It was $3500 to start, $1000 min a month, but the deal killer was the 5 year
contract.

We use wood pallets with cement blocks when needed. Wood pallets are free
for the asking most of the time from area businesses.

Hello list,

I am setting up a PtP link between two gas stations for a client. I am going
to be using two Nanostation M5 units going about 1/2mi diagonally across a
highway. I'd like to mount them to a 5ft mast then to a non-penetrating roof
mount, as the only place with clear line-of-sight is on the roof of both gas
stations. Flat roof without much of a lip to mount an antenna to. All of my
Google searches come up with much larger non-penetrating roof mounts, 3' or
wider, which are designed for much larger and taller masts. Also very
pricey, $150 or more each.

Does anyone make a small non-penetrating roof mount, say 2ft square out of
metal with an attachment to hold a 5ft mast or including a 5ft mast? Maybe a
single cinder/cement block to weigh it down would be all that is needed.
Won't ever need to go higher.

Or do you have another suggestion for mounting?

Thanks in advance,

Josh

Re: [WISPA] shielded rj45 ends

2013-07-24 Thread Dave Hulsebus
Thanks Josh,

We've tried that, a bit, more than a bit, pulled to the breaking point, none
of that makes a difference. We've tried multiple crimping tools. We can put
a non-shielded connector on and it snaps right in. We didn't notice this
issue until these last three boxes purchased in late May. That's why I ask
if others have seen this. Looking at the connector under a magnifier, I can
see a difference between tabs on them and other shielded and non-shielded
connectors. The difference is the distance from the front of the connector
to the tab's indentation made where it snaps and locks. I haven't gotten the
caliper out to measure yet and can't seem to get a good picture with the
camera we have here today. I will bring in a camera tomorrow and see if if I
can get a picture of them side by side.

It happens to NB's we've had in the field for more than a year as well. I
have a few connectors from CTI left that don't have that issue. Plug in,
snap, just don't like the way the ground attaches to the connector.

Thank you,

Dave

Yes.

There are two styles. One has no metal shielding, the other does. Both are
expensive (relatively) but I'm addicted to them. I love not having to worry
about how far back I strip things. Not having to worry about wires crossing
when pushed into the connector (I can check them before crimping) etc.

[WISPA] 900 MHz Vert Omni? 3 MTI 120 degree panels 4 sale....

2010-04-24 Thread Dave Brenton
Hello Gang,

Great to be back with WISPA - too long out of the saddle here.

I'm looking for advise about purchasing a 900 Mhz Vertical Omni Antenna
(10dbi+)
for my primary AP here in Carlisle (Dover) TN and at least two other
locations
to be deployed over the next few weeks.

Also would like feedback about Ubiquity 900 MHz gear.
We may very well dump canopy here in favor of a true
spread spectrum product.

We are pulling down 3 MTI MT-263004/NH
902-928 MHz 12.5dBi 120º Horizontal Pol.
Base Station Antenna - for the right price these
MAY be for sale (unless we can figure our how to convert them to V-POL)

Looking forward to any and all responses -

Thanks in advance,

Dave

There's 250 MHz available in mid 5 GHz. It can easily do 10 miles on a PtP.
With bigger dishes, it can obviously go farther.

Ubiquiti claims 150 megs of TCP/IP throughput, which is possible if you
 add
upload and download as is common in the unlicensed world.

I couldn't tell from any documentation whether they were 20 MHz or 40
 MHz.
The FCC certification wasn't overly clear, but I think it can do both.

It can do both but require 40 MHz channels to achieve 150Mbps+ MIMO
 throughput and 100Mbps+ SISO throughput.
Finding a 40 MHz window that is clean on both vertical and horizontal
is quite a challenge these days.

Subject: [WISPA] 3.65 earth station contacts

I am now licensed for 3.65, but I have to get permission from an earth
station (Andover ME), as I'm just inside it's 150km radius.

The PDF showing the list of earth stations and exclusion zones looks useful,
but is really just the start of a goose chase.

The other ISPs in the states surrounding the earth station either have no 3.65
links registered, or the links fall outside of the zone. Had there been an ISP
nearby that had gone through this, I would have checked with them.

