(Credit: BLAST collaboration) ScienceDaily (May 28, 2009) — People have always wondered where we, our Earth, our galaxy, come from. A group of scientist has now driven that quest one step further and taken a peak at how the stars that gave rise to most of the material found on our universe formed over cosmic history. University of Miami professor of physics in the College of Arts and Sciences, Joshua Gundersen is part of an international research team that built an innovative new telescope called BLAST (Balloon-borne Large-Aperture Sub-millimeter Telescope) and launched it to the edge of the atmosphere, where it discovered previously unidentified dust-obscured, star-forming galaxies that could help illuminate the origins of the universe. BLAST has given us a unique picture into the development of other galaxies and the earliest stages of star formation of our own Milky Way, Gundersen explains. The light we're getting from these submillimeter galaxies is from a time when they were first forming. In a sense, it's like getting a baby picture. The data analyzed over the past two years reveals close to a thousand of these starburst galaxies that lie five to ten billion light years from Earth, produce stars at an incredible rate, and hide about half of the starlight in the cosmos. The findings were recently published in the journal Nature. Until BLAST came along, most of the galaxies in the universe have been detected at optical wavelengths visible to the naked eye. The starburst galaxies identified by Gundersen and his colleagues however are a new class of galaxies, enshrouded by dust that absorbs most of their starlight and then re-emits it at far-infrared wavelengths. During an 11-day flight in 2006, the telescope, while tethered to a balloon 120,000 feet above Antarctica, took measurements in three different submillimeter wavelengths that are nearly impossible to observe from the ground. By going to balloon altitudes, we got a nice, crystal-clear picture of these things, Gundersen said. It is these far-infrared and submillimeter wavelengths that we're able to detect with BLAST, Gundersen explains. Graduate student Nick Thomas spent seven weeks at the McMurdo scientific research station in Antarctica, where he helped assemble the device and worked on some of its electronic systems. Having worked in a project of this magnitude and in the company of a superb group of scientists has been one of the highlights of my career thus far, said Thomas. Collaborating on this project has been an incredible learning experience both at the personal and the professional level. The data from BLAST is being combined with information from other NASA observatories like the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory, helping astronomers and cosmologists to better understand the evolutionary history of these starburst galaxies and how they may be associated with larger-scale structures in the universe. The work on BLAST has helped pave the wave for one of the European Space Agency's most ambitious missions to study the cosmos: The Herschel telescope, which launched into orbit earlier this month from a space center in French Guiana. Herschel will peer into the dustiest and earliest stages of planet, star, and galaxy growth, using the same detector system that flew aboard BLAST. The idea with BLAST was that we could test a new detector system on a much cheaper, faster platform, namely a balloon payload, Gundersen says. Herschel has an identical detector system to BLAST, along with other important instruments. It will do a lot more than BLAST did, but we achieved some of the important goals first. Subscribe and get 4 free issues. * For similar stories, visit the Exploring Mars and Astrobiology Topic Guides HAVE Mars landers been destroying signs of life? Instead of identifying chemicals that could point to life, NASA's robot explorers may have been toasting them by mistake. In 1976, many people's hopes of finding life on Mars collapsed when the twin Viking landers failed to detect even minute quantities of organic compounds - the complex, carbon-containing molecules that are central to life as we know it. It contributed, in my opinion, to the fact that there were no additional [US lander] missions to Mars for 20 years, says Jeff Moore of NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California. The result also created a puzzle. Even if Mars has never had life, comets and asteroids that have struck the planet should have scattered at least some organic molecules - though not produced by life - over its surface. Some have suggested that organics were cleansed from the surface by naturally occurring, highly reactive chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide. Then last year, NASA's Phoenix lander, which also failed to detect organics on Mars, stumbled on something in the Martian soil that may have, in effect, been hiding the organics: a class of chemicals called perchlorates. At low temperatures, perchlorates are relatively harmless. But when heated to hundreds of degrees Celsius they release a lot of oxygen, which tends to cause any nearby combustible material to burn. For that very reason, perchlorates are used in rocket propulsion. The Phoenix and Viking landers looked for organic molecules by heating soil samples to similarly high temperatures to evaporate them and analyse them in gas form. When Douglas Ming of NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, and colleagues tried heating organics and perchlorates like this on Earth, the resulting combustion left no trace of organics behind. Ming's team presented their results at the recent Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Houston. Iron oxides have also been suspected of interfering with the detection of organics, but perchlorates are probably far more effective, says Chris McKay of Ames. Even if organics make up a few parts per thousand of the soil, Viking or Phoenix could have missed them, he adds, so it is too soon to conclude that these materials are not there. We haven't looked the right way, he says. Jeffrey Bada of the University of California, San Diego, agrees that a new approach is needed. He is leading work on a new instrument called Urey for the European Space Agency's ExoMars rover, due to launch in 2016, which will be able to detect organic material at concentrations as low as a few parts per trillion. The good news is that, although Urey heats its samples, it does so in water, so the organics cannot burn up. Mystery of the missing salt Organic chemicals are not the only substance that we may have missed on the Red Planet (see above). We should have seen carbonate salts littering the surface. Weathering breaks down basalt, the dominant rock in the planet's crust, into a clay plus positive ions. These ions should react with carbon dioxide in the Martian atmosphere to form carbonate salts, explains Ralph Milliken at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Orbiters have spotted clay on Mars but few carbonates or other salts. We shouldn't assume that they aren't there, however, Milliken says. Milliken and his colleagues have calculated that weathered Mars basalt should produce equal amounts of clay and salt. Thus in the planet's southern highlands, where thousands of clay deposits have been identified, there should be at least as much salt (Geophysical Research Letters, DOI: 10.1029/2009gl038558). Chemistry has shown that you can't draw conclusions from observations alone, because you are still missing pieces of the puzzle, says Milliken. Some argue that the lack of known carbonate salt deposits points to a different atmospheric composition in the past, but Milliken says we should study the rocks directly before making any conclusions. [zamanku] Reuters : Mars may have been both cold and wet
Mars may have been both cold and wet Wed May 20, 2009 1:27pm EDT LONDON (Reuters) - Mars may have once been both cold and wet, researchers said Wednesday, suggesting a freezing Martian landscape could still have produced water needed to sustain life. There has been debate over the issue because with some researchers believing water likely formed many features of the planet's landscape and others pointing to evidence indicating that early Mars was cold with temperatures well below the freezing point of water. Using a computer model, Alberto Fairen of Universidad Autonoma in Madrid and colleagues showed that both could have been possible because fluids containing dissolved minerals would have remained liquid at temperatures well below 273 degrees Kelvin -- the freezing point of pure water. Our results are compatible with Mars lander and orbiter data and with climate modeling, and suggest a cold and wet early Mars, they wrote in the journal Nature. The presence of water on Mars is a hot topic for scientists. They have presented strong evidence of huge deposits of frozen water at the Martian poles and point to geological features that indicate large bodies of water have flowed on the planet's surface in the distant past. Other scientists have said images and computer simulations strongly suggest a landslide of sand and gravel are more likely explanations for the bright deposits in gullies that have been proposed as strong evidence of water flow. Water is a key to the question of whether life, even in the form of microbes, ever existed on Mars. On Earth, all known forms of life require water. Feiren and colleagues, including scientists from NASA's Ames Research Center in California, chose compositions based on weathered basalts for the Martian fluids in their model to match the chemical compositions of rock found at Mars landing sites. This analysis showed that a number of minerals could have lowered the melting point of water in a frozen Martian environment and help explain the early Mars climate paradox, they said. The stability against freezing of Martian fluids can explain saline water activity on the surface of Mars at mean global temperatures well below 273 Kelvin, they wrote. [zamanku] BBC NEWS: Scientists hail stunning fossil
Scientists hail stunning fossil By Christine McGourty Science correspondent, BBC News The beautifully preserved remains of a 47-million-year-old, lemur-like creature have been unveiled in the US. The preservation is so good, it is possible to see the outline of its fur and even traces of its last meal. The fossil, nicknamed Ida, is claimed to be a missing link between today's higher primates - monkeys, apes and humans - and more distant relatives. But some independent experts, awaiting an opportunity to see the new fossil, are sceptical of the claim. And they have been critical of the hype surrounding the presentation of Ida. The fossil was launched amid great fanfare at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, by the city's mayor. Although details of the fossil have only just been published in a scientific journal - PLoS One - there is already a TV documentary and book tie-in. “ She belongs to the group from which higher primates and human beings developed but my impression is she is not on the direct line ” Dr Jens Franzen Ida was discovered in the 1980s in a fossil treasure-trove called Messel Pit, near Darmstadt in Germany. For much of the intervening period, it has been in a private collection. The investigation of the fossil's significance was led by Jorn Hurum of the Natural History Museum in Oslo, Norway. He said the fossil creature was the closest thing we can get to a direct ancestor and described the discovery as a dream come true. The female animal lived during an epoch in Earth history known as the Eocene, which was crucial for the development of early primates - and at first glance, Ida resembles a lemur. But the creature lacks primitive features such as a so-called toothcomb, a specialised feature in which the lower incisor and canine teeth are elongated, crowded together and projecting forward. She also lacks a special claw used for grooming. The team concluded that she was not simply another lemur, but a new species. They have called her Darwinius masillae , to celebrate her place of origin and the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Darwin. Dr Jens Franzen, an expert on the Messel Pit and a member of the team, described Ida as like the Eighth Wonder of the World, because of the extraordinary completeness of the skeleton. It was information palaeontologists can normally only dream of, he said. In addition, Ida bears a close resemblance to ourselves he said, with nails instead of claws, a grasping hand and an opposable thumb - like humans and some other primates. But he said some aspects of the teeth indicate she is not a direct ancestor - more of an aunt than a grandmother. She belongs to the group from which higher primates and human beings developed but my impression is she is not on the direct line. Independent experts are keen to see the new fossil but somewhat sceptical of any claim that it could be a missing link. Dr Henry Gee, a senior editor at the journal Nature, said the term itself was misleading and that the scientific community would need to evaluate its significance. It's extremely nice to have a new find and it will be well-studied, he said. But he added that it was not likely to be in the same league as major discoveries such as Flores man or feathered dinosaurs. Dr Chris Beard, curator of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and author of The Hunt for the Dawn Monkey, said he was awestruck by the publicity machine surrounding the new fossil. He argued that it could damage the popularisation of science if the creature was not all that it was hyped up to be. Dr Beard has not yet seen scientific details of the find but said that it would be very nice to have a beautiful new fossil from the Eocene and that Ida would be a welcome new addition to the world of early primates. But he added: I would be absolutely dumbfounded if it turns out to be a potential ancestor to humans. In the PLoS paper itself, the scientists do not actually claim the specimen represents a direct ancestor to us. But Dr Hurum believes that is exactly what Ida is. He told BBC News that the key to proving this lay in the detail of the foot. The shape of a bone in the foot called the talus looks almost anthropoid. He said the team was now planning a 3D reconstruction of the foot which would prove this. We're not finished with this specimen yet, said Dr Hurum. There will be plenty more papers coming out. in the talus bone links Ida to us. The bone has the same shape as in humans today. Only the human talus is obviously bigger. X-rays and CT scanning reveal Ida to be about nine months old when she died, and provide clues to her diet – which included berries and plants. Furthermore the lack of a bacculum (penis bone) means that the fossil was definitely female. X-rays reveal that a broken wrist may have contributed to Ida’s death – her left wrist was healing from a bad fracture. The scientists believe she was overcome by carbon dioxide gas whilst from drinking from the Messel lake: the still waters of the lake were often covered by a low lying blanket of the gas as a result of the volcanic forces that formed the lake and which were still active. Hampered by her broken wrist, Ida slipped into unconsciousness, was washed into the lake, and sunk to the bottom, where the unique conditions preserved her for 47 million years. The findings of the two-year study will be revealed exclusively by Atlantic Productions in a special documentary film, The Link, to be screened by History on Monday May 25th, 2009 at 9pm ET/PT and BBC One in the UK Tuesday May 26th, 2009 at 9pm BST. It will also be broadcast on ZDF, NRK and around the world. A major book, The Link, will be published by Little Brown and Company, a division of Hachette Book Group, on Wednesday May 20th. An interactive, content-rich website about Ida has been launched at http://www.revealingthelink.com. This little creature is going to show us our connection with all the rest of the mammals, said renowned broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough. The link they would have said until now is missing ... it is no longer missing. Journal reference: 1. Franzen JL, Gingerich PD, Habersetzer J, Hurum JH, von Koenigswald W, et al. [zamanku] AFP: Hawking bets CERN mega-machine won't find 'God's Particle'
Hawking bets CERN mega-machine won't find 'God's Particle' Sep 9, 2008 LONDON (AFP) — Renowned British astrophysicist Stephen Hawking has bet 100 dollars (70 euros) that a mega-experiment this week will not find an elusive particle seen as a holy grail of cosmic science, he said Tuesday. In the most complex scientific experiment ever undertaken, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be switched on Wednesday, accelerating sub-atomic particles to nearly the speed of light before smashing them together. The LHC will increase the energy at which we can study particle interactions by a factor of four. According to present thinking, this should be enough to discover the Higgs particle, Hawking told BBC radio. I think it will be much more exciting if we don't find the Higgs. That will show something is wrong, and we need to think again. I have a bet of 100 dollars that we won't find the Higgs, added Hawking, whose books including A Brief History of Time have sought to popularise study of stellar physics. On Wednesday the first protons will be injected into a 27-kilometre (16.9-mile) ring-shaped tunnel, straddling the Swiss-French border at the headquarters of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN). Physicists have long puzzled over how particles acquire mass. In 1964, a British physicist, Peter Higgs, came up with this idea: there must exist a background field that would act rather like treacle. Some scientists were however more optimistic. Hubert Reeves, the French astrophysician, told the Swiss daily Le Matin that the invention could bring unexpected results that would change the world of particle physics forever. This machine will probably bring unexpected results that could turn particle physics on its head, Reeves said. It's a really impressive tool. It can go as deep underground as the length of a cathedral, he said. Particles passing through it would acquire mass by being dragged through a mediator, which theoreticians dubbed the Higgs Boson. The standard quip about the Higgs is that it is the God Particle -- it is everywhere but remains frustratingly elusive. While questioning the likelihood of finding Higgs Bosons, Hawking said the experiment could discover superpartners, particles that would be supersymmetric partners to particles already known about. Their existence would be a key confirmation of string theory, and they could make up the mysterious dark matter that holds galaxies together, he told the BBC. Whatever the LHC finds, or fails to find, the results will tell us a lot about the structure of the universe, he added. Hawking, the 66-year-old Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, was diagnosed with the muscle-wasting motor neuron disease at the age of 22. He is in a wheelchair and speaks with the aid of a computer and voice synthesiser. Copyright © 2009 AFP. All rights reserved. [zamanku] The Age: The hunt for 'God's particle'
Print this article | Close this window The hunt for 'God's particle' James Randerson, Guardian June 2, 2008 Advertisement A huge atom-smasher is set to unlock the secret of the origin of the universe. IT IS one of the most puzzling pieces in physicists' understanding of the universe - the Higgs bosun, the so-called missing piece. But the scientist behind the so-called God particle believes the confirmation of his prediction is imminent. Peter Higgs, emeritus professor of physics at the University of Edinburgh, says he is 90% confident that an atom-smashing machine nearing completion in Switzerland will prove that the particle exists. The professor is hoping this will happen before his 80th birthday in May next year. If that mass prediction is right, it will be in the data very quickly, he says. But there's a lot of analysis of the data to be done before you announce it, and that's what takes the time. Many physicists believe the confirmation could win Higgs a Nobel prize, along with two other physicists who have made significant advances in the same field. The big hope for finding the Higgs boson - the particle that confers mass on the rest of matter - is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Switzerland, a particle physics laboratory. By crunching together particles at high speed and energy, the machine is designed to recreate conditions that have not existed since just after the Big Bang. This is a Genesis machine, theoretical physicist Professor Michio Kaku of City University in New York, says. This machine will help us to unlock the secret of the origin of the universe. Finding the Higgs boson would add significantly to physicists' understanding of how matter is put together, the so-called standard model. But Higgs says the LHC is about much more than just the God particle (not his phrase, and one which he says embarrasses him). The Higgs boson discovery is only one part of the program. There is vastly more for the machine to do. The collider consists of two concentric underground rings, 27kilometres in circumference spanning the border between France and Switzerland. Using powerful superconducting magnets, it will accelerate packets of particles to within a whisker of the speed of light. When these collide head-on they generate enough energy to rip matter apart. By collecting the subatomic shrapnel, the physicists can infer what that matter was composed of. Engineers will seal off the particle accelerator and cool it to -271.3degrees - the low temperature is required for the powerful magnets to work. They hope to switch on the first beam in a few weeks and the first collisions should happen by the end of the year. It will probably be 12 months before the LHC is at full power. That subatomic fireball will actually reproduce the conditions that would have existed about a millionth of a second after the Big Bang, says Dr David Evans, of the University of Birmingham, England, who is working on one of the experiments. [zamanku] The ndepmendent: World's most ancient race traced in DNA study
World's most ancient race traced in DNA study By Steve Connor, Science Editor Friday, 1 May 2009 The San people of southern Africa, who have lived as hunter-gatherers for thousands of years, are likely to be the oldest population of humans on Earth, according to the biggest and most detailed analysis of African DNA. The San, also known as bushmen, are directly descended from the original population of early human ancestors who gave rise to all other groups of Africans and, eventually, to the people who left the continent to populate other parts of the world. A study of 121 distinct populations of modern-day Africans has found that they are all descended from 14 ancestral populations and that the differences and similarities of their genes closely follows the differences and similarities of their spoken languages. The scientists analysed the genetic variation within the DNA of more than 3,000 Africans and found that the San were among the most genetically diverse group, indicating that they are probably the oldest continuous population of humans on the continent – and on Earth. The study, published in the journal Science, took 10 years of research involving trips to some of the most remote and dangerous parts of Africa to collect blood samples. The project found modern Africans had the most diverse DNA of all racial groups in the world, confirming the idea that Africa is the birthplace of humanity, said Sarah Tishkoff of the University of Pennsylvania. The scientists also found genetic markers in the DNA of the present-day inhabitants of East Africa living near to the Red Sea, which indicated that they belonged to the same ancestral group who migrated out of Africa to populate Asia and the rest of the world. West Africans speaking the Niger-Kordofanian language were found to share many genetic traits with African-Americans, indicating they were the ancestors of most of the slaves sent to the New World. One of the main findings to emerge was the genetic similarity between groups who shared similar languages despite living many thousands of miles from one another. The Sandawe and Hadza of Tanzania shared common ancestors with the Khoisan speakers of southern Africa: all three groups speak click languages.

