Sorry, I agree with Doc here: I think the stock RH installation is
broken because it fails to install a working `sendmail' (I think a
working `sendmail' is one that can send *and* receive email.)

Why can't `anaconda' have a screen devoted to making the right choices
for a working `sendmail'? Any security warnings could be taken care
here.

BTW, does anyone know what OpenBSD does? NetBSD? FreeBSD? Other Linux
distros? Solaris? HP-UX? Other Unices?

Are you implying that there is no way to configure `sendmail' so that
there isn't an open mail relay? Or are you suggesting that the RH folks
don't know enough about `sendmail' to configure it properly? If you
answered "no" to both questions, I don't understand where the problem is
since, by your own admission, `sendmail' can be configured not to be an
open mail relay, and RH knows how to do it.

Your argument is merely that it's easy to change; you've presented no
evidence that it's "good".

VH> And you need to configure it anyway to make it work, not?

No. Just comment out the DAEMON_OPTIONS line in /etc/mail/sendmail.mc
and follow the directions for recompiling /etc/sendmail.cf, both of
which could be done by `anaconda'.
