Re: [wsjt-devel] MAP65 Decode issue

2021-08-02 Thread Joe Dzekevich via wsjt-devel
Lloyd,

One suggestion. I assume you are on Windows. Next time you stop decoding,
do a control alt delete and see what processes are running and if any are
chewing-up resources. For example, if your web browser is GOOGLE Chrome, it
once and a while starts a task checking for bad software that really
chews-up CPU bandwidth. (It can be disabled by disabling its inheritance.)
Windows 10 also starts up a telemetry task that checks for things that may
hurt a future update now and then.

Just a thought.

Hello,

I have a strange issue with MAP65/Q65 decodes.

I can see very strong traces but no decoding.

This is an intermittent issue.

I close the program and restart it. This does not

cure the issue. I then reboot the PC and the problem

is resolved. Later on, the issue pops up again.

Has anyone else had this issue?

I have also downloaded the 00_0001.iq example.

When I open the file I see all of the signals on the Wide Graph

but, I get no decodes.

Thanks,

[wsjt-devel] FST4 Decode

2021-02-07 Thread Adrian
Calling on FST4 160m tonight, I saw this transmission with no decode ;

It doesn't seem to fit the 60 second vertical span.

Is there any vision of wsjtx being able to identify other modes besides the
one selected ?

Jim,

No. You would need to run separate instances of WSJT-X, one for each message
duration that you want to monitor. For example, on 2190m (LF) I routinely run
separate instances to monitor FST4W-1800, FST4W-300, and FST4W-120. You might
find that the “SWL” view (under the “View” menu) is useful when running

Makes sense. More questions, which came up first time I tried to use
FST4 on 160M, set up at 1839 kHz dial, 1050 Hz offset (I have a trash
intermod carrier at 1840). If I set my K3 DSP IF (2.8 kHz roofing

decoding, if I set up for FST4-60, would I also decode shorter period
FST (and vice versa)?

Also interesting, I saw several 15 sec sequence signals around 1050 and
1150s kHz offset, which seems awfully low for a station using 1840 as a
carrier frequency. I didn't bother to go to FT8 to figure out what they
were running.

Started out with 5W, was -8 near Phoenix. Looking for mode decodes
turned on the amp to get to 225W, now +8, almost exactly as expected, 30
min late a +4 decode. I've done enough on 160M with RBN testing antennas
to know that's QSB.

Final thought -- some of this ought to be added to doc for FST4. My
definition of a FAQ is what the author of the doc forgot. On principal,
I don't read FAQs, I read doc and manuals.

Jim,

The GUI controls (FTol for FST4W and FLow/FHigh for FST4) determine the upper
and lower limits of the candidate search window. To first order, these controls
do not affect the candidate detection threshold, so a very weak signal should
be detected regardless of the size of the search window in which it is located.

Increasing or decreasing the width of the search window will increase/decrease
the number of spurious candidates, so a larger search window means longer total
decoding time and higher false decode rate. That’s why we advise users to
narrow the search window to the smallest width that makes sense for the
purpose.

[wsjt-devel] WSPR Decode Questions

2020-11-27 Thread Rud Merriam

Hi,

I am attempting a WSPR decoder on a single board computer using its
analog to digital converter for sampling. It won't be able to do 12,000
samples per second. Looking a /wsprd/ I see it reduces the /wav/ file by
a large factor. It also looks like the /C2/ processing only use 375
complex samples / second. Working with a lower sampling rate should be
possible.

I tried decimating the /wav/ file and adjusting /wsprd/ to accept the
reduced set of samples to check the validity of the /wav/ input. Then I
can test my code using the decimated /wav/ file before moving over to
the SBC.

I adjusted the calculations for sizes in /readwavfile/. See code an
output below. It worked for reductions by 2 and 3, although the latter
only decoded 2 of the 3 spots in the file. When I tried 4 it /segment
faults/ in the loop that transfers /fftout/ to /fftin/.