The call signs located at Andover when you go to register a location, or
reference the PDF listing are not in the FCC ULS database. They are apparently
FCC international bureau issued call signs and IB does not have a searchable
online database and did not return my phone call.

I can't find anything in the chamber of commerce business directory for
Andover, the switchboard yellow pages for andover.

The Andover earth station is owned by MCI/Verizon and I get the usually
helpless script followers on the other end of the line, Sir, we just open up
trouble tickets, or try calling this number in really poor english.

Has anyone else been through this? How do I get the information needed to
request an agreement?

Thanks!

I don't think it's just that - during the install process, I was
asked if I wanted to convert my old mailboxes. I said yes, and it did
its thing for about 90 minutes.
A couple years ago, I looked at Smartermail, but they didn't support
(at the time) the notion of a default domain, or automatically
recognizing what IP address you were using. Thus, we'd have had to
retrain all our users (and reconfigure a zillion computers) to use
'u...@domain.org' instead of just 'user' as their POP3/IMAP/Web

The mailboxes are still there, and are perfectly accessible via POP3

Cliff,

We are buying 40 and 50 ft telescopic poles from Nello in Bremen, IN. I
only buy them when we are ordering tower sections so we send our own
truck and trailer. Not sure how much freight would be.

Rohn makes a 30 - 40 - 50 ft. units as does Nello - they bought out
portions of Rohn a few years back.
Tessco carries the Rohn 50 ft for around $100.

Thanks,

I started to take the questionnaire then stopped. It's really asking the
 wrong question.

Those are ALL VERY important. But I worry about almost none of them.

A question that I would be much more able to put realistic thought into
would be what I think the ODDS are of x happening on my network. Not could
it, but how likely I expect it to be.

[WISPA] Vent pipe installs?

2008-01-11 Thread Dave Brenton
Gang,

I'm FINALLY entering shake-down mode here and
now I've thinking more about stuff that I've not considered.

Have many of you mounted your CPE gear to customers
roof-top vent pipes?

If so are there any down-sides to doing so?

It seems like a pretty stable mount to me
but if there's a good reason not to do it,
I'd sure like to hear it.

Thanks

Re: [WISPA] WR 900 question

2007-11-16 Thread Dave Hulsebus
Chris, We had a similar situation this week and found that our cavity
filter was the cause of our problem. I have a number of the 2.5db loss
filters from WR we got five years ago. None have ever been mounted
outdoors. When we opened it up we found calcium deposits in the copper
tuning tubes. We user CLR to clean them and re-inserted in the filters -
problem gone. I had a newer .5db loss filter in an attic of one of our
buildings this past summer, gets up to 150F in the attic. That filter
also had calcium inside. One day all the clients started dropping off
line. That one didn't appear as noise, but as signal loss. An old
machine shop guy told me that aluminum would draw moisture into it over
time. Having been a physicist 30 years ago, I'm not sure I believe what
he said but he's been around for 50 years doing metal work. Anyone else
have a thought on aluminum drawing moisture through itself into the filter.

We have a WR 900 MHz cell that saw a sudden 10 db jump in noise.
Running spec ans from other towers doesn't show this rise in noise in
the same band. Doing sweeps from the tower using another device, albeit
600' lower than the affected ap, we still don't see the noise floor
rise, even when we run a scan pointed straight at the ap. I know we
cant exactly mirror conditions at the ap from a lower altitude, but
shouldn't we see some of the noise that it is reporting? Im wondering
if we have a bad piece of gear up there...
CPE units seem to be receiving signal as normal, but ap side is having
trouble hearing them. Could wet connectors cause behavior - we had
torrential rain followed by high heat.

Thanks
Chris

[WISPA] Subscriber Module Mounts?

2007-11-15 Thread Dave Brenton

Guys,

I'm nearing an operational state here, at long last.

Now I'm looking at the fiddly-bits that I've
overlooked or minimized for some time.

It has occurred to me that you must have
a preferred brand or style of mounts for
subscriber gear.

(FYI - all my gear will be Motorola Canopy)

I've seen a few mounts that are basically a
pipe hanger bracket and a hunk of tubing,
while there are others that are much more
along the lines of SatTV dish installs.

