALUE to defeat lower price.

On the MDU's do you have a website for the tenants with blogs,
classifieds, photo album, video sharing, and announcements?

Do you have HOWTO's on tech gadgets like Linksys boxes, VoIP, iPods,
digital cameras?

Sorry for rambling so much.

John:

I do not know if you watch the list on Tower-Pro or not, but this rescue
was up in Indiana, and it was required by a company called Advanced
Computers Communications Systems. I am learning over the past few
days that this is a WISP.

Because of your stature with WISPA and the WISP community, I would
appreciate it if you would forward this e-mail on to others in the WISP
industry. Tower climbing and rescue training is a must if they are
going to work in this business. People need to climbing pairs and have
the knowledge, skill, and equipment to get climbers down quickly and
safely in times of emergency.

It took three fire departments to get this man down in over 10 hours. I
am thankful they got him down alive. There are so many in the WISP
business that monkey up towers without any thought of safety, I have
heard stories and seen it first hand. The tower industry is criticizing
this rescue, because it was required of a WISP and in their eyes WISPs
are unlearned and untrained companies.

Thank you for your support in building a safer industry.

Best regards,

Jeff

Greetings Tower-Pro!

First question - WHY couldn't employer rescue employee?

If there are going to be those in the industry that can not prepare
themselves for incidents like this, then I see a need.

Most fire departments are not trained to perform rescues of this sort.
I am very thankful that the firefighters from three departments got Mr.
Burnette down safely. There are those of us in the industry that spend
hours upon hours of training (and daily reminders to BE SAFE), and which
follow the ComTrain rescue practices for situations just like this. We
are scattered throughout this great Country.

My Question: How can we develop and provide a nationwide registry of
qualified and certified Tower Companies who are trained in these types
of rescues to local fire and public safety departments?

I commend the fire departments for doing their duty, what do you think
the rescue time would have been if the employer had been trained? As we
all know in some rescues, minutes matter. Had this been a more serious
injury (i.e.- cut), do think Mr. Burnette would have made it down okay
in the 10.5 hours he had to wait?

Let's continue to build a safer industry. I encourage you all to take
the time to learn how to climb safe and especially to know how to get a
man or woman off a tower in an emergency.

What is the value of life?

Best regards,

Jeff

This by the AP taken from local Fox28News Website regarding a tower
climber in Frankfort, IN. No other info available at this time.

Crews rescue man stuck on cell phone tower

Rescue crews helped a worker down from a cell phone tower this
morning in Frankfort, where he had been for more than 17 hours.

Rescuer say the man, identified as Jeff Burnette, became exhausted
while working about 280 feet above the ground on the tower yesterday.

He first went up the tower about ten yesterday morning and called
his employer for help around seven last night to say he couldn't get
down. He was wearing a safety harness.

Crews from the Frankfort, Lafayette and Indianapolis fire
departments assisted in getting the man down about 5:30 this morning.

Frankfort Fire Chief Greg Miller said Burnette was conscious and
alert as he was taken to a local hospital to be checked out.

Re: [WISPA] Cablevision to cancle residential phone service in Conneticut

2006-10-20 Thread Peter R.
It probably means the take rate was small and they don't want to be
bothered with it.
Optimum Voice for Residential is probably about as profitable for them
at $29.95 as Vonage.
If SunRocket didn't just get an infusion of cash, I wonder if they would
still be around.
There are true costs involved with delivering voice, including beefing
up the network to support it.

The acquisition cost is high: hardware, install, and tech support.

Cablevision's focus right now is beating Verizon in NYC and Long Island
with their Lightpath fiber.
Connecticut is old SNET and new att territory. CT has just 1 operating
CLEC. Tough market.

If I was a Residential WISP, would I do Resi VoIP? Depends on the ILEC
and opportunity.

Would I sell Voice-Optimized Platinum service? You betcha!

Peter

I watched it too. Very nicely done. I'm
not sure that I like the fact that there were no telcos there.