I can't see why it is faulting. The sizes for the arrays look okay from
the values I output. I have done some DSP and FFT more than a few years
ago so the general concepts are there. But I may be missing details.

Here's the code and output for reduce by 2 and then reduction by 4,
which faults. Any thoughts or suggestions on a better way to handle this
testing? Also, pointers to other WSPR decoding code?

nfft2 = 46080; //this is the number of downsampled points that will
be returned

    nh2 = nfft2 / 2;

    double deci = 4.0;

2020-06-22 Thread Al

Bill,
As stated in my post, replaying .wav files that where saved during
when the original failure occurred does NOT cause the failure to recur.
Also note that while WSJT-X is in the fault mode, ALT-Z only clears
the indicator until the next time the decoder is supposed to run (~ 12
sec ). And then the decode indicator stays on again.

If I issue a ALT-Z at the beginning of a cycle, the decode indicator
goes off until the next 12 sec epoch and then stays on. If I pause
decodes by turning off the monitor, issue a ALT-Z and playback a .wav
file, the decode indicator comes on immediately and stays on.  ( Even
with .wav files that playback correctly after WSJT has been restarted. )

Once locked up, changing the decode depth has no effect on recovery
attempts.

If you have addition debugging trials.

You don't mention any background or describe what you have already read,
so it's hard to give a clearly focused answer. Be sure to start with
Section 17, "Protocol Specifications" of the WSJT-X 2.0 User Guide:

http://www.physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/wsjtx-doc/wsjtx-main-2.0.0.html#PROTOCOLS

Next I suggest exploring the "References" page on the WSJT web site:

http://www.physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/wsjtx-doc/wsjtx-main-2.0.0.html#PROTOCOLS

You might want to pay particular attention to items 4, 6, 25, 28, and 30
on that page.

Finally, of course, for algorithmic details you'll need to read the
source code. We think it's pretty well documented, internally. But we
have made no special attempt to make it into a tutorial on either
digital signal processing or coding theory.

Tom,

some stations are using clone programs that have bastardized the
DXPedition mode, or early 1.9.1-RC versions that did not have the
standard FT8 frequency lock out.
Nothing you can do about that, and it does not appear that you did not
receive any type of signal report.

Its up to you whether you want to log it.

Re: [wsjt-devel] no decode

2018-08-09 Thread John C. Westmoreland, P.E.
To All,

My rig did the same thing - checked timing with WWV - was exact, and still
no decode.

I'm using VAC's with my current rig - reset those - and wham! Works.

So, the ONLY reason this may not work IS NOT timing. Even if your timing
is off a bit you'll still see some decodes usually on 40m provided it's busy
and it usually is.

Check VAC's. Everything looks ok - but I tore down and then remade my VACs
and everything worked again. I agree it's a little strange.
(Note for those that could be wondering, I've retired my venerable Vista-64
motherboard.)

Re: [wsjt-devel] no decode

2018-08-07 Thread harold deitz via wsjt-devel
Chris,
I have been using "Dimension 4" for time sync.  Recently upgraded my OS to
Windows 10.  Found out that Dimension 4 won't work with Windows 10.  How do I
get Meinberg?

Re: [wsjt-devel] no decode - ntp ?

2018-07-26 Thread Rich - K1HTV
Chris,
With D4.exe turned off, have you checked your PC clock to see if it is gaining
or loosing time? Do a manual sync them wait 10 minutes and do another manual
sync. Then hover your mouse pointer over the Dx.exe icon in the lower right
toolbar. It should indicate the delta time from the last sync.

One thing I noticed which adversely affected my PC clock time. When I use the
PC mouse roller up or down while scrolling through documents or websites in my
browser, the PC clock time slows down.

I've been continuously using D4.EXE since a few years after its introduction in
1995. I've had no issues with it except when a server goes down. I've been
using 'time.nist.gov' which has been super reliable for years.