Edan. BBC NEWS Experts unveil African gene study A group of scientists have unveiled what they say is the most comprehensive study ever of African genes. Published following a decade of study, the researchers say their findings give new insight into the origins of humans. The first humans probably evolved near the South Africa-Namibia border before migrating north, the study says. Published in the US journal Science, it aims to teach Africans on population history and aid research into why diseases hit particular groups. The scientists examined genetic material from 121 African populations, as well as four African-American populations and 60 non-African populations. 'Benefit Africans' The results provided novel insights about levels and patterns of genetic diversity in Africa, a region that has been under-represented in human genetic studies, said Sarah Tishkoff, a geneticist from the University of Pennsylvania. The first humans most likely evolved near the South Africa-Namibia border, the team said, and migrated north out of the continent via the Red Sea. Researchers had identified 14 ancestral population clusters that correlated with ethnicity and shared cultural and/or linguistic properties, they said. They found high levels of mixed ancestry in most populations, as well as evidence showing common ancestry in geographically diverse groups. The study also looked at African-American populations, finding that almost three-quarters could trace their ancestry to West Africa. This knowledge could help experts better understand why certain diseases impact on African-American populations, researchers said. Dr Tishkoff said that the goal was to benefit Africans, both by learning more about their population history and by setting the stage for future genetic studies, including studies of genetic and environmental risk factors for disease and drug response. to improve upon the techniques he had used in analyzing both the T. rex specimen and specimens from bones of other prehistoric animals including a 300,000-year-old mammoth and mastodon. At the beginning of the study, Asara explains, his lab used an ion trap mass spectrometer, which captures and holds peptides through time so that after the collected peptides are measured for mass they are isolated and fragmented to reveal their amino acid sequence. Then, while the study was in progress, his lab acquired a high-resolution and highly mass-accurate Orbitrap XL mass spectrometer, which was used during the second half of the analysis. Because it is capable of sub 2 ppm mass accuracy, the Orbitrap allowed us to make more confident sequence calls than we did in the T. rex study, Asara explains. For example, the mass difference between a hydroxyproline amino acid residue [which is plentiful in collagen] and a leucine or isoleucine residue is only 0.0364 Da. Although this very small measurement proved to be an obstacle for the ion trap, it was not a problem for the Orbitrap. Material for mass spectrometry sequence analysis was also sent to the lab of William Lane at Harvard University and mass spectrometry sequence data were independently verified by John Cottrell, PhD, at Matrix Science in London, UK. The end result was a total of eight collagen peptides and 149 amino acids from four different samples, sequences that held up when multiple validation steps were performed, including comparisons with synthetic peptides using a spectral comparison algorithm and statistical evaluation. In the final portion of the study, coauthor Chris Organ, PhD, a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University, conducted a rigorous phylogenetic analysis of the identified sequences to determine B. canadensis' place within the evolutionary tree of animals. The B. canadensis collagen sequence data were compared to a database of collagen sequence data from 21 species of living animals and sequences from two other fossils, mastodon and T. rex. The results placed B. canadensis on the same family-tree branch with T. rex, in the same group as chicken and ostrich, and more distantly, to alligator and lizard. The phylogenetic analysis yielded clear results, but the placement of the extinct dinosaurs still rests on a limited amount of sequence data, notes Organ. There is not enough sequence data to correctly parse out the relationships within Dinosauria [the group containing B. canadensis, T. rex and the two birds] but the group as a whole is well supported by the analysis, which is consistent with studies based on morphology. Ultimately, notes Asara, We were able to achieve these results, in part, because the mass spectrometry systems that our lab has set up for cancer research are capable of a similar concentration range – low to sub femtomole -- needed for ancient fossil protein sequencing. We hope to meet with similar success when it comes to identifying novel signaling proteins from cancerous tissues. This study was funded, in part, through grants from the National Science Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Merck Postdoctoral Science Research Fellowship, the National Institutes of Health and the Taplin Funds for Discovery, Harvard Medical School. [zamanku] JP: Depok mayor sued for annulling church permit
Langkah yang bagus... Dan akan kita lihat apakah juciary di Indonesia itu tahu apa yang namanya kebebasan beragama.. Published on The Jakarta Post (http://www.thejakartapost.com) Depok mayor sued for annulling church permit Yuli Tri Suwarni, The Jakarta Post , Bandung | Thu, 05/07/2009 2:29 PM | Headlines Members of the Huria Kristen Batak Protestant (HKBP) congregation in Depok decided Wednesday to sue Depok Mayor Nurmahmudi Ismail for revoking a building permit for a church in Cinere, Depok. Dozens of HKBP members, represented by lawyer Junimart Girsang, filed a lawsuit at the State Administrative Court in Bandung appealing to the court to cancel a Depok municipal ordinance on the revocation on March 27, 2009, of a building permit for a church and a multipurpose hall under the name of HKBP Pangkalan Jati Gandul on Jl. Pesanggrahan in Cinere. Junimart said the mayor's ordinance lacked strong legal basis and went against the principle of freedom of worship. He added his clients had obtained a building permit issued by the Bogor regent on June 13, 1998, which served as a legal basis to start building the church and hall from October 1998. By January 2009, they had already completed the foundation, the ground floor and columns for the second floor, before construction was halted due to the issuance of the mayor's decree against the building permit, Junimart said in Bandung. He added opposition by the majority Muslim residents in the area the church was being built could not serve as a valid reason for the mayor to issue the one-sided decision. He insisted the church and hall construction complied with Law No. 28/2002 on Buildings, and Government Regulation No. 36/2005 and Depok Municipal Ordinance No. 3/2006 on Buildings and Building Permit Fees. We regret the mayor's action, which goes against basic human rights as stipulated in Article 22 of Law No. 39/1999, which guarantees freedom for anyone to choose a religion and pray according to their faith, Junimart said. The construction work has been halted temporarily because of the decision. He added the congregation had tried to meet with the Depok mayor prior to filing the lawsuit, but had not met with a serious response. The plaintiffs also asked the court for a temporary ruling by postponing the implementation of the municipal decree until the State Administrative Court had issued a definite ruling. A series of attacks on churches broke out in West Java several years ago, hammering home the reality of suppression of religious freedom in predominantly Muslim Indonesia. The number of churches forcibly closed in West Java alone was reported to be more than 30 in the period between September 2004 and April 2007. Dozens of other churches were also forced to close down in other provinces across the country during the same period. Under a revised joint decree issued by Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni, the establishment of a house of worship must be approved by at least 60 local residents and have a minimum congregation size of 90 people. [zamanku] The New York Times: Chemist Shows How RNA Can Be the Starting Point for Life
but as a phosphate-based life form.” Dr. Sutherland’s proposal has not convinced everyone. Dr. Robert Shapiro, a chemist at New York University, said the recipe “definitely does not meet my criteria for a plausible pathway to the RNA world.” He said that cyano-acetylene, one of Dr. Sutherland’s assumed starting materials, is quickly destroyed by other chemicals and its appearance in pure form on the early earth “could be considered a fantasy.” Dr. Sutherland replied that the chemical is consumed fastest in the reaction he proposes, and that since it has been detected on Titan there is no reason it should not have been present on the early earth. If Dr. Sutherland’s proposal is correct it will set conditions that should help solve the many other problems in reconstructing the origin of life. Darwin, in a famous letter of 1871 to the botanist Joseph Hooker, surmised that life began “in some warm little pond, with all sorts of ammonia and phosphoric salts.” But the warm little pond has given way in recent years to the belief that life began in some exotic environment like the fissures of a volcano or in the deep sea vents that line the ocean floor. Dr. Sutherland’s report supports Darwin. His proposed chemical reaction take place at moderate temperatures, though one goes best at 60 degrees Celsius. “It’s consistent with a warm pond evaporating as the sun comes out,” he said. His scenario would rule out deep sea vents as the place where life originated because it requires ultraviolet light. A serious puzzle about the nature of life is that most of its molecules are right-handed or left-handed, whereas in nature mixtures of both forms exist. Dr. Joyce said he had hoped an explanation for the one-handedness of biological molecules would emerge from prebiotic chemistry, but Dr. Sutherland’s reactions do not supply any such explanation. One is certainly required because of what is known to chemists as “original syn,” referring to a chemical operation that can affect a molecule’s handedness. Dr. Sutherland said he was working on this problem and on others, including how to enclose the primitive RNA molecules in some kind of membrane as the precursor to the first living cell.

Taik kebo... : --- Print | Close this window Darwin still causing waves after 150 years Wed Jun 4, 2008 3:35pm EDT By Jeremy Lovell LONDON (Reuters) - Speeches and a scientific meeting next month will kick off 18 months of events to celebrate the impact and lasting legacy of Charles Darwin, whose theories on evolution are still causing waves 150 years later. It was on July 1, 1858 that papers on the development of animals by Darwin and fellow scientist Alfred Wallace were presented to the Linnean Society in London representing the cream of scientific knowledge. They did not go down well. There was very little reaction in the room, Linnean Society librarian Lynda Brooks said on Wednesday. But the real furor didn't begin until Darwin published 'On The Origin of Species' the following year. On July 1 this year the society, which still prides itself as the repository of natural history expertise in Britain, will hold a meeting to discuss how much scientific understanding of the controversial theories has developed since then. The celebrations will cover three significant events in the life of the shy, retiring scientist who shook the world. February 2009 will be the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth and the following November will be the 150th anniversary of the publication of Origin. There is a grandeur in this view of life ... that whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved, are the concluding lines of the revolutionary book. Darwin, knowing the reaction he was likely to receive, held back for years from airing and then publishing his theories on the principle of natural selection. In the end he was stampeded into action by news that Wallace had reached the same conclusions from completely different observations and was about to publish. Both papers were read to the Linneans on the same day. Darwin's fears were correct. He was pilloried by the scientific and religious establishment of the time. One famous caricature depicted him with the body of a monkey, so angered were people by the suggestion that they might have descended from the apes rather than having been created in the image of God. His theories are still rejected by some, notably creationists in the United States, and are less than welcome in the Middle East. Even in Britain a poll in 2006 showed that only 48 percent of people believed Darwin's evolutionary theories. The 18 months of events, which include exhibitions and seminars at London's Natural History Museum among others, student exchanges and scientific meetings, will culminate in a three day conference in Egypt in November 2009. [zamanku] CBSNews: Vatican Paper Hits 'Intelligent Design'
Masih ada manusia berotrak kerbau yang percaya Adam itu diciptakah Tuhan atau Allah.? .- Vatican Paper Hits 'Intelligent Design' VATICAN CITY, Jan. 18, 2006 (AP) The Vatican newspaper has published an article saying intelligent design is not science and that teaching it alongside evolutionary theory in school classrooms only creates confusion. The article in Tuesday's editions of L'Osservatore Romano was the latest in a series of interventions by Vatican officials _ including the pope _ on the issue that has dominated headlines in the United States. The author, Fiorenzo Facchini, a professor of evolutionary biology at the University of Bologna, laid out the scientific rationale for Darwin's theory of evolution, saying that in the scientific world, biological evolution represents the interpretative key of the history of life on Earth. He lamented that certain American creationists had brought the debate back to the dogmatic 1800s, and said their arguments weren't science but ideology. This isn't how science is done, he wrote. If the model proposed by Darwin is deemed insufficient, one should look for another, but it's not correct from a methodological point of view to take oneself away from the scientific field pretending to do science. Intelligent design doesn't belong to science and the pretext that it be taught as a scientific theory alongside Darwin's explanation is unjustified, he wrote. It only creates confusion between the scientific and philosophical and religious planes. Supporters of intelligent design hold that some features of the universe and living things are so complex they must have been designed by a higher intelligence. Critics say intelligent design is merely creationism _ a literal reading of the Bible's story of creation _ camouflaged in scientific language and say it does not belong in science curriculum. Facchini said he recognized some Darwin proponents erroneously assume that evolution explains everything. Better to recognize that the problem from the scientific point of view remains open, he said. But he concluded: In a vision that goes beyond the empirical horizon, we can say that we aren't men by chance or by necessity, and that the human experience has a sense and a direction signaled by a superior design. The article echoed similar arguments by the Vatican's chief astronomer, the Rev. George Coyne, who said intelligent design wasn't science and had no place in school classrooms. Pope Benedict XVI reaffirmed in off-the-cuff comments in November that the universe was made by an intelligent project and criticized those who in the name of science say its creation was without direction or order. [zamanku] BBC NEWS: 'Missing link' fossil seal walked
'Missing link' fossil seal walked By Richard Black Environment correspondent, BBC News website It may look like a cross between a seal and an otter; but an Arctic fossil could, scientists say, hold the secret of seal evolution in its feet. A skeleton unearthed in northern Canada shows a creature with feet that were probably webbed, but were not flippers. Writing in the journal Nature, scientists suggest the 23 million-year-old proto-seal would have walked on land and swum in fresh water. It is the oldest seal ancestor found so far and has been named Pujilla darwini. Pujilla is the term for young sea mammal in the Inuktitut language, spoken by Inuit groups in Devon Island where the fossil was found. “ Pujilla is the evolutionary evidence we have been lacking for so long ” Mary Dawson Carnegie Museum of Natural History And the reference to Charles Darwin honours the famous biologist's contention that land mammals would naturally move into the marine environment via a fresh water stage, just as pinnipeds - seals, sealions and walruses - have apparently done. The find suggests that pinnipeds went through a fresh water phase in their evolution, said Natalia Rybczynski from the Canadian Museum of Nature (CMN) in Ottawa, who led the fieldwork. It also provides us with a glimpse of what pinnipeds looked like before they had flippers. Flip side The skeleton was about 65% complete, which enabled the researchers to reconstruct what the animal would have looked like in remarkable detail. The legs suggest it would have walked upright on land; but the foot bones hint strongly at webbed feet. The fact that the remains were found in a former crater lake that has also yielded fossil fish from the same period was additional evidence for a semi-aquatic past. The remarkably preserved skeleton of Pujilla had heavy limbs, indicative of well developed muscles, and flattened phalanges (finger or toe bones) which suggest that the feet were webbed - but not flippers, said Mary Dawson from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, US, another of the scientists involved. This animal was likely adept at both swimming and walking on land. Pujilla is the evolutionary evidence we have been lacking for so long. Until now, the most primitive fossil pinniped was a creature called Enaliarctos that dates from about the same period and appears to have lived in the sea along the northwestern coasts of North America. Enaliarctos had flippers, but may have had to bring its prey to the shore for eating, whereas modern pinnipeds manage it at sea. Intriguingly, different species of present-day seal swim in different ways - either rotating their flippers, or waving their hind-quarters from side to side, using the hind limbs for propulsion. Enaliarctos appears to have been capable of both modes of swimming - and as a four-legged animal with four webbed feet, Pujilla is a logical fore-runner of this creature which could swim with all four limbs. The new discovery also shows, the scientists say, that seals, sealions and walruses very likely had their origins in the Arctic. Darwin forecast the transition from land to sea via fresh water in his seminal work On the Origin of Species, published 150 years ago this year. A strictly terrestrial animal, by occasionally hunting for food in shallow water, then in streams or lakes, might at last be converted in an animal so thoroughly aquatic as to brace the open ocean, he wrote. richard.black-inter...@bbc.co.uk Story from BBC NEWS: http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/pr/fr/-/2/hi/science/nature/8012322.stm Published: 2009/04/22 19:27:50 GMT © BBC MMIX Print Sponsor --- Jusfiq Hadjar gelar Sutan Maradjo Lelo Allah yang disembah orang Islam tipikal dan yang digambarkan oleh al-Mushaf itu dungu, buas, kejam, keji, ganas, zalim lagi biadab hanyalah Allah fiktif.

