Re: [X2Go-User] Clipboard copy paste keeps being unreliable for years now
Hi, +1 For what I can tell, this only happens with the Windows client, even the latest one. I have never been able to reproduce it with the Linux client and I don't use the Mac client so I can't tell. As someone already said, pretty hard to reproduce, don't happen very often but often enough to be annoying. Most of the time it works flawlessly, but one thing that bugs the hell out of me is that copy paste via clipboard from Client to server does not work reliably. It works most of the time, but then it just fails, when I copy something, and paste in the target machine, nothing gets pasted. Now I want to troubleshoot and fix this once and for all. What causes this problem, why does copy paste fail sometimes? This is a known bug in mate and pretty hard to debug/fix apparently. There is a workaround anyway, you can create a small script that starts xautolock at user session start like this : #!/bin/bash xautolock -time 5 -locker "mate-screensaver-command -l" -notifier "notify-send -t 2 'Your session will be locked in 20 secondes' 'click here to cancel'" -notify 20 & You'll need these packages (for Ubuntu) : xautolock, libnotify-bin Regards, Walid Moghrabi TRAVAUX.COM BAT I - PARC CEZANNE 2 290 AVENUE GALILEE - CS 80403 13591 AIX EN PROVENCE CEDEX 3 - Mail original - De: "Jens Bürger" <jbuer...@arcor.de> À: x2go-user@lists.x2go.org Envoyé: Mardi 22 Mai 2018 23:17:19 Objet: [X2Go-User] MATE screensaver is not activated when connected via x2go Hello all, I am working with a fresh X2Go install based on Debian 9. Re: [X2Go-User] Load Balancers
I had many troubles making broker with agent-query-mode=SSH and loadchecker recently ... there were still a few bugs which make those not working reliably or not working at all. I would definitely recommend that you're up to date with the x2gobroker and all broker packages, mine is 0.0.4.0-0~1022 and there were many fixes very recently. It will depends on your needs but if you want simple load balancing without load checking (aka "roud robin distribution") which is fine for most needs, you can perfectly use agent-query-mode=LOCAL which works fine. If you use agent-query-mode=SSH, you need to have loadchecker working otherwise, you'll encounter problems with SSH query mode as soon as you have unavailable remote servers. By the way, for loadchecker (and broker in fact) to work properly, you need to deploy the broker SSH key onto the remote servers, there is a "x2gobroker-pubkeyauthorizer" script for that. Re: [X2Go-User] X2GO cli
Easiest method would be to use the client GUI at least once to create your session settings (it will create a $HOME/.x2goclient/sessions file on Linux, C:\\users\\.x2goclient\sessions on Windows) and then, from cli, just use : x2goclient --session= You can use the --session-conf to set another location for your sessions file. The sessions file is just a .ini style text file you can edit manually. Guys, So what's the best linux distro to run x2go on these days, in terms of the server, the system you connect to? Which would people recommend? RHEL 7.x is out, as are probably a bunch of the newer Gnome 3 desktops. Does anything running MATE work well? Running Debian 9.3 with lxde seems to work pretty well, using client 4.1.1.1 to connect. But at my $WORK, where we're mostly RHEL/CentOS based, it looks like sticking with CentOS 6.9 is the best solution currently. Which kinda stinks. Does Fedora work better or at least just as well when running the Mate desktop? Re: [X2Go-User] Some questions about X2go
Hi, Do you really need desktop sharing (aka "see what you see on your opened local session on your remote computer") or do you just need to open a session on the remote machine the Windows RDP way (contrary to the TeamViewer/VNC way) ? If so, you'll get far better performances and comfort opening a "MATE" session instead of a "Local desktop" session from your X2Go client. On my home PC with Windows 10 I have installed the X2go Client and inside it configured a session connecting to the Ubuntu host according to https://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/doc:usage:desktop-sharing . The connection is successful, but there are some issues: 1. The Ubuntu host's desktop is spread over two 4/3 screens. But The Windows PC only has one screen with 1680x1050 Pixels. So the display from the Ubuntu host is highly horizontally compressed, so that the texts are nearly unreadable. OK, this behaviour is documented, but is there a way to get it more readable? 2. If I (to solve the above issue) switch to something other than full screen mode in the session settings, the session crashes, when started. I have to close and restart the X2go Client. And then with settings set back to full screen mode the session runs again. Is there a way to avoid the crash without full screen mode? 3. In full screen mode I cannot see any mouse cursor. So hitting any user elements inside or on the windows inside the display from the Ubuntu host is very difficult, since they are reduced to half the width. Is there a way to see a mouse cursor? Or is this due to the compressed display? 4. Since mouse using is so difficult, I tried to close the windows from the Ubuntu host by pressing . But then I get a question from X2go to close the session. Is there a way to propagate key combinitions like to the remote host? Let me know if I can help with testing. I had a chance to set up a stretch system today and try live-build on it. It fails just as Widu described it, when you select a netboot image. It will build iso-hybrid images just fine. The underlying issues are two: 1) In jessie, live-build picks a sane default - I'm guessing syslinux - for all image types, when you don't specify one using the parameter --bootloader. Re: [X2Go-User] newbie question multiple monitors