Advise of any kind will be warmly welcomed.

My selection criteria has and always will be,

Maximum bang for minimum practical bucks.

I see no future in buying stuff that
will have to be replaced in a year or
two. That's penny-wise and pound-foolish.

Thanks to all in advance.

Re: [WISPA] Cisco Wireless Bridges

2007-10-21 Thread Dave Hulsebus
Don, I did test the 1400 integrated units as a PtP bridge last summer
for 60 days. Worked flawlessly. Never set it up as an AP though. I liked
that it used two runs of 75ohm cable up the tower to the units with
three grounding blocks along the 150 ft path. I didn't keep them because
the Trango Atlas units we tested also preformed flawlessly and were half
the price. I'm not sure it was the right decision as it was the Trango
unit on that tower that took the lightning strike last night outside
Louisville, nasty storms. Lost the protected POE, the radio, and the
Ethernet surge on that line. None of the other 6 radios in use even had
a hiccup but are all coax not POE. Heliax LDF7 LDF6 and 4.5. Now that I
have it to do over again, I'll use elliptical coax for the 5.3 GHz link
along with external antennas.

I do have a used 1/2 Trango Atlas Bridge 5010M-INT for sale if anyone is
interested. Otherwise I'll put it on eBay next week. First dibs goes to
a WISPA member.

Send an e-mail off list please.

[WISPA] - Anyone use Moto's Prizm?

2007-09-14 Thread Dave Brenton

Hey gang,

Thanks for the advice about servers.
I'm working hard to get this thing lit up.

I'm wondering IF any of you have hands-on with Moto's Prizm
Server software?
I'm planning to run it under Red Hat Enterprize V4 - However
I have no feel for how strong a server I need to support it.
I'm having a helluva time finding real recommended minimum
hardware requirement.

The tech support guy I spoke to at Moto strongly discouraged
using AMD hardware, although I could not get a real reason for
that out of him. He fell back on Intel just works.

As I'm about as anti-WinTel a guy as you'll meet, I'm not
satisfied with that sort of answer.

Any thoughts? Comments? Yawns grin

Feel free to contact me off-list if that seems best.

Thanks loads,

[WISPA] DIY Server Questions

2007-08-29 Thread Dave Brenton

Hi Gang!

I'm finally, at long last building my Network Operations Center
and would love to hear recommendations from the brave
souls out there that build their own hardware.

I'm looking for recommendations for motherboards,
rack-mount case vendors, Rack vendors, etc.

I must admit I have a bias against Intel-based systems,
but would defer to experience supporting an Intel platform.
I will in every instance be running on flavor or another of Linux
for all my OS needs, should that have a bearing on the response.

My previous experience favors ASUS motherboards, and
good name-brand memory devices. I have lost faith in most
of the Disc Drive makers, however Shugart's 5 year warranty
is tempting me in their direction.

Any thoughts, comments, etc are welcomed.

If appropriate, you may contact me of list.

Re: [WISPA] Low cost generator

2007-07-01 Thread dave
I'm in the market for a generator and came across this one.

[ snipped link ]

That's either the very same generator I have, or very close to it.

(Actually, it's just very close. Ours can run on either propane or
natural gas, and it's presently wired up for the latter.)

Sadly, in the five months since we moved to our new office, with that
fancy new generator, we haven't had a single power outage. Not so much as
a flicker. It pops on once a week for its exercise cycle, and I've done
the flip the big switch and make sure the generator fires up test a
couple times, so I assume it works.)

As with any big purchase, shop around. Ours was $500 cheaper than the
price on that Web site; we just had Lowe's special-order it for us.

[WISPA] Net to Industry - So Many Questions

2007-05-23 Thread Dave Hannum

Hello,

My group is new to the industry. We are in the planning stages of a point
to multipoint network in rural Ohio. I've been scouring the web for
statistics on wireless networks in terms of penetration, growth rates and
projections, etc. The info is very limited, to say the least. Is there any
place we can look to find more of this info, so that we can approach
potential investors. Also, what should we be paying for backhaul? I've
seen reports that say it should cost us $10/Mb. Is that synchronous? Our
backhaul provider is planning on charging us roughly 60x this
- synchronous. How can we know if we are getting a good rate? This is a
hilly area - foothills of Appalachia. How can we know what is the best
equipment or system to go with. We have so many questions, yet it seems so
few places to get answers. It appears that this is a profitable industry -
one we want to get into. However, we are just not sure at this point. If
any of you are operating systems in rural, hilly areas, we'd love to talk
with you.