(Credit: iStockphoto/Ernst Daniel Scheffler) ScienceDaily (Apr. 16, 2009) — A study of gene expression in chickens, frogs, pufferfish, mice and people has revealed surprising similarities in several key tissues. Researchers have shown that expression in tissues with a limited number of specialized cell types is strongly conserved, even between the mammalian and non-mammalian vertebrates. Timothy Hughes from the University of Toronto, Canada, worked with a team of researchers to investigate evolutionary alterations in gene regulation in the five different vertebrates. They found that although the specialized DNA sequences that regulate the expression of the genes seem to have changed beyond recognition over the hundreds of millions of years since the clades parted evolutionary company, the actual patterns of gene expression remain closely conserved. According to Hughes, There are clearly strong evolutionary constraints on tissue-specific gene expression. Many genes show conserved human/fish expression despite having almost no nonexonic conserved primary sequence. The authors studied 3074 genes that were present as a single unambiguous copy in each of the five genomes. The similar expression profiles they uncovered suggest the existence of a basic ancestral pattern of expression in each tissue, the so-called 'inner fish'. The strongest similarities were seen in brain tissue. Hughes said, This relatively low divergence of gene expression in brain supports the hypothesis that neurons participate in more functional interactions than cells in other tissues – imposing constraints on the degree of alteration that can be tolerated. Genes expressed in tissues subject to greater environmental influence (such as intestine, stomach and spleen) may be more likely to take on new roles and diverge in expression as a means of adaptation. Although this study only investigated vertebrates, these expression profiles may go much further back into our past. The authors conclude, It is likely that the conservation of gene expression extends beyond the base of vertebrates, coexpression of neuronal genes, for example, has been observed as far as nematodes. The shark arch gill skeleton (left) shows primitive gill rays that are found only in sharks and other cartilaginous fishes. The gills of other fishes (right) are also arched but lack gill rays. This primitive feature of sharks allowed the researchers to link the developmental genetic program for fins and limbs to the more primitive one for gill rays. (Credit: Image by J. Andrew Gillis, University of Chicago) ScienceDaily (Mar. 25, 2009) — The genetic toolkit that animals use to build fins and limbs is the same genetic toolkit that controls the development of part of the gill skeleton in sharks, according to a new study. The research is published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on March 23, 2009, by Andrew Gillis and Neil Shubin of the University of Chicago, and Randall Dahn of Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory. In fact, the skeleton of any appendage off the body of an animal is probably patterned by the developmental genetic program that we have traced back to formation of gills in sharks, said Andrew Gillis, lead author of the paper and a graduate student in the Department of Organismal Biology and Anatomy at the University of Chicago. We have pushed back the evolutionary origin of the developmental genetic program that patterns fins and limbs. This new finding is consistent with an old theory, often discounted in science textbooks, that fins and (later) limbs evolved from the gills of an extinct vertebrate, Gillis added. A dearth of fossils prevents us from definitely concluding that fins evolved from gills. Nevertheless, this research shows that the genetic architecture of gills, fins and limbs is the same. The research builds on the breakthrough discovery of the fossil Tiktaalik, a fish with legs, by Neil Shubin and his colleagues in 2006. This is another example of how evolution uses common developmental programs to pattern different anatomical structures, said Shubin, who is the senior author on the PNAS paper and Professor and Associate Dean of Organismal and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Chicago. In this case, shared developmental mechanisms pattern the skeletons of vertebrate gill arches and paired fins. The research also showed for the first time that the gill arch skeleton of embryonic skates (a living relative of sharks that has gill rays) responds to treatment with the vitamin A derivative retinoic acid in the same way a limb or fin skeleton does: by making a mirror image duplicate of the structure as the embryo develops. According to the researchers, the genetic circuitry that patterns paired appendages (arms, legs and fins) has a deep evolutionary origin that actually predates the origin of paired appendages themselves. These findings suggest that when paired appendages appeared, the mechanism used to pattern the skeleton was co-opted from the gills, Gillis said. Perhaps we should think of shark gills as another type of vertebrate appendage—one that's patterned in essentially the same way as fins and limbs. The deep structural, functional, and regulatory similarities between paired appendages and developing gill rays, as well as the antiquity of gills relative to paired appendages, suggest that the signaling network that is induced by retinoic acid had a patterning function in gills before the origin of vertebrate appendages, the research concludes. And this function has been retained in the gill rays of living cartilaginous fishes. Journal reference: 1. J. Andrew Gillis, Randall D. Dahna, and Neil H. Shubin. The research concludes that the ancestors of present-day African Pygmies and farmers separated ~60,000 years ago. Pygmies are characterized by a forest-dwelling hunter-gathering lifestyle and distinctive cultural practices and physical traits (e.g., low stature). Two groups of Pygmy populations live in the African rainforests: the Western Pygmies and the Eastern Pygmies. The common origins of the two groups of Pygmies, separated by thousands of kilometers, have been long debated, and their relationships with neighboring farmers remained obscure. The researchers, led by Lluis Quintana-Murci, studied the genetic profile of twelve populations of Pygmies and neighboring farmers dispersed over the African continent, using sequence data from non-coding regions of their genomes. Using simulation-based procedures, they determined that the ancestors of Pygmy hunter-gatherers and farming populations started to diverge ~60,000 years ago, coinciding with a period of important human migration both within and outside Africa. Much later, ~20,000 years ago, Western and Eastern Pygmies separated, concurrently with a period of climate change leading to large retreats of the equatorial rainforest into refugia. The common origin of all Pygmies unmasked in this study led Etienne Patin, one of the leading authors, to conclude that they have probably inherited their distinctive shared physical traits, such as low height, from a common ancestor, rather than by convergent adaptation to the rainforest. However, complete genome-wide profiles of these populations are now needed, both to characterize more precisely their demographic history and to identify genes involved in the adaptation of these populations with different lifestyles to their specific ecological habitats. [zamanku] Aljazeera: Israel demands recognition
Jadi: Netanyahu prinsipnya TIDAK menolak adanya negara Palestina.. Ini langkah yang harus dicatat - dan dihargai. . UPDATED ON: Thursday, April 16, 2009 21:00 Mecca time, 18:00 GMT News Middle East Israel demands recognition Mitchell, left, reiterated his support for a two-state solution as he met Lieberman [AFP] Israel's prime minister has told a visiting US envoy that the Palestinians must recognise the Jewish state before it will discuss establishing an independent Palestinian state. Benyamin Netanyahu made the remarks as he met George Mitchell, the US special envoy for the Middle East, in Tel Aviv on Thursday. Israel expects the Palestinians to first recognise Israel as a Jewish state before talking about two states for two peoples, a senior official in Netanyahu's office quoted the new prime minister as saying. Earlier, after meeting Avigdor Lieberman, the Israeli foreign minister, Mitchell had repeated Washington's support for a Palestinian state. I reiterated to the foreign minister that US policy favours, with respect to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a two-state solution which will have a Palestinian state living in peace alongside the Jewish state of Israel, he said. We look forward also to efforts to achieving comprehensive peace throughout the region. Committed Jacky Rowland, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Jerusalem, said: This is something that [US President Barack] Obama has overtly, clearly and unambiguously committed himself to in speeches that he made to Europe in the last few weeks. IN VIDEO Jerusalem digging deepens Israeli-Palestinian rift More videos ... He really did state the US commitment to the two-state solution as being the shape for a final agreement between the Palestinians and the Israelis. However, Netanyahu has said that he wants any talks with Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, to focus mainly on security and economic issues. Furthermore, Lieberman, an Israeli nationalist, has flatly rejected a restart of the Israeli-Palestinian talks launched by George Bush, the former US president, in Annapolis in 2007. On Thursday, the Israeli foreign minister, said that the peace process has reached a dead end and that the new government will have to formulate new ideas and approaches, according to a statement from his office. Abdullah Abdullah, head of the PLO foreign affairs committee, told Al Jazeera that Netanyahu was not interested in negotiating. He only puts this condition to block, to sabotage, any attempt by the American envoy move the peace process forward, he said. Peace 'roadmap' Israel committed itself to the principle of a Palestinian state under the 2003 international roadmap for peace, which included a series of steps for Israelis and Palestinians to follow, eventually resulting in negotiations over core issues and the creation of a Palestinian state. Under the Annapolis agreement, the two sides began discussing those final status issues last year. Mitchell was expected to travel to Ramallah in the occupied West Bank on Friday to meet Abbas, who has insisted that the new Israeli cabinet commit itself to a two-state solution before the two sides can resume any talks. The negotiations were halted during Israel's 22-day assault on the Gaza Strip, which left more than 1,300 Palestinians, mainly women and children, dead. [zamanku] livescience: Three Subgroups of Neanderthals Identified
Boleh dibilang tiap hari para ahli diberbagai bidang melengkapi dan menyempurnakan teori evolusi... --- livescience Three Subgroups of Neanderthals Identified By Clara Moskowitz, LiveScience Staff Writer posted: 14 April 2009 08:17 pm ET A Neanderthal Family. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech We tend to think of Neanderthals as one species of cavemen-like creatures, but now scientists say there were actually at least three different subgroups of Neanderthals. Using computer simulations to analyze DNA sequence fragments from 12 Neanderthal fossils, researchers found that the species can be separated into three, or maybe four, distinct genetic groups. The evidence points to a subgroup of Neanderthals in Western Europe, another in Southern Europe near the Mediterranean, a third in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, and possibly a fourth in Western Asia. These groups have been postulated before, but this is the first study analyzing DNA data to look for genetic variations differentiating the subgroups. Neanderthals are a hominid species that lived between about 130,000 and 30,000 years ago. They coexisted with humans for a while, and may even have interbred with us. Because the Neanderthals lived in a very vast territory, and their evolution took place over a very long time, we wonder if there were sub-populations, or if it was a unique population, said researcher Silvana Condemi, a paleoanthropologist at the Universite de la Mediterranee-CNRS-EFS in France. Other studies show differences between Neanderthals and modern humans. For the first time we are working just within Neanderthals and taking into account the diversity within that group. Condemi and Virginie Fabre and Anna Degioanni, also of the Universite de la Mediterranee, describe their findings in the April 13 issue of the journal PLoS ONE. The researchers tested various hypotheses, including that all Neanderthals belonged to a single homogeneous population, or that Neanderthals could be divided into two, three, or more subgroups. They found that the three- and four-group model best fit the data by accounting for the genetic discrepancies seen in the samples. The authors admit that their categorization is based on limited data, since they only have fragments of mitochondrial DNA sequences from a small sample of individuals. Princeton University paleoanthropologist Alan Mann agreed, and said it's too early to draw bounds around sub-populations because we don't have any data from individuals outside of the bounds, such as from Neanderthals in Africa or Southeast Asia. My view is this is very interesting research but it's very premature in our study to be able to draw any but the most generalized and preliminary conclusions, he said in a phone interview. I like the data they present. But at the moment we have to be extremely careful about exactly what we make of this. In the future, the researchers would like to compare their genetic data to what is known about physical distinctions among Neanderthals from different regions, as well as cultural differences, such as unique tool use among various populations. What is nice is that there are some variations in the genetics, and we see also from the bones and teeth that there is some variation, Condemi told LiveScience. We give a confirmation that the Neanderthals are not one homogeneous group. It is not known for sure what eventually caused Neanderthals to die out, while we Homo sapiens have survived to this day. Likely reasons for their demise are competition with humans and climate change. © Imaginova Corp. [zamanku] washingtonpost.com: Scientists Find A DNA Change That Accounts For White Skin
loss. But the newly found glitch is the first found to play a role in the formation of normal white skin. The Penn State team calculates that the gene, known as slc24a5, is responsible for about one-third of the pigment loss that made black skin white. A few other as-yet-unidentified mutated genes apparently account for the rest. Although precise dating is impossible, several scientists speculated on the basis of its spread and variation that the mutation arose between 20,000 and 50,000 years ago. That would be consistent with research showing that a wave of ancestral humans migrated northward and eastward out of Africa about 50,000 years ago. Unlike most mutations, this one quickly overwhelmed its ancestral version, at least in Europe, suggesting it had a real benefit. Many scientists suspect that benefit has to do with vitamin D, made in the body with the help of sunlight and critical to proper bone development. Sun intensity is great enough in equatorial regions that the vitamin can still be made in dark-skinned people despite the ultraviolet shielding effects of melanin. In the north, where sunlight is less intense and cold weather demands that more clothing be worn, melanin's ultraviolet shielding became a liability, the thinking goes. Today that solar requirement is largely irrelevant because many foods are supplemented with vitamin D. Some scientists said they suspect that white skin's rapid rise to genetic dominance may also be the product of sexual selection, a phenomenon of evolutionary biology in which almost any new and showy trait in a healthy individual can become highly prized by those seeking mates, perhaps because it provides evidence of genetic innovativeness. Cheng and co-worker Victor A. Canfield said their discovery could have practical spinoffs. A gene so crucial to the buildup of melanin in the skin might be a good target for new drugs against melanoma, for example, a cancer of melanin cells in which slc24a5 works overtime. But they and others agreed that, for better or worse, the finding's most immediate impact may be an escalating debate about the meaning of race. Recent revelations that all people are more than 99.9 percent genetically identical has proved that race has almost no biological validity. Yet geneticists' claims that race is a phony construct have not rung true to many nonscientists -- and understandably so, said Vivian Ota Wang of the National Human Genome Research Institute in Bethesda. You may tell people that race isn't real and doesn't matter, but they can't catch a cab, Ota Wang said. So unless we take that into account it makes us sound crazy.