This is because you're using the "Local desktop" mode which is, in fact, only a VNC connection on top of your local opened session on your workstation. This is not the best way to use X2Go bcause : * it works badly with multiple monitors * it is slow and not very usable * it needs that your local session is active and logged in X2Go is a remote desktop on top of X server remoting. This is NOT a tool that is used for remote access the way you can do with TeamViewer or VNC (even though there is such mode with the "Local Desktop" session). The "normal" way of using X2Go is with remote session through X server. But for that, you need a supported Desktop Environnement (DE) and currently some "modern desktops" are not or badly such as Gnome3, Unity or KDE Plasma. MATE, XFCE, LXDE and some others works well but this will NOT let you resume an already opened local session, it will open a new session as if you were switching between local users on a workstation. You won't be able to resume your opened apps for example. In fact, X2Go is basically suited for thin clients, yon don't even need to have a graphical local desktop or a GPU on the server side since the desktop is virtual. Might be possible, NFS migh probably add a few latency but I wouldn't recommend using GlusterFS instead, it is far slower due to the voulme beeing mounted through Fuse. I already did many testing on GlusterFS for our internal usage and it is by far slower than NFS. CephFS (file sharing "nfs like" filesystem provided by Ceph on top of it's storage capabilities, as opposed to the "usual" block mode it provides) could be worth trying but I didn't had the opportunity to do some testing by now. Anyway, I think it should be at most comparable to NFS, not really faster. I agree especially in the case of the TCE where we're targeting ThinClients that are generaly quite low on specs (mostly ATOM or celeron based). Anyway, time to open the session is a bit too slow to my taste, I would agree but this is not unbearable. RDP on the other hand is extremely fast at opening the session but if I remember well, it uses a secured channel with encryption (but not through SSH) so, what are they using to connect that fast without compromising security too much ? Re: [X2Go-User] X2Go vs. XRDP
Brian, I don't really understand your point about your thin clients, LTSP images and remote connection to RedHat VMs. From what I can tell, the lower spec thin clients we have are older Wyse celeron based with 1Gb of RAM. My thin client boot from LAN with the TCE-NG setup and simply download a 230MB OS image and run from it diskless. They start the X2Go client in display manager mode and eat about 512MB RAM, OS image included (running apps goes for about 200MB). Since it's direct X2Go connection, there is no local stuff, only remote and these low specs Thin Clients perform as good as the higher specs PCs we converted to Thin Clients and which are 4GB, Core i3/i5 and more ... However both XRDP and X2GO could not provide a good visualization for my current project that has thin clients pulling down LTSP images. The LTSP desktop images are all low resource but we use them as a jumping point to connect to Red Hat VMs. The only connection method I found that could support a decent desktop experience for our users as with X11VNC + XDMCP. I went through xrdp/x2go/NX and even Horizon View and all had either poor performance or in the case of Horizon View were just not really meant for Linux yet (the support is pretty awful). Re: [X2Go-User] X2Go vs. XRDP
Hi Stefan, I went through the same problems and same tests comparing both X2Go to XRDP ... If it is of any help, here are my thinking : XRDP is a good solution, it is efficient and works really well but it has some drawbacks too. First, it lacks all the middleware we find with X2Go, especially the broker, the session management, the TCE settings, ... It is mostly a good and efficient component for remote access but this is raw and even if it is not that complicated to setup, in a complex situation where you need brokerage, session management, AD integration, ... it makes things a bit more complicated. On the performances side, things are not that simple ... XRDP seem to offer a good GLX support with a fast software renderer so even h/w accelerated stuff just work, with limitations due to the remote thing but at least, it works, even h/w accelerated desktops such as Gnome 