Sorry for the all over the board post, but we're under the gun to get
going and we just have so many questions.

Kind Regards,
Dave

Re: [WISPA] Net to Industry - So Many Questions

2007-05-23 Thread Dave Hannum

Rick,

Thanks for your reply. We have investment money - plus we have an agreement
to work with one of the largest rural water districts in the nation to use
their tanks. This helps a LOT! They have power at most of them already.
Plus, we have access agreements on the other towers we need. I'm a techie
so I'm cool with the acronyms - well, I think I am. But anyway, I'm
checking out your tower link because we are looking at building one tower.

Thanks again,
Dave

The short answer is that there is no short answer. Every scenario is

you even get familiar with all the acronyms let alone the technology.

Unless you have a large pile of cash at your disposal, I'd suggest
you start a tiny pilot project at the very least. That way you can
gain some familiarity with it all before you sign the dotted line.

My 2 cents. For tower info, I can help a little:

Re: [WISPA] Malware monitor Device

2007-05-15 Thread dave
Is there any device on the market that would monitor that would sit
between my network and my internet feed and do this:

 1-monitor customer traffic
 2-identify problematic traffic(malware,storms, ect)
3- Redirect those customers to a Cleanup portal

I'm not sure whether it covers broadcast storms, but Barracuda Networks
does offer a spyware firewall. As I understand it, it's basically a
transparent Web proxy, that bounces probably-infected PCs to itself, where
there's a Web-based cleanup tool. Gets you most of the benefits of all
your customers' PCs having Spybot or Ad-Aware installed (and up-to-date).

I've not used it, but I do own a couple of Barracuda's mail filtering
boxes, and they generally work pretty well.

If you're interested in one, talk to Mac Dearman. His company is a
Barracuda reseller, and Mac's just a generally swell guy regardless. :)

Re: [WISPA] Switch that will surrive outdoors

2007-04-23 Thread dave
I am in need of a switch that can live outdoors in an enclosure. It
needs to be small (5 ports) and cheap as the customer dose not want to
any more that he has to. It also needs to surrive the hot and cold
temps that it will experiance. Any reccomendations?

Most of our towers are running on Netgear FS105 and FS108 switches (the
ones in the blue metal boxes, not the cheap plastic ones), and the
occasional Linksys el-cheapo switch (don't have the part number handy). We
only have about one switch per year die, and that's usually from lightning
or power surges, as opposed to weather per se. They're not special fancy
magic weatherproof switches, but they work just fine for us.

This is in the midwest US, so the temperature extremes are 0 and 110
Fahrenheit. Your weather may vary.

The FCC seems to have finally realized that Form 477 is pretty much a

also ties in with a Notice of Inquiry:

The above says, as near as I can tell, 477 is a Kleenex tissue of lies.
Hey, at least they admit it.

Commissioner Michael Copps: Our statistical methodology seems almost
calculated to obscure just how far our country is falling behind many

[WISPA] Re: Wireless Digest, Vol 26, Issue 11

2007-04-08 Thread Dave Hulsebus

Jim,

I echo feelings that sectors and an in depth look at the spectrum
already in use in the areas you wish to serve. You must become familiar
with your landscape. Sometimes hills that block signals can be a good
thing because they also block a lot of interferences. 900MHz tends to
travel 50 or more miles unobstructed. I use those hills to cover small
60-90 degree wedges that would have otherwise been reachable because of
the same hills Water tanks have been helpful to fill in areas but my
greatest success has come from towers twice the distance or more above
treetops. My coverage area is very hilly with a lot of trees.

