That particular box is a Metricom/Ricochet mesh radio (now essentially out of
business).
They offered a 56k/128k service for about 80 bucks a month.
Because of them, many power companies no longer allow mounting to street light
arms and tapping power from photocells.

Hello Ralph,
Very interesting read.
As an early Ricochet adopter I'd like to add one of these boxes to my "museum
collection" alongside my Ricochet PCMCIA card. Let me know off list if you can
come up with a good example.
Best,
Brad

Hi,
This issue with ComCast and their p2p connection blocking brings up
another issue I would like to discuss... false advertising.
I have a competitor that is selling "up to 4meg down by 1meg up" for
$34.95 with free installation and no contract. Another competitor is
doing "up to 2meg" for
Don, I did test the 1400 integrated units as a PtP bridge last summer
for 60 days. Worked flawlessly. Never set it up as an AP though. I liked
that it used two runs of 75ohm cable up the tower to the units with
three grounding blocks along the 150 ft path. I didn't keep them because

Thank you Dave! I really appreciate the feedback. We have had good luck
with the Trango units as well (particularly the 5.3 bridges). Did you get a
chance to test the throughput of the Cisco units? If so, at what distance?
Thanks.

Travis,
If you read in their TOS or UAP you would probably find what they call a
"best effort" clause. The truth of the matter is if your service is better
and your subs are leaving for "what is supposed to be" a faster service - -

So true, they will be back and the ones that left only take back what you
want. If one left and always wined then it's your chance to decline service
to them. As long as your customer service is better people will return when
they see the difference.

Yeah, I've got a competitor that advertises "12 mbps" speeds. He's
doing standard low-end wifi. Yes, the over-the-air speed might be
theoretically 12, but I ain't ever seen it.

Sheesh guys, do like we do. Make money from this stuff.
We bill out hundreds of dollars per month in overage fees when people go over
their 6 gig transfer limit. We do NOT control what they do but we do charge
them. Just like, um, lets see, gas, food, clothes, electricity, water, tires,
etc.
Marlon,
I'm glad using the metered model works for you... but not in this area,
nor ANY other area where there is cable, DSL, and 2-10 other wireless
providers that do not charge based on usage. Yes, I believe it is a
better model overall, but until the big boys (CableOne, ComCast, Qwest,

Travis,
Did you sit in on Image Stream's conversations about "packet limiting?"
I am going to have to find out a little more about that myself.