3, Unity, KDE, ... Not very fast but it works. With less demanding desktops such as MATE or XFCE, it really flies and there a re a few bugs which even disappear such as these : https://github.com/ArcticaProject/nx-libs/issues/337 https://github.com/ArcticaProject/nx-libs/issues/336 https://github.com/ArcticaProject/nx-libs/issues/301 Even applications that are quite slow under X2Go (presently, webkit based applications such as Chrome/Chromium and even Firefox without XRender=True) But playing with some settings, you can get a very usable and snappy solution with all the advantages of X2Go that I already cited. Here is my use case : I use X2Go for a complete TCE setup (thin clients for my company) with about 150 users connecting a farm for 32 servers. Each server is installed with a custom Ubuntu 16.04 server + lightweight MATE desktop. Each TCE boot straights from the network loading a minimalistic Ubuntu 16.04 server + X2Go as display manager conencting to a X2Go session broker. Each session is a full screen desktop with 1920x1080 resolution on a 100MB local LAN network. I configured the session with these settings : * Pack method : 64k-jpeg * Speed : LAN * Resolution : Fullscreen 1920x1080 * Sound : On with Pulseaudio With these settings in this setup, even Chromium is usable, it is still beyond other applications such as LibreOffice, Gimp, the whole desktop itself and many more applications but fast enough for my users to work comfortably. To me, X2Go is a real gain on the overall but I do agree that XRDP is faster on many points but X2Go is just more usable and complete. And last but not least, there is active development by the Arctica team on the NX-Libs (what is the X2Go equivalent of XRDP in fact) and a lot of good things are coming in a near future, I just hope "near" is not too far from now. Some may remember that I posted about slow performance even with Gigabit networking, mostly web browser usage was problematic. After having spent very much time trying to optimise X2Go to make it perform acceptably, I gave up. I then found and tried XRDP, and all my problems are solved. Although XRDP (with xorgxrdp drivers) uses more bandwith than X2Go, it is much more usable in almost all situations. Even ADSL links work ok, but with Gigabit connectivity it really flies (including video). I don't like to advertise for other "products", but this has made such a difference that I could not withhold this information from those who are not satisfied with X2Go. Maybe as a means of making X2Go better, I would encourage X2Go developers to install XRDP on a test server and test and compare its performance to X2Go. I would be surprised if X2Go would perform better - in fact I was surprised how much better XRDP was. Maybe there are things that can be done in X2Go to make it better by looking at how XRDP does things. I really wanted X2Go to work, but somehow it didn't work for me. So I assume that it may be related to other libraries brought in by the driver. I already figured out that I can work around the libGL.so from NVidia, if I add to the environment : export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib64 In this way, the software uses the system's libGL.so, I can see it with ldd /usr/bin/glxinfo Unfortunately, this is not sufficient. With 3.5.99.2 I was seeing core dumps about ever 4th time I tried to open a file with nvi, not seeing that behavior anymore. I don't usually use Firefox on this machine but it is running fine with youtube other than being slow (I'm seeing maybe 3 frames per second, at one time a year or so ago same hardware was doing full 30fps video so something has negatively impacted performance but a lot of other things besides x2go has changed in this time frame). -_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_- Eskimo North Linux Friendly Internet Access, Shell Accounts, and Hosting. Re: [X2Go-User] Compression method guidance
Hi, From my own testing, in a LAN setup, I found these settings to be my best choices : * 16m-jpeg : good overall performances, especially with animated contents or videos at the cost of a small artefacts and blurryness around small texts * 16m-rdp-compressed : good compromise between smoothness and readability * 16m-png-jpeg : great readability, smoothness is good except for animated contents/videos The name format is not named from the bpp but from the bandwidth it consumes. For your use case, with mostly text based apps, I would recommend 2m-png-jpeg, should be good. Is there any guidance available for which compression methods work best in which scenarios? I didn't see anything on the X2Go wiki but it's possible I've overlooked it. I can't even find a description of what all the different compression methods actually are, though I'm guessing that most of them are named in the format bits_per_pixel-image_compression_algorithm. For my own use, I usually use X2Go to run individual applications (not an entire desktop) remotely. These applications are primarily text-based, such as terminal emulators, text editors, and mail clients. The remote machines have upload speeds of about 3 Mbit/s. Would it make sense for me to choose something png-based rather than jpeg-based? 256-png perhaps, since I am not looking at any images other than toolbar icons? Re: [X2Go-User] x2go performance again