I have been happy using WaveRider gear and the filters designed for
their systems. It's more expensive using towers because of coaxial cable
costs, but I also don't have to climb a tower to fix a radio problem. As
I've deployed on water tanks in the area our costs are less than
Motorola Canopy systems and we have more channel choices - 7 verses 3 or
4 for Canopy I think. Canopy systems use an 8MHz wide channel, whereas
WaveRider uses a 5.5 MHz channel and others as low as 5MHz. Of course
the top and bottom channels 905 and 925 can become unusable in many
environments because of paging and cell systems. I've been able to
structure my sectors that we can use them anyway. We use a mix of
horizontal and vertical polarization base station antennas. We use Antel
antennas - watch the numbers they measure power in dbd verses dbi. As a
rule of thumb you add 2.1 to dbd to estimate dbi. I have recently tried
Tiltek and PacWireless antennas but will go back to Antel for our future
deployments. Again more expensive than others but my experience says
they are worth it. Adjacent transmission sites get opposite polarity
antennas and as much separation between channels as I can get if they
point at each other or can be seen by each other. On some transmission
sites I use 3 - 120 deg sectors, others maybe a 180 deg and a 90 or two
90's, I have one site with one 120 because that's all I needed to cover
and when you use multiples transmitters on a site you need separation
between channels. I'm not all that familiar with Motorola gear but
others on the list are. They have a GPS sync function that allows them
to reuse more channels throughout their network. I don't want to start a
feature / religious war about brands but these are my 5 plus years
900MHz experiences. I've found no two sites are anywhere near the same
as I've designed and built my system from the center out. We now operate
more than 20 transmission sites around a county in southern Indiana. I
have 12-15 more to go before we cover 95% plus of the people and we'll
probably get there this year. I will say that WaveRiders throughput is
more limited 2 MB verses 6MB for Canopy. In my area that hasn't been an
issue yet. I have heard of an 8MB POE transmitter due out this summer.
Maybe Scott Carlson, who is a vendor member, would like to comment. grin.

I've have tested Canopy, Trango, Tranzeo, and Ubiquiti cards and without
filters none will work very well. Without filters noise floors can be
80db or less. With filters and the right design you can get better than
90db in most cases. I've tried entire band filters 902-928 and found
them to be mostly ineffective in eliminating the noise from pagers and
cells sites. The biggest problem I see in looking at Tranzeo, and
Ubiquiti, other than the later isn't certified, is the lack of filter
availability. WaveRider's filters are centered around the channels they
support and that's made all the difference for us. Some of our sites
were designed to transmit 3 miles because that was our target, others
are designed to go 8 miles because that was our target. Your maximum
power output is 4 watts or 36 EIRP but you don't always have to put out
that much power, sometimes less is better.

My disclaimer. I don't own or have interest in any of the companies I've
discussed other than my own. Just my thoughts.

Good Luck,

Re: [WISPA] calea meeting with the fbi

2007-03-07 Thread Dave Brenton
Folks,

I do not want to rant or in anyway fan flames here,

but I Do want to ask the question:

What are the Big Kids doing about CALEA and the

talk seeping out, about data monitoring / logging from DOJ?

Earthlink, AOL (and it's clones), MSN, ATT?

Are those guys on the sidelines just waiting for the

shoe to drop, or busily building the mega-cache systems

needed to transcribe every last packet passed over their

  networks?

  Somehow is seems unlikely.

I don't see how, just because we are small and independent,

we have anymore to fear about the implications of these

seemingly invasive measures. If anything it would seem

we have much less to fear, since the shear volume of data

from traffic logging would render it almost useless.

Frankly I don't (with my admittedly limited understanding

of the true nature of IP traffic) understand what is to prevent

these traffic loggers or other data traps to be inserted

anywhere on the much-fewer backbone transports and

be done with it.

(In truth I highly doubt that this has not in fact already been done).

At any rate EFF.org and others are our best allies in trying

to tame this dragon before it bites. I too, have profound concerns

about the right-to-privacy (as if any of us has had that for years).

But the more important issue is the FACT that the COSTS of any and

all monitoring MUST, in view of the 13th Amendment, be borne

by the AGENCY that wants the information, NOT US.

For those who have forgotten, the 13th Amendment abolished

involuntary servitude. In short we CANNOT be compelled

to work for Uncle Sam for FREE. We MAY by Court Order

be compelled to provide access to execute a search for a

specific duration. But we do not have to DO the search for

them, provide them with the forensic tools to investigate,

or in anyway become unduly financially inconvenienced,

in the execution of the lawful activity.