Hello Chris, Hello Tim

ntp time sync goes like this:

---
your PC sends local time t1 to ntp

time t2 arrived at ntp:
local time t1 + delay client to ntp ( = upload delay) - offset

ntp sends correct time t3

time t4 arrived at PC:
ntp-time t3 + delay ntp to client ( = download delay) + offset

expectation: up/down delay is the same. no jitter!

time t4 is the time to set the correct time at PC

Conclusion: delay for 'up' and 'down' must be the same.
No jitter is allowed on both legs.
---

Had a similar problem like yours using an ADSL line. The ADSL modem
had apparently some hick-ups (?) resulting of delays from time to time.
Using a utility, like Dimension4 seems to be not a good solution in
such case. Dimension4 connects to just one ntp server all the time.

If you having no decodes - dont' force sync etc, check immediately at
https://time.is/ to verify your local PC time. If your time is way
off, try Meinberg software.

Install Meinberg software and all will be good. During setup enter
your regional ntp pool server.
Ntp pool can be found here: https://www.pool.ntp.org/zone/north-america

I had this happen a couple of versions back, but that was the only time. If
you aren’t operating but just in monitor mode continuously, does it do the same
thing? I monitor 24/7 except when storms are in the area and have not had a
problem, even since the 1.9.1 version was released. It’s pretty strange to
have the waterfall showing signals, but all of a sudden nothing is appearing in
the decoded windows, but I have see it so I know it does happen. You are not
the first to report this recently, but it sounds like it is kind of rare.

Re: [wsjt-devel] Funny decode: LDE not ..... (r7034)

2016-09-10 Thread Greg Beam
One reason as to why using a narrow pass-band is less relevant today
than in past versions of WSJT-X is the addition of multi-pass decoding
where the software itself eliminates ( subtracts out ) a large number of
signals before a second pass is run on the same sample. Second pass
decoding changes the rules significantly from what "most" of us see as a
"sensible operating practice".

Traditionally, eliminating spurious emissions or large signal strength
stations through the use of variable BW controls, notch filters, or high
quality mechanical filter was required in order to achieve a reasonable
number of decodes. However, many of the new features added by Joe,
Steve, Bill and others now circumvent the need for such each extreme
receiver manipulation, evident by the sheer number of decodes per cycle
achieved in extremely crowded band segments such as; 20m, 40m in early
evening times, etc.

I still catch myself wanting to wrench the receiver controls on
occasion, mostly out of habit, but am finding less of a reason to do so
with the new features present in the latest development branches of WSJT-X.

Just my $0.02 cents worth.

Why swamp the passband when I am looking for only who I am calling?

And if i recall correctly, NF's component contains bandwidth ...

just gotta love the Collins-Type filters.

And, for what's it's worth, this is wider than I am usually set.

Not sure how you decoded yourself..
But...looks like you have a 1.2kHz filter turned on.  Your waterfall shows it.
You usually want the widest bandwidth you can do but at least 2.2kHz for JT65.

Hi Bob,

as you can see from the waterfall the WSJT-X receive was not disabled
for your 0940 transmission, I assume you have your rig Tx monitor on but
very low level and WSJT-X has decoded your own Tx audio. I believe this
is a minor glitch in the watchdog code that has eluded me so far. I also
assume that the watchdog triggered at the beginning of the 0940 minute.

Thanks for looking, Joe.

The only steps I can take to reproduce the problem are reverting to an earlier

occasionally, if at all).

I’m going to look closer into possible cockpit errors. Will advise if I come up

Hi George,

the most likely reason for this is a crash of the decoder component of
WSJT-X. If this is readily reproducible, particularly by playing back a
saved .wav file then that .WAV file along with a summary of the mode
used and other settings are most helpful.

[wsjt-devel] JT9 decode time

2015-11-27 Thread Eric NO3M
Running WSJT-X 1.7.0-devel r6133

In most cases, initial decodes are not displayed until :57, the majority
between :58-:59, and even some as late as :12 into what should be my
transmit cycle. This is really wreaking havoc on the ability to have an
actual QSO.