Hi, I'm struggling with performances too but mainly with web browser performances. I'm on a LAN and using either 16m-jpeg (a few artifacts giving unpleasing readability on small texts but very speedy and responsive, youtube videos plays just fine but not in fullscreen) or 16m-png-jpeg (no artifact, good overall speed except for animated stuff such as videos) I must say that I'm using it in 1920x1080 resolution in TCE mode. The problem is not X2Go refresh performances but how some softwares interact with the X server. In fact, I'm currently struggling with browsers and I ended with 2 kind of issues : Xrender enabled browsers : Firefox or Epiphany. Refresh is good but FF still tries to use 2D HW accelerated stuff with some css attributes (I discovered filter:alpha was one of them) which is then translated to software and is a CPU hog but, for "normal" workloads, it is the best compromise between features and performances (performances with youtube for example is just great) Epiphany on the other hand is Webkit based and it has a blazingly fast Javascript engine AND render engine which works with Xrender which is not the case for most webkit based browsers. Until now, for the workload where FF is slow (many JS + many CSS), it flies but it has a lot less feature and is somewhat buggy here and there (especially the dev tools are not working in Epiphany 3.18 which is shipped with Ubuntu 16.04 that I use). Webkit based browsers : Chrome/Chromium, Midori and others except Epiphany They are all very fast with JS and CSS but, the whole rendering is damn slow and there is nothing that can be done, I tried to enable xrender and/or disable gl rendering, there was nothing I could do, this is still far too slow to be really usable. On the other hand, every other apps that conforms well with X work like a charm, even heavily gfx based stuff such as Gimp, MyPaint, Libreoffice, Regards, Walid Moghrabi TRAVAUX.COM BAT I - PARC CEZANNE 2 290 AVENUE GALILEE - CS 80403 13591 AIX EN PROVENCE CEDEX 3 - Mail original - De: "Stefan Seidel" <ssei...@vub.de> À: x2go-user@lists.x2go.org Envoyé: Lundi 30 Janvier 2017 10:42:01 Objet: [X2Go-User] x2go performance again Hi, some time ago I inquired about peoples experience with x2go in a LAN environment. I have now built a TCE live system (TFTP-only, no NFS) and a new Jessie server and I am still not very satisfied. I tried almost all available options. Here is the setup: 1GBit/s LAN on both sides Host: AMD 4.4GHz 8-core CPU with 32GB RAM Client: Pentium D 2.8GHz, 1GB RAM, nVidia 6200 with 2 screens@1200x1600 I tested MATE desktop with Firefox 51 (tried XRender on/off) and Chromium 55. I usually set the browser to fill half of the screen, that mean roughly the same number of pixels as a Full-HD (1920x1080) screen. I usually open https://www.heise.de and scroll up and down a bit. nopack: almost the best of it all, responsiveness good, Chrome and Firefox without XRender laggy rfb-hextile/tight: better for small screen updates, worse for large screen updates, scrolling in Firefox with XRender active is *very* smooth rdp: almost identical to rfb adaptive: middle ground, everything is laggy but at least there's always the same amount of lag for small and big screen updates. Unacceptable though because almost all text has JPEG artifacts no matter whether the quality is set to 1, 7 or 9. Graphics like Munin graphs are really ugly. 16m-png: good quality, mostly lag-free except Chrome and Firefox when XRender is off, becomes very unresponsive with lots of screen updates 16m-jpeg: artifacts, speed like adaptive I believe nopack or rfb would give better performance if it was possible to circumvent going through SSH. I have set SSH to use arcfour (this is a trusted, isolated LAN) and performance has been slightly better. Is there any way of making the initial authentication and startup through SSH but then having the NX connection going directly to the client? That would save a lot of processing power! (I'm thinking similar to the "tunnel" feature for sound.) Re: [X2Go-User] USB webcam does not work
Hi Stefan, I definitely volunteer to investigate on the TCE side as I spent a lot of time working on a fully working enterprise setup for X2Go TCE with current stable version because we'll be deploying it to production stage (about 150 users) if it passes the live test period (with a sample of about 15 users). This is us who paid for making sound work with TCE and I'm very please with it, it is working extremely well, even videos are very enjoyable (100Mbps LAN must I precise) even though there is no such thing as video streaming or telekinesis/mteleplayer stuff in use. I saw there were plenty of new things that were moving in the heuler repo regarding TCE which broke most of my setup and since it is not in the stable repo, I didn't want to base my POC on this but maybe you can give me more informations on what's new with this release and maybe an ETA on when this would move to