But Dave, (I hear you saying) they make the phone companies

provide information, Local Usage Details and the like

under subpoena from the court. Why can't the do that to us?

Well in part they can, but remember that Telecos are those

freaks of the business world: The Regulated Utility.

When these Companies agreed to operate as Regulated

Monopoly Utilities the gave up many rights and assumed

special responsibilities that Normal Business don't have.

The requirements to log usage details was long ago shown

to be a normal part of the Telco Business flow, for their

in-house billing and cross-billing purposes. The Courts

asking to view selected sections of those logs for fact finding

was viewed as duty the comes with the privilege to

do business without competition.

I'm no attorney, nor have I played one on Television,

but I think I have a fairly firm grip on reality.

 (Why is there Air?) grin

I think we should be looking hard at what our older-bigger

cousins in the ISP industry are doing and be prepared to join

in with them for injunctive relief - IF we are asked to SPEND

anything preemptively to serve the cause of law enforcement.

We are NOT Monopoly Tel-Co s.

Law Enforcement Agencies are in-fact the ones with

the guns and badges, not us.

I didn't run for Sheriff, I was not elected to the office,

I have taken no oath of office. I am therefore NOT a law

enforcement officer, entitled to monetary compensation.

I WILL IN NO WAY IMPED the work of Law Enforcement

but I cannot LEGALLY be compelled to do it FOR them

at my own expense.

Please Notice I am NOT discussing the value or virtue of

the law enforcement activities - That's politics, and has nothing

to do with the LAW or it's execution.

So what the heck is my point?

I Honestly believe, IF some Policy is promulgated that costs US

money or time (which IS WORTH money) to do THEIR work, it

WILL be held unlawful on several grounds.

I THINK that supporting EFF or others that share our concerns

and raising these points to them may put this dragon in a cage.

I feel certain that the BIG KIDs are thinking this way.

I think we should too.

That, and thirty nickels will buy you a cup of coffee.

Re: [WISPA] failing Canopy 900

2007-02-20 Thread Dave Brenton
Jack and Brian,

I noticed this thread just a few minutes ago.
I didn't see mention of what polarity the
OMNI in question is.

Most, if not all, 900 paging is VERTically Polarized.
That is why the integrated antenna Canopy products
all use HORIZontal polarization out of the box.

So one would naturally want your omni to be HORIZontally
polarized.

This little trick all by itself should get 25 db or so rejection
of the unwanted 929-930 stuff.

I also agree with Marlon that sectorizing could help
(depending on the direction of the offending signal)

Basically selecting an AP operating frequency as far
away from 929-930 as possible (preferably 906 Mhz)
and facing THAT sector toward the offending signal,
should help since the AP's receiver selectivity will
maximally attenuate the out of band signal.
The Subscriber Modules in that sector would
all have their backs to the offending noise,
so the front-to-back ratio of the antenna is
buying them 20+ db rejection.

Of course if the Subscriber Modules in another sector
(and another channel) are facing the noise,
the problem may pop-up there.

It's all about angles and SM antenna pattern at that point.

Maybe this will help.
Hope so.

  Brian,

Bandpass filters come in different band widths. Some are full-band
filters that pass 902-928 MHz and some are single-channel filters that
are
narrower and pass only one channel. The bandwidth of the two Ubiquity
filters are a little narrow to use across the entire band but if you are
using 912 or 917 as center frequencies, they should work well. If you're
using a lower center frequency, you'll need a filter that has a bit
wider
bandwidth but which still attenuates the paging frequencies a lot. The
availability of good whole-band bandpass filters seems to have
deteriorated a bit in the last year. There are more filters available
but
they seem to have poorer characteristics and sometimes higher prices. I
just looked at RFLinx and Hyperlinktech and I am not happy with their
current offerings. I did discover a notch filter that is tuned to
attenuate the paging frequencies while passing the 902-928 frequencies.
I
don't know the pricing but if it's priced reasonably then it looks like
your best bet. Here's the link:

A -36 dBm signal probably won't destroy your receiver or permanently
desensitize it however your best bet is to get confirmation from a
Motorola rep. The signals you see at 928-930 MHz are from one or more
paging transmitters. These paging signals could easily desensitize
your
AP receivers temporarily and cause a temporary inability to hear
  incoming SM signals.