[zamanku] BBC NEWS: Netanyahu 'ready for peace talks'
Bagus dah... Dari pada terus berbunuhan --- Netanyahu 'ready for peace talks' Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has told Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas he intends to resume talks and co-operation to promote peace. It was their first contact since Mr Netanyahu took office on 31 March. Mr Abbas initiated the telephone call, which Mr Netanyahu's office described as friendly and warm. The new Israeli leader has not publicly endorsed the creation of a fully independent Palestinian state - a fundamental demand of the Palestinians. An Israeli statement said that during his conversation with Mr Abbas, Mr Netanyahu recalled their past co-operation and conversations, and how he intended to resume this in the future in order to advance peace. 'Not binding' Mr Netanyahu leads a right-leaning coalition, which combines the centre-right, centre-left and far-right parties. During his campaign, he said he was willing to negotiate with the Palestinians but that it was premature to talk of statehood. Instead, he offered Palestinians economic peace. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who leads the right-wing Yisrael Beiteinu party, has dismissed past peace initiatives by US administrations. He has also said the previous Israeli government's acceptance of Palestinian statehood was not binding. On Saturday, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat reiterated his administration's position that that for peace talks to resume, Israel must declare its support for a two-state solution. [zamanku] The Independent: When life as we know it became possible on Earth
Di sorga apa ada oxygen? When life as we know it became possible on Earth The mystery of how our planet's atmosphere became rich in oxygen has finally been solved By Steve Connor, Science editor Thursday, 9 April 2009 It was one of the most important changes to have happened to the Earth's atmosphere and it was the reason why today we can breathe life-giving oxygen. And yet the Great Oxidation Event has remained a mystery – until now. Without oxygen, life on Earth would not exist as we know it. It has provided the supercharged air that has fuelled an explosion in the diversity and size of all living organisms, from the smallest shrimp to the biggest dinosaur. About 21 per cent of air is oxygen, a vital ingredient for living organisms to carry out the most efficient method of converting food into energy using aerobic respiration. Yet an oxygen-rich atmosphere did not always exist, and the explanation for how it came about has eluded generations of scientists. Now a team of researchers led by Kurt Konhauser of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, has come up with a convincing explanation for why oxygen suddenly began to accumulate in the early atmosphere of the Earth about 2.7 billion years ago, when life consisted of nothing more complex than single-cell microbes. The Great Oxidation Event happened, they believe, when one group of oxygen-destroying microbes began to die off, leaving another group of oxygen-producing microbes to gain the ascendancy. The trigger for this event was a fall in a trace metal called nickel, which led to the inexorable rise of oxygen – and life – on Earth. The role of nickel in the story of atmospheric oxygen is new. If Professor Konhauser and his colleagues are right then it could explain not just the explosive evolution of life, but how the Earth itself was shaped, because it the erosive power of oxygen that was so crucial to the sculpturing of rocks, the formation of rivers and the carving out of the coastlines. The Great Oxidation Event is what irreversibly changed surface environments on Earth and ultimately made advanced life possible. It was a major turning point in the evolution of life on our planet, and we are getting closer to understanding how it occurred, said Dominic Papineau of the Carnegie Institution in Washington. Oxygen as a molecule is so reactive that it soon disappears unless it is being constantly produced. The concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere today is maintained by plants carrying out photosynthesis – the conversion of sunlight into chemical energy and oxygen. The first photosynthetic microbes, the blue-green algae or cyanobacteria, are thought to have evolved about 300 million years before the Great Oxidation Event 2.5 billion years ago. But the oxygen they produced was quickly destroyed by the methane gas produced by the far more numerous methanogenic bacteria, which could breathe without oxygen using the less efficient method of anaerobic respiration. These methanogenic bacteria, which still live in the waterlogged, oxygen-starved environment of swamps and wetlands, crucially need nickel to survive. Without a rich supply of nickel, the vital enzymes of these methane-producing microbes are fatally undermined. The scientists found that by analysing a type of sedimentary rock known as banded-iron formations they could monitor levels of nickel in the oceans of the early Earth dating as far back as 3.8 billion years ago. They found there was a marked fall in nickel between 2.7 billion and 2.5 billion years ago – the same time as the Great Oxidation Event. The timing fits very well. The drop in nickel could have set the stage for the Great Oxidation Event. And from what we know about living methogens, lower levels of nickel would have cut back methane production, Dr Papineau said. The nickel connection was not something anyone had considered before. But our study indicates that it may have had a huge impact on the Earth's environment and on the history of life, he said. Professor Konhauser said that the study, published in Nature, supports the idea that these methane-producing microbes prevented oxygen from accumulating in the early atmosphere for hundreds of millions of years. The scientists believe that nickel levels fell because the Earth's crust had cooled down during this period, which meant that there was less nickel being ejected from volcanic eruptions into the ocean. We're certain from looking at the rocks in banded-iron formations that nickel dropped about 2.5 billion years ago to about half its previous value. The issue is how the methane-producing microbes responded to this decrease in nickel. We think they died off, Professor Konhauser said. Although the Great Oxidation Event did not lead to a sudden rise of oxygen to levels like those experienced today, it did cause a significant rise that has never been reversed. --- Jusfiq Hadjar

[zamanku] BBC NEWS: Obama reaches out to Muslim world
Obama reaches out to Muslim world During his first visit to a mainly Muslim state, President Barack Obama has declared that the US is not and will never be at war with Islam. Addressing the Turkish parliament, Mr Obama called for a greater partnership with the Muslim world and said the US would soon launch outreach programmes. America's relationship with the Muslim world cannot and will not be based on opposition to al-Qaeda, he said. Mr Obama also said Washington supported Turkey's efforts to join the EU. Earlier, at a news conference with his Turkish counterpart, Abdullah Gul, he urged Turkey to help bridge the gap between the Muslim and Western worlds. He said his visit was a statement about the importance of Turkey, not just to the United States, but to the world. “ Obama is a seducer, in the nicest possible way of course. He smiles and refers to himself as Hussein and does all the other things that make Europeans swoon. Then he has his way. Or does he...? ” Justin Webb BBC North America editor The US president began his visit to Turkey on Monday morning by laying a wreath at the tomb of the founder of modern Turkish state, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, whose vision and courage he praised. He then travelled to the presidential palace in Ankara for talks with President Abdullah Gul, before giving an address to the Turkish Grand National Assembly. Mr Obama devoted much of his speech to urging a greater bond between Americans and Muslims, admitting that the trust that binds us has been strained. Let me say this as clearly as I can: the United States is not and will never be at war with Islam, he stated. In fact, our partnership with the Muslim world is critical in rolling back a fringe ideology that people of all faiths reject. He said; The United States has been enriched by Muslim Americans. Many other Americans have Muslims in their family, or have lived in a Muslim-majority country - I know, because I am one of them. And when people look back on this time, let it be said of America that we extended the hand of friendship, he said. There is an old Turkish proverb: 'You cannot put out fire with flames.' 'Crucial ally' In his speech, Mr Obama said the US considered Turkey a critical ally, despite the deterioration of their relations over the war in Iraq. He said that while they had not always agreed on everything, the two states were stronger when they worked together. The president also reiterated that the US government strongly supported Turkey's bid to become a member of the European Union. Europe gains by diversity of ethnicity, tradition and faith - it is not diminished by it, he said to a round of applause from the audience. And Turkish membership would broaden and strengthen Europe's foundation once more. The EU agreed to open accession talks with Ankara in 2004, but in recent years Turkey has made little progress with democratic reforms which would improve its chances of membership, correspondents say. Later in his address, Mr Obama said the US strongly supported the full normalisation of relations between Turkey and Armenia. At his earlier news conference with President Gul, he had stood by his 2008 assertion that the killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks in 1915 constituted genocide - without repeating the word. The issue remains highly sensitive between the governments of Armenia and Turkey, which denies those killed were victims of systematic genocide, and has prevented normal relations between them for many years. During his election campaign, Mr Obama said the Armenian genocide is not an allegation, a personal opinion, or a point of view, but rather a widely documented fact supported by an overwhelming body of historical evidence. The BBC's Sarah Rainsford in Ankara says the fact that Mr Obama chose to come to Turkey on only his second purely bilateral visit has been welcomed as a sign that he wants to re-engage with it. Public support for the US dropped to a record low during the Bush administration, fuelled mostly by fierce opposition to the invasion of Iraq, our correspondent says. The summit comes hours after North Korea controversially launched a rocket despite international warnings. Mr Obama condemned the launch, saying that North Korea had further isolated itself from the community of nations, and should refrain from further provocative actions. To achieve a global ban on nuclear testing, the Obama Administration will work to bring the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) into force, the White House said in a statement issued before Mr Obama's speech. It added that Mr Obama would also seek Senate ratification of the CTBT - an agreement that would ban all nuclear explosions for any purpose - which cannot currently come into effect as nuclear powers such as the US and China have not ratified it, and India and Pakistan have not signed it. In his speech, Mr Obama is also expected to seek to negotiate a new international treaty that verifiably ends the production of fissile materials for nuclear weapons, the statement said. The new US administration is currently reviewing the plans, which are meant to counter nuclear attacks from countries like Iran and North Korea but which Moscow sees as a threat. European pledges After his speech Mr Obama will meet EU leaders to discuss issues such as climate change and energy security. He will then fly to Turkey for the final stop of his European tour. The US president arrived in Prague late on Saturday from the Nato summit in Strasbourg, where he secured pledges from European nations to send more troops to Afghanistan to provide security for elections in August. Ahead of his arrival several hundred people gathered in Prague to protest against the missile shield. Further protests are expected on Sunday. Mr Obama's first trip to Eastern Europe, 20 years since the end of the Cold War, was supposed to be the highlight of the Czech presidency of the EU. But his official engagements there have been scaled down in the wake of Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek's resignation late last month, after losing a no-confidence motion. Mr Topolanek - who has also described Mr Obama's stimulus plan as the road to hell - will remain in office until a new cabinet is appointed or fresh elections are held. Yet his support for a controversial missile shield could anger Russia. An estimated 30,000 people streamed into the historic center of Prague on Sunday to hear Obama deliver his first major public speech in Europe since becoming president. With Prague Castle as a backdrop, Obama proposed measures to eliminate existing nuclear weapons, stop further nuclear proliferation and prevent terrorists from acquiring nuclear weapons or materials. The US leader's speech comes as the Czech Republic marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of communism. As the only nuclear power who have used a nuclear weapon, the United States has a moral responsibility to act, Obama said. We cannot succeed in this endeavor alone, but we can start it. This provocation underscores the need for action, Obama said. Violations must be punished. Words must mean something. Now is the time for a strong international response. Pyongyang has said it was putting a communications satellite into orbit. But Japan, South Korea and Washington believe the launch was a screen to test a ballistic missile. He also indicated that the United States would go forward with a controversial missile defense system planned for the Czech Republic and Poland. The proposal has angered Russia, despite US assurances that the system is meant to protect Europe from an attack by Iran. As long as the threat from Iran persists, we will go forward with the missile system, Obama said. If the Iranian threat is eliminated, we will have a stronger basis for security, and the driving force for missile construction in Europe will be removed. That announcement could heighten tensions with Russia. Yet Obama said he's eager to negotiate a legally-binding arms reduction treaty with Russia. Tapi masih ada kok orang Nasrani yang rusak otaknya dan bilang bahwa teori Darwin itu salah... -- FOXNews.com Anglican Reverend: We Owe Darwin an Apology Tuesday , September 16, 2008 AP ADVERTISEMENTClick here to find out more! LONDON — The Church of England owes Charles Darwin an apology for its hostile 19th-century reaction to the naturalist's theory of evolution through natural selection, a cleric wrote on an Anglican Web site launched Monday. The Rev. Malcolm Brown, who heads the church's public affairs department, issued the statement to mark Darwin's bicentenary and the 150th anniversary of the seminal work On the Origin of Species, both of which fall next year. Brown said the Church of England should say it is sorry for misunderstanding him at the time he released his findings and, by getting our first reaction wrong, encouraging others to misunderstand [Darwin] still. • Click here to visit FOXNews.com's Evolution Paleontology Center. The Church of England said Brown's statement reflected its position on Darwin but did not constitute an official apology. The church's stance sets it apart from fundamentalist Christians, who believe evolutionary theory is incompatible with the biblical story of the Earth's creation. Darwin was born into the Church of England, educated at a church boarding school and trained to become an Anglican priest. However, his theory that species evolve over generations through a process of natural selection brought him into conflict with the church. The Church of England did not take an official stance against Darwin's theories, but many senior Anglicans reacted with hostility to his ideas, arguing against them at public debates. At an Oxford University debate in 1860, the bishop of Oxford, Samuel Wilberforce, famously asked scientist Thomas Huxley whether it was through his grandfather or his grandmother that he claimed to be descended from a monkey. Critics included the Rev. John Stevens Henslow and Adam Sedgwick, both scientists who had taught Darwin at Cambridge. Sedgwick wrote that he found some of Darwin's ideas utterly false and grievously mischievous. Brown said that from a modern perspective, it was hard to avoid the thought that the reaction against Darwin was based on what would now be called the yuck factor ... when he proposed a lineage from apes to humans. Brown called for a rapprochement between Christianity and Darwinism. The bishop of Swindon, Lee Rayfield, who also is an immunologist, said religion and science were not mutually exclusive. He said he opposed Christians for whom evolution is equated with atheism as well as Darwinists who felt ideas about evolution completely undermine any kind of credibility for God. That's completely wrong, he told British Broadcasting Corp. radio. It's a false polarization. This is not the first time a cleric or a church has been pressed to apologize for past actions. In 1992, Pope John Paul II said the Roman Catholic Church was wrong to condemn astronomer Galileo Galilei for maintaining that the Earth is not the center of the universe. The Church of England said sorry two years ago for its role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Still, a descendant of Darwin's said the Anglicans' latest bout of soul-searching served little purpose. Why bother? the scientist's great-great-grandson Andrew Darwin was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail newspaper. When an apology is made after 200 years, it's not so much to right a wrong, but to make the person or organization making the apology feel better. [zamanku] BBC NEWS: Vatican hosts Darwin conference
Susah kok bagi orang beragama untuk menolak teori Darwin... Bukti bahwa teori Darwin itu benar sudah bertumbuk-tumpuk... .Hanya orang yang rusak oktaknya yang masih menolak teori Darwin. - Vatican hosts Darwin conference By David Willey BBC News, Rome The Vatican is sponsoring a five day conference to mark the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin's Origin of Species. The subject is the compatibility of evolution and creation. It is one of two separate international academic conferences being sponsored by the Vatican this year. They aim to re-examine the work of scientific thinkers whose revolutionary ideas challenged religious belief: Galileo and Charles Darwin. Scientists, philosophers and theologians from around the world are gathering at the prestigious Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome to discuss the compatibility of Darwin's theory of evolution and Catholic teaching. Christian churches were long hostile to Darwin because his theory conflicted with the literal biblical account of creation. But the Catholic Church never condemned Darwin, as it condemned and silenced Galileo. Pope John Paul II said that evolution was more than a hypothesis. “ The design of organisms is not what would be expected from an intelligent engineer ” Prof Francisco Ayala Yet as recently as 2006 a leading Catholic Cardinal, Christoff Schoenborn, of Vienna, a former student and friend of Pope Benedict XVI caused controversy by saying that Darwin's theory of natural selection was incompatible with Christian belief. A leading American scholar of biology, Prof Francisco Ayala, plans to tell the conference that the so-called theory of intelligent design, proposed by Creationists, is flawed. The design of organisms is not what would be expected from an intelligent engineer, but imperfect and worse, he said. Defects, dysfunctions, oddities, waste and cruelty pervade the living world. [zamanku] Reuters: Evolution fine but no apology to Darwin: Vatican