the stable repo ... I would really like to help in that matter, I'm fully concerned with this and I think my setup would interest many people since I'm using AD integration, auto mount of users shares, load balancing, session brokers, PXE boot, session preconfiguration, platform provisionning with Salt, ... Well, a real case scenario with many users as target. I'd be happy to test whatever you like me to test and even document and/or write tutorials. Keep me posted. Best regards. In my opinion, it is a lot more flexible and you could try to run a local desktop on the TC, with the Skype client or a Browser (there's a Skype4Web beta that supports video calls, as I've been told) as part of the image. Remote applications would be pulled in via Published Application Mode instead of delivering a full desktop. This is an area where we could also use some volunteer manpower or people forking over some cash for paid-for development tasks, but at least the groundwork is there - so even if you don't have the skills to get it set up yourself, it should be way cheaper than adding USB support to X2Go. Re: [X2Go-User] Enable sound on x2go tce
Hi Olaf, I'm completely sure you can make your USB Headset work in TCE mode since it only rely on Pulseaudio which is tunneled from the client to the server, I already use this and sound and microphone are working perfect. Webcam is a much more complicated issue since the TCE kernel will certainly recognize your USB webcam but it won't transport the video stream to the server the way Pulseaudio does with sound. Maybe there is a way but this is far beyond my skills regarding X2Go. Not sure if you really need video with Skype but for sure, audio calls will work. I managed to fix about every bits here and there but there is still one important part that I can't get to fix which is managing audio applications to work in TCE mode. To be clear, what I call "TCE mode" is pxe booting an diskless station with x2gothinclient (per the doc setup with default settings, Debian wheezy based with heuler x2go client) When I open a X2Go session with a local x2go client on my Ubuntu laptop (or even with x2goclient under windows), no problem, I have sound with PulseAudio fully working, I can play videos on youtube, hear MP3s with totem or any other audio application. Running the same session with a TCE client works great until I want to hear a sound ... youtube videos are hanging with no sound, playing MP3s don't even start. Anything related to PulseAudio seems broken in TCE mode and this is very annoying to me because we'd like to deploy TCEs in my company to replace about 150 Windows PCs but this is for a call center so if audio is not working, this is a no go. I'm pretty sure this can be fixed with some PulseAudio configuration tuning but I must admit that I'm totally confused by PA and I don't understand a bit of the beast so any help would be gladly welcomed ! Re: [X2Go-User] Web browser performance over X2Go
Also encountered that (and even stranger things related to video playing with Youtube for example but not limited to it ...). Did you try to disable hardware acceleration and smooth scrolling in the advanced preferences ? I did and it gaves me better results. I did not think to restart the browser when I tried to toggle that setting. This is a great improvement! Too bad they are deprecating this feature. The video you shared in the link demonstrates exactly my experience. I hope the FF team decides to continue supporting this legacy mode. Thanks again for sharing this. Re: [X2Go-User] Launching "gedit" crashes X2go session
I had something similar with Netbeans, apparently, this was calling for 3D hardware compositing functions which is not supported by nxlibs so the X server crashed and so did the session too. I can't remember in which logs I saw this however ... I managed to stabilize Netbeans under X2Go by switching to a less demanding theme with no hardware acceleration needed. Re: [X2Go-User] X2Go Seamless Mode
You can even use the "Published Applications" mode which lets you present any application you want to your users (.desktop apps that are inside the /etc/x2go/applications folder), every application will have its own window seamlessly integrated on the user desktop. Your users will have a tray icon from which they'll have some sort of Start menu to launch all those apps. In the session preferences, set the session type to “Single application” and enter the command to run that application (e.g. xterm) in the “Command” field behind. Like this X2Go Client will run in seamless mode, showing only the XTerm window integrated into your Windows Desktop. I will like to use X2Go in "seamless" mode ... meaning that if I start a single application, say xterm, on Ubuntu then I want only single xterm window to show up on my MSwin7 computer. Is that possible? X2Go website says it is a Remote Desktop program, but wikipedia says that you have seamless mode and your client also seam to allow it to attach to single application. If somebody can clarify upfront if this is possible or not ... it will save me a lot of time and effort. Thanks in advance!
