Re: [WISPA] TEGs / Thermo Electric Generators
I was in the military, stationed in Fairbanks (30 miles south of Fairbanks actually) for four years. There was a spell during the winter of 1988/1989 where we went something like six weeks with the temperature never climbing above -40F. (Fun fact: Five of the top ten lowest temperatures ever recorded in Alaska happened in January 1989.) We lived on-base so didn't have to deal with propane or LP gas. But I don't recall any of my friends living off-base having a problem with it. That's not to say it didn't happen. A side note... I remember one day after that spell of cold weather when a Chinook wind blew up from the Gulf of Alaska. The temperature warmed clear up to 0F! We were all outside in shorts and short sleeve shirts firing up the BBQ grills. Yeah, it was cold, but it was 50F to 60F degrees warmer than what we had gotten used to. :) Sam On 11/26/2013 15:06, D. It actually *was* fun. The worst part about winters in Alaska (the interior of Alaska that is) isn't so much the cold - there's rarely any wind. You can don a parka, mukluks, and gauntlet gloves (think mittens on steroids), move around a little bit, and stay warm. But the lack of daylight is a real pain in the posterior. It's the darkest dark you can imagine, and like the cold, it's relentless. I did have pictures, but I think the wife took them when she upgraded to husband 2.0. I can ask her about them though - it was funny seeing a bunch of us out in the snow in summer clothes, barbequing our franks (And you're welcome. It was an honor.) Josh, There's supposed to be great halibut fishing in Homer. Never made it over there, but spent a ton of time in Valdez. When that drunk skipper decided to ram into Bligh Reef, we got a free invitation to come down and scrub oil off the rocks. (Wasn't so much an invitation as it was Boy, here's a bucket of Dawn and a brush. Go clean that mess up.) (For those of you who have never had the pleasure, it's not like cleaning up motor oil...this stuff was the thickest, tarriest, stinkiest stuff, and there was no way we were ever going to clean it all up. But we gave it our best shot.) I believe I'd take the cold over MOPP 5 chemical suits in Iraq. Or just practicing in Phoenix. You sir, have my utmost respect. Thank you. We bought in inexpensive electric start LP gas generator ($650) and used one of these: http://www.packetflux.com/index.php?main_page=product_infocPath=9products_id=55 We've got a 24v charger plugged into the generator and attached to the battery array. Yes, it DOES matter how cold it is. Propane won't create gas pressure below -43.6F and many propane gas pressure regulators will ice up and stop working below about +20F. This isn't a problem for many locations but it is still important to know what the limits are. We never found a good, reliable TEG for Alaskan environments. One device that is showing a lot of promise for Alaskan environments is the Sterling external combustion engine, running on diesel. No installations yet but testing continues. http://www.whispergen-europe.com/ In Alaska we often used micro-filtered #2 diesel fuel and inside, heated auxiliary holding tanks with redundant pumps. We also installed dual 6kw, deep-sump gennies with a smart controller that did exercising and supported fail-over operation. One helicopter flight to an Alaskan mountain top typically cost about $10,000. I think that depends on how far away the mountain is from base, how long you stay on top of the mountain and whether or not the helicopter is still running while you are working due to the cold and altitude. An hour in a helicopter in Alaska runs about $1800 last I checked and they bill in 15 minute increments only when the engine is running. Re: [WISPA] TEGs / Thermo Electric Generators
In my case, the propane was in various sized tanks from 100 gal Pig tanks to 1000 gal tanks depending on access. The most remote ones we used 100 gal pigs (14 per site ) and used helicopters to fly the propane. Made for more trips but the cost of the helicopter to fly big tanks was horrendous. Tanks were out in the weather but the lines and regulators were either in the shack with the TEGS or covered and insulated. Average winter temp without wind was about –10 F dipping to about –45 F. Not sure what the wind chill was. The people that bought the system augmented it with solar and wind (varying success with the wind as they could not keep impellers in the generators). It has been a couple of years so I am not sure of their present configuration or success. Even north of fairbanks Propane does not have much of an issue. Insulate and enclose for success. I use a 1500 gal tank so I can get the 1000+ gal discount. They even apply this discount to my home propane purchases for the rest of the year! ryan On 11/26/13 12:48 PM, Terry Hickey wrote: In my case, the propane was in various sized tanks from 100 gal Pig tanks to 1000 gal tanks depending on access. $10k is a round-number summary deployment cost. Most of the mountain top sites we had were at least an hour one-way from Anchorage. Re: [WISPA] TEGs / Thermo Electric Generators
Gas regulators have to have access to ambient pressure to work properly, so they can't be completely inside of the tank. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pressure_regulator However not all propane regulator designs have the same degree of vulnerability to icing and ones deployed outside in cold environments by professionals will likely be loss prone to icing than the Chinese stuff at the local hardware store. Icing is caused by the Ideal Gas Law. PV=nRT. A law of physics that would be silly to argue about. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pv%3Dnrt Also, there are devices out there designed to connect to a Propane tank without an intermediate regulator. Large tanks of propane can benefit from thermal inertia for a while during cold snaps. But arguing about the -43.6F limit on Propane would be similar to arguing about the law of gravity. And my only point has been to remind people about the cold limits that exist for propane and propane regulators and to accommodate those limitations in your designs accordingly. I hope this helps. I think we paid $1.60/gal. Like I said before, once you get past 1000 gallons you get a screamin' deal. I think we pay $7.00 (seven dollars) for the deliver fee too. It is 9 miles up pretty crazy logging roads to get to the site. ryan Clay Stewart November 26, 2013 at 5:11 PM Price of propane would make a difference in decision. It varies here from 2.99 to 3.35 a gal. So $3,300+ per fill up is a lot, so what are you paying for LP there? ___Wireless mailing listWireless@wispa.orghttp://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless D. I have a pic attached showing the simple power schematic The model is a 2T5 50W. The 40W is sitting standby. ryan Robert November 26, 2013 at 10:33 AM How often is the tank refilled for what power load?___Wireless mailing listWireless@wispa.orghttp://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless D. Sometimes paying a little extra for always on and always working is a good thing. The maintenance on the TEG I have running is: light let run for 1-5 years clean jets relight repeat. No moving parts and always working is a bonus. :) ryan On 11/26/13 9:25 AM, Scott Carullo wrote: Scott Carullo November 26, 2013 at 9:25 AM Remember, I can buy 4 7Kw gensets instead of the one tiny TEG :)Scott CarulloTechnical Operations855-FLSPEED x102From: "D. Re: [WISPA] TEGs / Thermo Electric Generators
Except to refuel it :) http://www.globalte.com With a genset, you are not looking at any major maintenance, maybe a few hours / year. and if it dies , you buy another one and you are still under the amount a TEG would cost. Hell, you could buy 4 gensets for the price of a TEG. Me thinks its a ripoff even though i think they are cool... -Mike On Nov 25, 2013, at 21:15, D.
