Re: EVoC question

2014-06-18 Thread Matt Dew
Hi Poe,
  Thank you for the interest.

Have you read X.org wiki page for EVoC[1]?

What you need to do is to write a proposal, including a timeline
(according to your vacation schedule) and send it to the relevant
mailing lists (please CC: bo...@foundation.x.org).

You will very likely receive feedback from the community asking you to
make some changes and more specifically define your proposal in some areas.

Please then try to find a mentor for the project and the board will
discuss and vote whether to accept your proposal or not.

Please ask us for more details if you need more information on
particular steps.

 Hi Eric,
Yes, please, if it's not too much trouble. Is it for .15.1 or .14.6?

It's one patch. Just cherry-pick it and avoid the round trip?

Ah yes. That's fine.

 Hi Eric,
1.15.1 or 1.14.6 ?

At least 1.15.1. It fixes (works around?) a really annoying
 GPU-hanging problem on Haswell.

 Hi Matt,

This patch fixes a bug where applications using GLX would get a random
Visual/FBConfig, which in many cases ended up being 8x multisampled or
something ridiculous. In particular, I'm seeing a lot of corruption
and some GPU hangs with KWin when multisampled (and it never ought to
be), so landing this should fix a lot of users' desktops.

I tested by running KDE on the new X server and checking that KWin chose
 sane configs.

 Thanks!

Hi Ken,
This looks like the same thing that Eric A and Matt T were asking

Hi Maarten,
The Xorg calendar shows this Thursday, 12/12, as the nominal release
date. I haven't gotten any more pull requests, cherry-pick requests or
new bug reports for -rc1, so I didn't release an -rc2.

If processing is slow, the idle time may advance past the lower bracket

never schedule a wakeup to handle the event, causing us to randomly miss
 events.

Ran tests with a neg transition trigger on 5ms with 200 repeats of the test
and it succeeded. Anything below that gets a bit tricky to make sure the
server sees the same idle time as the client usleeps for.

Hash: SHA1

All,
Here's 1.14.4-rc1. Please beat on it.

Major highlight:
  CVE-2013-4396 -
https://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/detail?vulnId=CVE-2013-4396

I pulled and cherry-picked these late in the 6-week cycle.

Considering that the CVE-2013-4396 is in here, I'm extending this
another week. I want to get this out for the security patch, but I
want a little testing on it. So, if there are no issues between now
and next Thursday, I will release it then.

Alan Coopersmith (2):
  Avoid use-after-free in dix/dixfonts.c: doImageText()
[CVE-2013-4396]
Allow disabling XFree86-DGA, DRI, VidModeExtension extensions

Egbert Eich (1):
DIX/Xi: Pass correct client to CheckDeviceGrabAndHintWindow()

Julien Cristau (3):
  test: include dix-config.h in hashtabletest.c
xfree86: improve check for posix saved ids
dix: add missing include for DeleteWindowFromAnySelections

Matt Dew (1):
Bump version from 1.14.3 to 1.14.3.901.

Peter Hutterer (14):
test: fix the gcc diagnostics pragma
dix: check for grab type before checking XI2 mask
Xi: allow for XIAllowEvent requests larger than XI 2.2 size
(#68554)
dix: only allow button and key events to freeze a sync'd pointer
include: change grabtypes to start at 1
dix: don't attempt to deliver an event for a different grabtype
dix: only deliver for the current grab type
  sync: compress two if statements
sync: always call BracketValues when recalculating upper/lower
brackets
sync: supply the counter from IdleTimeBlockHandler
dix: provide accessor methods for the last device event time
sync: if the idle time was reset, force alarms to trigger (#70476)
sync: always set the brackets (#59644)
sync: split updating and triggering a counter up

 Hi all,
Today was the nominal 1.14.4-rc2 release. I've gotten no
nominations, pull or cherry-pick requests since 1.14.3 was released.

1.14.4 should include the recent CVE fix, once keith pulls it into
 master.

Okay - it's there now, so I'd like to nominate these two commits to be
cherry-picked into 1.14.4 (I've not had a chance to do this myself to
 test them though):

Hi Tormod,
I only take cherry-picks or pulls. Not individual patches.

Keith,
Thoughts on applying that to master?

I don't want a nasty loop where fixing one things breaks another.

From the names of the directory that contains the files
affected by the inclusion of hurd.h, I can't imagine how that
patch would affect a build on linux. Still, a 32-year career in
IT taught me to expect the unexpected, so I cloned the 1.14
branch, applied that patch (by hand - it's been mangled by
 someone's mailer) and did a simple autogen.sh / configure /
make. As expected, the build completed successfully.

The other patch, which Pino said affected other unix systems,
is not included in the mail that arrived here, so, obviously, I
 haven't built with that applied.

 Why I didn't do this simple thing yesterday, I can't explain! I
got this missing patch from the xorg-devel mail archive and
applied it to the 1.14 branch. A build finished finished
successfully, so from here, the patches look good.

Attached there are two patches, which apply fine in both

Hi Julien, You know, when one person's bugfix causes a bug for
another person. Then fixing that bug causes another bug, and so
on. Very unlikely I know, but ...

 Hi Matt,

You're not going to ask every single bug reporter ever to test
every single patch that comes in, though, so I'm wondering what's
 special about this one...

Hi Julien,

Oh heck no.Just that the gcc 4.8 patch was a bit of a pain and
that final week's hold up was for it. Then only a few days later
there was another patch for gcc 4.8. I got paranoid. It's was a
special case, and unnecessary as it turns out.