Settings

Mode: JT9 only
Decode: Normal
Settings->Advanced
Random erasure pattern = 6 (default)
Two pass decoding = OFF
All experience-based decoding = OFF
Aggressive decoding = 0

PC is Intel Core2 Quad 2.5 GHz, 8GB RAM.

An insight appreciated.

[wsjt-devel] JT65 decode

2015-10-19 Thread Alessandro Gorobey
Hi All,

today try to compile sfrsd but seems that "sfrsd2.h" need by sfrsd.c is
not in svn

So I do a crazy test.
I configure 3 version of wsjtx to use the some audio board on input on
windows 10.
Only the first have CAT, the other are defined as radio "none" and run
with different profile (option -r XXX)
Attach a couple of meter of wire as antenna to obtain a bad reception
and S/N on 15m. Automatic gain control OFF. The input audio signal is
around -20 dbTT (voltage ratio from "To Top" accepted by ADC)

1) wsjtx 1.6.1 r5977 (QT55)
2) wsjtx 1.6.0 r5881 (QT55)
3) wsjtx 1.5.1 r5513 (QT52, moved branch after tag of GA r5512)

Sincerely in this conditions the r5977 have obtained more decodes and I
not found false messages.
In the decodes there sometimes +- 0.1 on DT and +- 1dB but can be
obvious rounding problems.

Number of decodes:
GMT 12-14 14-16
1)253 440
2)221 431
3)218 428

The difference in ALL.TXT from 2 to 3 are so minimal that I skip other
analysis of 2.
In total I have:
1) 1002 lines
3) 929 lines

Seems that 1.6.1 decode better, but in addition to lines difference
there is 43 decodes in 1.5.1 that are not present in 1.6.1. Some are
R-20 or less, but some around R-10 that are good signal. I am sorry that
have not activated the full wav save.

Have any seen so much difference ?

Re: [wsjt-devel] No decode on strong JT9 signal

2015-02-18 Thread Joe Taylor
Hi Mike,

Thanks for posting those troublesome wav files. As it happens, I have
been busy looking at a number of similar examples of problematic files.

More or less from the beginning, the JT9 decoder has failed without
obvious good reason something like 1% of the time... and I'd like to
understand why.

Over the past several days I've been playing with an independent,
stand-alone JT9 decoder. It goes through many of the same steps as the
decoder in WSJT-X, but it organizes them in a rather different way.
Here are the decoded results of your three files:

1336 -4 0.1 3215 @ CQ AE5ZZ EM34
1338 -6 0.1 3214 @ W9MDB AE5ZZ -18
1340 -6 0.1 3215 @ W9MDB AE5ZZ -15

So YES, your example files are all decodable. Now I need to see whether
I can move capabilities of the test program back into WSJT-X without
destroying its snappy performance.

1336 is the initial JT9 decode that I replied to for AE5ZZ at -4dB

 1338 is the response.but it doesn't decode.

1340 one is the next response.but it doesn't decode either.

I tried these files on another computer with the same result

So either he lost time sync or the decode failed for some other reason. I
was able to complete a QSO with him later.

Are there later fixes for this in the current svn source? Should I build
the latest source level to correct?
Does the RC version offer any debug logging of ptt commands? If so, where?

Also, I have a hacked version of WSPR 4.0 that supports net rigctl to
QtRadio. Is there any interest in using my diffs to add support? If so,
will post...

 Running 1.5 r4966

 Here are three wav files:

 https://www.dropbox.com/s/0aj060t019t7hsf/150218_1336.wav?dl=0
 https://www.dropbox.com/s/64b84q7ba3zmxwz/150218_1338.wav?dl=0
 https://www.dropbox.com/s/5r3ppfe86u2lodu/150218_1340.wav?dl=0

1336 is the initial JT9 decode that I replied to for AE5ZZ at -4dB
 1338 is the response.but it doesn't decode.

1340 one is the next response.but it doesn't decode either.

I tried these files on another computer with the same result

So either he lost time sync or the decode failed for some other reason. I
was able to complete a QSO with him later.
