I think most MAID is sold as a (misguided IMHO) replacement for
Tape, not as a Tier 1 kind of storage. YMMV.

It's simply a shell grokking issue, when you allow your (l)users to self
name your files then you will have spaces etc in the filename (breaks

What's the name of the 7th drive? Did you take all the drives from the

As a practical measure, you should probably not be duplicating levels of
striping or redundancy in both layers.