Evolution fine but no apology to Darwin: Vatican Tue Sep 16, 2008 4:07pm EDT By Philip Pullella VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican said on Tuesday the theory of evolution was compatible with the Bible but planned no posthumous apology to Charles Darwin for the cold reception it gave him 150 years ago. Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi, the Vatican's culture minister, was speaking at the announcement of a Rome conference of scientists, theologians and philosophers to be held next March marking the 150th anniversary of the publication of Darwin's The Origin of Species. Christian churches were long hostile to Darwin because his theory conflicted with the literal biblical account of creation. Earlier this week a leading Anglican churchman, Rev. Malcolm Brown, said the Church of England owed Darwin an apology for the way his ideas were received by Anglicans in Britain. Pope Pius XII described evolution as a valid scientific approach to the development of humans in 1950 and Pope John Paul reiterated that in 1996. But Ravasi said the Vatican had no intention of apologizing for earlier negative views. Maybe we should abandon the idea of issuing apologies as if history was a court eternally in session, he said, adding that Darwin's theories were never condemned by the Catholic Church nor was his book ever banned. Creationism is the belief that God created the world in six days as described in the Bible. The Catholic Church does not read the Genesis account of creation literally, saying it is an allegory for the way God created the world. Some other Christians, mostly conservative Protestants in the United States, read Genesis literally and object to evolution being taught in biology class in public high schools. Sarah Palin, the Republican candidate for the U.S. vice presidency, said in 2006 that she supported teaching both creationism and evolution in schools but has subsequently said creationism does not have to be part of curriculum. THEISTIC EVOLUTION The Catholic Church teaches theistic evolution, a stand that accepts evolution as a scientific theory and sees no reason why God could not have used a natural evolutionary process in the forming of the human species. It objects to using evolution as the basis for an atheist philosophy that denies God's existence or any divine role in creation. It also objects to using Genesis as a scientific text. As Ravasi put it, creationism belongs to the strictly theological sphere and could not be used ideologically in science. Professor Philip Sloan of Notre Dame University, which is jointly holding next year's conference with Rome's Pontifical Gregorian University, said the gathering would be an important contribution to explaining the Catholic stand on evolution. In the United States, and now elsewhere, we have an ongoing public debate over evolution that has social, political and religious dimensions, he said. Most of this debate has been taking place without a strong Catholic theological presence, and the discussion has suffered accordingly, he said. Pope Benedict discussed these issues with his former doctoral students at their annual meeting in 2006. In a speech in Paris last week, he spoke out against biblical literalism. [zamanku] Church of England: Good religion needs good science
this be? The Church of England in 1860 was already facing challenges to its former pre-eminence. Freethinking and non-conformist Christianity were confronting the power of the established church – and then came Darwin. These were nervous times for Anglicans, and when worldly power is thought of as God-given, threats to power are perceived as attacks on God. What was true for Anglicans in 1860 is largely true for all kinds of Christians today, although (depending where you are in the world) the threat may be perceived to come from radical Islam, secularism, consumerism or atheism. The cultures within which Christians try to be faithful are widely seen to be hostile, at least in some respects, and discipleship means, at some level, standing against some social trends. The problem for all Christians is discerning where the surrounding culture is really a threat and where it is compatible with our understanding of God. Because “science” has been widely regarded as offering a total theory of everything; because some scientists have encouraged this claim; perhaps because we all know how reliant we are on scientific ideas which we barely understand and which make us nervous of our ignorance; and perhaps because the churches have not been good at equipping people to see God at work in the contemporary world – for all these reasons and others, a parody of science has become a focus for certain forms of social unease. In so far as the practice of science has its hubristic side, there is a case for science to answer. In so far as 'Social Darwinism' has diminished our sense of being human and being in relationships, there are real problems to address. But first it is important to recognise that the anti-evolutionary fervour in some corners of the churches may be a kind of proxy issue for other discontents; and, perhaps most of all, an indictment of the churches’ failure to tell their own story – Jesus’s story – with conviction in a way which works with the grain of the world as God has revealed it to be, both through the Bible and in the work of scientists of Darwin’s calibre. Rapproachment between Darwin and Christian faith At a university in Kansas, I asked a biology professor how he coped with teaching Darwin’s theories to students whose churches insisted that evolution was heresy and whose schools taught creationism. “No problem,” he replied, “the kids know that if they want a good job they need a degree, and if they want a degree they have to work with evolution theory. Creationism is for church, as far as they’re concerned. Here, they’re Darwinists.” Perhaps he was over-cynical. But he was also pointing to young lives which could not be lived with integrity – the very opposite of how Christians are called to live. There is no integrity to be found either in rejecting Darwin’s ideas wholesale or in elevating them into the kind of grand theory which reduces humanity to the sum of our evolutionary urges. For the sake of human integrity – and thus for the sake of good Christian living – some rapprochement between Darwin and Christian faith is essential. Charles Darwin: 200 years from your birth, the Church of England owes you an apology for misunderstanding you and, by getting our first reaction wrong, encouraging others to misunderstand you still. We try to practice the old virtues of 'faith seeking understanding' and hope that makes some amends. But the struggle for your reputation is not over yet, and the problem is not just your religious opponents but those who falsely claim you in support of their own interests. Good religion needs to work constructively with good science – and I dare to suggest that the opposite may be true as well. [zamanku] BBC NEWS: UN appoints Gaza war-crimes team
UN appoints Gaza war-crimes team The UN has appointed South African judge and former war crimes prosecutor Richard Goldstone to lead a fact-finding mission to the Gaza Strip. Mr Goldstone will investigate alleged violations of international law during the recent conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants. Martin Uhomoibhi, president of the UN Human Rights Council, said the mission would be independent and impartial. Israel calls the council biased and has previously refused to co-operate. Mr Goldstone will lead a four-member team, which also includes experts from Pakistan, Britain, and Ireland, in investigating all violations of international humanitarian law before, during and after the Israeli campaign in Gaza that ended on 18 January. It's in the interest of the victims. It brings acknowledgment of what happened to them. It can assist the healing process, Mr Goldstone said. I would hope it's in the interests of all the political actors, too. The fact-finding mission, which will aim to provide clarity on the legality of the deaths and destruction, is due to start work in the region within weeks, the UN said. Israel 'singled out' The council voted to set up the investigation into at a special meeting in January, after widespread allegations of war crimes committed by Israeli forces in Gaza. “ I believe I can approach the daunting task that I have accepted in an even-handed and impartial manner ” Richard Goldstone However, the Israeli army says its operations in the Gaza Strip were carried out in compliance with the rules of warfare under international law. It says it took numerous measures to avoid causing harm to the civilian population. The Palestinian militant group Hamas is widely accused of basing its forces within heavily populated areas, allegations it denies. The Israeli government has in the past refused to co-operate with UN human rights council investigations, including one led by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. It is not clear whether Israel will co-operate with the new investigation. This committee is instructed not to seek out the truth but to single out Israel for alleged crimes, said Yigal Palmor, spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry. He said the council was a discredited body. 'Shock' appointment Mr Goldstone is a former UN chief prosecutor for war crimes in Yugoslavia and Rwanda. He is also a former judge at the South African constitutional court. He is also on the board of governors at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Mr Goldstone said he was shocked, as a Jew, to be invited to head the mission. I've taken a deep interest in what happens in Israel. I'm associated with organisations that have worked in Israel. And I believe I can approach the daunting task that I have accepted in an even-handed and impartial manner. [zamanku] BBC NEWS: 'No halt' to Gaza arms smuggling
Jadi, walaupun sudah lebih dari seribu orang Palestina dibunuhi serdadu Israel dan ratusan rumah dihancurkan dan gedung PBB juga dibom, serangan Israel ke Gaza itu ternyata juga sia-sia saja.. BBC NEWS 'No halt' to Gaza arms smuggling The flow of explosives and weapons smuggled into Gaza has continued since Israel's military operation, a senior Israeli intelligence official has said. Shin Bet security service head Yuval Diskin said 22 tonnes of explosives, dozens of rockets and hundreds of mortar rounds had entered Gaza. But he said rockets attacks were reduced and Egyptian attempts to combat the smuggling had improved. Israel said the offensive aimed to cut down Palestinian rocket attacks. In his briefing to the cabinet on Sunday, Mr Diskin also noted a drop in the number of rockets fired into Israel in recent weeks. He said Hamas, which controls Gaza, was carrying out arrests of members of smaller militant factions to stop attacks, and had signed an agreement with the Islamic Jihad group to end attacks. Among the items smuggled through tunnels under the border with Egypt in recent weeks, were also 45 tonnes of raw materials for the production of weapons, hundreds of mortar shells and dozens of anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles, he said. Tunnels trade The tunnels are also used for smuggling in goods that cannot enter Gaza under Israel's blockade of the strip, which allows only humanitarian basics in through the crossings from Israel. Halting weapons smuggling was a key Israeli demand in the ceasefire deal Israel and Hamas initially sought to negotiate in the wake of the operation. Attempts to reach a deal which would secure the border and ease the blockade have faltered, although the two sides have largely held to the unilateral ceasefires announced to end the 22-day January conflict. But Israel has pressured the US, EU and Egypt to step up attempts to combat the smuggling. Last week outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert made comments widely seen as tacit confirmation of reports that Israel had launched air strikes on a convoy in Sudan said to be carrying weapons for Gaza. [zamanku] BBC : Clinton concern over demolitions
BBC NEWS Clinton concern over demolitions US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says Israeli demolitions of Palestinian homes in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem are of deep concern. She renewed her commitment to an Israeli-Palestinian peace settlement, saying it was a commitment I carry in my heart, not just my portfolio. She was speaking after meeting Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank. It is Mrs Clinton's her first trip to the region as secretary of state. In Jerusalem and Tel Aviv on Tuesday, Mrs Clinton expressed unshakeable support for Israel, but restated the Obama administration's commitment to the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. She will not meet leaders of the rival Palestinian group Hamas, which has dismissed her visit. Observers say they are watching for signs that Washington is determined to make advances on the - until now intractable - problem of securing a peace settlement in the Middle East. 'Unhelpful' Mrs Clinton said the unhelpful planned demolition of homes in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem would be taken up with Israel's government. Dozens of houses - which Israel says were illegally constructed, but which Palestinians say Israel refuses to permit them to build - are due to be torn down in Silwan to make way for a park. The demolition orders have been vociferously condemned by Palestinian leaders. They were among the topics discussed by Mrs Clinton and Mr Abbas during their talks, which also included the situation in the war-ravaged Gaza Strip and moribund Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. Mrs Clinton said she was proud to stand by President Abbas, and to deliver a message from our country: the United States supports the Palestinian Authority as the only legitimate government of the Palestinian people. The US has refused to speak to Hamas, which leads the Gaza Strip, saying it is a terrorist organisation. Earlier, Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum dismissed Mrs Clinton's visit, saying her statements so far had been totally biased in favour of the Zionist occupation and do not reflect any change in American foreign policy, AP news agency reported. 'Time is ripe' Mrs Clinton said the US aimed to foster conditions in which a Palestinian state could be fully realised, adding that time is of the essence. On the plight of residents of Gaza, recently hit by a 22-day Israeli bombardment, she pledged a commitment to reconstruction, saying a child growing up in Gaza... has the same right to go to school, see a doctor, and live with a roof over her head as a child in any country. On peace negotiations, Mr Abbas said he believed the time is ripe to put final-status issues - issues including the status of East Jerusalem, Palestinian refugees, borders, and Israelis settlements - and he added, Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. He said he respected Israelis' choice at the ballot box, but added that the Israeli government should commit itself to the peace roadmap and the two-state solution. A year of peace talks between Mr Abbas' administration and the Israelis have yielded few results. Meanwhile, Israeli settlement-building has continued, with nearly half a million settlers now occupying land in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in contravention to international law, though Israel disputes this. The BBC's Middle East editor, Jeremy Bowen, says that the big question is whether the new US administration of Barack Obama is prepared to twist Mr Netanyahu's arm on the two-state solution. He says there are signs of a growing feeling in Washington that allowing Israel total freedom to decide its own policy on the Palestinians may not, in fact, be a productive way to address Israel's security problems. But he says the main Israeli objection to a Palestinian state is that if it was controlled by an enemy entity such as Hamas, that could in fact be disastrous for Israeli security. 'The Palestinians' own deep internal divisions are also an obstacle to an effective settlement. Gaza is in the hands of the Islamist Hamas faction, while the West Bank administration is led by the more secular Fatah group - though Israeli forces occupy large swathes of the West Bank and both territories are subject to external Israeli controls. [zamanku] BBC NEWS: Challenge of Israeli settlements
. There's a wall dividing East Jerusalem from the West Bank, preventing most Palestinians from accessing the best schools, the best hospitals or going to pray in mosques or churches there. More and more East Jerusalem land is being set aside for Jewish settlers. Then, within the West Bank there are more than 600 physical obstacles placed by Israel blocking Palestinian movement. Israeli settlers occupy 60% of the land there and they are scattered all over the places. This further fragments the territory and very much undermines the economy and prospects for improvement in the Palestinian situation. Israel says this can change with peace. Regarding settlements, checkpoints, the West Bank barrier, it insists what goes up, can come down. But Palestinians focus on what they call facts on the ground. They're not optimistic. Clearly, settlements are not the only stumbling block to peace between Israelis and Palestinians but even the United States, Israel's greatest ally, has been critical of settlements for a long time. In the absence of a peace deal, international agreements require Israel to freeze settlement construction. Yet, during the Bush administration the settler population grew considerably. Barak Obama says he wants to pursue peace here aggressively. But his secretary of state will have to tackle the settler issue with actions, not just words, to really make a difference. [zamanku] BBC NEWS: Chasing dreams of future peace
Chasing dreams of future peace By Jeremy Bowen Middle East editor, BBC News A journey to Ramallah from Jerusalem tells you a lot about the state of peace and war between Israel and the Palestinians. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton does not get the delays at checkpoints that most people face. But if she looked out of the window of her armour-plated SUV she would have seen some of the ways this place is changing, and why that undercuts the policy that she is here to promote. Throughout her visit, speaking to Israelis and Palestinians, Mrs Clinton has been saying that she wants to create a Palestinian state alongside Israel - the so-called two-state solution to the conflict. She says that making a Palestinian state possible is a commitment she carries in her heart, not just in her portfolio as secretary of state. But when others who also believed for years in two states look out of their car windows at what is happening in the West Bank and Jerusalem, they cannot help thinking that their dream has gone. Big chunks of the land that Palestinians want to use for their state has been taken for Jewish settlements, for the network of security roads and military bases that protect them and connect them to Israel, and for the complex of walls and hi-tech fences that make up the separation barrier. And as the land goes, so does trust, on both sides. Palestinians find it easy now to ignore politicians when they talk about peace, because they have heard it so many times before. The years of violence have also worn down Israelis. Many who used to think a Palestinian state would make their lives safer and more secure now think it would turn into Greater Hamastan - a bigger version of Gaza and an easier place to use as a base for launching rockets into the heart of Israel. More than vigour Even those who still have some hope that the two-state solution is possible and desirable believe that the next few years are the last possible opportunity to make it happen. “ Mrs Clinton's words have been almost indistinguishable from those of her predecessor Condoleezza Rice ” Mrs Clinton hinted at that herself. She said that time was of the essence, and that the Obama administration was going to work vigorously to get the two sides to make an agreement. It will take more than vigour. The Israeli Prime Minister designate, Benjamin Netanyahu gets his core support from parties who reject the idea of a Palestinian state. If they dominate his governing coalition - when and if it is formed - then a collision with Washington looks inevitable, if President Obama and Secretary Clinton are as keen as they say on two states. For this to work, the Americans are going to have to persuade the Israelis that their security will be enhanced, not jeopardised. In the current climate that will be difficult. Paying lip-service? The Americans will also have to show Palestinians that they are prepared to lean on their Israeli friends. Pressure on Palestinians costs nothing for American politicians. In fact its absence can lose them votes. “ The decisions taken by Mr Bush made the divisions broader and deeper ” But pressure on Israel is an entirely different matter, and it will be necessary if Israel is to stop expanding Jewish settlements in the occupied territories and is to contemplate ever removing some of them. In her public statements while she has been here Mrs Clinton's words have been almost indistinguishable from those of her predecessor Condoleezza Rice. Both women called for peace and for a state called Palestine alongside Israel, and both said they would work to make it a reality. By the time Secretary Rice left office the vision looked as distant as ever. The difference between them hinges on the determination of their bosses. Former President George W Bush always seemed to be paying lip-service to the project. What Palestinians and Israelis do not know yet is whether President Obama will be different. His intentions seem clear, but he has a very crowded and complicated agenda. In the Middle East alone, what he does with the Israelis and the Palestinians will be shaped by what he also wants to do across the Arab and Muslim countries of the world. And the fault lines in the small area that makes up Israel, the West Bank and Gaza have a habit of producing challenges that demand action. The decisions taken by Mr Bush made the divisions broader and deeper. It will be clear soon enough whether President Obama has what it takes to bridge the gaps, and even close a few of them. [zamanku] BBC NEWS; Billions pledged to rebuild Gaza
