2010-01-18 Thread Tom DeReggi
Scottie,

Yeah, I saw that. I'm just confused on exactly what part of the 700Mhz band
they are talking about, since they mentioned Public safety.

There is the 700Mhz that Verizon won at auction. There is the 700Mhz Dblock
that got no reserve bids sitting dormant (share between public safety and
auction winner), There is TVWhitespace up to 700Mhz. Are there other 700Mhz
ranges?

What I'm trying to understand is if they are telling MICs to also vacate
whitespace or if they are saying vacate a specific 700 Mhz range and use
other TVWhitespace ranges instead?

[WISPA] To backup my last post!

2010-01-18 Thread Scottie Arnett
[FCC document]

FCC ADOPTS ORDER TO CLEAR THE 700 MHZ FREQUENCY BAND FOR PUBLIC SAFETY
AND NEXT GENERATION CONSUMER USERS

Washington, D.C. - Today the Federal Communications Commission adopted
an Order and Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking prohibiting the
further distribution and sale of devices that operate in the 700 MHz
frequency band. This action helps complete an important component of
the DTV Transition by clearing the 700 MHz band to enable the rollout
of communications services for public safety and the deployment of
next generation 4G wireless devices for consumers.

The order will primarily impact the use of wireless microphone systems
that currently operate in the 700MHz band. These unlicensed devices
cannot continue to operate in this band because they may cause harmful
interference to public safety entities and next generation consumers
devices that will be utilizing it. Thus, the Commission is making
clear that no devices utilizing these frequencies may be sold or
distributed. In order to ensure that individuals and groups currently
using unauthorized devices in this band have ample time to transition
to appropriate frequencies, the FCC is providing a sunset period until
June 12, 2010, one year from the DTV Transition.

Re: [WISPA] [Motorola II] Reboot the FCC !

2010-01-18 Thread Scottie Arnett
Gino is exactly right on this. Post any COMMENTS you guys feel relevant! I am
on a lists that have MANY telecommunications lawyers on this list and they are
even talking about it Look it up and join
that list...not a lot of it affects us, but MUCH of it does! I have been on the
list since early 2000 to see what FCC rulings help or hurt us as ISP's from the
dial-up days to NOW. This is to be the OPENNESS supposedly before the new
government and the FCC.

A small quote from one lawyer "And, honestly, there's a bunch of stuff that
happens at the agency level that doesn't really require an attorney. What they
really need to do is talk to the network guys, the engineers without the
lawyers in the room."

Another good site is OpenInternet.gov .

The FCC has pretty much told the microphone guys in the 700 Mhz to get another
frequency to allow for broadband deployment. We NEED to make sure our voice is
heard and they allow this as a spectrum WE CAN USE, and not auction it off to
the existing ILEC/Cellphone providers!

Re: [WISPA] stolen solar site

2010-01-18 Thread Steve
There are a few things you can do to keep people from feeling
comfortable stealing your stuff.
ip cameras from toshiba will record frames at intervals, plus having
motion detection with email alert. they will also alert you if a loop is
closed or opened.
always a good idea to have voltage monitoring for your batts on remote
sites. you can use packetflux sitemonitor, or bnd rmsboards. they allow
snmp monitoring and will sense open or closed circuits as well as having
analog inputs. This along with a monitoring program like zabbix which
you can configure with triggers to alert you via email, sms, or im, of
certain conditions will provide very quick knowledge that something is wrong
monitoring a NC circuit with wire looped through holes in the solar
panels will let you know if someone is messing around.
And it always helps to put up some signs indicating that there are
cameras monitoring their activities.
These are a few things I've found quite useful. I am of the opinion
that it doesn't matter how much cutting someone has to do with a
powersaw to get something they want, some people will do it as long as
nobody is watching.
Better luck next time!

Marlon,

Sorry to hear about the equipment. A Bouncing Betty or two would be
my preferred approach (I hate thieves). IR / Daylight Cameras with
remote recording and alarms are the only 'legal' solution though. I
also use big mean dogs at sites I routinely visit.

Just get you two or three crack rocks laced with arsenic and hang where they
can see them. 90% of the thieves I have seen are dope heads, and that would
solve the problem before they even touched your solar panels. Too bad you
couldn't chance critters get into this, or it just might work.

[WISPA] Tribal Entity Looking for Partners

2010-01-18 Thread Jeffrey J. Pyros
Guys:

Dae Sung Corporation is a certified participant in the United States Small
Business Administration 8(a) Business Development Program. The corporation
is a tribally-owned company with the authority to make business decisions
without going through tribal council. Dae Sung was created to stimulate
economic development, opportunities, job creation, and training and
development for tribally enrolled members as well as for other Native
Americans.

As a tribal developer, Dae Sung is currently seeking partner(s) for
broadband projects nationwide, both on and off tribal lands. Partnering
with us for funding under NTIA's Broadband Technology Opportunities Program
(BTOP), RUS's Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP),or other USDA or HUD
programs can provide significant advantages in the application process.

Please contact me directly for more information.