Since you appear to be using antennas that are external to your APs,
you
can insert a bandpass filter between each AP and its antenna. This
will
attenuate the paging signals and allow the APs to receive SM's from
further away. If the paging transmitters ARE the cause of your
apparent
AP receiver sensitivity deterioration, then the bandpass filters
should
be helpful in reducing the frequency of occurance of the problem.

I have observed a discussion on the members only list, talked to people
with
insight and given it a lot of thought.

1.) I do think that WISPA needs to make a stand to promote membership
compliance to Part 15 rules. We should modify our mission statement and
our
 goals to reflect this.

2.) WISPA should assist and encourage non-certified vendors such as
StarOS,
Mikrotik and others to certify hardware/software/antenna systems that will
allow operators using these platforms to reach certification compliance
with
 minimal capital outlay.

3.) 100% Compliancy should be a goal with a Target Date of completion. I
personally believe that this Target Date should be no more than 18 months
out. We need to show the FCC that our industry recognizes the rules and
our
members are striving to bring their networks into compliance on a timeline
that is affordable and logistically achievable so that our clients have
minimal disruption. This will send a message to vendors that
certification
is not an option anymore. If they want to market their products to our
industry, they need to invest in certification. That may raise the price
of
equipment, but it is a necessary increase that our industry must bear if
we
 are to survive.

4.) We also need to recognize that the FCC has essentially given our
industry a gift with unlicensed spectrum (although not their original
intent
with the spectrum). This gift can be taken away with a swoop of a pen.

5.) WISP operators that publicly defy the FCC laws and mandates to fill
out
necessary forms such as Form 477 and 445 are in direct opposition to the
goals and ideals of WISPA. IMHO, if a WISP operator promotes anti-lawful
cooperation with FCC rules and guidelines on WISPA listservs, that
operator
should be banned from the WISPA listservs. WISPA does need to improve
credibility with the FCC and we cannot do this by allowing tyrannical
posts
that blatantly oppose following the law. That does not mean that we have
to
silence discussion or opposition to current rules, it just means we need
to
clarify that current WISPA policy does not agree with their personal
views.
If their intent is to change WISPA policy, they need to submit a policy
change submission to the WISPA board for consideration and possible
polling
 of the membership.

6.) An observation that our competition (ILECs and Cable Companies) are
aggressively lobbying the FCC to shut down unlicensed bands as unfair
competition and an industry that in their view, openly breaks the law, is
 inevitable.

7.) Recognition of the damage that will be done to the rural market
economy
with the removal of the WISP industry is inconceivable. It is our
responsibility to protect the markets we serve by reaching out for
compliance as soon as we can.

8.) Our industry has developed dramatically in the last 10 years,
equipment
choices have improved, techniques have improved, network design has
improved. Yet we still have manufacturers who refuse to certify their
products. Their excuse seems to be that their customers will not pay
enough
to warrant certification. This seems to be a lame excuse in my eyes. I
recognize the quick lifespan of wireless components these days makes the
certification process very frustrating, to spend money and time getting
certified only to have new technology change the market a short time later
must be a manufacturer's nightmare. The fact is though, that new
investment
is entering this industry and more options will be manufactured that will
be
certified. Current non-certified vendors will face expulsion from the
industry unless they step up to the plate quickly.

9.) WISPA is run by a volunteer board of operators at this time. To
become
a truly effective trade association, we must look to hire a full time
staff
which will form procedures, policy, update website content, email members,
collect dues, manage books, lobby more effectively and work through legal
matters with FCC versed attorneys. While in its infancy

[WISPA] - What about insurance?

2007-02-12 Thread Dave Brenton
Hello Gang, and Happy Monday.

I'm wondering what kind of insurance y'all use
for your businesses? Particularly insuring towers
and access points against weather damage, lighting,
wind, etc. or do you self-insure.

What about liability? Installer Accident?

Any advise will be appreciated.

[WISPA] - Can anyone tell me how many are we?

