A DMG file is exactly what I was looking for, but It looks like the time stamps on the files at http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.7/ are from July, 2010 and therefore would not have the latest version of Python (2.7.1).
So is the best thing to do, just keep an eye on http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.7/ until there is a more recent time stamp?
