You could also try Homebrew for OSX: http://mxcl.github.com/homebrew/
I hadn't seen that before. Now that you've brought it up...
I see their tagline is "macports driving you to drink?"
So, what advantages does homebrew have over macports?

I just did a "brew update" and 2.7.1 is there.

Actually I don't really need 2.7.1 and, in fact, I have already been
using 2.7 for quite some time.
The only reason that I posted the question on the board was that I am
new to Python and the whole installation process.
When I saw that 2.7.1 had just been released yesterday I thought it
would be nice to install the latest version. When I was puzzled as to
the lack of a self-contained installer for the Mac, I posted the question.
But, you're right, I can certainly stick with 2.7

The link I sent is to 2.7. Do you really *need* 2.7.1? 2.7 and
2.7.1 have same features.

A DMG file is exactly what I was looking for, but It looks
like the time stamps on the files at
http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.7/ are from July, 2010 and
therefore would not have the latest version of Python (2.7.1).
So is the best thing to do, just keep an eye on
http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.7/ until there is a more
recent time stamp?

What is the best way of installing 2.7.1 on a Mac
running Snow Leopard?
There doesn't seem to be an installer, as there is for
Windows.
I downloaded
* Gzipped source tar ball (2.7.1)
<http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.7.1/Python-2.7.1.tgz>
(sig)
<http://www.python.org/download/releases/2.7.1/Python-2.7.1.tgz.asc>
but it is not clear to me what to do with it.
The zip file decompresses into a folder named
Python-2.7.1, which is on my desktop, which contains
the following.

There is a very lengthy README file, but I am not sure
how much of it applies, or whether installation should
really be that complicated.
If anyone has already installed 2.7.1 on your Mac
running Snow Leopard, what did you do?
I also posted this on our UW Python class mailing
list, but thought I would post it here too.
