Re: [Zappa-List] Vine Efficiency (WAS 1970-11-14 early and late LIST)

2005-06-29 Thread mr. and mrs. skull

Well, I won't proceed with unless a majority
approve. I don't feel I have any right to make decisions for the others
involved. But at worst we only have two places to look:
one, in the US and the second in EU\UK. I think we
should consider that some will wind up paying unnecessarily inflated shipping
fees for one way or other "over the pond".

MR. SKULL

Whatever you guys wish, I suppose. But part of the vine system we employ
makes searching for them easier and I feel that splitting them will make that
  end more confusing.
  Whatever...

I think at this point all we can do is learn
how to things differently in the future.

As a possible model for future vines of this
sort: When I receive the vine, I could burn two (2) sets, and then send one
to the next EU\UK recipient and one to the next US recipient. And we just
send them in the order listed disregarding those not in the country the vine
is traveling in.
i.e. those in the US disregard all EU\UK
recipients, and those in the latter afore mentioned disregard all US
recipients.

MR. SKULL

  Well...
I'm not one to complicate things and, tho I can see some of the
efficiencies mentioned in this thread regarding vines crossing the pond, I
think having two branches for every vine will end up complicating the
system. My opinion is that a single vine is easier to track, and easier to
search. I guess I'd rather see single vines where an occasional shuffling
of names occurs (with the agreement of the participants, of course).
As this vine is already enroute to Europe, it does make a bit of
sense to have it make the rounds a bit there. The vinage as posted lately
  is:

  Chris US << Bart << mr. skull << Richard-UK
  << Milhouse-US << white rabbitt-US << Nick Ullmann-UK
  << Scott Burnett - US << Joseph-US [EMAIL PROTECTED] <<
  Guy-US  [EMAIL PROTECTED]
  <<

With the vine on it's way to Bart, and if all are amenable, it could
  be amended to:

  Bart << mr. skull << Richard-UK << Nick Ullmann-UK
  << Milhouse-US << white rabbitt-US << Scott Burnett - US
  << Joseph-US [EMAIL PROTECTED] << Guy-US  [EMAIL PROTECTED] <<

This is merely a suggestion; it's really something the vine
participants need to decide for themselves...
  My 2 cents,

I don't see any sense in a vine going from the US,
to Europe, then back to the US, then to the UK. Makes no sense at
all

I don't see the problem with doing a ping pong
thing. But another but:if Chris has already sent it to me then I'll
pass it to my Brit friends omitting US,then Chris or Jim is supposed to
send the new set to Mr.Skull as a US starter. If Chris has not sent it yet
to me, he can send it to his US friends, but then will Jim or Chris sent
another set to me?In case if Euroland is going to wait till US will be all
done first, what if the list grows with more US wanters? It all depends if
Jim or Chris are going to clone another euro-vine.Or there's not a topic
and let's do it as it
  sits.CheersBartUżytkownik abxer3p <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

It seems that the vine is moving. Today I
received a message from Gabriel (BR) that says he just sent the cds to me

confident Gabriel will confirm the shipment to the group and update the list.

Our drive is a dvd\cdrom drive. So the wife says.
I'll have to check with her on this.

Confusion...

Um.. you said CD-rom? Did you mean
DVD-ROM? Is it a VCD? Ether way DVDShrink will only work with a DVD-ROM drive.

  Jim,

Yes, my cdrom drive *is* in fact reading other
discs and burning to them without a problem.

Thanks for the assist, I'll try it.

  Mr. Skull

If you
haven't tried DVDShrink it might work. If it won't read them I'd suspect
hardware problems. DVDShrink is a free download but a very nice DVD riper.
It creates a VIDEO_TS folder on the hard drive that Nero can defiantly burn.
Is your drive reading other DVDs ok?

2005-05-26 Thread mr. and mrs. skull

It
creates a VIDEO_TS folder on the hard drive that Nero can defiantly burn. Is
your drive reading other DVDs ok?

2005-05-26 Thread mr. and mrs. skull

I'll have to see if Nero (one of several programs
we use) has free on-line updates for this.

Thanks,

Mr. Skull

if there are no marks or cracks on the play
side of the discs then maybe your have a pal v's ntsc issue. maybe you could
upgrade your software if that is the case since most/all current dvd burning
software will not have a problem.
cant think of anything else off hand.

Group,

I received the discs from Jack Simpson last
week. I ordinarily would have already copied and sent them on, but I have
been having problems getting the discs copied. Nothing
I do seems to work. My drive will not
acknowledge them at all. I've tried everything I can think of, but to no

give up and send them on now unless someone has any clever ideas.

Re: [Zappa-List] Re: OFF TOPIC

2004-10-30 Thread mr. and mrs. skull

Danny,

Have you seen the PKD documentary? It's fairly
redundant if you've read the biography "Divine Invasions" but the interviews
with those who knew him were worth seeing.

Seems to be the case that more often than not, it's
the artists who reflect back accurately what a given culture or society is
doing, and where it's at in its development.
Frank wrote about a secret underground base in
"Thingfish" and lo and behold later it was revealed that it wasn't just a
product of his imagination. Not to mention he saw compact discs and music
downloading twenty years before this arrived.

Darrell

Yep! I can relate to that. I recently read again (after about a 15
year absence!!), "The Simulacra" and I was quite astonished/knocked-back by
its insights/prescience. And, yes, "Radio Free Albemouth" is a great novel,
especialy as - IF I recall correctly - PKD 'assimilates' his experince of
being monitored/investigated by the 'dark forces' of the FBI/CIA. PKD, in the
lates 1960s, attended a few meetings of the Communist Party of the United
States of America, which was enjoying a mini-renaissance under the 'fire' of
people like Angela Davies (especally in California, PKD's base). He
eventually 'drifted' away, but was classified as a Communist Party
sympathiser/'fellow-traveller, and 'monitored' day and night' by YOU-KNOW-WHO.
At one stage, it was fairly clear that PKD's phone was being TAPPED by the
FBI/CIA, but almost everybody - understandably in some ways, given his
drugs-intake - dismissed him for being 'paranoid'. We now know, of
course, and it has been since 'officially' confessed, that his phone
WAS tapped by the FBI/CIA, and his apartment WAS broken
into, and burgled, by FBI/CIA shits looking for 'subversive/communist'
  material.

  Meanwhile, back in Florida ...

2004-10-30 Thread mr. and mrs. skull

Libertarian is the only way I've ever voted. But of
course i'm always hassled for "wasting my vote". Considering all of the
shenanigans in the last and now current "election" that seems pretty
meaningless.

Darrell

Are any of you guy's aware of
the Libertarian party? They've been working for years to try to get people
into the congress and even more local positions. The idea being that by the
time they might actually get a presidential candidate elected he will have
some support to get things done. They have of course been fighting a very
entrenched two party system the whole way with only minimal success.

  http://www.lp.org/
They are to the Republicans what
Nader is to the Democrats. They are saying their guy (Badnerik) will make the
difference in New Mexico giving the win to Kerry. I find most of their
positions easier to endorse than ether of the two big parties. To me they take
what's best from both and leave out what's wrong with both. Like Nader they
don't have a hope in hell in the presidential election of course.

Not to deprive SOFA of any of his accolades, but
sometimes Frank was just whacky for the sake of

writing lyrics
for the sake of amusing himself.

  Busted...
Yeah, Glen, that's me - for what it's worth.
FZ could get pretty cryptic in his lyrics - not as cryptic as some would
make him to be, but cryptic just the same. I try to use a common sense
approach when it comes to "getting" his meaning.
I'm glad you're enjoying my musings on the subject.