[WISPA] Story of Medicine Bow (Part II) now online

2010-01-18 Thread Matt Larsen - Lists
I recently started a new blog site that will be highlighting the stories
of Wireless ISPs around the US, along with equipment reviews, opinion
pieces on broadband policy and some occasional rants and raves. The
site is called Wireless Cowboys and you can find it at
http://www.wirelesscowboys.com/. For those of you that don't know me,
I run a WISP in rural Nebraska and Wyoming and the WISP Directory site
http://www.wispdirectory.com. My college degree is in journalism and
this is my attempt to reactivate my writing skills outside of the
wireless mailling lists.

I have loaded some of my previous postings, but today is the unofficial
kickoff of the site and I have a long, eight part story about the
struggles of a small town in Wyoming to get broadband service and how
they finally got it. It is an eye opener for people who are not
directly involved in the WISP industry and a reflection of the everyday
struggles that WISPs face.

Parts I and II of the story have been posted on the site.

My intention is to feature more articles about WISPs in the future. If
you have a story that you would like to share with the world, please
contact me at wirelesscowboy -at- vistabeam.com.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

The big problem down there right now communications wise, is diesel.
There is a microwave link from DR to a large NAP, and they are down to
eight hours of fuel. This would be a great place to start. There is a
thread on NANOG at the moment in regards to this, and even mentions
the "diverse group of wireless people" (Prounounced: Camp Shagnasty)
who helped out in Katrina.

In the WISP I'm partnered with in Texas, we have a very remote location
that has cameras. We had someone break into the building and steal 4 of
the 6 computers, 3 of the 4 cameras and a HUGE amount of hardline in the
fence outside. They didn't know, but the video was being stored at
another site. We got pictures of the license plate on their truck, full
facial images of 3 of the 4 people (the 4th was a woman who somehow
managed to not be in front of the camera at any time). They tripped the
alarm when they entered the building, and the county police were waiting
for them as they left the area. The video was used by the DA during the
trial. We made sure that the details of the case were highly publicized
in the area.

Re: [WISPA] stolen solar site

2010-01-18 Thread Tom Sharples
Radius Security, one of our vars, has a product that they apply to this
problem. It's a hi-res camera Mobotix attached to a 3G modem, with alarm
zones set up so that if someone approaches the solar array, it sends an
email alert together with a megapixel image of the perp to your choice of
recipient. Or it can be used with several alarm services companies that are
set up to work with these cameras, and will call the cops.
For solar apps the nice thing is that the whole package only draws 7 watts.
Of course an ISP could use its own backhaul so you wouldn't need the 3G
modem, just the cam, which draws 3 watts by itself.

2010-01-18 Thread lakeland
Drag the welder up there. Couple of pieces of 3" x 3" angle and weld the whole
mess together to the mounting pipe. Cement the pipe in the ground with 6 bags.
They won't be able to carry it.

You'll need a grinder to service it or replace the panels

Lol

Good luck dude.

Wouldn't have mattered. They'd have been and gone long before anyone could
have gotten up there to check it out.

This only services 6 homes. They'll call when it's down

I'm gonna have to come up with something different for up there.

Re: [WISPA] stolen solar site

2010-01-18 Thread Rick Kunze
I'm sold on surveillance.

IP based camera, remote recording. Unless they're prepared, masked and
stealthy, you'll have images. Although I've heard that converting an
image into something from which you can recover property can be
challenging. I hear there's an App for that.

I once had a customer call with an outage. Upon seeing no link I went
to the site and noticed no CPE either! A day or two later I got a call
from a local guy who does a lot of the PC repair/housecall business
around here. He said some kids came by with my disassembled radio and
wanted to know if he knew how they could hack the service. LMAO!

I got it back, put it back together. Done deal.

There isn't much to see in a small town but what you hear sure makes up
for it!

Use some of that nice steel rope from Lowe's. It is cheaper then chain and
takes a LOT of effort to cut. Bolt cutters (I am told) do not work.

2010-01-18 Thread lakeland
Install eyehooks in each panel and daisey chain a wire through the panels.
Connect the cable to a pair of N/C contacts on an ethernet SMS alarm panel.
They cut the cable, you grt an alarm.

Otherwise find some way to connect them together so its really time consuming
or difficult to disassemble

My experience has been if they can't take it, they usually damage it. Lil'

Re: [WISPA] Support for Comms Infrastructure Setup in Haiti

2010-01-18 Thread Jack Unger
I'd suggest a three-fold approach.

1. The Board makes a direct contribution to Nimesh's group (say, $1500).

2. The Board asks members to consider making a further direct donation
to Nimesh's group.

3. The Board asks hotspot vendors to consider donating "x" number of
hotspots to Nimesh's group.

We'll need to get info for how to donate to N's group. Maybe Marlon can
get that.

Two of mine are on islands. You'd have to have a real nice boat to get
to them. That rules out most lower tier criminals. The solar repeaters
are on the property of lobstermen on the islands too. Lobstermen have
limits of how much they will mess with each other, as extra-legal
retribution is reality and they have to get along together on the same
pieces of ocean.