Thanks Peter.
Any idea when that pull request will be? xserver 1.14.3 has been a
mess schedule wise. I'd like to get it out so I can get back onto a
6-week schedule again but I'd like to get this one in .3 instead of
waiting for .4 just so we can be done with it.

If that pull request'll be this week, I'll wait until next Thursday
before releasing 1.13.4 otherwise I'll just pop out 1.13.4 tomorrow.

Unless anyone has objections to this plan,

You can, but as this code is also broken on master, it's best to have it
committed to master and then cherry-picked to the stable branch.

I'll merge it to master in a day or so (to give other people time to see
it and potentially review it).

I see that 1.14.2 has been released without any of the above happening.
That's no big deal, but Matt's statement in the release notice that
this release doesn't work with gcc 4.8-snapshot is a bit misleading. As
I reported, it won't *build* with gcc-4.8 snapshot. Once my patch is
applied, it builds fine and, from my experience over the last two weeks,
it works fine too.

Hi Chris,
I didn't feel there was enough time to properly bake that patch so I
didn't include it in 1.14.2.

It wasn't my intent to be misleading but to me, in this regard, 'not
building' is the same as 'doesn't work'.

[ANNOUNCE] xorg-server 1.14.2

2013-06-25 Thread Matt Dew
All,
My apologies for the couple day delay. The release was scheduled
for last Thursday but a regression was found.

Emmanuel Benisty reported that one of the commits caused a regression
problem. I reverted that commit and allowed a couple days for some
additional testing.

Chris Clayton has reported that this release doesn't work with gcc 4.8-snapshot.

spec in a third. This was tedious work to cross-reference and
confirm or
 refute each report [...]

which reminded me that huge thanks are also due to Matt Gaetan and
everyone
else who helped getting our documentation modernized.

As tedious as this work was, it was far better than if we had to page
through
paper manuals or the old postscript dumps from the old nroff specs -
having
html specs online with links to jump directly to the right call
encoding or
description made it much faster to see which values could be large
enough to
cause overflows, or what values we should be checking to limit the
values to.

So once again, thanks for making our specs more usable!

A tribute to your leadership. Not only you got the job done, but you go
it done by volunteers!

Agreed!

We are seeking nominations for candidates for election to the X.Org
Foundation Board of Directors. All X.Org Foundation members are
eligible for election to the board.

Nominations for the 2012 election are now open and will remain open
until 23.59 GMT on 10 March 2013.

The Board consists of directors elected from the membership. Each
year, an election is held to bring the total number of directors to
eight. The four members receiving the highest vote totals will serve
as directors for two year terms.

The directors who received two year terms starting in 2011 were
Matthias Hopf, Keith Packard, Matt Dew, and Alex Deucher. They
will continue to serve until their term ends in 2013. Current
directors whose term expires in 2012 are Eric Anholt, Alan Coopersmith,
Stuart Kreitman, and Bart Massey.

A director is expected to participate in the bi-weekly IRC meeting to
discuss current business and to attend the annual meeting of the X.Org
Foundation, which will be held at a location determined in advance by
the Board of Directors.

A member may nominate themselves or any other member they feel is
qualified. Nominations should be sent to the Election Committee at
elections at x.org.

Nominees shall be required to be current members of the X.Org
Foundation, and submit a personal statement of up to 200 words that
will be provided to prospective voters. The collected statements,
along with the statement of contribution to the X.Org Foundation in
the members account page on http://members.x.org, will be made
available to all voters to help them make their voting decisions.

Nominations, membership applications or renewals and completed
personal statements must be received no later than 23.59 GMT on 10 March
2013.

The slate of candidates will be published 11 March
2013 and candidate QA will begin then. The deadline for Xorg
membership applications and renewals is 15 March 2011.

Re: xserver release tracker bugs

We've never been good about fixing all the bugs on the release tracker,

most open bugs are still stuck under the 1.12 1.13 trackers:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/showdependencytree.cgi?id=xserver-1.14hide_resolved=1

Let´s have a look at one of those bugs:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=58174

Problem: Terminating the xorg server leaves screen, keyboard and mouse
blocked.

So there is a serious problem with a known, reviewed and tested fix that
is totally ignored for more than six weeks.

BTW: I really wonder how many people regularly run/test xorg master ...

Yeah I even included it in a pull request that was ignored for ages,
and when some
bits got applied the rest is still being ignored.

At this point I'd like to suggest something is broken and we go back
to the mesa style
system for master, where anyone can commit once we have an R-b from the list

All in favour say aye?

Please forgive me if this is something I should have been on top of.
I'm the xserver stable branch maintainer. Have I been dropping the ball
here? I've been paying more attention to emails from people than
following the 1.13 bug tracker,
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44202.

Have I missed something? Should I be more active in poking people on
bugs? Other?

A quick glance at xts showed interesting results. Some tests passing,
some tests failing,
some tests even segfaulting the xserver. The following XI/* tests
belong to the last category:

Sweet!

  ChangeDeviceControl
  DeviceBell
  SetDeviceMode
  SetDeviceValuators
  XGetDeviceControl

Anybody interested in more detailed reports?

This is exactly what we have tests for. :)

Do the backtraces look like it's crashing in the same place for each
one? Please file a separate bug against the X server for each unique
backtrace.

Oh, and thanks for testing!

Matt, do you want to block 1.13 for these?

I'm interested in more detailed information before deciding one way or
another.

I also love it when testing turns up bugs! :)

Nominations for X.Org Foundation Board of Directors are OPEN (resend)

2013-02-21 Thread Matt Dew
(I sent this to announce, xorg and xorg-devel lists but forgot the
members list. To account for this mistake, the nomination window is
being extended to March 10. The email below is the same as previously,
with the dates adjusted.)
