IMO, you have one course of action if the VM sucks for you: try a new
VM. Try either the 2.4.10-ac11 which includes the latest improvements on
the original 2.4 VM; or go whole hog and try Linus's new VM which first
appeared in 2.4.11. It is up to 2.4.12 now (but make sure you get the
really latest one with Tim Waugh's parport fix). Being cautious of the
bleeding edge is understandable, but it appears you have little choice.