I've got mixed emotions about this one. On
the one hand, I don't like government over regulation. It's true that
there isn't a problem today. It's also true that the telcos aren't to be
trusted.

I think I lean more to letting the market take care
of it's self till we KNOW of a problem or an impending one.

Someone else really needs to take the lead on this
though. I fail to see any concrete reasons to be all worked up about
anything other than the idea that all should be able to buy anything they can
afford.

The argument that some will have faster pipes than
others rings hollow to me because the internet is already like that. The
more you pay, the faster you can go. Gee, what a concept.

John:

I do not know if you watch the list on Tower-Pro or not, but this rescue was
up in Indiana, and it was required by a company called Advanced Computers
Communications Systems. I am learning over the past few days that this is a
WISP.

Because of your stature with WISPA and the WISP community, I would
appreciate it if you would forward this e-mail on to others in the WISP
industry. Tower climbing and rescue training is a must if they are going to
work in this business. People need to climbing pairs and have the
knowledge, skill, and equipment to get climbers down quickly and safely in
times of emergency.

It took three fire departments to get this man down in over 10 hours. I am
thankful they got him down alive. There are so many in the WISP business
that monkey up towers without any thought of safety, I have heard stories
and seen it first hand. The tower industry is criticizing this rescue,
because it was required of a WISP and in their eyes WISPs are unlearned and
untrained companies.

There are those of us in the industry that spend hours
upon hours of training (and daily reminders to BE SAFE), and which follow
the ComTrain rescue practices for situations just like this. We are
scattered throughout this great Country.

My Question: How can we develop and provide a nationwide registry of
qualified and certified Tower Companies who are trained in these types of
rescues to local fire and public safety departments?

I commend the fire departments for doing their duty, what do you think the
rescue time would have been if the employer had been trained? As we all know
in some rescues, minutes matter. Had this been a more serious injury (i.e.-
cut), do think Mr. Burnette would have made it down okay in the 10.5 hours
he had to wait?

Let's continue to build a safer industry. I encourage you all to take the
time to learn how to climb safe and especially to know how to get a man or
woman off a tower in an emergency.

What is the value of life?

Best regards,

Jeff

This by the AP taken from local Fox28News Website regarding a tower climber
in Frankfort, IN. No other info available at this time.

Crews rescue man stuck on cell phone tower

Rescue crews helped a worker down from a cell phone tower this morning in
Frankfort, where he had been for more than 17 hours.

Rescuer say the man, identified as Jeff Burnette, became exhausted while
working about 280 feet above the ground on the tower yesterday.

He first went up the tower about ten yesterday morning and called his
employer for help around seven last night to say he couldn't get down. He
was wearing a safety harness.

Crews from the Frankfort, Lafayette and Indianapolis fire departments
assisted in getting the man down about 5:30 this morning.

Frankfort Fire Chief Greg Miller said Burnette was conscious and alert as he
was taken to a local hospital to be checked out.

[WISPA] Phone Answering System

2006-10-20 Thread Blair Davis
A few years ago, I saw some software that would answer the phone thru a
voice modem, take a message, convert the recorded message to an .mp3
file and then e-mail the message. I need something like that

Needs to run under W2K or Fedora.

I don't need a voice jail system. I don't need a VoIP phone system. I
don't need really anything more that an answering machine that forwards
the recorded message as an email attachment.

Any ideas?

A few years ago, I saw some software that would answer the phone thru a
voice modem, take a message, convert the recorded message to an .mp3 file
and then e-mail the message. I need something like that

Needs to run under W2K or Fedora.

I don't need a voice jail system. I don't need a VoIP phone system. I
don't need really anything more that an answering machine that forwards the
recorded message as an email attachment.

Any ideas?

I watched it too. Very nicely done. I'm not sure that I like the fact that there were no telcos there.

I've got mixed emotions about this one. On the one hand, I don't like government over regulation. It's true that there isn't a problem today. It's also true that the telcos aren't to be trusted.

I think I lean more to letting the market take care of it's self till we KNOW of a problem or an impending one.

