I'd not do that with anything that you don't want to shift. The pole will
shrink and swell. Eventually the clamps will move.

the customer calls, we take their order and we "assume" we can get a signal.
The installer goes on location under the impression he will install when he
arrives. He does a signal check, and once we have a good signal he installs. If
he can't get a signal, we call it a NOGO and he goes to his next scheduled
install.

We stopped doing signal checks and site surveys about 7 years ago. It was the
best decision we ever made. :)

Along a different line... What is everyone's percentage on NOGO's
(that's what we call people we try to install and can't get a good

a few days ago... Out of 1,500+ completed installs during the last 12
months, we had 208 people we couldn't install successfully. If we only
had more time to find more tower locations... :(

disqualified that customer, yet we got them installed.
Plus, how do you know if you want to make their location your next

Great post Tom!
As I mentioned earlier, we used to give $20. A study by my marketing

Re: [WISPA] Looking for webcam/security software

2008-10-14 Thread Tracy Tippett
The incredible variety of IP cameras available on the market makes it tough to
compare apples to apples. There are low cost low res solutions, high cost low
res, low frame rate, high frame rate, big dollars and little dollars indoor and
outdoor, optimized for wireless, converted cctv, you could even probably find a
diet - decaffinated version if you search long enough.

The important step to take in choosing video equipment is to understand what
your customer's expectations are first and then to closely match the system
capabilities to those expectations with budget following along as needed. With
Hollywood showing everyday customers the incredible capabilities in movies like
Eagle Eye and Enemy of the State, don't be surprised if your customer wants
some pretty unreal capabilities.

Most times when a customer learns what all the bells and whistles will cost it
gets them started thinking about what they really need vs what they want and
this allows the budget back into reasonable territory. Best of luck in your
search.

Additionally as you are comparing camera types and models WATCH OUT for the
equipment that does not include the software to run it. This can be a
tremendous expense.

We stumbled into them looking for a tower monitoring solution. Had a remote

downtime (ended up being our competitor).

Put them head to head with most analog cameras and I think most people would

Yes. Many of the default 5.x filters do not have enough db filtering.

We got some 5.3Ghz cavity filters designed/made for us by DCI that worked
really great, about 35-30 db rejection. They were about $300ish.
I bet they could make you a model that extended the full 5.x band.

[WISPA] Tranzeo/Mtik disconnect issue

2008-10-14 Thread Steve Barnes
2nd Send

How is the MT/Tranzeo Beta Firmware working? I have issues when the
disconnect happens the AP shows horrible signals from the Tranzeo's
(-105 to -113) but if you start a ping to that radio it drops back to
-69. Is this resolved as well? If I reboot the AP all the signals are
fine. I am still on the old FW.

Since Damian has made this public, I guess I can talk about this
testing

I have been using their beta software for over 2 weeks now and I have
uptimes that long as well.

I will not disagree with Damian regarding the mtik patch. :)

This **IS** an Mtik issue and affects more than just Tranzeo devices.

Chuck,

Yes, and we are jealous :-)

We did a great job on getting real estate. We are one top of 50% of the top
25 tallest structures in our area.
But in our market/topology, that is no where near good enough to serve
"everyone".
But then again, its not really necessary to serve "everybody".

Re: [WISPA] NOGO's

2008-10-14 Thread Tom DeReggi
We've had this topic before, from the perspective that, one's chance to
accurately predict and/or have a successful install heavily relies on their
market topology, not just processes. Example... a) AP on 2000-ft mountain
looking down on a flat town versus b) urban environment with tower height
restrictions and tall buildings and trees blocking LOS.

What I can say is... When we started out, we had a 90% failure rate, and we
spent the time to manually do pre-mapping studies. Now, we have about a 90%
success rate, and usually we just do a quick Google map look. So what
changed?

1) Almost all leads that come in, come in pre-qualified (in target served
areas).
2) We have much more towers and relay site infrastructure in place now. (to
have more chances to get to it)

These were due to changes in our marketing processes, not changes due to our
technical processes.
And of course also, growth.

[WISPA] Making coverage maps with free software

2008-10-14 Thread Randy Cosby
First, you need to learn how to make a coverage map in Radio Mobile.
I won't try to show how to build coverage maps, these guys do a really
good job:

http://www.pizon.org/radio-mobile-tutorial/rf-coverage-plot.html

http://pe1mew.nl/radiomobile/

After you've figured out how to do the map and become familiar with
radio mobile, do the following:

Create a map with your AP location as the center point. Make the map
size as small as you need based on what your realistic distance will be
with your ap.