Re: Support for Comms Infrastructure Setup in HaitiThanks Nimesh,

To the board, we sponsored a site to take donations for Katrina. I'd like to
suggest that we turn that back on for donations for use in any disaster and
that we kick loose any remaining funds for the Haiti event.

To the membership, WISPA has worked with New America for many years. We are
*mostly* on the same page and I know many of the people involved personally.
This is a real group of people that do real things, not just a guy or two
trying to profit from disasters.

Nimesh, if you come up with anything even more specific let us know.

  Hi Marlon,

  Thanks for the response.

Money is always good. If you come across any people willing to go to Haiti to
do the installations, please point them to me.

Here is our plan - We are planning to install 100 wireless hotspots for
various NGOs. These hotspots will be connected by WiMAX and Outdoor WiFi links
and then to satellite hubs for outside connectivity. I think we have the radio
equipment. Now I am in discussions with Satellite companies to connect to their
links. I am also looking for Solar panels, Indoor WiFi routers etc.

All this equipment will be carried by a team of 4-6 people. You may know Earl
Campbell from Uphi.net? At Tsunami time we had sponsored him, Peggy Townsend
and couple of other guys to go to Aceh. They spent 4 months there and thus have
the experience of what it is like to work in such type of hostile environment.
I just made an arrangement for this team to work side by side with the ITU's
team so we can expand the project scope.

I hope this gives you an idea about out activities and find some common areas
to help.

Hi Marlon,

I hope things are going well for you. It has been a long time since we
last communicated.

I would like to ask for your help to organize some sponsorships to support
the rapid deployment of wireless communication network in the Haiti disaster
area.

At the Tsunami disaster time in Aceh (Indonesia), we had sponsored a team
of volunteer engineers and provide them our wireless equipment to establish
early communication network. It was a very effective project (see attached
slide). And in fact that wireless network was the only means of communication
for the NGOs for many weeks. In the attached picture you see the Red Cross
"Head Quarters" and the doctors using the Internet to communicate with the
outside world.

The same team of volunteers have approached me and I have agreed to
sponsor them. We are providing them equipment and financial support. They are
preparing to go to Haiti and install the wireless communication capabilities.
In order to up-scope their efforts, we are also undertaking the coordination
efforts with our business partners (customers, suppliers, friends ...), to
contribute their resources so that collectively we are able to sponsor more
equipment and more volunteers to help rebuild the Haiti's communication
infrastructure. We already have few WiMAX and WiFi equipment manufacturers
supporting this effort. We are in discussions with the manufacturers of
Towers, Antennas, VoIP equipment, computers, Satellite service providers etc
to make this as complete as possible.

I believe we have sufficient equipment for the first batch. Now some money
is coming in so that we can buy the raw materials (already subsidized by
contributions from vendors). This raw material is being converted into
wireless products (manufacturing cost is further absorbed by the partners) and
then we will send over to Haiti. So all in all, we are able to make the
contributions go a long way in supporting the end goal.

I hope you are able to use your contacts in the industry and get some
contributions for this important cause. We can use help in all aspects -
Equipment, Money, Volunteers to help install ..., just use your imagination.

With warm regards,

Nimesh D. PARIKH

They have serial interfaces instead of network interfaces and
support a type of MODBUS communication, which can be interfaced
to SNMP by various means. One way would be with the ultra-

Thanks Scott.

If we can't get this one fixed, I'll be placing an order soon.

Anyone using wind turbines in high-wind areas? We had a Southwest

Re: [WISPA] Solar suggestion for ultra low use site?

2010-01-18 Thread Christopher Erickson
They have serial interfaces instead of network interfaces and
support a type of MODBUS communication, which can be interfaced
to SNMP by various means. One way would be with the ultra-
low power Parallax PINK module, which can give a web and telnet
interface as well as SNMP.

Those turbine can operate open loop so the controller just disconnects the
battery from the turbine when the battery is fully charged.
It doesn't hurt the turbine to operate with no load.

I think most people fabricate their own pole mounts using angle iron and
hose clamps. You can find some pole mount designs at power-fab.com

Wow those Tycon panels look right up our alley - what exactly seems to be
the preferred mounting bracket/hardware for these?

Do these charges have any builtin monitoring via SNMP?

Latitude and average cloud cover will be factors.

I would use MorningStar MPPT solar charge controllers. Get every
last watt of solar charging you can manage. Each controller can
handle one to three 75 to 200 watt panels. If you end up needing
more than three panels, add controllers and panels until
sufficient charging is obtained.

Avoid as many power conversions as possible. Power conversions
never have 100% efficiency and many of your precious watts end up
wasted as heat.

6V golf cart batteries are the best bang for the battery buck and
can be deep cycled much better than 12V automotive-style batteries
because they have much thicker plates.

Dusty and/or snowy areas can be a problem. If so, schedule
regular PMI visits to inspect and clean the panels.

Use security screws on the solar panel mounting brackets. Solar
panels are starting to become a popular theft item.