Someone else really needs to take the lead on this though. I fail to see any concrete reasons to be all worked up about anything other than the idea that all should be able to buy anything they can afford.

The argument that some will have faster pipes than others rings hollow to me because the internet is already like that. The more you pay, the faster you can go. Gee, what a concept.

2006-10-20 Thread George Rogato

I had an answering machine program that used the modem in my pc.
I think every modem at the time came with software like that.

Winfax, bitfax, etc.

I used it for a while and it used to save each message as a sound file,
not sure mp3 or not.

I would imagine there is still lots around that are still free.

This is an issue which needs further study for sure. The sky is not
falling I do not believe. Taking action to force complete neutrality on
all net traffic is not in the best interest of a commercial ISP who has
to make some tough decisions when looking at issues like peer to peer
traffic and such. I am not interested in forcing myself to adhere to an
all bits are created equal philosophy unless there are provisions that
allow me to filter viruses, spam, limit excessive abusive traffic, etc.

John, I have been looking for the words to describe my gut instinct here,
and you came up with them with a precision far beyond anything I had been
able to think up. Thanks.

I think everyone needs to study the issue fully and then start thinking
about how best to proceed. In the meantime we need to get a feel for
what the possibility is of us all getting shafted at peering locations.
I see this as the biggest threat to what we do as an industry. If we
have to start paying prices like the old days or higher for bandwidth
then this could get ugly real fast.
 Scriv

Well, I think we should get a bunch of us into a huddle and start some
rational analysis and see if we can arrive at scenarios where there REALLY
is a risk to consumers or to business, or to us as WISP's.

Danger to consumers:
What if several larger providers... Let's say, the 3 largest providers of
cable and dsl connectivity suddenly announced a new, low priced service:
Broadband for half price, but those content providers NOT on the approved
list (read: having paid the carriers money) will have thier content rate
limited to dialup speed. Will consumers go for it? Will content
providers pay up?Are any of the largish connectivity providers part of
a media company? LEt's say Comcast bought a streaming movies for
subscription provider, a music for subscription provider, and a couple news
and entertainment providers online, and then proceeded to prioritieze thier
own sites, and also rate limiting everyone else's.

Is this possible? Wouldn't that be illegal under price fixing laws, or
other anti-conspiracy statutes? In Comcast's hypothetical, as long as
they inform the consumer of what's going on, is that really a problem?

I harken back to the days of not so long ago, when I ran a BBS, and was
actively searching for a provider to get a fractional T-1 in... This was in
the mid to late 90's. I recall a big selling point at the time was
unfiltered. Back then, many of the people who were selling connections
to the internet were schools or businesses, and were actively involved in
blocking various content, some even blocked all overseas traffic, as it
was considered nuisance. Some just blocked certain ports to ensure that
your connection was only used for what they allowed it to be used for.

I don't see that anymore, instead I see a glut of commodity bandwidht
sellers who have the all bits are equal philosophy when it comes to
connectivity.

Danger to US: what percentage of WISP's use a provider of retail
connectivity as thier bandwidth provider? If, like the first situation
above, OUR bandwidth was limited, content prioritiezed and deprioritized by
our upstream, what would be our rights? Sad to say, I dont' think we
actually HAVE any.

I would like to see an ISP / NSP / backbone provider / other group get to
gether and discuss this, people who have an interest in what's going on and
wish to retain the ability to get what we paid for without someone else's
demands concerning priorities and who's bits are worth what.

And while we're on the subject, perhaps the REAL solution is not one of
governmetn restricting or forcing actions on the part of ISP's in regards to
how they run their networks.MAybe all that's really needed, like in the
instance at first where I named Comcast, is that ISP's simply be required to
state if they employ any means of prioritizing or deprioritizing traffic
based upon content, application, or provider to the consumer, and be
required to reveal who gets priority and who doesn't.Frankly, I think
business would boom for the small guys, if the big guys decided to try to
screw the consumers over by limiting access based upon what content provider
ponied up and bought priority.Like political campaigns... I don't
really care how much someone gives some guy running for office. Disclosure
is good enough for me.