2007-02-08 Thread Dave Brenton
Gang,

I've heard various numbers, but I'd like to put a finer point on it.

How many WISPA members are there?

How many independent WISPs are there?

Thanks,

Dave Brenton

[WISPA] So Let's DO something.

2007-02-08 Thread Dave Brenton
,
blah blah blah.

I'm suggesting that such a Registry would serve US every
bit as much as the Regulator / Enforcement Community.
The point is that we will have a repository of information
about who's doing what where. (very helpful in knowing
who IS NOT doing bad stuff as well, or where no one's
doing anything).

II. A Type Approved Equipment Database

We should also insist on a Published Database of
TYPE APPROVED equipment (by Vendor) so as to
have NO Question IF the gear performs as required.
The FCC MUST have this information, and It MUST
be public knowledge. We should have it available to
US even if we have to take charge of formally creating
the database from their raw data.

Let us be clear here,
FCC Regulations PROHIBIT ABSOLUTELY the use
of non-TYPE APPROVED transmitters - FULL STOP.
Always Has. Equipment used in violation has always
been subject to seizure.

WISPA Membership should be contingent on using
TYPE APPROVED Equipment.
We are not, after all Junk Dealers are we?

Both of these Database Tasks are well within the
abilities of our members to create and moderate.

There are those who will throw dirt in the air and claim
public disclosure of this information will be anti-competitive.

I say nothing could be further from the truth. We are not in
this business the Kill each other, IF we've chosen to operate
in an environment where there are multiple players,
would it not be better to know, at the cost of a few key strokes,
what frequencies are available, who's using them and in
what way?

Would it not make it absolutely clear, that the signal that's
coming from a location NOT in the database is a rouge player
that needs to be ejected from the playing field?

Would it not help us provide accurate information to our
members, and the FCC, about how we use the spectrum we
have, that we KNOW how to use it wisely, and that we CAN
play nicely together like professionals?

Frankly I see this as essential. I Think that reason the
White Space Debate has gone on so long is exactly
because we have not stepped forward with a WORKING
plan of our own to demonstrate to them that WE Do
take this business seriously, and that Do Want to
Behave as Professionals.

I'm sure there's more that could be said, but I think you
all get the picture.

Tell me where I'm wrong.

If Not let's get on with it. I'll Help all I can.

[WISPA] - Hello Group! - Can we talk towers?

2007-02-06 Thread Dave Brenton
Hello WISPA!

It's great to be aboard.

I have several questions about towers, but I'm going to
try to hold it to TWO, starting out.

1) Does anyone on the list have experience with the FCC/FAA maze?
Our Network Operations Center will be at the base of an
   as-yet-to-be-constructed 300 foot Commercial Grade
   Communications Tower.

In attempting to get the FCC/FAA Permit(s) to place this
tower I've run into a Catch-22, or so it would seem.

The FAA Forms want an FCC Registration Number, and of course
the FCC Forms want an FAA Registration Number.

   So. Who's on first?

I've searched and searched and cannot find a step-by-step or
flowchart explaining the procedure to get the permit process
started, let alone completed.

Anyone with some experience with this matter will be
a hero forever with me.

BTW to avoid the questions I explain right now that - -
NO we don't NEED a 300 Footer for our wireless coverage,
but... I live in the middle of Cell-Hell and I'm willing to
speculate the one or more of the Cell Providers in this
area will Co-Locate once an actual structure is in place.
Also the extra altitude will make if practical to Back-Haul
bandwidth for many-many miles thus reducing our wire-line
costs to a minimum.

2) Who's brands of towers are ya'll using?
I need some guidance for smaller towers
100-150 ft range, self supporting and guyed.

I have heard of some brands, but I also have concerns
about Wind Tolerance, since we are in an area that
does produce tornados from time to time.
I'd prefer to spend the money on a product that will
hold up and I'm not uncomfortable Climbing, IF I Must.

That's plenty for a first go.

Thanks loads,

 Hi All,

I'm looking for a crimper I saw someone talk about. It uses special
rj45 connectors that allow the cable to go through the end. Then
the crimper crimps and cuts to length at the same time.

Anyone know what it's called and where to get the connectors and the
 crimper?

 thanks!