Billions pledged to rebuild Gaza International donors have pledged almost $4.5bn (£3.2bn) in aid to the Palestinians, chiefly to rebuild Gaza after Israel's recent offensive. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Washington would donate $900m, and vigorously seek to advance peace. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas told a summit in Egypt cash was insufficient without a political solution. Israel, which has been fighting Gaza militants, refuses to allow building materials into Gaza for reconstruction. As well as the $900m promised by the US, Saudi Arabia pledged $1bn (£703m) for Gaza. Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit says the total of $4.48bn from about 70 countries was beyond of our expectations. The Palestinian Authority had requested only $2.8bn (£2bn). Mrs Clinton told the conference in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh: Our response to today's crisis in Gaza cannot be separated from our broader efforts to achieve a comprehensive peace. During her first visit to the Middle East as top US diplomat, she said the aim of the aid was to foster conditions in which a Palestinian state can be fully realised. Some 1,300 Palestinians, of whom 412 were children, were killed and thousands of homes and businesses destroyed in December and January as Israel tried to bring an end to cross-border rocket attacks by Palestinian militants. 'Visible signs' Hamas, which controls Gaza but is regarded by both the US and the EU as a terrorist organisation, was not invited to attend the one-day conference. “ Development efforts will remain insufficient, powerless and threatened in the absence of a political settlement ” Mahmoud Abbas The movement welcomed efforts to rebuild Gaza but said it should have been asked to take part. Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum also told the BBC that donors had politicised aid by handing it to Mr Abbas's Palestinian Authority. Mr Abbas said that while all the support was appreciated, we insist on the pressing need to achieve substantial progress towards a just settlement [of the conflict with Israel]. The reconstruction and development efforts will remain insufficient, powerless and threatened in the absence of a political settlement, he said at the conference. British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said that visible signs of progress in the West Bank and Gaza were vital. He added that Palestinians needed a single government across the occupied territories - a direct appeal for rival Palestinian factions to put aside their differences. French President Nicolas Sarkozy, for his part, urged Hamas to engage resolutely in searching for a political solution and engage in a dialogue with Israel. Aid flows Raising money for Gaza is the easy part, the BBC's Christian Fraser in Egypt says. GAZA DESTRUCTION * 14,000 homes * 219 factories * 240 schools UNDP estimates The real business of the conference is the practicalities of how to get it to the people who need it most, he adds. All but essential supplies are still subject to Israeli blockades at the crossing points into Gaza. Building and raw materials deemed by Israel to be useful to militants as well as civilians have been banned. Aid workers say items turned away at the border have included macaroni, lentils, paper and school books. Mr Ban described the situation at the crossings as intolerable. Aid workers do not have access. Essential commodities cannot get in. Our first and indispensable goal, therefore, is open crossings, he told delegates. But he said it was also essential to ensure that illegal weapons were prevented from being allowed to enter Gaza. Donor countries as well as Israel, which did not attend the conference, have stressed that they do not want aid to end up in the hands of Hamas. Like the international community, Israel does not want to see support to Hamas, Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said. We want to see support for the people of Gaza. The Palestinian Authority has proposed that all aid to Gaza should be channelled through itself. UPDATED ON: Wednesday, March 04, 2009 13:25 Mecca time, 10:25 GMT News Middle East Iran: US on wrong path over Israel Relations between the US and Iran have been strained for years [EPA]Iran's supreme leader, has said that Barack Obama, the US president, is pursuing the same wrong path as George Bush, his predecessor, in supporting Israel. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei made his comments on Wednesday at the beginning of a two-day summit in support of Gaza and the Palestinians, held in Tehran. Even the new president of the United States who came to power with the motto of changing the Bush administration's policies talks about unconditional commitment to secure Israel, Khamenei said. This is defending terrorism by a government. Khamenei also said that resistance was the only way to save Palestine and called for the Israeli leaders behind for the recent assault on Gaza to be put on trial. 'Zionist criminals' The political and military leaders of the occupying regime that played the role in the disaster of Gaza must be put on trial. This is the first step that should be taken, Khamenei told the conference. The only way to save Palestine is resistance. Support and help to Palestinians is a mandatory duty of all Muslims. I now tell all Muslim brothers and sisters to join forces and break the immunity of the Zionist criminals. Khamenei's comments are likely to disappoint the new US administration, which has indicated it is keen to break with its predecessor and engage Iran if Tehran will unclench its fist. Final say Obama has suggested that he would be prepared to engage Iran on a range of issues, including the country's nuclear ambitions. Khamenei, who has the final say on all policy in Iran, has so far not directly addressed the issue of Obama's overtures but has in the past said US governments could not be trusted. The US has long called on Iran to end its support for organisations like Lebanon's Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas faction, both of which Washington considers terrorist organisations. guardian.co.uk home Hillary Clinton urged to put pressure on Israel over settlements US secretary of state due to hold talks with Palestinian leaders in occupied West Bank * Rory McCarthy in Jerusalem * guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 4 March 2009 09.02 GMT Hillary Clinton will meet Palestinian leaders. Photograph: Associated Press Hillary Clinton was today due to meet Palestinian leaders in the occupied West Bank, where she will be asked to put pressure on Israel to stop its settlement expansion. On her first trip to the Palestinian territories as the US secretary of state, Clinton will meet the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, and the prime minister, Salam Fayyad. Speaking in Jerusalem yesterday, Clinton said the creation of an independent Palestinian state was now inescapable. However, Palestinian leaders say the continued expansion of Jewish settlements across east Jerusalem and the West Bank make it increasingly difficult for that state to be established. The main point is that the Israeli government needs to accept the two-state solution and ... stop settlement expansion, Saeb Erekat, the chief Palestinian negotiator, said. Although Abbas has held peace talks with Israeli leaders since late 2007, he has little to show for it. On Monday, the Israeli group Peace Now reported that the Israeli housing ministry was planning to build at least 73,000 housing units in West Bank settlements. The organisation said 15,000 units had already been approved and another 58,000 were awaiting approval. Almost 500,000 settlers now live in east Jerusalem and the West Bank. All settlements are illegal under international law. The Palestinians will ask Clinton to put pressure on Israel to open its crossings into Gaza to allow in materials for rebuilding after the recent offensive. We want the US to help us open the passages to get material for reconstruction into Gaza, Erekat said. Reports in the Israeli press today said that, in a meeting yesterday, Clinton had pressed the Israeli defence minister, Ehud Barak, to allow more aid into Gaza. Clinton said the US would send two senior officials to Syria for preliminary conversations, an apparent sign of a new softening of US policy. US officials said Jeffrey Feltman, the state department's leading Middle East diplomat, would travel to Damascus along with Dan Shapiro, of the White House's national security council. Last week, Feltman held talks lasting for almost two hours with the Syrian ambassador to Washington – the highest-level contact between the countries since the start of the Obama government. Washington recalled its ambassador to Damascus in 2005 after the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri in Beirut. Obama's administration has been reviewing its policy towards Syria and is considering whether to send an ambassador again. At a conference to raise aid for the Palestinians, held in Egypt on Monday, Clinton shook hands and spoke briefly with the Syrian foreign minister, Walid al-Moallem. Clinton's announcement came after she met the Israeli foreign minister, Tzipi Livni. She also met the Israeli president, Shimon Peres, the opposition leader and probable next prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, and the current prime minister, Ehud Olmert. Clinton has said she wants to pursue peace between Israel and the Arab world on many fronts, suggesting she might encourage Israel and Syria to talk. Some Israeli figures believe an agreement with Syria might be easier to achieve than a peace deal with the Palestinians. However, Netanyahu has appeared to rule out negotiations with Syria by refusing to give up the Golan Heights, which Israel captured in 1967. Netanyahu – who is likely to lead a narrow, rightwing government – has also stopped short of endorsing a two-state solution to end the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, which may put his government at odds with the US administration. Clinton said a two-state deal was in Israel's best interests. The United States will be vigorously engaged in the pursuit of a two-state solution every step of the way, she said. The inevitability of working toward a two-state solution is inescapable. 17 Feb 2009: * guardian.co.uk © Guardian News and Media Limited 2009 Go to: --- Jusfiq Hadjar gelar Sutan Maradjo Lelo Allah yang disembah orang Islam tipikal dan yang digambarkan oleh al-Mushaf itu dungu, buas, kejam, keji, ganas, zalim lagi biadab hanyalah Allah fiktif.

CNN.com Powered by Click Here to Print SAVE THIS | EMAIL THIS | Close U.S. on Palestinian government: Hamas is sticking point * Story Highlights * Clinton: U.S. at the moment couldn't work with unity government including Hamas * Hamas would have to recognize Israel, renounce violence, Clinton says * U.S. secretary of state to meet with Palestinian Authority leaders in West Bank By Jill Dougherty CNN Foreign Affairs Correspondent JERUSALEM (CNN) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday ruled out working with any Palestinian unity government that includes Hamas if Hamas does not agree to recognize Israel. In the absence of Hamas agreeing to the principles that have been adopted by such a broad range of international actors, I don't see that we or they -- or anyone -- could deal with Hamas, Clinton said in an interview with CNN. The interview came on the eve of Clinton's visit to the West Bank for meetings with Palestinian Authority leaders. Clinton said Hamas must do what the Palestine Liberation Organization has done, which is comply with the principles set out by the Quartet -- the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations -- and adopted by the Arab League: Renounce violence, recognize Israel and agree to abide by prior PLO commitments. Asked by CNN whether that means a public announcement by Hamas, the secretary said, Well, the PLO did that, and I think no less can be expected of Hamas which is, obviously, not only a terrorist group but is increasingly a client of Iran. The PLO is an umbrella group that includes the Fatah Party of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. The PLO recognized the state of Israel in 1993. The interview was conducted a short time after Clinton met with Israeli Prime-Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu, who does not support an independent Palestinian state, the bedrock of U.S. policy. Asked whether the United States could effectively work with Netanyahu anyway, Clinton said, The two-state solution is the inevitable, inescapable outcome of any effort. It is hard to imagine what other positive outcome could be arrived at. The United States, she added, will present its view to the Israeli government when it is formed but the future of the Israeli people is up to the democratically elected government of Israel. Tuesday, in another sign of thawing relations with Syria, Clinton announced that she is sending two envoys to Damascus. Asked what the ultimate aim is, Clinton said, We're not jumping to any conclusions, we're not using any adjectives to describe this. It's in the course of diplomatic outreach. Clinton added that the United States has a long list of concerns we have about Syrian behavior. There is worry in Israel over the United States' willingness to engage with Iran, but Clinton said any steps that the United States takes [with Iran] will be only after we have determined that we have a broad base of understanding amongst a large group of nations who share our concern about Iran. U.S. President Barack Obama has said the United States is looking for opportunities for face to face dialogue with Iran, though he has deep concerns about the actions of Iran's leaders. The United States, Israel and other nations have raised concerns about Iran's nuclear program, which Iran insists is only for peaceful purposes. Iran tested its first nuclear power plant last week using dummy fuel rods. Iranian officials said the next test will use enriched uranium, but it's not clear when the test will be held or when the facility will be fully operational. Engagement, of whatever nature, is not being done just for the sake of engaging Iran, Clinton said. What we are looking for is a way to end Iran's nuclear program, end Iran's sponsorship of terrorism, of groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, [and] an end to Iran's actions in a negative or adversarial way with its neighbors. ... There is a lot that Iran is doing which is deeply concerning to people in the region and beyond. [zamanku] (The Independent): Mark Steel: So Karl Marx was right after all
Mark Steel: So Karl Marx was right after all Maybe the Mail will be yelling, ‘Smash the bosses, get the worker’s Mail’ Wednesday, 4 March 2009 The sudden change is disconcerting. For years I might suggest society would be improved if we sacked these vastly overpaid bankers, and the response would be some variety of Here he goes again. Now if you say the same thing the response is SACK them? I'll tell you what we should do, we should cover them in marmalade and lock them in a greenhouse full of wasps, then scour the stings with a Brillo pad. Then prick them with hedgehog spikes, smear them with fish paste and dip them in Sydney Harbour, then glue them to a pig and send them into an al-Qa'ida training camp with a letter announcing they're a work of art, never mind sack them. Even the Daily Mail exclaimed on its front page, I'm keeping every penny in outrage at Fred Goodwin's pension. Maybe the paper is planning a change of direction, and will be sold in shopping precincts by left-wing groups, yelling SMASH the bosses, get the WORKER'S Mail, for suburban fashion tips, 20 ways to cook a parsnip and an all-out GENERAL strike. Even Karl Marx himself is in vogue. Most papers have had articles about him in their business sections, commending his analysis of booms and slumps, and he was on the front page of The Times. Soon a Times editorial will begin: As the global downturn gathers pace, perhaps one economic remedy to be considered by our esteemed guardians is a violent workers' revolution as envisaged by Mister Karl Marx, and championed with consummate aplomb on page 32 by William Rees-Mogg. A passage from Marx about the insatiable greed of bankers was quoted on Radio 2 one morning by Terry Wogan. For all I know he's doing it every day now, muttering: Now here's a jolly old lesson from the old boy Karl – about those rascals of the bourgeoisie, it seems they've been robbing us blind all along and no mistake, so let's overthrow the nitwits for a bit of mischief. In the meantime this is 'Surrey with the Fringe on Top'. Sales of Marx's Capital are at an all-time high, and this can't just be due to the current rage against characters such as Fred Goodwin and his merry bonus. It must also be because Marx fathomed that under capitalism, boom and slump would remain a perpetual cycle, as opposed to those such as Gordon Brown, who said once an hour for five years, We have abolished boom and bust, a theory which is now in need of a minor tweak. But Marx might be surprised at the way he usually appears in these articles, as if he was mostly an analyst, a Robert Peston of his day. As a professional analyst, Marx would have been a disaster. For example, one year after Capital was due, his publishers asked him when it would arrive and he wrote back: You'll be pleased to know I have begun the actual writing. But he might also dispute the idea attributed to him, that slumps make the collapse of capitalism inevitable. Because while he said SLUMPS were inevitable, he also said the outcome wasn't inevitable at all, but depended on whether the poor allow the rich to make them pay for it. Which is to say an abridged version of the 1,100 pages of Capital would go: I'll tell you what we should do, spray them with wildebeest odour and make them run through the Serengeti, with a commentary by Attenborough, then...