Turn the map gray scale (edit, force gray scale)

Then, run either a visual coverage or a (more accurate) single polar
radio coverage map. Set the color to solid, not rainbow, no contour line.

File, save picture as... Save it as a .png file.

Open the file in Paint.net (http://getpaint.net)

Use the magic want (shortcut key "S")

SHIFT-click on your colored coverage area to select it.

Hit CTRL-I to inverse select (select everything BUT the coverage)

Hit DELete. This will erase everything BUT the coverage area.

Hit F4 to change the opacity. I usually like something around 120 or
so. This makes the image semi-transparent.

Save the file and exit paint.net

Go back to the folder where you saved the .png file. You will find
a .kml file with the same name. Double click that to
open google earth.

You will now see a semi-transparent coverage map over the top of the
"earth."

Now, in Google Earth, right click on the file name under "Temporary
Places." You may want to save it now to My Places. After
right-clicking it, do a "Save place as". Save the file as a .kmz file.

Post that file on your web server.

Go to Google maps on the web http://maps.google.com/

In the "find" box, type the URL where you saved the .kmz file. For
example, http://www.infowest.com/earth/1.kmz

You will now see an overlay in google maps for your area. You can make
a simple page for your employees with links to the various maps this
way. I like to look at them with the Terrain option turned on.

You can also embed a map on a different web page using the "link" link
in Google Maps. See
http://www.infowest.com/Residential/Wireless/maps/New-harmony-kanaraville/
for an example.

There's more you can do with the Google earth plugin (
http://code.google.com/apis/earth/ ) for browsers as well, but it's much
more complex. Have fun, hope this is a useful starting place.

The first gen Tranzeos were not so good At all.

The 902 serieis.. Much better. 900 can be voodoo though. I consider it and a 18
db yagi the last chance for desperate customers.

I think this number is going to fluctuate a lot depending on a number of
things.

1. Frequencies available - we typically only use 5.8 or 2.3 (MMDS). Not
good for NLOS installations. I'm looking into 900 for some areas to get
around this problem..

2. Topography. Big flat areas with mountains surrounding them will be
easier to hit with high-up towers. Crazy southwest desert outcroppings,
cinder cones, canyons, etc. make it difficult here.

3. Vegetation - palms vs pine trees

4. Area covered / density. Chuck and Travis have HUGE areas. I'm
impressed with how much they do cover.

I do agree that "nogo" numbers are something we need to study more
closely and try to improve upon. Some great ideas here (google mapping
nogos, etc.)

Doing coverage maps with Radio Mobile and Google Maps / Earth is not
really hard. We use those extensively. I'll try to write something up
soon.

Re: [WISPA] NOGO's / 900hmz

2008-10-14 Thread Travis Johnson
Hi,

In our experience with Trango 900mhz, it does work well in SOME areas.
The biggest thing is making sure you use horizontal polarity as vertical
is pretty noisy (even here in Idaho, we have seen -50 noise across the
entire 900 band in vertical polarity).

The other thing to remember is 900 is not "magic". Yes, it will go
through some trees, and even "through" slight hills, but it is still a
very noisy spectrum. We have installed customers on 900 that work great
for a year, and then all of sudden their connection goes bad. We usually
end up having to do something different (frequency, tower, etc.) to get
them working again.

So yes, it does work, and I would rather install a customer on 900 than
just walk away and say we can't install them... but it does have it's
challenges that are unique to 900. For example, having a marginal signal
on a rooftop, and moving up or down 3-4 feet and having an excellent
signal. ;)

Just curious, how are you dealing with interference that comes from the
neighbor of an existing or potential customer, i.e. you survey a
potential's house and see noise level -58 on 900su (rssi being -76)
anyway the noise seems to be coming from a neighbor (non-customer) how
do you approach the situation? This seems to be an increasing problem
for us in the 900mhz

2008-10-14 Thread Patrick Nix Jr.
Anyone using old utility poles for aerial real estate? Our local
electric company has agreed to let us have the old extracted poles for
$0.20/ft. any suggestions for installing poles and mounting equipment
onto them? Lengths are 30-40ft

Thanks

Re: [WISPA] Interference at the neighbors

2008-10-14 Thread Martha Huizenga
We don't have a ton of interference that we can tell is coming from
neighbors vs something else. However, if we don't get a good signal at a
potential customer then we don't install there. I don't think there is
much you can do about interference except to change your own network.
However, I would be interested in hearing from others on this topic. I
believe we have some interference from the new police cameras around our
neighborhood, but haven't been able to find the right person to talk with.

Note the operative words "visits" & "before" in the question...

The install truck roll is the only truck roll.