CNN.com Canada's Harper doubts Afghan insurgency can be defeated * Story Highlights * Prime Minister Stephen Harper: We are not going to ever defeat the insurgency * Canada's parliament has voted to pull its troops from Afghanistan by 2011 * Harper says he supports President Obama's renewed commitment to Afghanistan * But Harper says he won't recommit more troops until there's a clear plan for leaving (CNN) -- U.S. and NATO forces are engaged in a futile war against the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan, Canada's prime minister said. We are not going to ever defeat the insurgency, Stephen Harper told CNN's Fareed Zakaria in an interview that aired Sunday. Afghanistan has probably had -- my reading of Afghanistan history -- it's probably had an insurgency forever, of some kind. Harper's blunt assessment comes as nearly 2,800 Canadian forces are fighting in Afghanistan. The country's parliament has voted to pull them out by 2011. Harper spoke with Zakaria last week after a visit by President Obama, who made Canada his first foreign trip since taking office in January. Obama has said Afghanistan is the central front to the U.S.-led war on terror. The Pentagon is in the process of sending an additional 17,000 troops to Afghanistan, bringing the total there to 55,000. Harper told CNN that he supports Obama's renewed commitment to Afghanistan but said he would not recommit any more Canadian troops until there is a clear plan for leaving Afghanistan. What has to happen in Afghanistan is, we have to have an Afghan government that is capable of managing that insurgency and improving its own governance, Harper said. If President Obama wants anybody to do more, I would ask very hard questions about what is the strategy for success and for an eventual departure. [zamanku] CNN: Israel's Olmert may face corruption charges
CNN.com Israel's Olmert may face corruption charges * Story Highlights * Attorney General Menachem Mazuz says Olmert committed fraud * Israeli prime minister allegedly took cash from U.S. businessman * Olmert says money was legitimate campaign funding JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Israel's attorney general says he is considering charging Prime Minister Ehud Olmert with corruption over allegations he illegally received funds from an American businessmen. Attorney General Menachem Mazuz says Olmert committed fraud and breached confidences when he allegedly used his then-position as mayor of Jerusalem to help businessman Morris Talansky in 2006. Olmert says the money he received was legal campaign funding. Mazuz will decide whether to indict Olmert after the prime minister has had a chance to refute the charges in a hearing before the attorney general. No date has been set for that meeting. Mazuz ordered an investigation in April 2008 into the relationship between Olmert and Talansky. Talansky gave a colorful testimony last year, telling of various times that he handed Olmert envelopes stuffed with cash. The testimony badly damaged the already unpopular Olmert. Israeli police recommended in September that Olmert be charged with corruption over the Talansky case and the Rishon Tours affair, in which Olmert was accused of pocketing money for official travels. A hearing in the Rishon Tours case is set for April. Olmert announced days after the police recommendation that he would resign as head of the Kadima party. Israelis went to the polls last month and Olmert is now caretaker prime minister until a new government is formed. -- CNN's Shira Medding contributed to this report. [zamanku] Aljazeera: Clinton set to meet Israeli leaders
UPDATED ON: Tuesday, March 03, 2009 09:03 Mecca time, 06:03 GMT News Middle East Clinton set to meet Israeli leaders Clinton looks set to maintain Washington's tough line against the Palestinian faction Hamas [AFP]Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, is set to meet Israeli leaders in Jerusalem, with the shaky ceasefire in Gaza high on her agenda. She is due to meet on Tuesday Shimon Peres, Israel's president, and Benyamin Netanyahu, the prime minister-designate who is trying to put together a government. Clinton is also set to meet Tzipi Livni, the outgoing foreign minister and leader of Kadima who led the Israeli team in recent negotiations with the Palestinians. Livni has rejected overtures from Netanyahu to form a coalition government and is set to take her party into the opposition. Hopes are high for Clinton after the administration of George Bush, the former US president, was criticised for coming to Arab-Israeli peacemaking only in the final stages of his presidency. 'Difficult and complex' Barack Obama, the US president, has said the issue will be a priority for his administration and Clinton said she would push on many fronts early on. This is a very difficult and complex set of issues, she said before her arrival in Jerusalem on Monday. Israel's continued settlement building has strained the peace process [AFP] Peace talks brokered by her husband Bill Clinton, a former president, broke down in 2000, his final year of his presidency. Talks between Israel and the Palestinians were relaunched at a US-sponsored conference in Annapolis, Maryland, in November 2007, but the talks were halted after Israel's military offensive on Gaza. Clinton arrived in Israel from an international donors' conference in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, where countries pledged $5bn to help rebuild Gaza following Israel's war on the territory. The US pledged $900m at the conference, but Clinton maintained Washington's tough line against Hamas, saying the money would be channelled through the Palestinian Authority rather than being paid to Hamas, which runs Gaza. Peace problems At the conference, Arab and European ministers pressed Clinton to push the Israelis to open up border crossings into Gaza and stop Jewish settlement activity. Israel's blockade of the territory prevents supplies, including construction materials, from crossing into Gaza. Continued settlement building by Israel has also strained the wider peace process and Netanyahu appears unlikely to put an end to the policy. Peace Now, the Israeli anti-settlement group, has said the government is planning to build 73,000 new homes in the occupied West Bank. The Israeli government says only a small number of the housing plans have been officially approved, but Peace Now claims that 15,000 units have been granted approval and that nearly 9,000 have already been built. Asked whether she would raise the issues such as settlement building and the Gaza blockade, Clinton sidestepped the question. Shaky truce An unsteady ceasefire has been in place between Israel and Hamas since January, but Israel has carried out a number of air raid on the Hamas-run territory and Palestinian fighters have also fired rockets into southern Israel. Before arriving in Jerusalem, Clinton said she was troubled by the continuing rocket attacks and reiterated that Israel had a right to defend itself, a message she will likely stress again publicly on Tuesday. Clinton will visit the West Bank on Wednesday to meet Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, and Salam Fayyad, the Palestinian prime minister. She also plans to address students at a school there. [zamanku] BBC NEWS: Vatican hosts Darwin conference
Vatican hosts Darwin conference By David Willey BBC News, Rome The Vatican is sponsoring a five day conference to mark the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin's Origin of Species. [zamanku] Aljazeera: Clinton voices support for Israel
UPDATED ON: Tuesday, March 03, 2009 14:43 Mecca time, 11:43 GMT News Middle East Clinton voices support for Israel Clinton, left, arrived in Jerusalem from a Gaza donors' conference in Egypt [AFP]Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, has said that Washington is committed to Israel's security has demanded and end to Palestinian rocket fire from the Gaza Strip. The former first lady made the remarks as she visited Israeli leaders on Tuesday as part of her first visit to the Middle East since joining the administration of Barack Obama, the US president. It is important that the United States always underscore our unshakeable durable and fundamental support for the state of Israel, she said after holding talks with Shimon Peres, the Israeli president, on Tuesday. However, she also set Washington on course for a possible disagreement with Benyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister-designate, who has spoken of Palestinian self-government but avoided conceding a two-state solution. Palestinian state Clinton, who arrived in Jerusalem after attending a donors' conference aimed at addressing the needs of the Gaza Strip after Israel's 22-day assault, said that Obama believed a separate Palestinian state was fundamental for achieving peace. In depth Analysis and features from after the war During the conference, I emphasised President Obama's and my commitment to working to achieve a two-state solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians and our support for the Palestinian Authority, she said. Obama has said that an Arab-Israeli peace deal will be it will be a priority during his presidency, but talks between Israeli officials and the Palestinians have stalled over violence, settlement-building and disputes over other core issues such as the future of Jerusalem and Palestinian refugees. The West-Bank Palestinian Authority finally suspended the negotiations after Israel launched it devastating offensive on Gaza, with a stated aim on ending Palestinian rocket fire into the south of the country. Rocket attacks Clinton, who is due to meet Netanyahu later on Tuesday, defended Israel's right to respond to rocket and mortar attacks. The continuing rocket attacks against Israel must cease, she said. There is no doubt that any nation, including Israel, cannot stand idly by while its territory and people are subjected to rocket attacks. The US continues to take a tough line against Hamas, which effectively controls the Gaza Strip. At the donor's conference in Egypt on Monday, Clinton pledged $900m to rebuild Gaza but maintained said the money would be channelled through the Palestinian Authority rather than being paid to Hamas. [zamanku] Aljazeera: Donors discuss rebuilding Gaza
UPDATED ON: Monday, March 02, 2009 11:21 Mecca time, 08:21 GMT News Middle East Donors discuss rebuilding Gaza Conditions will be attached to the $300m Hillary Clinton is set to hand over for Gaza [AFP]International donors meeting in Egypt are expected to pledge billions of dollars to rebuild the Gaza Strip after it was battered during Israel's 22-day offensive earlier this year. Ahead of Tuesday's conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, the US state department announced that Washington would contribute $300m to meet urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza. Up to 75 countries and international organisations are being asked to fund a $2.8bn reconstruction plan designed by Salam Fayyad, the Palestinian prime minister, who wants a large part of the money to be channelled through the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority. It remains unclear though how the planned reconstruction of Gaza will be undertaken. The territory is controlled by Hamas and Israel has said it will refuse to approve projects that could benefit the group. Hamas took full control of Gaza in June 2007 after driving out security forces loyal to Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian Authority president and leader of the rival Fatah group. Israel's blockade of the territory continues to prevent supplies, including construction materials, from crossing into Gaza. Hamas, which has not been invited to the conference in Egypt and is labelled a terrorist group by the US and the EU, has prepared its own reconstruction plan. Fawzi Barhoum, a Hamas official, said that he welcomed efforts to address the needs of the Gazans. We hope this conference ... will be fruitful in making positive steps, quickly and effectively, to rebuild Gaza without politicisation and preconditions that could complicate or create obstacles, he said. 'Humanitarian concern' Marc Gopin, from the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University, told Al Jazeera that the donors' conference was an attempt to demonstrate humanitarian concern. In depth Analysis and features from Gaza after the war But, he said, there was no real addressing of the political fallout in the long run, as to whether there's going to be reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas and whether in fact this aid can really ever get in. They can't even get in humanitarian aid at this point because the [Israeli] blockade is so severe. Hillary Clinton, on her first visit to the Middle East since becoming the US secretary of state, said on Friday that the US aid, which will include another $600m for the Palestinian Authority, would depend on how well the Palestinians meet conditions imposed by the so-called Quartet of the United States, the European Union, the United Nations and Russia. I will be announcing a commitment to a significant aid package, but it will only be spent if we determine that our goals can be furthered rather than undermined or subverted, she told Voice of America radio. Robert Wood, a spokesman for the US state department, said the $300m would be funnelled through the UN and other organisations. Hamas is not getting any of this money, he told reporters. 'More of the same' Saree Makdisi, the author of Palestine Inside Out: An Everyday Occupation, told Al Jazeera that it sure looks like more of the same US policy and that there was no difference between Clinton's stance and that of Condoleezza Rice, her predecessor. The most surprising thing isn't that there's no difference, it's that there's no difference in spite of the fact that the [incoming] Israeli government has taken an even more belligerent stand against the Palestinians and on honouring international law, he said. More than 1,300 Palestinians, including women and children, died during the war on Gaza, which Israel launched with the stated aim of preventing rocket fire from fighters based in the coastal territory. At least 13 Israelis, three of them civilians, were also killed. However, rocket fire has continued and Ehud Olmert, the outgoing Israeli prime minister, on Sunday vowed a painful response if the attacks on southern Israel did not stop. The rockets will be answered with a painful, harsh, strong and uncompromising response from the security forces, he said at the start of a weekly cabinet meeting. [zamanku] BBC NEWS: Cash alone 'will not mend Gaza'
BBC NEWS Cash alone 'will not mend Gaza' Political action as well as funding is needed to resolve the crisis facing Gaza, an international donors' conference in Egypt has been told. The Palestinians have asked for $2.8bn (£2bn) to help rebuild the enclave after Israel's three-week offensive. But Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas told the summit cash was insufficient without a political solution. His comments were echoed by new US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who pledged $900m toward the effort. Our response to today's crisis in Gaza cannot be separated from our broader efforts to achieve a comprehensive peace, Mrs Clinton told the conference, in her first visit to the Middle East as America's top diplomat. She said the aim of the aid was to foster conditions in which a Palestinian state can be fully realised. Some 1,300 Palestinians, of whom 412 were children, were killed and thousands of homes and businesses destroyed in December and January as Israel tried to bring an end to cross-border rocket attacks by Palestinian militants. Hamas, which controls Gaza but is regarded by both the US and the EU as a terrorist organisation, was not invited to attend the one-day conference at Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. 'One viable future' Donations are expected to exceed the Palestinians' request for $2.8bn (£2bn). As well as Mrs Clinton's $900m, Saudi Arabia is expected to reaffirm its promised $1bn (£703m) for Gaza. “ The situation at the border crossings is intolerable ” Ban Ki-moon UN Secretary General Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said that while all the support was appreciated, we insist on the pressing need to achieve substantial progress towards a just settlement [of the conflict with Israel]. We are all conscious that the reconstruction and development efforts will remain insufficient, powerless and threatened in the absence of a political settlement, he said at the conference. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said now was the time to think freshly, to lead boldly. There is only one viable future: Palestinians and Israelis living side by side in peace and security, he told delegates. French President Nicolas Sarkozy urged responsible Palestinians to seek peace with Israel. You must admit that there is no other road to the creation of a Palestinian state but to engage resolutely in searching for a political solution and engage in a dialogue with Israel, he said in a message to Hamas. Aid flows Raising money for Gaza is the easy part, the BBC's Christian Fraser in Egypt says. GAZA DESTRUCTION # 14,000 homes # 219 factories # 240 schools UNDP estimates The real business of the conference is the practicalities of how to get it to the people who need it most, he adds. All but essential supplies are still subject to Israeli blockades at the crossing points into Gaza. Building and raw materials deemed by Israel to be useful to militants as well as civilians have been banned. Aid workers say products turned away at the border have included macaroni, lentils, paper and school books. The Palestinian Authority has proposed that all aid to Gaza is channelled through itself. Although Israel and Western negotiators refuse to speak to Hamas, UN agencies working in Gaza do co-ordinate with the Hamas government. UN relief agency Unrwa says it has contacts with Hamas even at ministerial level, but strictly on technical issues related to the delivery of its humanitarian services in line with wider UN policy. [zamanku] Aljazeera: Gaza rockets target Israeli town
Betapapun kecilnya roket yang ditembakkan oleh orang Palestina ini, tindakan ini tetap saja biadab sifatnya Dan tidak menyelesaikan masalah apapun juga. Sebaliknya masah. . UPDATED ON: Saturday, February 28, 2009 12:46 Mecca time, 09:46 GMT News Middle East Gaza rockets target Israeli town Mediation talks between Israel and Gaza have shown little sign of progress [AFP]Palestinian fighters in the Gaza Strip have fired five rockets at Israel, one of which hit a school, according to Israeli officials. Some of the rockets landed close to the Israeli coastal city of Ashkelon, officials said, straining a fragile ceasefire declared both by Israel and Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip. There were no casualties reported in the rocket attacks. The ceasefire, declared on January 18, ended Israel's three-week military assault in Gaza which killed at least 1,300 Palestinians and 13 Israelis. Since the end of Israel's Gaza offensive, Palestinian fighters have fired more than 100 rockets and mortar rounds at Israel. Israel has also carried out several air raids targeting alleged fighters, weapons caches and smuggling tunnels beneath the Gaza-Egypt border. Egypt has been struggling to mediate a more permanent ceasefire deal between the two sides in recent weeks, but the talks have shown little sign of progress. Separately, Al Jazeera has learnt that Mussa Abu Marzuk, Hamas's second-in-command who lives in exile in Syria, entered the Gaza Strip via the Rafa crossing from Egypt on Friday. Abu Marzuk, one of the main founders of Hamas in the 1980s, had been attending reconciliation talks with other Palestinian factions in Egypt. An Egyptian terminal official confirmed the visit, while Hamas would neither confirm nor deny that Abu Marzuk had entered the Palestinian territory. [zamanku] Aljazeera: Secret' Taliban talks under way
UPDATED ON: Friday, February 27, 2009 01:11 Mecca time, 22:11 GMT News CENTRAL/S. ASIA 'Secret' Taliban talks under way Talks centre around the return to Afghanistan of Gulbaldin Hekmatyar, the former prime minister Western officials, the Afghan government and Taliban-linked mediators have been engaged in secret negotiations to bring elements of the group into Afghanistan's political process, Al Jazeera has learned. The talks, which have been taking place in Dubai, London and Afghanistan since the beginning of the year, have proposed the return of Gulbaldin Hekmatyar, the former Afghan prime minister, who has been in hiding for seven years, to Afghanistan. Hekmatyar is the leader of the Hezb-i-Islami forces, a faction of Afghanistan's Hezb-i-Islami party, and is purported to be in the northwest tribal region of Pakistan. His forces fight alongside the Taliban and are considered a terrorist organisation by the United States forces in Afghanistan. Asylum offer According to information revealed to Al Jazeera, Hekmatyar would be offered asylum in Saudi Arabia, after which he would be allowed to return to Afghanistan with immunity from prosecution. The British government is backing that element of the deal, sources told Al Jazeera. In depth Read Al Jazeera's special correspondence from Afghanistan James Bays, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Kabul, said: The plan is to widen these talks and to bring in elements of the Taliban. It is not clear whether the secret negotiations were aimed at separating Hekmatyar's Taliban-linked faction from the group, or whether to encourage some elements of the Taliban to join the political process. Michael Griffen, an Afghanistan expert, told Al Jazeera: If Hekmatyar is in this only to trade for his own survival and immunity from prosecution and eventual retirement, that doesn't provide for his followers. If they are not included in the deal, they will follow the Taliban. Patricia Degennaro, a professor at the Centre for Global Affairs at New York University, told Al Jazeera that talks were a central part of ending the conflict. It's long overdue that there is some kind of jirga or regional council in Afghanistan, where some of these parties who have had grievances over the years are brought together. They need to start talking to each other and move forward so people can start putting their arms down. Divide and rule Mullah Mottawakil, a former Taliban foreign minister, said the talks would fail if the plan was to split the Taliban. It will not benefit anyone if he [Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president] brings one part of the Taliban into the government, and leaves the other part behind. It will not finish the war. Ghairat Baheer, one of Hektmatyar's two son-in-laws, released from the US prison at Bagram airbase in Afghanistan in May last year after six years in custody, is involved in the process, according to reports. Baheer, an ambassador to Pakistan in the 1990s, was given a visa to travel to London by British authorities last month. Humayun Jarir, a Kabul-based politician and son-in-law of Hekmatyar, is also said have been in involved in the talks. Karzai has long proposed holding talks with the Taliban. Should secret talks be taking place without his knowledge, it is likely to undermine him and further sour relations between the US and Afghanistan. Wider talks Al Jazeera has also learned this is not the first time in recent months that talks between the Afghan government and Taliban representatives have been attempted. Humayun Jarir, Hekmatyar's son-in-law is purported to be involved in the talks Last year, Ahmed Jan, an intermediary for the Taliban and tribal elder from Helmand province, was sent on behalf of the Taliban to Kabul for talks with the Afghan government, our correspondent said. Jan was arrested after US officials discovered talks were to take place, and is now being held in US custody at Bagram, an Afghan political figure told Al Jazeera. With the arrival in Kabul last month of Richard Holbrooke, the US envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan of the new administration of Barack Obama, the US president, resistance to talks with the Taliban may change. Ahmadshah Ahmadzai, another former Afghan prime minister, said trying to bring all Afghan parties – including Mullah Omar, the Taliban leader - to the negotiating table was the only option. If Mullah Omar agrees [to talks] and those around him do - this is the real Taliban faction - then they can bring peace. Degennaro said: It's really important to at least test the waters and see what's happening, and what response we're going to get, which is probably what they're doing right now. [zamanku] BBC NEWS: Fossils fill gap in human lineage
Masih ada manusia dungu yang percaya Adam itu diciptakan oleh Tuhan yang tidak berbukti ada itu... --- Fossils fill gap in human lineage By Paul Rincon BBC News science reporter Fossil hunters have found remains of a probable direct ancestor of humans that lived more than four million years ago. The specimens of this ancient creature are helping bridge a long gap during a crucial phase of human evolution. Professor Tim White of the University of California, Berkeley, and colleagues unearthed the cache of fossils in the Middle Awash region of Ethiopia. They describe the finds, which belong to the species Australopithecus anamensis , in the journal Nature. Australopithecus is an important ancient genus of humanlike creatures, or hominids. “ I think you could argue...what we're monitoring here is the genesis of that second stage of human evolution - the genesis of Australopithecus ” Tim White, UC Berkeley Our own genus, Homo , is widely thought to have evolved from this group. So the relationship of Australopithecus to even earlier bipedal hominids is crucial to understanding where we all ultimately come from. When placed together with other fossils from the same general area of Ethiopia, the 4.1-million-year-old anamensis specimens appear to establish an evolutionary succession between earlier and later species. The fact anamensis is sandwiched between earlier and later hominids is what is really significant about this Ethiopian sequence, Tim White told the BBC News website. Middle man The finds close the gap between a more ancient species known as Ardipithecus ramidus , which is found at 4.4 million years and a later species known as Australopithecus afarensis , which is present in the Middle Awash 3.4 million years ago. Australopithecus anamensis is intermediate between the two not only chronologically but also in terms of its anatomy. The anamensis species is not new, but, say the researchers, this is the first time that these three species have been shown to be time-successive in a single place. One explanation is that one species simply evolved into the other - so-called phyletic evolution. Another possibility is that Australopithecus first emerged as a side branch of Ardipithecus . Under this scheme the mother species would have lived alongside the daughter species for some period of time before the mother species died out. But no overlap between any of the three species has been found in Ethiopia. Mind the gap I think you could argue, fairly, that the circumstantial evidence based on geography and habitat is of one evolving phyletically into the other and what we're monitoring here is the genesis of that second stage of human evolution - the genesis of Australopithecus , White explained. But, he added: We cannot disprove the alternative hypothesis just yet. The new discoveries go some way to bridging the gap between Ardipithecus and Australopithecus , but do not entirely plug it. The gaps don't get entirely filled; you fill a big gap and create two smaller ones, said Professor White. Now we're looking at a gap between 4.4 million and 4.1 million. That's 300,000 years; an awful lot of time when measured on a human timescale, but not that long on a geological one. The fossils represent at least eight individuals and include the largest hominid canine ever found, the earliest known Australopithecus thigh bone as well as hand and foot bones. In the woods The excavation at Asa Issie also uncovered the remains of pigs, monkeys and big cats. The fauna suggest that anamensis was living in a closed, wooded habitat. Australopithecus anamensis had a significantly thicker layer of enamel on its teeth than Ardipithecus , suggesting the later hominid was adapting to eating a more abrasive diet of roots. In many species, this is a fallback food when resources are scarce, but it is not clear what caused the diet shift in this case. The Turkana Basin in Kenya has also yielded Australopithecus anamensis fossils. Australopithecus afarensis was first recognised in the 1970s on the basis of the now famous Lucy skeleton from Hadar, Ethiopia, and footprints preserved in volcanic ash at Laetoli, Tanzania. Tim White, Gen Suwa and Berhane Asfaw discovered the first Ardipithecus ramidus fossils in the 1990s. paul.rincon-inter...@bbc.co.uk Story from BBC NEWS: http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/pr/fr/-/2/hi/science/nature/4900946.stm Published: 2006/04/12 21:34:32 GMT © BBC MMIX --- Jusfiq Hadjar gelar Sutan Maradjo Lelo Allah yang disembah orang Islam tipikal dan yang digambarkan oleh al-Mushaf itu dungu, buas, kejam, keji, ganas, zalim lagi biadab hanyalah Allah fiktif.
[zamanku] BBC NEWS: Earliest 'human footprints' found
Ini jejlas bukan jejak Adam atau Eve... Earliest 'human footprints' found The earliest footprints showing evidence of modern human foot anatomy and gait have been unearthed in Kenya. The 1.5-million-year-old footprints display signs of a pronounced arch and short, aligned toes, in contrast to older footprints. The size and spacing of the Kenyan markings - attributed to Homo erectus - reflect the height, weight, and walking style of modern humans. The findings have been published in the journal Science. The footprints are not the oldest belonging to a member of the human lineage. That title belongs to the 3.7 million-year-old Australopithecus afarensis prints found in Laetoli, Tanzania, in 1978. Those prints, however, showed comparatively flat feet and a significantly higher angle between the big toe and the other toes, representative of a foot still adapted to grasping. Exactly how that more ape-like foot developed into its modern version has remained unclear. The fossil record is distinctly lacking in foot and hand bones, according to lead author Matthew Bennett of Bournemouth University, UK. The reason is that carnivores like to eat hands and feet, Professor Bennett told BBC News. Once the flesh is gone there's a lot of little bones that don't get preserved, so we know very little about the evolution of hands and feet on our ancestors. The footprints were found near Ileret in northern Kenya. The site, on a small hill, is made up of metres of sediment which the researchers carefully cleared away. What they found was two sets of footprints, one five metres deeper than the other, separated by sand, silt, and volcanic ash. The team dated the surrounding sediment by comparing it with well-known radioisotope-dated samples from the region, finding that the two layers of prints were made at least 10,000 years apart. Another critical feature that the series of footprints makes clear is how Homo erectus walked. There is evidence of a heavy landing on the heel with weight transferred along the outer edge of the foot, progressing to the ball of the foot and lifting off with the toes. That's very diagnostic of the modern style of walking, and the Laetoli prints don't give that same character, Professor Bennett said. The finding is a critical clue for mapping out the evolution of modern humans, both in terms of physiology and also how H. erectus fared in its environment. H. erectus was a great leap in evolution, showing increased variety of diet and of habitat, and was the first Homo species to make the journey out of Africa. There's some suggestion out there that Homo erectus was able to scour the landscape for carcasses and meat...and was able to get there very quickly, had longer limbs and was much more efficient in terms of long distance travel, Professor Bennett added. Now we're also saying it had an essentially modern foot anatomy and function, which also adds to that story. [zamanku] SD: Why didn't Darwin discover Mendel's laws?
Orang suka lupa peranaan Mendel ini dalam menjelaskan evolusi. Why didn't Darwin discover Mendel's laws? Published: Friday, February 27, 2009 - 09:28 in Paleontology Archaeology Learn more about: evolution darwin gregor mendel Mendel solved the logic of inheritance in his monastery garden with no more technology than Darwin had in his garden at Down House. So why couldn't Darwin have done it too? A Journal of Biology article argues that Darwin's background, influences and research focus gave him a viewpoint that prevented him from interpreting the evidence that was all around him, even in his own work. Darwin's commitment to quantitative variation as the raw material of evolution meant he could not see the logic of inheritance, argues Jonathan Howard of the University of Cologne, Germany. Quantitative variation was at the heart of Darwin's evolution, and quantitative variation is the last place where clean Mendelian inheritance can be seen, says Howard. Darwin boxed himself in, unable to see the laws of inheritance in continuous variation, unable to see the real importance of discontinuous variation where the laws of inheritance could be discerned. Moravian priest and scientist Gregor Mendel (1822 - 1884) studied clear-cut, inherited traits in pea plants, which he grew in the monastery gardens in Brno. Mendel showed that trait inheritance follow simple laws, which were later named after him. Mendel's work was rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century, and laid the foundations for genetics. Mendel had a good understanding of biology, but his understanding of physics, statistics and probability theory were far superior to Darwin's. Darwin's view of biology was greatly influenced by geologist Charles Lyell during and after the 1831-1836 Beagle voyage, leading to Darwin's focus on infinitely tiny differences between individuals giving infinitesimal advantages or disadvantages in survival. For Darwin, selection of these variants over hundreds of thousands of generations was the critical process in evolution. Darwin's book The Different Forms of Flowers on Plants of the Same Species details breeding experiments involving a well-defined unit character, yielding clear data interpretable as 'Mendelian' ratios. But these went unremarked by Darwin, who insisted, because of his belief that only quantitative variation contributed to evolution, that the rules of inheritance were too complex and not ready for definitive analysis. Heredity and variation played central roles in Darwin's development of the theory of evolution by natural selection. His view that variation is caused by random, quasi-physical events outside environmental control, is much as we believe today. But he never freed himself from the incorrect belief that environmentally determined changes could also be inherited, another victim of his focus on quantitative characters, height, weight and so on, which are strongly influenced by environmental effects. This year marks the bicentennial of Darwin's birthday, and 150 years since his book The Origin of Species was first published.

UPDATED ON: Thursday, February 26, 2009 09:38 Mecca time, 06:38 GMT News Middle East Hamas and Fatah meet in Egypt Fatah and Hamas hope to heal a rift that widened since Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007 [AFP]Rival Palestinian Fatah and Hamas groups have held unofficial meetings in Cairo, Egypt's capital, ahead of a reconciliation conference scheduled for Thursday this week. Wednesday's meetings, the latest in a series held in the past few weeks, will help pave the way for national dialogue, Nabil Amr, the Palestinian ambassador in Cairo, said. The two groups agreed to resolve the fate of prisoners held by both sides in a timeline not going beyond the end of the inter-Palestinian dialogue meetings, a joint statement they released said. A certain number of detainees will be freed right at the beginning of the dialogue, said the statement from Azzam al-Ahmad, leader of the Fatah bloc in the Palestinian parliament, and Mahmoud Zahar, a senior Hamas official. Hamas members freed The statement said: Other detainees will be freed successively so that this issue will be totally closed before the end of the national Palestinian dialogue.” Zahar said 80 Hamas members held in the West Bank, which is controlled by Fatah, have been released and that 300 were still being held. A planned unity government by Fatah and Hamas will deal with foreign governments, co-ordinate reconstruction in the Gaza Strip and prepare for Palestinian presidential and legislative elections. Fatah, the secular group headed by Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, and Hamas have long been rivals but their feuding boiled over in June 2007 when Hamas seized control of the Gaza strip. Thursday's conference, which will also bring in other Palestinian factions, stems from Egyptian proposals for a lasting ceasefire following Israel's 23-day onslaught on Gaza. [zamanku] BBC NEWS: Taleban reconciliation 'possible'
Taleban reconciliation 'possible' By Frank Gardner BBC Security Correspondent Reconciliation with the Taleban is possible, says Gulab Mangal, the governor of Afghanistan's troubled Helmand province. But he said it was not possible with the extreme members, who had links to international terrorism. Governor Mangal told the BBC the keys to defeating the Afghan insurgency were reconciliation and better governance. Also, he said, the elimination of the Taleban's sanctuaries that straddle the Afghan-Pakistan border. The energetic and reform-minded Governor Mangal is much favoured by Britain, which has over 8,000 troops deployed to Afghanistan. On a day when news broke of three more British deaths in Helmand province, bringing the total killed since 2001 to 148, he said that coalition soldiers fighting the Taleban were doing it for the sake of the world's humanity. In a reference to al-Qaeda-linked insurgents, he said if Helmand province was not secure, then London would not be either. “ We have proof that the Taleban are forcing farmers to plant opium poppies and punishing them if they refuse ” Governor Mangal He denied recent reports that the Taleban were in control of more than half of his province and insisted that Nato and Afghan security forces were jointly inflicting heavy losses on the Taleban and interrupting the narcotics trade, in which he said they were heavily involved. We have taken serious steps towards the narcotics problem, he told a news conference earlier. Dozens of smugglers have been captured, many heroin facilities have been destroyed and 41 tonnes of drugs have been confiscated. The Taleban and drug dealers are working closely together and we have proof that the Taleban are forcing farmers to plant opium poppies and punishing them if they refuse, he said. The Taleban are even escorting drugs convoys around the country and out of it for export. But this year [because of our efforts] you will see a decrease in poppy production. 'Bailing out' But Governor Mangal did not deny that his government was having to confront serious problems in Helmand, a province which continues to see some of Afghanistan's fiercest fighting. He divided the Taleban into three categories, only two of which he said could be negotiated with. The first was those fighters with international links like al-Qaeda, and these the Afghan government would never reconcile with. The second group, he said, was nationalist jihadis fighting primarily to expel foreign forces from their land, and these he believed could eventually be brought into the government. The third group listed by Governor Mangal was comprised of those Afghans who had joined the insurgency for personal reasons, such as resentment of weak government or abuse at the hands of the authorities; these too, he believed could be reconciled with. As to how long the international coalition would need to stay in Afghanistan, Governor Mangal would not be drawn. But on one point he was clear: the insurgency, he said, could not be defeated unless the Taleban's sanctuaries were eliminated. He likened this to bailing water out of a boat at sea. If there is a hole in the boat and the water is coming in and we are taking it out with a bucket, he said, we will never be able to stop the sea water coming in if we don't plug the hole. [zamanku] BBC NEWS: Fish fossil clue to origin of sex
Penemuan berbagai macam fossil makin mendukung dan sekali gus menyempurnakan teori Darwin... Tapi kreasionis yang dungu-dungu ayak anjing masih tetap saja percaya kepada kibulan Bible atau al-Mushaf... -- Fish fossil clue to origin of sex By Paul Rincon Science reporter, BBC News A fossil fish from Australia was one of the earliest known vertebrates to reproduce by fertilising eggs inside the female, a study suggests. Nature journal says the ancient fish was carrying a 5cm-long embryo. The fertilisation of eggs by sperm outside the mother's body - external fertilisation - is thought to have evolved before copulation. The fossil suggests the fertilisation of eggs inside the female's body evolved sooner than previously thought. These (fish) show some of the earliest evidence for internal reproduction, Zerina Johanson, curator of fossil fish at London's Natural History Museum (NHM), told BBC News. “ Evidence of reproductive biology is extremely rare in the fossil record ” Zerina Johanson, Natural History Museum We expected that these early fishes would show a more primitive type of reproduction, where sperm and eggs combine in the water and embryos develop outside the fish. According to Dr Johanson, the 365 million-year-old specimen shows that the type of advanced fertilisation, taking place inside the mother, was more common among early fishes than previously thought. This discovery is incredibly important because evidence of reproductive biology is extremely rare in the fossil record, she said. Dating to the Upper Devonian Period, the specimen has been bestowed with the scientific name Incisoscutum ritchiei . It belongs to a group of early fish known as placoderms, which were covered in tough armour. Shark comparison This specimen shows a modification of the pelvic fin on its belly. The authors of the Nature paper believe this structure, called a clasper, would have been used by the male to grip the female during mating. A similar organ is seen in modern sharks. The clasper is an intermittent erectile organ that is inserted inside the female to transfer sperm, said co-author Dr John Long, a palaeontologist at Museum Victoria in Australia. In one type of placoderm called the ptyctodonts, this organ is covered in bone and hooked. This new group... has more flexible claspers. In the Nature paper, we're suggesting this is the beginning of erectile male fertilisation, because part of that organ has been taken over by soft cartilage, Dr Long explained. The process of internal fertilisation and giving birth to live young distinguishes some fish and mammals from other animals such as reptiles and amphibians. Dr Johanson thinks this was the main reproductive method for early fish such as placoderms and could have evolved in other fish groups too. 'Sex' was far more common in these primitive prehistoric animals. We used to think that external fertilisation was the earliest form of reproduction but copulation appears to be the main way they reproduced, said Dr Johanson. 'Age of fish' The fish, which has been in the collections of the NHM since the 1980s, was first thought to have died soon after its final meal. The bones were thought to have been those of a smaller fish it had eaten. But research on related fish prompted Dr Johanson and her colleagues to reinterpret the fossil. They came to the conclusion that the last meal was in fact a young fish developing in the womb of its mother. Placoderms are thought to be among the most primitive jawed vertebrates. They were extinct by the end of the Devonian, which is often described as The Age of Fish. Placoderms are right at the base of the vertebrate tree. So they are distantly ancestral to us in a way, said Dr Long. After the placoderms died out, another type of jawed vertebrate, the bony fish, evolved into tetrapods - the four-limbed animal group which includes mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. Last year, scientists reported the earliest instance of a live birth in another placoderm fossil from the Gogo formation of western Australia. paul.rincon-inter...@bbc.co.uk Story from BBC NEWS: http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/pr/fr/-/2/hi/science/nature/7909984.stm Published: 2009/02/26 04:38:05 GMT © BBC MMIX Print Sponsor --- Jusfiq Hadjar gelar Sutan Maradjo Lelo Allah yang disembah orang Islam tipikal dan yang digambarkan oleh al-Mushaf itu dungu, buas, kejam, keji, ganas, zalim lagi biadab hanyalah Allah fiktif.
